Electron Spectroscopy of Aqueous Solution Interfaces Reveals Surface Enhancement of Halides

Perspective on Theoretical and Experimental Advances in Atmospheric Photochemistry

Research that explores the chemistry of Earth's atmosphere is central to the current understanding of global challenges such as climate change, stratospheric ozone depletion, and poor air quality in urban areas. This research is a synergistic combination of three established domains: earth observation, for example, using satellites, and in situ field measurements; computer modeling of the atmosphere and its chemistry; and laboratory measurements of the properties and reactivity of gas-phase molecules and aerosol particles. The complexity of the interconnected chemical and photochemical reactions which determine the composition of the atmosphere challenges the capacity of laboratory studies to provide the spectroscopic, photochemical, and kinetic data required for computer models. Here, we consider whether predictions from computational chemistry using modern electronic structure theory and nonadiabatic dynamics simulations are becoming sufficiently accurate to supplement quantitative laboratory data for wavelength-dependent absorption cross-sections, photochemical quantum yields, and reaction rate coefficients. Drawing on presentations and discussions from the CECAM workshop on Theoretical and Experimental Advances in Atmospheric Photochemistry held in March 2024, we describe key concepts in the theory of photochemistry, survey the state-of-the-art in computational photochemistry methods, and compare their capabilities with modern experimental laboratory techniques. From such considerations, we offer a perspective on the scope of computational (photo)chemistry methods based on rigorous electronic structure theory to become a fourth core domain of research in atmospheric chemistry.

Liquid-jet photoemission spectroscopy as a structural tool: site-specific acid-base chemistry of vitamin C

Liquid-jet photoemission spectroscopy (LJ-PES) directly probes the electronic structure of solutes and solvents. It also emerges as a novel tool to explore chemical structure in aqueous solutions, yet the scope of the approach has to be examined. Here, we present a pH-dependent liquid-jet photoelectron spectroscopic investigation of ascorbic acid (vitamin C). We combine core-level photoelectron spectroscopy and ab initio calculations, allowing us to site-specifically explore the acid-base chemistry of the biomolecule. For the first time, we demonstrate the capability of the method to simultaneously assign two deprotonation sites within the molecule. We show that a large change in chemical shift appears even for atoms distant several bonds from the chemically modified group. Furthermore, we present a highly efficient and accurate computational protocol based on a single structure using the maximum-overlap method for modeling core-level photoelectron spectra in aqueous environments. This work poses a broader question: to what extent can LJ-PES complement established structural techniques such as nuclear magnetic resonance? Answering this question is highly relevant in view of the large number of incorrect molecular structures published.

Atmospheric Intermediates at the Air-Water Interface

The air-water interface (AWI) is a ubiquitous reaction field different from the bulk phase where unexpected reactions and physical processes often occur. The AWI is a region where air contacts cloud droplets, aerosol particles, the ocean surface, and biological surfaces such as fluids that line human epithelia. In Earth's atmosphere, short-lived intermediates are expected to be generated at the AWI during multiphase reactions. Recent experimental developments have enabled the direct detection of atmospherically relevant, short-lived intermediates at the AWI. For example, spray ionization mass spectrometric analysis of water microjets exposed to a gaseous mixture of ozone and water vapor combined with a 266 nm laser flash photolysis system (LFP-SIMS) has been used to directly probe organic peroxyl radicals (RO2·) produced by interfacial hydroxyl radicals (OH·) + organic compound reactions. OH· emitted immediately after the laser flash photolysis of carboxylic acid at the gas-liquid interface have been directly detected by time-resolved, laser-induced florescence techniques that can be used to study atmospheric multiphase photoreactions. In this Featured Article, we show some recent experimental advances in the detection of atmospherically important intermediates at the AWI and the associated reaction mechanisms. We also discuss current challenges and future prospects for atmospheric multiphase chemistry.

The Effects of External Interfaces on Hydrophobic Interactions I: Smooth Surface

External interfaces, such as the air-water and solid-liquid interfaces, are ubiquitous in nature. Hydrophobic interactions are considered the fundamental driving force in many physical and chemical processes occurring in aqueous solutions. It is important to understand the effects of external interfaces on hydrophobic interactions. According to the structural studies on liquid water and the air-water interface, the external interface primarily affects the structure of the topmost water layer (interfacial water). Therefore, an external interface may affect hydrophobic interactions. The effects of interfaces on hydrophobicity are related not only to surface molecular polarity but also to the geometric characteristics of the external interface, such as shape and surface roughness. This study is devoted to understanding the effects of a smooth interface on hydrophobicity. Due to hydrophobic interactions, the solutes tend to accumulate at external interfaces to maximize the hydrogen bonding of water. Additionally, these can be demonstrated by the calculated potential mean forces (PMFs) using molecular dynamic (MD) simulations.

An Electrical Conductivity Sensor for the Selective Determination of Soil Salinity

The measurement of electrical conductivity (EC) has long been a tool for understanding soil properties. Previous studies concluded that EC measurement is not an ion-selective method, but these papers did not address the measurement frequency. An experimental tool and method were developed for semi-factory conditions in a large-scale soil trough at the Institute of Technology of the Hungarian University of Agricultural and Life Sciences. A specially designed and built test apparatus mounted on the tractor's three-point hitch was used as a measuring device. The wear-resistant steel elements of the measuring device were also the sensors for measuring EC. This paper describes the conditions of the measurement series, the measurement results, and our conclusions from the experiments with the soil sensor. Different characteristics were measured in soil moistened with K and Ca solutions at different concentrations. The EC values show an increasing tendency with increasing salt concentration, and we also found that the rate of change of EC is different for different solution ratios. Based on our measurements, we found that the best method to isolate concentration differences is to use the test frequency range 20 Hz-250 kHz.

Surface stratification determines the interfacial water structure of simple electrolyte solutions

The distribution of ions at the air/water interface plays a decisive role in many natural processes. Several studies have reported that larger ions tend to be surface-active, implying ions are located on top of the water surface, thereby inducing electric fields that determine the interfacial water structure. Here we challenge this view by combining surface-specific heterodyne-detected vibrational sum-frequency generation with neural network-assisted ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. Our results show that ions in typical electrolyte solutions are, in fact, located in a subsurface region, leading to a stratification of such interfaces into two distinctive water layers. The outermost surface is ion-depleted, and the subsurface layer is ion-enriched. This surface stratification is a key element in explaining the ion-induced water reorganization at the outermost air/water interface.

