Plasticity of Metal-Organic Framework Crystals: Thermally Activated Collapse of Nanopores

Unrecoverable deformation or plasticity can be generated in crystalline metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) by compressive loading with different rates in various applications. Herein, plastic behaviors of MOF HKUST-1 crystals are investigated by a series of in situ strain-rate-dependent compression tests. The yield strength is found to significantly increase with increasing strain rate, following a logarithmic dependence. Our reactive molecular dynamics simulations illustrate that the yielding of crystalline HKUST-1 is induced by the irreversible collapse of its nanopores, which can be accelerated by thermal activation at finite temperatures. Based on this mechanism together with the reaction rate theory, we derive an analytical expression relating the yield strength of MOFs and strain rate, which fits experimental findings well. Overall, this work can expand our current understanding of MOF plasticity, which is of importance for the mechanical shaping and various applications of MOF crystals.

Hydrostatic pressure-induced reversible phase transformation in iron oxide nanoparticles

We report hydrostatic pressure-induced reversible phase transformation in maghemite γ-Fe2O3 nanoparticles (cubic → tetragonal → cubic) using an in situ diamond anvil cell (DAC) technique. Thermal arc plasma-synthesized nanoparticles, particularly in a He gas medium, exhibit the reversible phase transformation under pressure ranging from 0 to 2.58 GPa. Rietveld refinement reflects that cubic to tetragonal maghemite phase transformation coexists with a cubic metallic Fe phase at 0.55 GPa pressure. The generation of two new superlattice reflections at 6.93° and 8.11°, respectively, reflects the phase transformation. The presence of a core-shell-type nanostructure observed from transmission electron microscopy micrographs is found to exhibit a spin glass shell-type behavior. This triggers pressure-induced fluctuating magnetization and interparticle interaction-induced surface anisotropy and spin disorder with broken bonds, translational symmetry, and incomplete coordination. This leads to overcoming the nucleation barrier at the surface, subsequently denser nucleation sites and increased nucleation probability. This further leads to an atomic rearrangement and tetragonality in the maghemite phase. Furthermore, with increasing pressure, the reversible structural change, i.e. from the tetragonal to cubic maghemite phase, has been explained in the light of the "internal stress model". The grains are again forced back to the cubic phase via generation of uniform compression along the c-axis and tension along the a and b axes. The spin glass behavior of the core-shell nanostructure along with the "internal stress model" explain the whole reversible phase transformation phenomenon in the γ-Fe2O3 phase.

Compressibility Studies of Copper Selenides Obtained by Cation Exchange Reaction Revealing the New CsCl Phase

In this study, we conducted a high-pressure investigation of Cu2-xSe nanostructures with pyramid- and plate-like morphologies, created through cation exchange from zinc-blende CdSe nanocrystals and wurtzite CdSe nanoplatelets respectively. Using a diamond anvil cell setup at the APS synchrotron, we observed the phase transitions in the Cu2-xSe nanostructures up to 40 GPa, identifying a novel CsCl-type lattice with Pm3̅m symmetry above 4 GPa. This CsCl-type structure, previously unreported in copper selenides, was partially retained after decompression. Our results indicate that the initial crystalline structure of CdSe does not affect the stability of Cu2-xSe nanostructures formed via cation exchange. Both morphologies of Cu2-xSe sintered under compression, potentially contributing to the stabilization of the high-pressure phase through interfacial defects. These findings are significant for discovering new phases with potential applications in future technologies.

Kinetically Controlled Direct Synthesis of B2- and A1-Structured Cu-Pd Nanoparticles

Atomic arrangement in Cu-Pd alloy nanoparticles (NPs) has been reported to influence the catalytic activity, but they have yet to be studied in detail. Unlike previous studies, where the B2 structure Cu-Pd NPs are obtained by heat treating the A1 structure, this study reports the one-pot direct syntheses of A1- and B2-structured Cu-Pd NPs using an alcohol reduction method. The alcohol reduction technique facilitates the kinetic control of the reduction reaction by selecting the appropriate alcohol type and complexing agent to delay the reduction of easily reducible metallic elements to realize control over the reduction kinetics for coreduction. Different formation mechanisms for A1- and B2-structured CuPd NPs were confirmed by in situ ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) measurements and morphological and structural analyses of samples withdrawn during the reaction. Finally, the direct formation of single-phase B2-structured Cu-Pd NPs with an average diameter of 18.6 ± 7.6 nm was realized using tri-n-octyl phosphine as a complexing agent. The noticeable crystal structural dependence of the electrocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction properties of A1- and B2-structured CuPd NPs was demonstrated.

Theoretical and Experimental Advances in High-Pressure Behaviors of Nanoparticles

Using compressive mechanical forces, such as pressure, to induce crystallographic phase transitions and mesostructural changes while modulating material properties in nanoparticles (NPs) is a unique way to discover new phase behaviors, create novel nanostructures, and study emerging properties that are difficult to achieve under conventional conditions. In recent decades, NPs of a plethora of chemical compositions, sizes, shapes, surface ligands, and self-assembled mesostructures have been studied under pressure by in-situ scattering and/or spectroscopy techniques. As a result, the fundamental knowledge of pressure-structure-property relationships has been significantly improved, leading to a better understanding of the design guidelines for nanomaterial synthesis. In the present review, we discuss experimental progress in NP high-pressure research conducted primarily over roughly the past four years on semiconductor NPs, metal and metal oxide NPs, and perovskite NPs. We focus on the pressure-induced behaviors of NPs at both the atomic- and mesoscales, inorganic NP property changes upon compression, and the structural and property transitions of perovskite NPs under pressure. We further discuss in depth progress on molecular modeling, including simulations of ligand behavior, phase-change chalcogenides, layered transition metal dichalcogenides, boron nitride, and inorganic and hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites NPs. These models now provide both mechanistic explanations of experimental observations and predictive guidelines for future experimental design. We conclude with a summary and our insights on future directions for exploration of nanomaterial phase transition, coupling, growth, and nanoelectronic and photonic properties.

Direct Observation of Off-Stoichiometry-Induced Phase Transformation of 2D CdSe Quantum Nanosheets

Crystal structures determine material properties, suggesting that crystal phase transformations have the potential for application in a variety of systems and devices. Phase transitions are more likely to occur in smaller crystals; however, in quantum-sized semiconductor nanocrystals, the microscopic mechanisms by which phase transitions occur are not well understood. Herein, the phase transformation of 2D CdSe quantum nanosheets caused by off-stoichiometry is revealed, and the progress of the transformation is directly observed by in situ transmission electron microscopy. The initial hexagonal wurtzite-CdSe nanosheets with atomically uniform thickness are transformed into cubic zinc blende-CdSe nanosheets. A combined experimental and theoretical study reveals that electron-beam irradiation can change the stoichiometry of the nanosheets, thereby triggering phase transformation. The loss of Se atoms induces the reconstruction of surface atoms, driving the transformation from wurtzite-CdSe(11 2 ¯ $\bar{2}$ 0) to zinc blende-CdSe(001) 2D nanocrystals. Furthermore, during the phase transformation, unconventional dynamic phenomena occur, including domain separation. This study contributes to the fundamental understanding of the phase transformations in 2D quantum-sized semiconductor nanocrystals.

Nanocrystals with metastable high-pressure phases under ambient conditions

The ambient metastability of the rock-salt phase in well-defined model systems comprising nanospheres or nanorods of cadmium selenide, cadmium sulfide, or both was investigated as a function of composition, initial crystal phase, particle structure, shape, surface functionalization, and ordering level of their assemblies. Our experiments show that these nanocrystal systems exhibit ligand-tailorable reversibility in the rock salt-to-zinc blende solid-phase transformation. Interparticle sintering was used to engineer kinetic barriers in the phase transformation to produce ambient-pressure metastable rock-salt structures in a controllable manner. Interconnected nanocrystal networks were identified as an essential structure that hosted metastable high-energy phases at ambient conditions. These findings suggest general rules for transformation-barrier engineering that are useful in the rational design of next-generation materials.

Vanishing Confinement Regime in Terahertz HgTe Nanocrystals Studied under Extreme Conditions of Temperature and Pressure

While HgTe nanocrystals (NCs) in the mid-infrared region have reached a high level of maturity, their far-infrared counterparts remain far less studied, raising the need for an in-depth investigation of the material before efficient device integration can be considered. Here, we explore the effect of temperature and pressure on the structural, spectroscopic, and transport properties of HgTe NCs displaying an intraband absorption at 10 THz. The temperature leads to a very weak modulation of the spectrum as opposed to what was observed for strongly confined HgTe NCs. HgTe NC films present ambipolar conduction with a clear prevalence of electron conduction as confirmed by transistor and thermoelectric measurements. Under the application of pressure, the material undergoes phase transitions from the zinc blende to cinnabar phase and later to the rock salt phase which we reveal using joint X-ray diffraction and infrared spectroscopy measurements. We discuss how the pressure existence domain of each phase is affected by the particle size.