Spontaneous Appearance of Triiodide Covering the Topmost Layer of the Iodide Solution Interface Without Photo-Oxidation

Ions containing iodine atoms at the vapor-aqueous solution interfaces critically affect aerosol growth and atmospheric chemistry due to their complex chemical nature and multivalency. While the surface propensity of iodide ions has been intensely discussed in the context of the Hofmeister series, the stability of various ions containing iodine atoms at the vapor-water interface has been debated. Here, we combine surface-specific sum-frequency generation (SFG) vibrational spectroscopy with ab initio molecular dynamics simulations to examine the extent to which iodide ions cover the aqueous surface. The SFG probe of the free O-D stretch mode of heavy water indicates that the free O-D group density decreases drastically at the interface when the bulk NaI concentration exceeds ∼2 M. The decrease in the free O-D group density is attributed to the spontaneous appearance of triiodide that covers the topmost interface rather than to the surface adsorption of iodide. This finding demonstrates that iodide is not surface-active, yet the highly surface-active triiodide is generated spontaneously at the water-air interface, even under dark and oxygen-free conditions. Our study provides an important first step toward clarifying iodine chemistry and pathways for aerosol formation.

Colloidal Quantum Dots for Explosive Detection: Trends and Perspectives

Sensitive, accurate, and reliable detection of explosives has become one of the major needs for international security and environmental protection. Colloidal quantum dots, because of their unique chemical, optical, and electrical properties, as well as easy synthesis route and functionalization, have demonstrated high potential to meet the requirements for the development of suitable sensors, boosting the research in the field of explosive detection. Here, we critically review the most relevant research works, highlighting three different mechanisms for explosive detection based on colloidal quantum dots, namely photoluminescence, electrochemical, and chemoresistive sensing. We provide a comprehensive overview and an extensive discussion and comparison in terms of the most relevant sensor parameters. We highlight advantages, limitations, and challenges of quantum dot-based explosive sensors and outline future research directions for the advancement of knowledge in this surging research field.

Variation of Surface Propensity of Halides with Droplet Size and Temperature: The Planar Interface Limit

The radial number density profiles of halide and alkali ions in aqueous clusters with equimolar radius ≲1.4 nm, which correspond to ≲255 H2O molecules, have been extensively studied by computations. However, the surface abundance of Cl-, Br-, and I- relative to the bulk interior in these smaller clusters may not be representative of the larger systems. Indeed, here we show that the larger the cluster is, the lower the relative surface abundance of chaotropic halides is. In droplets with an equimolar radius of ≈2.45 nm, which corresponds to ≈2000 H2O molecules, the polarizable halides show a clear number density maximum in the droplet's bulk-like interior. A similar pattern is observed in simulations of the aqueous planar interface with halide salts at room temperature. At elevated temperature the surface propensity of Cl- decreases gradually, while that of I- is partially preserved. The change in the chaotropic halide location at higher temperatures than the room temperature may considerably affect photochemical reactivity in atmospheric aerosols, vapor-liquid nucleation and growth mechanisms, and salt crystallization via solvent evaporation. We argue that the commonly used approach of nullifying parameters in a force field in order to find the factors that determine the ion location does not provide transferable insight into other force fields.

Surface tension between liquids containing antagonistic and regular salts

We investigate theoretically the surface tension between two immiscible liquids containing antagonistic and regular salts. The mean-field model includes the electrostatic energy and the Gibbs transfer energy of the ions. We find the Donnan potential difference between the liquids and solve the Poisson-Boltzmann equation to calculate the potential and ion density profiles. When the liquids contain only a regular salt, the surface tension increases when compared to the no-salt case; in contrast, the surface tension is reduced when they contain only an antagonistic salt. When both salts are present, the surface tension can either further decrease or increase depending on the preferential solvation of the ions, in agreement with published experimental observations.

Exploring the impact of ions on oxygen K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy in NaCl solution using the GW-Bethe-Salpeter-equation approach

X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) is a powerful experimental tool to probe the local structure in materials with the core hole excitations. Here, the oxygen K-edge XAS spectra of the NaCl solution and pure water are computed by using a recently developed GW-Bethe-Salpeter equation approach, based on configurations modeled by path-integral molecular dynamics with the deep-learning technique. The neural network is trained on ab initio data obtained with strongly constrained and appropriately normed density functional theory. The observed changes in the XAS features of the NaCl solution, compared to those of pure water, are in good agreement between experimental and theoretical results. We provided detailed explanations for these spectral changes that occur when NaCl is solvated in pure water. Specifically, the presence of solvating ion pairs leads to localization of electron-hole excitons. Our theoretical XAS results support the theory that the effects of the solvating ions on the H-bond network are mainly confined within the first hydration shell of ions, however beyond the shell the arrangement of water molecules remains to be comparable to that observed in pure water.

Self-Supported Ag/Pt/Pd Alloy Aerogels as High-Performance Bifunctional and Durable Electrocatalysts for Methanol and Ethanol Oxidation Reactions

Assembly of nanoparticles (NPs) into functional macrostructures is imperative for the development of NP-based devices. However, existing methods employ insulating organic ligands, polymers, and biomolecules as mediators for the NP assembly, which are detrimental for charge transport and interparticle coupling that impede the efficient integration of low-dimensional properties. Herein, we report a methodology for the direct self-supported assembly of Ag/Pt/Pd alloy NPs into high surface area (119.1 ± 3.9 to 140.1 ± 5.7 m2/g), mesoporous (19.7 ± 6.2 to 23.0 ± 1.6 nm), and conducting nanostructures (aerogels) that show superior electrocatalytic activity and stability in methanol (MOR) and ethanol (EOR) oxidation reactions. Ultrasmall (3.9 ± 1.3 nm) and quasi-spherical Ag/Pt/Pd alloy NPs were synthesized via stepwise galvanic replacement reaction (GRR) of glutathione (GSH)-coated Ag NPs. As-synthesized NPs were transformed into free-standing alloy hydrogels via chemical oxidation of the GSH ligands. The composition of alloy aerogels was tuned by varying the oxidant/thiolate molar ratio of the precursor NP sol that prompts Ag dealloying with in situ generated HNO3, selectively enriching the Pt and Pd catalytic sites on the aerogel surface. The highest-performing alloy aerogel (Ag0.449Pt0.480Pd0.071) demonstrates excellent mass activity for methanol (3179.5 mA/mg) and ethanol (2444.5 mA/mg) electro-oxidation reactions, which are ∼4-5 times higher than those of commercial Pt/C and Pd/C electrocatalysts. The aerogel also maintained high alcohol oxidation activity for 17 h at a constant potential of -0.3 V in an alkaline medium. The synergistic effects of noble metal alloying, high surface area and mesoporosity, and the pristine active surface of aerogels provide efficient interaction of analytes with the nanostructure surface, facilitating both MOR and EOR activity and improving tolerance for poisonous byproducts, enabling the Ag/Pt/Pd alloy aerogel a promising (electro)catalyst for a number of new technologies.