Atomic-Scale Tracking of Dynamic Nucleation and Growth of an Interfacial Lead Nanodroplet

Revealing the evolutional pathway of the nucleation and crystallization of nanostructures at the atomic scale is crucial for understanding the complex growth mechanisms at the early stage of new substances and spices. Real-time discrimination of the atomic mechanism of a nanodroplet transition is still a formidable challenge. Here, taking advantage of the high temporal and spatial resolution of transmission electron microscopy, the detailed growth pathway of Pb nanodroplets at the early stage of nucleation was directly observed by employing electron beams to induce the nucleation, growth, and fusion process of Pb nanodroplets based on PbTiO3 nanowires. Before the nucleation of Pb nanoparticles, the atoms began to precipitate when they were irradiated by electrons, forming a local crystal structure, and then rapidly and completely crystallized. Small nanodroplets maintain high activity and high density and gradually grow and merge into stable crystals. The whole process was recorded and imaged by HRTEM in real time. The growth of Pb nanodroplets advanced through the classical path and instantaneous droplet coalescence. These results provide an atomic-scale insight on the dynamic process of solid/solid interface, which has implications in thin-film growth and advanced nanomanufacturing.

Pressure-Induced Phase Transition and Compression Properties of HfO2 Nanocrystals

Nanoparticles exhibit unique properties due to their surface effects and small size, and their behavior at high pressures has attracted widespread attention in recent years. Herein, a series of in situ high-pressure X-ray diffraction measurements with a synchrotron radiation source and Raman scattering have been performed on HfO₂ nanocrystals (NC-HfO₂) with different grain sizes using a symmetric diamond anvil cell at ambient temperature. The experimental data reveal that the structural stability, phase transition behavior, and equation of state for HfO₂ have an interesting size effect under high pressure. NC-HfO₂ quenched to normal pressure is characterized by transmission electron microscopy to determine the changing behavior of grain size during phase transition. We found that the rotation of the nanocrystalline HfO₂ grains causes a large strain, resulting in the retention of part of an orthorhombic I (OI) phase in the sample quenched to atmospheric pressure. Furthermore, the physical mechanism of the phase transition of NC-HfO₂ under high pressure can be well explained by the first-principles calculations. The calculations demonstrate that NC-HfO₂ has a strong surface effect, that is, the surface energy and surface stress can stabilize the structures. These studies may offer new insights into the understanding of the physical behavior of nanocrystal materials under high pressure and provide practical guidance for their realization in industrial applications.

Selective suppression of {112} anatase facets by fluorination for enhanced TiO2 particle size and phase stability at elevated temperatures

Generally, anatase is the most desirable TiO₂ polymorphic phase for photovoltaic and photocatalytic applications due to its higher photoconductivity and lower recombination rates compared to the rutile phase. However, in applications where temperatures above 500 °C are required, growing pure anatase phase nanoparticles is still a challenge, as above this temperature TiO₂ crystallite sizes are larger than 35 nm which thermodynamically favors the growth of rutile crystallites. In this work, we show strong evidence, for the first time, that achieving a specific fraction (50%) of the {112} facets on the TiO₂ surface is the key limiting step for anatase-to-rutile phase transition, rather than the crystallite size. By using a fluorinated ionic liquid (IL) we have obtained pure anatase phase crystallites at temperatures up to 800 °C, even after the crystallites have grown beyond their thermodynamic size limit of ca. 35 nm. While fluorination by the IL did not affect {001} growth, it stabilized the pure anatase TiO₂ by suppressing the formation of {112} facets on anatase particles. By suppressing the {112} facets, using specific concentrations of fluorinated ionic liquid in the TiO₂ synthesis, we controlled the anatase-to-rutile phase transition over a wide range of temperatures. This information shall help synthetic researchers to determine the appropriate material conditions for specific applications.

Revealing thermally-activated nucleation pathways of diffusionless solid-to-solid transition

Solid-to-solid transitions usually occur via athermal nucleation pathways on pre-existing defects due to immense strain energy. However, the extent to which athermal nucleation persists under low strain energy comparable to the interface energy, and whether thermally-activated nucleation is still possible are mostly unknown. To address these questions, the microscopic observation of the transformation dynamics is a prerequisite. Using a charged colloidal system that allows the triggering of an fcc-to-bcc transition while enabling in-situ single-particle-level observation, we experimentally find both athermal and thermally-activated pathways controlled by the softness of the parent crystal. In particular, we reveal three new transition pathways: ingrain homogeneous nucleation driven by spontaneous dislocation generation, heterogeneous nucleation assisted by premelting grain boundaries, and wall-assisted growth. Our findings reveal the physical principles behind the system-dependent pathway selection and shed light on the control of solid-to-solid transitions through the parent phase's softness and defect landscape.