Locking water molecules via ternary O-H⋯O intramolecular hydrogen bonds in perhydroxylated closo-dodecaborate

A multitude of applications related to perhydroxylated closo-dodecaborate B12(OH)122- in the condensed phase are inseparable from the fundamental mechanisms underlying the high water orientation selectivity based on the base B12(OH)122-. Herein, we directly compare the structural evolution of water clusters, ranging from monomer to hexamer, oriented by functional groups in the bases B12H122-, B12H11OH2- and B12(OH)122- using multiple theoretical methods. A significant revelation is made regarding B12(OH)122-: each additional water molecule is locked into the intramolecular hydrogen bond B-O-H ternary ring in an embedded form. This new pattern of water cluster growth suggests that B-(H-O)⋯H-O interactions prevail over the competition from water-hydrogen bonds (O⋯H-O), distinguishing it from the behavior observed in B12H122- and B12H11OH2- bases, in which competition arises from a mixed competing model involving dihydrogen bonds (B-H⋯H-O), conventional hydrogen bonds (B-(H-O)⋯H-O) and water hydrogen bonds (O⋯H-O). Through aqueous solvation and ab initio molecular dynamics analysis, we further demonstrate the largest water clusters in the first hydrated shell with exceptional thermodynamic stability around B12(OH)122-. These findings provide a solid scientific foundation for the design of boron cluster chemistry incorporating hydroxyl-group-modified borate salts with potential implications for various applications.

Specific Ion Effects at the Vapor-Formamide Interface: A Reverse Hofmeister Series in Ion Concentration Depth Profiles

Employing neutral impact collision ion scattering spectroscopy (NICISS), we have directly measured the concentration depth profiles (CDPs) of various monovalent ions at the vapor-formamide interface. NICISS provides CDPs of individual ions by measuring the energy loss of neutral helium atoms backscattered from the solution interface. CDPs at the vapor-formamide interface of Cl-, Br-, I-, Na+, K+, and Cs+ are measured and compared to elucidate the interfacial specific ion trends. We report a reverse Hofmeister series in the presence of inorganic ions (anion and cation) at the vapor-formamide interface relative to the water-vapor interface, and the CDPs are found to be independent of the counterion for most ions studied. Thus, ions at the surface of formamide follow a "Hofmeister paradigm" where the counterion does not impact the ion series. These specific ion trends are complemented with surface tension and X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) measurements on formamide electrolyte solutions.

Inversion model for extracting chemically resolved depth profiles across liquid interfaces of various configurations from XPS data: PROPHESY

PROPHESY, a technique for the reconstruction of surface-depth profiles from X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy data, is introduced. The inversion methodology is based on a Bayesian framework and primal-dual convex optimization. The acquisition model is developed for several geometries representing different sample types: plane (bulk sample), cylinder (liquid microjet) and sphere (droplet). The methodology is tested and characterized with respect to simulated data as a proof of concept. Possible limitations of the method due to uncertainty in the attenuation length of the photo-emitted electron are illustrated.

Implications in Halotherapy of Aerosols from the Salt Mine Targu Ocna-Structural-Functional Characteristics

The paper presents the evolution of the concentration level for four particle size groups of microaerosols (1.0, 2.5, 4.0 and 10.0 µm) in correlation with the microclimatic characteristics (temperature, humidity, lighting, pressure and concentration in CO₂ and O₂) in three active areas of the Targu Ocna Saltworks, currently used in treatments with solions (hydrated aerosols): in the vicinity of the walls of the old mining salt room, where there is a semi-wet static regime (SSR); in the transition area between the old rooms of exploitation with the semi-wet dynamic regime (DSR); and in the area of the waterfall and the marshy lake with the dynamic wet regime (DWR). The first and last halochamber are the ones recommended for cardio-respiratory, immuno-thyroid and osteo-muscular conditions, as well as in psycho-motor disorders. Based on questionnaires carried out over the course of a year, between 1 September 2021-31 August 2022, in two periods of stationing/treatment: a cold one (15 September 2021-15 December 2021) and a warm one (1 May 2022-30 July 2022), correlated with the data from the Salina medical office, achieved the profile of the improvement rate of the patients' ailments depending on the type of treatment (working regime in halochambers). These studies have allowed the optimization of the treatment conditions in the artificial surface halochambers in order to reduce the stationary period and optimize the treatment cycles.

Ions Speciation at the Water-Air Interface

In typical aqueous systems, including naturally occurring sweet and salt water and tap water, multiple ion species are co-solvated. At the water-air interface, these ions are known to affect the chemical reactivity, aerosol formation, climate, and water odor. Yet, the composition of ions at the water interface has remained enigmatic. Here, using surface-specific heterodyne-detected sum-frequency generation spectroscopy, we quantify the relative surface activity of two co-solvated ions in solution. We find that more hydrophobic ions are speciated to the interface due to the hydrophilic ions. Quantitative analysis shows that the interfacial hydrophobic ion population increases with decreasing interfacial hydrophilic ion population at the interface. Simulations show that the solvation energy difference between the ions and the intrinsic surface propensity of ions determine the extent of an ion's speciation by other ions. This mechanism provides a unified view of the speciation of monatomic and polyatomic ions at electrolyte solution interfaces.

Ångstrom-Depth Resolution with Chemical Specificity at the Liquid-Vapor Interface

The determination of depth profiles across interfaces is of primary importance in many scientific and technological areas. Photoemission spectroscopy is in principle well suited for this purpose, yet a quantitative implementation for investigations of liquid-vapor interfaces is hindered by the lack of understanding of electron-scattering processes in liquids. Previous studies have shown, however, that core-level photoelectron angular distributions (PADs) are altered by depth-dependent elastic electron scattering and can, thus, reveal information on the depth distribution of species across the interface. Here, we explore this concept further and show that the experimental anisotropy parameter characterizing the PAD scales linearly with the average distance of atoms along the surface normal obtained by molecular dynamics simulations. This behavior can be accounted for in the low-collision-number regime. We also show that results for different atomic species can be compared on the same length scale. We demonstrate that atoms separated by about 1 Å along the surface normal can be clearly distinguished with this method, achieving excellent depth resolution.

Low-Concentration Redox-Electrolytes for High-Rate and Long-Life Zinc Metal Batteries

The uncontrolled zinc electrodeposition and side reactions severely limit the power density and lifespan of Zn metal batteries. Herein, the multi-level interface adjustment effect is realized with low-concentration redox-electrolytes (0.2 m KI) additives. The iodide ions adsorbed on the zinc surface significantly suppress water-induced side reactions and by-product formation and enhance the kinetics of zinc deposition. The distribution of relaxation times results reveal that iodide ions can reduce the desolvation energy of hydrated zinc ions and guide the deposition of zinc ions due to their strong nucleophilicity. As a consequence, the Zn||Zn symmetric cell achieves superior cycling stability (>3000 h at 1 mA cm^-2 , 1 mAh cm^-2 ) accompanied by a uniform deposition and a fast reaction kinetics with a low voltage hysteresis (<30 mV). Additionally, coupled with an activated carbon (AC) cathode, the assembled Zn||AC cell delivers a high-capacity retention of 81.64% after 2000 cycles at 4 A g^-1 . More importantly, the operando electrochemical UV-vis spectroscopies show that a small number of I₃ ^- can spontaneously react with the dead zinc as well as basic zinc saltsand regenerate iodide ions and zinc ions; thus, the Coulombic efficiency of each charge-discharge process is close to 100%.