Peering into the Formation of Template-Free Hierarchical Flowerlike Nanostructures of SrTiO3

The development of efficient advanced functional materials is highly dependent on properties such as morphology, crystallinity, and surface functionality. In this work, hierarchical flowerlike nanostructures of SrTiO3 have been synthesized by a simple template-free solvothermal method involving poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP). Molecular dynamics simulations supported by structural characterization have shown that PVP preferentially adsorbs on {110} facets, thereby promoting the {100} facet growth. This interaction results in the formation of hierarchical flowerlike nanostructures with assembled nanosheets. The petal morphology is strongly dependent on the presence of PVP, and the piling up of nanosheets, leading to nanocubes, is observed when PVP is removed at high temperatures. This work contributes to a better understanding of how to control the morphological properties of SrTiO3, which is fundamental to the synthesis of perovskite-type materials with tailored properties.

Shape Dependence of Pressure-Induced Phase Transition in CdS Semiconductor Nanocrystals

Understanding structural stability and phase transformation of nanoparticles under high pressure is of great scientific interest, as it is one of the crucial factors for design, synthesis, and application of materials. Even though high-pressure research on nanomaterials has been widely conducted, their shape-dependent phase transition behavior still remains unclear. Examples of phase transitions of CdS nanoparticles are very limited, despite the fact that it is one of the most studied wide band gap semiconductors. Here we have employed in situ synchrotron wide-angle X-ray scattering and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) to investigate the high-pressure behaviors of CdS nanoparticles as a function of particle shapes. We observed that CdS nanoparticles transform from wurtzite to rocksalt phase at elevated pressure in comparison to their bulk counterpart. Phase transitions also vary with particle shape: rod-shaped particles show a partially reversible phase transition and the onset of the structural phase transition pressure decreases with decreasing surface-to-volume ratios, while spherical particles undergo irreversible phase transition with relatively low phase transition pressure. Additionally, TEM images of spherical particles exhibited sintering-induced morphology change after high-pressure compression. Calculations of the bulk modulus reveal that spheres are more compressible than rods in the wurtzite phase. These results indicate that the shape of the particle plays an important role in determining their high-pressure properties. Our study provides important insights into understanding the phase-structure-property relationship, guiding future design and synthesis of nanoparticles for promising applications.

Pressure Induced Nanoparticle Phase Behavior, Property, and Applications

Nanoparticle (NP) high pressure behavior has been extensively studied over the years. In this review, we summarize recent progress on the studies of pressure induced NP phase behavior, property, and applications. This review starts with a brief overview of high pressure characterization techniques, coupled with synchrotron X-ray scattering, Raman, fluorescence, and absorption. Then, we survey the pressure induced phase transition of NP atomic crystal structure including size dependent phase transition, amorphization, and threshold pressures using several typical NP material systems as examples. Next, we discuss the pressure induced phase transition of NP mesoscale structures including topics on pressure induced interparticle separation distance, NP coupling, and NP coalescence. Pressure induced new properties and applications in different NP systems are highlighted. Finally, outlooks with future directions are discussed.

Thermodynamically driven assemblies and liquid-liquid phase separations in biology

The sustenance of life depends on the high degree of organization that prevails through different levels of living organisms, from subcellular structures such as biomolecular complexes and organelles to tissues and organs. The physical origin of such organization is not fully understood, and even though it is clear that cells and organisms cannot maintain their integrity without consuming energy, there is growing evidence that individual assembly processes can be thermodynamically driven and occur spontaneously due to changes in thermodynamic variables such as intermolecular interactions and concentration. Understanding the phase separation in vivo requires a multidisciplinary approach, integrating the theory and physics of phase separation with experimental and computational techniques. This paper aims at providing a brief overview of the physics of phase separation and its biological implications, with a particular focus on the assembly of membraneless organelles. We discuss the underlying physical principles of phase separation from its thermodynamics to its kinetics. We also overview the wide range of methods utilized for experimental verification and characterization of phase separation of membraneless organelles, as well as the utility of molecular simulations rooted in thermodynamics and statistical physics in understanding the governing principles of thermodynamically driven biological self-assembly processes.