Inequivalent Solvation Effects on the N 1s Levels of Self-Associated Melamine Molecules in Aqueous Solution

This work shows how the N 1s photoemission (PE) spectrum of self-associated melamine molecules in aqueous solution has been successfully rationalized using an integrated computational approach encompassing classical metadynamics simulations and quantum calculations based on density functional theory (DFT). The first approach allowed us to describe interacting melamine molecules in explicit waters and to identify dimeric configurations based on π-π and/or H-bonding interactions. Then, N 1s binding energies (BEs) and PE spectra were computed at the DFT level for all structures both in the gas phase and in an implicit solvent. While pure π-stacked dimers show gas-phase PE spectra almost identical to that of the monomer, those of the H-bonded dimers are sensibly affected by NH···NH or NH···NC interactions. Interestingly, the solvation suppresses all of the non-equivalences due to the H-bonds yielding similar PE spectra for all dimers, matching very well our measurements.

Interactions between Small Inorganic Ions and Uncharged Monolayers on the Water/Air Interface

The interaction of several simple electrolytes with uncharged insoluble monolayers is studied on the basis of tensiometric and potentiometric data for the surface electrolyte solution|air. The induced adsorption of electrolyte on the monolayer is determined via a combination of data for equilibrium spreading pressure and surface pressure versus area isotherms. We show that the monolayer-induced adsorption of electrolyte is not only strongly ion-specific but also surfactant-specific. The comparison between the ion-specific effects on a carboxylic acid monolayer at low pH and an ester monolayer shows that the anion series follows the same order while the cation series reverses. The effect of the electrolyte on the chemical potential of the monolayer shows attraction between the surfactant and the ions at low monolayer densities, but at high surface densities, repulsion seems to come into play. In nearly all investigated cases, a maximum of monolayer-induced electrolyte adsorption is observed at intermediate monolayer densities. This suggests specific interactions between the surfactant headgroup and the ions. The Volta potential data for the monolayers are analyzed on the basis of the equations of quadrupolar electrostatics. The analysis suggests that the ion-specific effect on the Volta potential is due to the ion-specific decrement of the bulk dielectric constant of the electrolyte solution. Moreover, we present evidence that in most cases the effect of the electrolyte on the orientation of the adsorbed dipoles cannot be neglected. Instead, the change in the ion distribution in the electric double layer seems to have a small effect on the Volta potential.

Surface or Internal Hydration - Does It Really Matter?

The precise location of an ion or electron, whether it is internally solvated or residing on the surface of a water cluster, remains an intriguing question. Subtle differences in the hydrogen bonding network may lead to a preference for one or the other. Here we discuss spectroscopic probes of the structure of gas-phase hydrated ions in combination with quantum chemistry, as well as H/D exchange as a means of structure elucidation. With the help of nanocalorimetry, we look for thermochemical signatures of surface vs internal solvation. Examples of strongly size-dependent reactivity are reviewed which illustrate the influence of surface vs internal solvation on unimolecular rearrangements of the cluster, as well as on the rate and product distribution of ion-molecule reactions.

Core-Level Photoelectron Angular Distributions at the Liquid-Vapor Interface

ConspectusPhotoelectron spectroscopy (PES) is a powerful tool for the investigation of liquid-vapor interfaces, with applications in many fields from environmental chemistry to fundamental physics. Among the aspects that have been addressed with PES is the question of how molecules and ions arrange and distribute themselves within the interface, that is, the first few nanometers into solution. This information is of crucial importance, for instance, for atmospheric chemistry, to determine which species are exposed in what concentration to the gas-phase environment. Other topics of interest include the surface propensity of surfactants, their tendency for orientation and self-assembly, as well as ion double layers beneath the liquid-vapor interface. The chemical specificity and surface sensitivity of PES make it in principle well suited for this endeavor. Ideally, one would want to access complete atomic-density distributions along the surface normal, which, however, is difficult to achieve experimentally for reasons to be outlined in this Account. A major complication is the lack of accurate information on electron transport and scattering properties, especially in the kinetic-energy regime below 100 eV, a pre-requisite to retrieving the depth information contained in photoelectron signals.In this Account, we discuss the measurement of the photoelectron angular distributions (PADs) as a way to obtain depth information. Photoelectrons scatter with a certain probability when moving through the bulk liquid before being expelled into a vacuum. Elastic scattering changes the electron direction without a change in the electron kinetic energy, in contrast to inelastic scattering. Random elastic-scattering events usually lead to a reduction of the measured anisotropy as compared to the initial, that is, nascent PAD. This effect that would be considered parasitic when attempting to retrieve information on photoionization dynamics from nascent liquid-phase PADs can be turned into a powerful tool to access information on elastic scattering, and hence probing depth, by measuring core-level PADs. Core-level PADs are relatively unaffected by effects other than elastic scattering, such as orbital character changes due to solvation. By comparing a molecule's gas-phase angular anisotropy, assumed to represent the nascent PAD, with its liquid-phase anisotropy, one can estimate the magnitude of elastic versus inelastic scattering experienced by photoelectrons on their way to the surface from the site at which they were generated. Scattering events increase with increasing depth into solution, and thus it is possible to correlate the observed reduction in angular anisotropy with the depth below the surface along the surface normal.We will showcase this approach for a few examples. In particular, our recent works on surfactant molecules demonstrated that one can indeed probe atomic distances within these molecules with a high sensitivity of ∼1 Å resolution along the surface normal. We were also able to show that the anisotropy reduction scales linearly with the distance along the surface normal within certain limits. The limits and prospects of this technique are discussed at the end, with a focus on possible future applications, including depth profiling at solid-vapor interfaces.