A Metastable Crystalline Phase in Two-Dimensional Metallic Oxide Nanoplates

A simple method was adopted in which ultrathin cerium oxide nanoplates (<1.4 nm) were synthesized to increase the surface atomic content, allowing transformation from a face-centered cubic (fcc) phase to a body-centered tetragonal (bct) phase. Three types of cerium oxide nanoparticles of different thicknesses (1.2 nm ultrathin nanoplates, 2.2 nm nanoplates, and 5.4 nm nanocubes) were examined using transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The metastable bct phase was observed only in ultrathin nanoplates. Thermodynamic energy analysis confirmed that the surface energy of the ultrathin nanoplates is the cause of the remarkable stabilization of the metastable bct phase. The mechanism of surface energy regulation can be expanded to other metallic oxides, thus providing a new means for manipulating and stabilizing novel materials under ambient conditions that otherwise would not be recovered.

Shape dependence of thermodynamics of adsorption on nanoparticles: a theoretical and experimental study

Nanomaterials have excellent adsorption performance, which mainly depends on the adsorption thermodynamics that is related to the shape of the nanoparticles that make up the nanomaterial, but the effects of shape on the thermodynamics of adsorption are not fully clear. In this paper, theoretically, the general formulae of adsorption thermodynamic properties for nanoparticles with different shapes and different sizes were derived, and the influencing regularities and mechanisms on adsorption thermodynamic properties were discussed. Experimentally, the influences of the shape and size of nano-CeO2 on the thermodynamics of adsorption were studied in aqueous solution. The experiment results showed that the shape has significant influences on the thermodynamics of adsorption, and the smaller the particle size, the more significant the effects of shape on the thermodynamics. For the adsorption of nano-CeO2 with different shapes and the same equivalent particle size, compared with the sphere, the equilibrium constant of adsorption for the octahedron is larger, while the molar Gibbs free energy of adsorption , the molar adsorption enthalpy of adsorption and the molar adsorption entropy of adsorption are smaller. For the adsorption of nano-CeO2 with the same shape, with the decreasing particle size, increases, while , and decrease; and , , and are each linearly related to the reciprocal of particle size. The experimental results are consistent with the theoretical relations. The theories can quantitatively describe the adsorption behavior on nanoparticles, explain the regularities and mechanisms of influence of shape, and provide guidance for the research and application of nanoadsorption.

Thermally-induced reversible structural isomerization in colloidal semiconductor CdS magic-size clusters

Structural isomerism of colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals has been largely unexplored. Here, we report one pair of structural isomers identified for colloidal nanocrystals which exhibit thermally-induced reversible transformations behaving like molecular isomerization. The two isomers are CdS magic-size clusters with sharp absorption peaks at 311 and 322 nm. They have identical cluster masses, but slightly different structures. Furthermore, their interconversions follow first-order unimolecular reaction kinetics. We anticipate that such isomeric kinetics are applicable to a variety of small-size functional nanomaterials, and that the methodology developed for our kinetic study will be helpful to investigate and exploit solid–solid transformations in other semiconductor nanocrystals. The findings on structural isomerism should stimulate attention toward advanced design and synthesis of functional nanomaterials enabled by structural transformations.

Few structural isomers of colloids, with identical masses but different structures, have been identified. Here, the authors observe an interesting example of structural isomerism in a pair of semiconductor magic-size clusters, which reversibly transform between one another with first-order unimolecular reaction kinetics.

Solution Synthesis of Nonequilibrium Zincblende MnS Nanowires

Uniform four-coordinate nonequilibrium MnS nanowires mainly in zincblende structure, other than the stable rock-salt phase, are reported for the first time. The MnS nanowires are grown via a solution-solid-solid model from the reaction of a Mn(II) source with dibenzyl disulfide in oleylamine at 180-200 °C catalyzed by Ag₂S nanocrystals in a body-centered cubic (bcc) fast-ionic phase transformed from their low-temperature monoclinic form. Investigations show that most of the zincblende MnS nanowires are grown along the ⟨112⟩ zone axis but a small proportion grow along the ⟨111⟩_ZB/⟨0001⟩_Wur axis with zincblende/defect-section and/or wurtzite/defect-section superlattices connected with the stems along the ⟨112⟩ direction. The nanowires have a tendency to grow straight at relatively low reaction temperature for short reaction times but twist at high temperature for long reaction times. Meanwhile, relatively high temperatures and long times favor the transition of the MnS nanowires in the zincblende phase to the corresponding thermodynamic ones in rock-salt form. Interestingly, even small increases in reaction pressure (1-2 atm) sensitively influence the growth of the MnS nanowires from zincblende to wurtzite form in the present catalytic system although low-pressure changes commonly do not have an obvious effect on condensed matter. In addition, the optical and magnetic properties of the zincblende MnS nanowires were studied, and they are varied largely from the bulk.

Diffusive and martensitic nucleation kinetics in solid-solid transitions of colloidal crystals

Solid–solid transitions between crystals follow diffusive nucleation, or various diffusionless transitions, but these kinetics are difficult to predict and observe. Here we observed the rich kinetics of transitions from square lattices to triangular lattices in tunable colloidal thin films with single-particle dynamics by video microscopy. Applying a small pressure gradient in defect-free regions or near dislocations markedly transform the diffusive nucleation with an intermediate-stage liquid into a martensitic generation and oscillation of dislocation pairs followed by a diffusive nucleus growth. This transformation is neither purely diffusive nor purely martensitic as conventionally assumed but a combination thereof, and thus presents new challenges to both theory and the empirical criterion of martensitic transformations. We studied how pressure, density, grain boundary, triple junction and interface coherency affect the nucleus growth, shape and kinetic pathways. These novel microscopic kinetics cast new light on control solid–solid transitions and microstructural evolutions in polycrystals.

Solid-solid transitions between different crystalline structures have broad implications in earth science, steel and ceramic materials. Peng et al. show a transformation pathway that starts off as being martensitic then switches to diffusive at the single particle level in a colloidal system under pressure.

Shape-driven solid-solid transitions in colloids

Solid-solid phase transitions are the most ubiquitous in nature, and many technologies rely on them. However, studying them in detail is difficult because of the extreme conditions (high pressure/temperature) under which many such transitions occur and the high-resolution equipment needed to capture the intermediate states of the transformations. These difficulties mean that basic questions remain unanswered, such as whether so-called diffusionless solid-solid transitions, which have only local particle rearrangement, require thermal activation. Here, we introduce a family of minimal model systems that exhibits solid-solid phase transitions that are driven by changes in the shape of colloidal particles. By using particle shape as the control variable, we entropically reshape the coordination polyhedra of the particles in the system, a change that occurs indirectly in atomic solid-solid phase transitions via changes in temperature, pressure, or density. We carry out a detailed investigation of the thermodynamics of a series of isochoric, diffusionless solid-solid phase transitions within a single shape family and find both transitions that require thermal activation or are "discontinuous" and transitions that occur without thermal activation or are "continuous." In the discontinuous case, we find that sufficiently large shape changes can drive reconfiguration on timescales comparable with those for self-assembly and without an intermediate fluid phase, and in the continuous case, solid-solid reconfiguration happens on shorter timescales than self-assembly, providing guidance for developing means of generating reconfigurable colloidal materials.

Intermetallic Nanocrystals: Syntheses and Catalytic Applications

At the forefront of nanochemistry, there exists a research endeavor centered around intermetallic nanocrystals, which are unique in terms of long-range atomic ordering, well-defined stoichiometry, and controlled crystal structure. In contrast to alloy nanocrystals with no elemental ordering, it is challenging to synthesize intermetallic nanocrystals with a tight control over their size and shape. Here, recent progress in the synthesis of intermetallic nanocrystals with controllable sizes and well-defined shapes is highlighted. A simple analysis and some insights key to the selection of experimental conditions for generating intermetallic nanocrystals are presented, followed by examples to highlight the viable use of intermetallic nanocrystals as electrocatalysts or catalysts for various reactions, with a focus on the enhanced performance relative to their alloy counterparts that lack elemental ordering. Within the conclusion, perspectives on future developments in the context of synthetic control, structure-property relationships, and applications are discussed.

In situ study on atomic mechanism of melting and freezing of single bismuth nanoparticles

Experimental study of the atomic mechanism in melting and freezing processes remains a formidable challenge. We report herein on a unique material system that allows for in situ growth of bismuth nanoparticles from the precursor compound SrBi₂Ta₂O₉ under an electron beam within a high-resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM). Simultaneously, the melting and freezing processes within the nanoparticles are triggered and imaged in real time by the HRTEM. The images show atomic-scale evidence for point defect induced melting, and a freezing mechanism mediated by crystallization of an intermediate ordered liquid. During the melting and freezing, the formation of nucleation precursors, nucleation and growth, and the relaxation of the system, are directly observed. Based on these observations, an interaction-relaxation model is developed towards understanding the microscopic mechanism of the phase transitions, highlighting the importance of cooperative multiscale processes.