Solvation, Surface Propensity, and Chemical Reactions of Solutes at Atmospheric Liquid-Vapor Interfaces

surface is covered by oceans, a large number of liquid aerosol particles fill the air, and clouds hold a tiny but critical fraction of Earth's water in the air to influence our climate and hydrology, enabling the lives of humans and ecosystems. The surfaces of these liquids provide the interface for the transfer of gases, for nucleation processes, and for catalyzing important chemical reactions. Coupling a range of spectroscopic tools to liquid microjets has become an important approach to better understanding dynamics, structure, and chemistry at liquid interfaces. Liquid microjets offer stability in vacuum and ambient pressure environments, thus also allowing X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) with manageable efforts in terms of differential pumping. Liquid microjets are operated at speeds sufficient to allow for a locally equilibrated surface in terms of water dynamics and solute surface partitioning. XPS is based on the emission of core-level electrons, the binding energy of which is selective for the element and its chemical environment. Inelastic scattering of electrons establishes the probing depth of XPS in the nanometer range and thus its surface sensitivity.In this Account, we focus on aqueous solutions relevant to the surface of oceans, aqueous aerosols, or cloudwater. We are interested in understanding solvation and acid dissociation at the interface, interfacial aspects of reactions with gas-phase reactants, and the interplay of ions with organic molecules at the interface. The strategy is to obtain a link between the molecular-level picture and macroscopic properties and reactivity in the atmospheric context.We show consistency between surface tension and XPS for a range of surface-active organic species as an important proof for interrogating an equilibrated liquid surface. Measurements with organic acids and amines offer important insight into the question of apparent acidity or basicity at the interface. Liquid microjet XPS has settled the debate of the surface enhancement of halide ions, shown using the example of bromide and its oxidation products. Despite the absence of a strong enhancement for the bromide ion, its rate of oxidation by ozone is surface catalyzed through the stabilization of the bromide ozonide intermediate at the interface. In another reaction system, the one between Fe²⁺ and H₂O₂, a similar intermediate in the form of highly valent iron species could not be detected by XPS under the experimental conditions employed, shedding light on the abundance of this intermediate in the environment but also on the constraints within which surface species can be detected. Emphasizing the importance of electrostatic effects, we show how a cationic surfactant attracts charged bromide anions to the interface, accompanied by enhanced oxidation rates by ozone, overriding the role of surfactants as a barrier for the access of gas-phase reactants. The reactivity and structure at interfaces thus result from a subtle balance between hygroscopic and hydrophobic interactions, electrostatic effects, and the structural properties of both liquids and solutes.

X-Ray absorption spectroscopy on airborne aerosols

Here we demonstrate a method for performing X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) on airborne aerosols. XAS provides unique insight into elemental composition, chemical and phase state, local coordination and electronic structure of both crystalline and amorphous matter. The aerosol is generated from different salt solutions using a commercial atomizer and dried using a diffusion drier. Embedded in a carrier gas, the aerosol is guided into the experimental chamber for XAS analysis. Typical particle sizes range from some 10 to a few 100 nm. Inside the chamber the aerosol bearing gas is then confined into a region of about 1-2 cm³ in size, by a pure flow of helium, generating a stable free-flowing stream of aerosol. It is hit by a monochromatic X-ray beam, and the emitted fluorescent light is used for spectroscopic analysis. Using an aerosol generated from CaCl₂, KCl, and (NH₄)₂SO₄ salt solutions, we demonstrate the functionality of the system in studying environmentally relevant systems. In addition, we show that the detection limits are sufficient to also observe subtle spectroscopic signatures in XAS spectra with integration times of about 1-2 hours using a bright undulator beamline. This novel setup opens new research opportunities for studying the nucleation of new phases in multicomponent aerosol systems in situ, and for investigating (photo-) chemical reactions on airborne matter, as relevant to both atmospheric science and also for general chemical application.

Effect of sodium chloride adsorption on the surface premelting of ice

We characterise the structural properties of the quasi-liquid layer (QLL) at two low-index ice surfaces in the presence of sodium chloride (Na⁺/Cl^-) ions by molecular dynamics simulations. We find that the presence of a high surface density of Na⁺/Cl^- pairs changes the surface melting behaviour from step-wise to gradual melting. The ions lead to an overall increase of the thickness and the disorder of the QLL, and to a low-temperature roughening transition of the air-ice interface. The local molecular structure of the QLL is similar to that of liquid water, and the differences between the basal and primary prismatic surface are attenuated by the presence of Na⁺/Cl^- pairs. These changes modify the crystal growth rates of different facets and the solvation environment at the surface of sea-water ice with a potential impact on light scattering and environmental chemical reactions.

Polarization-Dependent Heterodyne-Detected Sum-Frequency Generation Spectroscopy as a Tool to Explore Surface Molecular Orientation and Ångström-Scale Depth Profiling

Sum-frequency generation (SFG) spectroscopy provides a unique optical probe for interfacial molecules with interface-specificity and molecular specificity. SFG measurements can be further carried out at different polarization combinations, but the target of the polarization-dependent SFG is conventionally limited to investigating the molecular orientation. Here, we explore the possibility of polarization-dependent SFG (PD-SFG) measurements with heterodyne detection (HD-PD-SFG). We stress that HD-PD-SFG enables accurate determination of the peak amplitude, a key factor of the PD-SFG data. Subsequently, we outline that HD-PD-SFG can be used not only for estimating the molecular orientation but also for investigating the interfacial dielectric profile and studying the depth profile of molecules. We further illustrate the variety of combined simulation and PD-SFG studies.

Photoionization of the aqueous phase: clusters, droplets and liquid jets

This perspective article reviews specific challenges associated with photoemission spectroscopy of bulk liquid water, aqueous solutions, water droplets and water clusters. The main focus lies on retrieving accurate energetics and photoelectron angular information from measured photoemission spectra, and on the question how these quantities differ in different aqueous environments. Measured photoelectron band shapes, vertical binding energies (ionization energies), and photoelectron angular distributions are influenced by various phenomena. We discuss the influences of multiple energy-dependent electron scattering in aqueous environments, and we discuss different energy referencing methods, including the application of a bias voltage to access absolute energetics of solvent and solute. Recommendations how to account for or minimize the influence of electron scattering are provided. The example of the hydrated electron in different aqueous environments illustrates how one can account for electron scattering, while reliable methods addressing parasitic potentials and proper energy referencing are demonstrated for ionization from the outermost valence orbital of neat liquid water.

Polarization-Dependent Sum-Frequency Generation Spectroscopy for Ångstrom-Scale Depth Profiling of Molecules at Interfaces

The three-dimensional spatial distribution of molecules at soft matter interfaces is crucial for processes ranging from membrane biophysics to atmospheric chemistry. While several techniques can access surface composition, obtaining information on the depth distribution is challenging. We develop a noninvasive, polarization-resolved, surface-specific sum-frequency generation spectroscopy providing quantitative depth information. We demonstrate the technique on formic acid molecules at the air-water interface. With increasing molar fraction from 2.5% to 10%, the formic acid molecules shift, on average, ∼0.9  Å into the bulk. The consistency with the simulation data manifests that the technique allows for probing the Ångstrom-scale depth profile.

Evaporation and Molecular Beam Scattering from a Flat Liquid Jet

An experimental setup for molecular beam scattering from flat liquid sheets has been developed, with the goal of studying reactions at gas-liquid interfaces for volatile liquids. Specifically, a crossed molecular beam instrument that can measure angular and translational energy distributions of scattered products has been adapted for liquid jet scattering. A microfluidic chip is used to create a stable flat liquid sheet inside vacuum from which scattering occurs, and both evaporation and scattering from this sheet are characterized using a rotatable mass spectrometer that can measure product time-of-flight distributions. This article describes the instrument and reports on the first measurements of evaporation of dodecane and Ne from a Ne-doped dodecane flat jet, as well as scattering of Ne from a flat jet of pure dodecane.

Understanding specific ion effects and the Hofmeister series

Specific ion effects (SIE), encompassing the Hofmeister Series, have been known for more than 130 years since Hofmeister and Lewith's foundational work. SIEs are ubiquitous and are observed across the medical, biological, chemical and industrial sciences. Nevertheless, no general predictive theory has yet been able to explain ion specificity across these fields; it remains impossible to predict when, how, and to what magnitude, a SIE will be observed. In part, this is due to the complexity of real systems in which ions, counterions, solvents and cosolutes all play varying roles, which give rise to anomalies and reversals in anticipated SIEs. Herein we review the historical explanations for SIE in water and the key ion properties that have been attributed to them. Systems where the Hofmeister series is perturbed or reversed are explored, as is the behaviour of ions at the liquid-vapour interface. We discuss SIEs in mixed electrolytes, nonaqueous solvents, and in highly concentrated electrolyte solutions - exciting frontiers in this field with particular relevance to biological and electrochemical applications. We conclude the perspective by summarising the challenges and opportunities facing this SIE research that highlight potential pathways towards a general predictive theory of SIE.

Ab initio study of hydrated cesium iodide dimer (CsI)2-/0(H2O)0-6 and the cation size effect on (MI)2-/0(H2O)0-6 (M = Li, Na, K, Cs)

The structures of microsolvated (CsI)₂^-/0(H₂O)_0-6 clusters were determined using ab initio calculations. Our studies show that one Cs atom at the apex was firstly separated from the pyramid-shaped (CsI)₂^- unit when the water number reaches 3, whereas CsI distances did not increase significantly from n = 0 to 6 for neutrals. Additionally, the atomic charge and reduced density gradient analyses were carried out; the results reveal that the extra electrons are almost entirely localized on terminal Cs atom and the Cs⁺-water interactions dominate in (CsI)₂^-(H₂O)_0-6. The water-water interactions show up at n = 5. The comparison of (CsI)₂^-/0(H₂O)_n with (MI)₂^-/0(H₂O)_n (M = Li, Na, K) shows that neutral (CsI)₂ is the most difficult to be separated, which matches the law of matching water affinity. As for anions, the most difficult separation occurs in the case of small size (LiI)₂^- due to the effect of extra electrons, and (MI)₂^- with larger size cation is more likely to interact with water to form a pyramid structure.

Solvent and cosolute dependence of Mg surface enrichment in submicron aerosol particles

The formation of multicomponent aerosol particles from precursor solution droplets often involves segregation and surface enrichment of the different solutes, resulting in non-homogeneous particle structures and diverse morphologies. In particular, these effects can have a significant influence on the chemical composition of the particle-vapor interface. In this work, we investigate the bulk/surface partitioning of inorganic ions, Na+, Mg2 +, Ca2 +, Cl- and Br-, in atomiser-generated submicron aerosols using synchrotron radiation based X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Specifically, the chemical compositions of the outermost few nm thick surface layers of non-supported MgCl2/CaCl2 and NaBr/MgBr2 particles are determined. It is found that in MgCl2/CaCl2 particles, the relative abundance of the two species in the particle surface correlates well with their mixing ratio in the parent aqueous solution. In stark contrast, extreme surface enrichment of Mg2 + is observed in NaBr/MgBr2 particles formed from both aqueous and organic solution droplets, indicative of core-shell structures. Structural properties and hydration state of the particles are discussed.

A setup for studies of photoelectron circular dichroism from chiral molecules in aqueous solution

We present a unique experimental design that enables the measurement of photoelectron circular dichroism (PECD) from chiral molecules in aqueous solution. The effect is revealed from the intensity difference of photoelectron emission into a backward-scattering angle relative to the photon propagation direction when ionizing with circularly polarized light of different helicity. This leads to asymmetries (normalized intensity differences) that depend on the handedness of the chiral sample and exceed the ones in conventional dichroic mechanisms by orders of magnitude. The asymmetry is largest for photon energies within several electron volts above the ionization threshold. A primary aim is to explore the effect of hydration on PECD. The modular and flexible design of our experimental setup EASI (Electronic structure from Aqueous Solutions and Interfaces) also allows for detection of more common photoelectron angular distributions, requiring distinctively different detection geometries and typically using linearly polarized light. A microjet is used for liquid-sample delivery. We describe EASI's technical features and present two selected experimental results, one based on synchrotron-light measurements and the other performed in the laboratory, using monochromatized He-II α radiation. The former demonstrates the principal effectiveness of PECD detection, illustrated for prototypic gas-phase fenchone. We also discuss the first data from liquid fenchone. In the second example, we present valence photoelectron spectra from liquid water and NaI aqueous solution, here obtained from a planar-surface microjet (flatjet). This new development features a more favorable symmetry for angle-dependent photoelectron measurements.

Anion Specific Effects at Negatively Charged Interfaces: Influence of Cl-, Br-, I-, and SCN- on the Interactions of Na+ with the Carboxylic Acid Moiety

Unlike counterion interactions with charged interfaces, the influence of co-ions is only scarcely reported in the literature. In this work, the effect of SCN- and the halide co-ions in the interactions of Na+ with carboxylic acid Langmuir monolayers is investigated by using vibrational sum frequency spectroscopy. At 1 M concentrations in the subphase, the identity of the anion is shown to have a remarkable influence on the charging behavior and degree of deprotonation of the monolayer, with ions ordering in the sequence I- > SCN- > Cl- ≈ Br-. The same trend is observed at both pH 6 and pH 9 when the monolayer is intrinsically more charged. Spectroscopic evidence is found for both the presence of I- and SCN- in the interfacial region at levels close to their detection limits. The results contradict electrostatic theories on charged interfaces where co-ions are not expected to play any significant role. The higher propensity for the large polarizable anions to deprotonate the monolayer is explained in terms of their ability to modify the cations affinity toward the carboxylic acid groups present at the surface.