Structural phase transition and photoluminescence properties of wurtzite CdS:Eu3+ nanoparticles under high pressure

Eu dopant increases the phase transition pressure from wurtzite to rocksalt structure compared with CdS nanoparticles. The PL peaks of the Eu³⁺ ions can used as pressure probe after the quenching of the PL peaks of rocksalt structure CdS.

Kinetic Growth of Ultralong Metastable Zincblende MnSe Nanowires Catalyzed by a Fast Ionic Conductor via a Solution-Solid-Solid Mechanism

The metastable semiconductor phase allows for the exploration of unusual properties and functionalities of abnormal structures, although it is often difficult to prevent thermodynamic transformations to lower energy structures from higher, unfavored energy states. Here, we show for the first time the preparation of high-quality ultralong metastable zincblende (ZB)-MnSe nanowires with a four-coordinate structure via solution-solid-solid (SSS) growth in a mild solution-phase synthetic environment (120-220 °C) in the presence of a trace amount of Ag(I). The metastable ZB-MnSe nanowires are stabilized kinetically due to the catalysis of early formed body-centered cubic (bcc) fast-ionic (superionic) Ag2Se nanocrystals from the Ag(I) source, and the ZB-MnSe nanowires grow epitaxially along the ⟨110⟩ axis rather than the ⟨111⟩ axis, as commonly observed for typical four-coordinate Grimm-Sommerfeld bonding solids. Our method provides a new route for the growth of metastable nanostructures.

Size-Dependent Disorder-Order Transformation in the Synthesis of Monodisperse Intermetallic PdCu Nanocatalysts

The high performance of Pd-based intermetallic nanocatalysts has the potential to replace Pt-containing catalysts for fuel-cell reactions. Conventionally, intermetallic particles are obtained through the annealing of nanoparticles of a random alloy distribution. However, this method inevitably leads to sintering of the nanoparticles and generates polydisperse samples. Here, monodisperse PdCu nanoparticles with the ordered B2 phase were synthesized by seed-mediated co-reduction using PdCu nanoparticle seeds with a random alloy distribution (A1 phase). A time-evolution study suggests that the particles must overcome a size-dependent activation barrier for the ordering process to occur. Characterization of the as-prepared PdCu B2 nanoparticles by electron microscopy techniques revealed surface segregation of Pd as a thin shell over the PdCu core. The ordered nanoparticles exhibit superior activity and durability for the oxygen reduction reaction in comparison with PdCu A1 nanoparticles. This seed-mediated co-reduction strategy produced monodisperse nanoparticles ideally suited for structure-activity studies. Moreover, the study of their growth mechanism provides insights into the size dependence of disorder-order transformations of bimetallic alloys at the nanoscale, which should enable the design of synthetic strategies toward other intermetallic systems.

Pressure Processing of Nanocube Assemblies Toward Harvesting of a Metastable PbS Phase

This materials-by-design approach combines nanocrystal assembly with pressure processing to drive the attachment and coalescence of PbS nanocubes along directed crystallographic dimensions to form a large 3D porous architecture. This quenchable and strained mesostructure holds the storage of large internal stress, which stabilizes the high-pressure PbS phase in atmospheric conditions. Nanocube fusion enhances the structural stability; the large surface area maintains the size-dependent properties.

Size Dependence of Metal-Insulator Transition in Stoichiometric Fe₃O4₄Nanocrystals

Magnetite (Fe3O4) is one of the most actively studied materials with a famous metal-insulator transition (MIT), so-called the Verwey transition at around 123 K. Despite the recent progress in synthesis and characterization of Fe3O4 nanocrystals (NCs), it is still an open question how the Verwey transition changes on a nanometer scale. We herein report the systematic studies on size dependence of the Verwey transition of stoichiometric Fe3O4 NCs. We have successfully synthesized stoichiometric and uniform-sized Fe3O4 NCs with sizes ranging from 5 to 100 nm. These stoichiometric Fe3O4 NCs show the Verwey transition when they are characterized by conductance, magnetization, cryo-XRD, and heat capacity measurements. The Verwey transition is weakly size-dependent and becomes suppressed in NCs smaller than 20 nm before disappearing completely for less than 6 nm, which is a clear, yet highly interesting indication of a size effect of this well-known phenomena. Our current work will shed new light on this ages-old problem of Verwey transition.