Atomically dispersed Pb ionic sites in PbCdSe quantum dot gels enhance room-temperature NO2 sensing

Atmospheric NO2 is of great concern due to its adverse effects on human health and the environment, motivating research on NO2 detection and remediation. Existing low-cost room-temperature NO2 sensors often suffer from low sensitivity at the ppb level or long recovery times, reflecting the trade-off between sensor response and recovery time. Here, we report an atomically dispersed metal ion strategy to address it. We discover that bimetallic PbCdSe quantum dot (QD) gels containing atomically dispersed Pb ionic sites achieve the optimal combination of strong sensor response and fast recovery, leading to a high-performance room-temperature p-type semiconductor NO2 sensor as characterized by a combination of ultra-low limit of detection, high sensitivity and stability, fast response and recovery. With the help of theoretical calculations, we reveal the high performance of the PbCdSe QD gel arises from the unique tuning effects of Pb ionic sites on NO2 binding at their neighboring Cd sites.

Exploring the Solvation of Acetic Acid in Water Using Liquid Jet X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy and Core Level Electron Binding Energy Calculations

Liquid jet X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy was used to investigate changes in the local electronic structure of acetic acid in the bulk of aqueous solutions induced by solvation effects. These effects manifest themselves as shifts in the difference in the carbon 1s binding energy (ΔBE) between the methyl and carboxyl carbons of acetic acid. Furthermore, molecular dynamics simulations, coupled with correlated electronic structure calculations of the first solvation sphere, provide insight into the number of water molecules directly interacting with the carboxyl group that are required to match the ΔBE from the photoelectron spectroscopy experiments. This comparison shows that a single water molecule in the first solvation shell describes the photoelectron ΔBE of acetic acid while at least 20 water molecules are required for the conjugate base, acetate, in aqueous solutions.

Low Density Interior in Supercooled Aqueous Nanodroplets Expels Ions to the Subsurface

The interaction between water and ions within droplets plays a key role in the chemical reactivity of atmospheric and man-made aerosols. Here we report direct computational evidence that in supercooled aqueous nanodroplets a lower density core of tetrahedrally coordinated water expels the cosmotropic ions to the denser and more disordered subsurface. In contrast, at room temperature, depending on the nature of the ion, the radial distribution in the droplet core is nearly uniform or elevated toward the center. We analyze the spatial distribution of a single ion in terms of a reference electrostatic model. The energy of the system in the analytical model is expressed as the sum of the electrostatic and surface energy of a deformable droplet. The model predicts that the ion is subject to a harmonic potential centered at the droplet's center of mass. We name this effect "electrostatic confinement". The model's predictions are consistent with the simulation findings for a single ion at room temperature but not at supercooling. We anticipate this study to be the starting point for investigating the structure of supercooled (electro)sprayed droplets that are used to preserve the conformations of macromolecules originating from the bulk solution.

Probing Interfacial Effects on Ionization Energies: The Surprising Banality of Anion-Water Hydrogen Bonding at the Air/Water Interface

Liquid microjet photoelectron spectroscopy is an increasingly common technique to measure vertical ionization energies (VIEs) of aqueous solutes, but the interpretation of these experiments is subject to questions regarding sensitivity to bulk versus interfacial solvation environments. We have computed aqueous-phase VIEs for a set of inorganic anions, using a combination of molecular dynamics simulations and electronic structure calculations, with results that are in excellent agreement with experiment regardless of whether the simulation data are restricted to ions at the air/water interface or to those in bulk aqueous solution. Although the computed VIEs are sensitive to ion-water hydrogen bonding, we find that the short-range solvation structure is sufficiently similar in both environments that it proves impossible to discriminate between the two on the basis of the VIE, a conclusion that has important implications for the interpretation of liquid-phase photoelectron spectroscopy. More generally, analysis of the simulation data suggests that the surface activity of soft anions is largely a second or third solvation shell effect, arising from disruption of water-water hydrogen bonds and not from significant changes in first-shell anion-water hydrogen bonding.

Insight into the Ionizing Surface Potential Method and Aqueous Sodium Halide Surfaces

Complementing the microscopic picture of the surface structure of electrolyte solutions set out by previous theoretical and experimental studies, the ionizing surface potential technique offers a unique approach to quantifying the impact of aqueous inorganic ions upon the interfacial electric field of the air-aqueous interface. In this Feature Article, we review the vulnerability of theoretical and empirically derived χ_water values as a normative reference for aqueous ion surface potentials. Instead, we recognize and evaluate aqueous ion surface potentials relative to well-known ionic surfactants cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). Additionally, we also explore factors that impact the magnitude of the measured surface potentials using the ionizing method, particularly in the type of reference electrode and ionizing gas environment. With potential measurements of sodium halide solutions, we show that iodide has a dominant effect on the air-aqueous electric field. Compared to chloride and bromide, iodide is directly observed with a net negatively charged surface electric field at all salt concentrations measured (0.2 to 3.0 mol/kg water). Also, above the 2 M region, bromide is observed with a net negatively charged surface. Although several scenarios contribute to this effect, it is most likely due to the surface enrichment of bromide and iodide. While the results of this study are pertinent to determining the specific interfacial reactivity of aqueous halides, these anions seldom transpire as single-halide systems in the natural environment. Therefore, we also provide an outlook on future research concerning surface potential methods and more complex aqueous electrolyte systems.

Core and Valence Level Photoelectron Spectroscopy of Nanosolvated KCl

The solvation of alkali and halide ions in the aqueous environment has been a subject of intense experimental and theoretical research with multidisciplinary interests; yet, a comprehensive molecular-level understanding has still not been obtained. In recent years, electron spectroscopy has been increasingly applied to study the electronic and structural properties of aqueous ions with implications, especially in atmospheric chemistry. In this work, we report core and valence level (Cl 2p, Cl 3p, and K 3p) photoelectron spectra of the common alkali halide, KCl, doped in gas-phase water clusters in the size range of a few hundred water molecules. The results indicate that the electronic structure of these nanosolutions shows a distinct character from that observed at the liquid-vapor interface in liquid microjets and ambient pressure setups. Insights are provided into the unique solvation properties of ions in a nanoaqueous environment, emerging properties of bulk electrolyte solutions with growing cluster size, and sensitivity of the electronic structure to varying solvation configurations.

Image-charge effects on ion adsorption near aqueous interfaces

Electrostatic interactions near surfaces and interfaces are ubiquitous in many fields of science. Continuum electrostatics predicts that ions will be attracted to conducting electrodes but repelled by surfaces with lower dielectric constant than the solvent. However, several recent studies found that certain "chaotropic" ions have similar adsorption behavior at air/water and graphene/water interfaces. Here we systematically study the effect of polarization of the surface, the solvent, and solutes on the adsorption of ions onto the electrode surfaces using molecular dynamics simulation. An efficient method is developed to treat an electrolyte system between two parallel conducting surfaces by exploiting the mirror-expanded symmetry of the exact image-charge solution. With neutral surfaces, the image interactions induced by the solvent dipoles and ions largely cancel each other, resulting in no significant net differences in the ion adsorption profile regardless of the surface polarity. Under an external electric field, the adsorption of ions is strongly affected by the surface polarization, such that the charge separation across the electrolyte and the capacitance of the cell is greatly enhanced with a conducting surface over a low-dielectric-constant surface. While the extent of ion adsorption is highly dependent on the electrolyte model (the polarizability of solvent and solutes, as well as the van der Waals radii), we find the effect of surface polarization on ion adsorption is consistent throughout different electrolyte models.