Two-step nucleation mechanism in solid-solid phase transitions

The microscopic kinetics of ubiquitous solid-solid phase transitions remain poorly understood. Here, by using single-particle-resolution video microscopy of colloidal films of diameter-tunable microspheres, we show that transitions between square and triangular lattices occur via a two-step diffusive nucleation pathway involving liquid nuclei. The nucleation pathway is favoured over the direct one-step nucleation because the energy of the solid/liquid interface is lower than that between solid phases. We also observed that nucleation precursors are particle-swapping loops rather than newly generated structural defects, and that coherent and incoherent facets of the evolving nuclei exhibit different energies and growth rates that can markedly alter the nucleation kinetics. Our findings suggest that an intermediate liquid should exist in the nucleation processes of solid-solid transitions of most metals and alloys, and provide guidance for better control of the kinetics of the transition and for future refinements of solid-solid transition theory.

Solid-solid phase transformations induced through cation exchange and strain in 2D heterostructured copper sulfide nanocrystals

We demonstrate dual interface formation in nanocrystals (NCs) through cation exchange, creating epitaxial heterostructures within spherical NCs. The thickness of the inner-disk layer can be tuned to form two-dimensional (2D), single atomic layers (<1 nm). During the cation exchange reaction from copper sulfide to zinc sulfide (ZnS), we observe a solid-solid phase transformation of the copper sulfide phase in heterostructured NCs. As the cation exchange reaction is initiated, Cu ions replaced by Zn ions at the interfaces are accommodated in intrinsic Cu vacancy sites present in the initial roxbyite (Cu1.81S) phase of copper sulfide, inducing a full phase transition to djurleite (Cu1.94S)/low chalcocite (Cu2S), a more thermodynamically stable phase than roxbyite. As the reaction proceeds and reduces the size of the copper sulfide layer, the epitaxial strain at the interfaces between copper sulfide and ZnS increases and is maximized for a copper sulfide disk ∼ 5 nm thick. To minimize this strain energy, a second phase transformation occurs back to the roxbyite phase, which shares a similar sulfur sublattice to wurtzite ZnS. The observation of a solid-solid phase transformation in our unique heterostructured NCs provides a new pathway to control desired phases and an insight into the influence of cation exchange on nanoscale phase transitions in heterostructured materials.

In situ atom scale visualization of domain wall dynamics in VO2 insulator-metal phase transition

A domain wall, as a device, can bring about a revolution in developing manipulation of semiconductor heterostructures devices at the atom scale. However, it is a challenge for these new devices to control domain wall motion through insulator-metal transition of correlated-electron materials. To fully understand and harness this motion, it requires visualization of domain wall dynamics in real space. Here, domain wall dynamics in VO₂ insulator-metal phase transition was observed directly by in situ TEM at atom scale. Experimental results depict atom scale evolution of domain morphologies and domain wall exact positions in (202) and (040) planes referring to rutile structure at 50°C. In addition, microscopic mechanism of domain wall dynamics and accurate lattice basis vector relationship of two domains were investigated with the assistance of X-ray diffraction, ab initio calculations and image simulations. This work offers a route to atom scale tunable heterostructure device application.

Real-time visualization of nanocrystal solid-solid transformation pathways

Measurement and understanding of the microscopic pathways materials follow as they transform is crucial for the design and synthesis of new metastable phases of matter. Here we employ femtosecond single-shot X-ray diffraction techniques to measure the pathways underlying solid-solid phase transitions in cadmium sulfide nanorods, a model system for a general class of martensitic transformations. Using picosecond rise-time laser-generated shocks to trigger the transformation, we directly observe the transition state dynamics associated with the wurtzite-to-rocksalt structural phase transformation in cadmium sulfide with atomic-scale resolution. A stress-dependent transition path is observed. At high peak stresses, the majority of the sample is converted directly into the rocksalt phase with no evidence of an intermediate prior to rocksalt formation. At lower peak stresses, a transient five-coordinated intermediate structure is observed consistent with previous first principles modeling.

Ice nucleation at the nanoscale probes no man's land of water

At a given thermodynamic condition, nucleation events occur at a frequency that scales with the volume of the system. Therefore at the nanoscale, one may expect to obtain supercooled liquids below the bulk homogeneous nucleation temperature. Here we report direct computational evidence that in supercooled water nano-droplets ice nucleation rates are strongly size dependent and at the nanoscale they are several orders of magnitude smaller than in bulk water. Using a thermodynamic model based on classical nucleation theory, we show that the Laplace pressure is partially responsible for the suppression of ice crystallization. Our simulations show that the nucleation rates found for droplets are similar to those of liquid water subject to a pressure of the order of the Laplace pressure within droplets. Our findings aid the interpretation of molecular beam experiments and support the hypothesis of surface crystallization of ice in microscopic water droplets in clouds.