Low-energy constraints on photoelectron spectra measured from liquid water and aqueous solutions

We report on the effects of electron collision and indirect ionization processes, occurring at photoexcitation and electron kinetic energies well below 30 eV, on the photoemission spectra of liquid water. We show that the nascent photoelectron spectrum and, hence, the inferred electron binding energy can only be accurately determined if electron energies are large enough that cross sections for quasi-elastic scattering processes, such as vibrational excitation, are negligible. Otherwise, quasi-elastic scattering leads to strong, down-to-few-meV kinetic energy scattering losses from the direct photoelectron features, which manifest in severely distorted intrinsic photoelectron peak shapes. The associated cross-over point from predominant (known) electronically inelastic to quasi-elastic scattering seems to arise at surprisingly large electron kinetic energies, of approximately 10-14 eV. Concomitantly, we present evidence for the onset of indirect, autoionization phenomena (occurring via superexcited states) within a few eV of the primary and secondary ionization thresholds. These processes are inferred to compete with the direct ionization channels and primarily produce low-energy photoelectrons at photon and electron impact excitation energies below ∼15 eV. Our results highlight that vibrational inelastic electron scattering processes and neutral photoexcitation and autoionization channels become increasingly important when photon and electron kinetic energies are decreased towards the ionization threshold. Correspondingly, we show that for neat water and aqueous solutions, great care must be taken when quantitatively analyzing photoelectron spectra measured too close to the ionization threshold. Such care is essential for the accurate determination of solvent and solute ionization energies as well as photoelectron branching ratios and peak magnitudes.

Core level photoelectron spectroscopy of heterogeneous reactions at liquid-vapor interfaces: Current status, challenges, and prospects

Liquid-vapor interfaces, particularly those between aqueous solutions and air, drive numerous important chemical and physical processes in the atmosphere and in the environment. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy is an excellent method for the investigation of these interfaces due to its surface sensitivity, elemental and chemical specificity, and the possibility to obtain information on the depth distribution of solute and solvent species in the interfacial region. In this Perspective, we review the progress that was made in this field over the past decades and discuss the challenges that need to be overcome for investigations of heterogeneous reactions at liquid-vapor interfaces under close-to-realistic environmental conditions. We close with an outlook on where some of the most exciting and promising developments might lie in this field.

Methylguanidinium at the Air/Water Interface: A Simulation Study with the Drude Polarizable Force Field

Methylguanidinium is an important molecular ion, which also serves as the model compound for the arginine side chain. We studied the structure and dynamics of the methylguanidium ion at the air/water interface by molecular dynamics simulations employing the Drude polarizable force field. We found out that methylguanidinium accumulated at the interface, with a majority adopting tilted conformations. We also demonstrated that methylguanidinium and guanidinium ions had different preference toward the air/water interface. Detailed analysis of induced dipole moments showed how ions adjusted their charge distribution at the interface and revealed how the anisotropy in molecular polarizability impacted the orientation of molecular ions. Our results illustrate the importance of explicitly including the electronic polarization effects in modeling interfacial properties.

Control over Structure and Properties in Nanocrystal Aerogels at the Nano-, Micro-, and Macroscale

The assembly of individual colloidal nanocrystals into macroscopic solvogels and aerogels introduced a new exciting type of material into the class of porous architectures. In these so-called nanocrystal gels, the structure and properties can be controlled and fine-tuned to the smallest details. Recently it was shown that by employing nanocrystal building blocks for such gel materials, the interesting nanoscopic properties can be conserved or even expanded to properties that are available neither in the nanocrystals nor in their respective bulk materials. In general, the production of these materials features the wet-chemical synthesis of stable nanocrystal colloids followed by their carefully controlled destabilization to facilitate arrangement of the nanocrystals into highly porous, interconnected networks. By isolation of the synthesis of the discrete building blocks from the assembly process, the electronic structure, optical properties, and structural morphology can be tailored by the myriad of procedures developed in colloidal nanocrystal chemistry. Furthermore, knowledge and control over the structure–property correlation in the resulting gel structures opens up numerous new ways for extended and advanced applications. Consequently, the amount of different materials converted to nanocrystal-based gel structures is rising steadily. Meanwhile the number of methods for assembly initiation is likewise increasing, offering control over the overall network structure and porosity as well as the individual nanocrystal building block connection. The resulting networks can be dried by different methods to obtain highly porous air-filled networks (aerogels) or applied in their wet form (solvogels). By now a number of different applications profiting from the unique advantages of nanocrystal-based gel materials have been realized and exploited in the areas of photocatalysis, electrocatalysis, and sensing.

In this Account, we aim to summarize the efforts undertaken in the structuring of nanocrystal-based network materials on different scales, fine-tuning of the individual building blocks on the nanoscale, the network connections on the microscale, and the macroscale structure and shape of the final construct. It is exemplarily demonstrated how cation exchange reactions (at the nanoscale), postgelation modifications on the nanocrystal networks (microscale), and the structuring of the gels via printing techniques (macroscale) endow the resulting nanocrystal gel networks with novel physicochemical, mechanical, and electrocatalytic properties. The methods applied in the more traditional sol–gel chemistry targeting micro- and macroscale structuring are also reviewed, showing their future potential promoting the field of nanocrystal-based aerogels and their applications.

Synthesis of a Crystalline and Transparent Aerogel Composed of Ni-Al Layered Double Hydroxide Nanoparticles through Crystallization from Amorphous Hydrogel

Enormous efforts have been devoted to the development of crystalline aerogels toward heterogeneous catalysis, energy storage, ion/molecular absorption, and luminescence. However, properties of aerogels are not fully exploited due to their low content of functional moieties embedded in their solid networks, low crystallinity, and limited chemical compositions. Herein, we develop a one-pot approach based on crystallization from amorphous metal hydroxides modified with a β-diketone ligand, toward crystalline transition-metal hydroxide aerogels. Synthesis of monolithic and crystalline aerogels of layered double hydroxide (LDH) was performed in a Ni-Al system starting from aqueous ethanol solutions of NiCl₂·6H₂O and AlCl₃·6H₂O with acetylacetone (acac) as an organic ligand. Propylene oxide (PO) as an alkalization reagent was added into precursory solutions to yield monolithic wet gels. The successive pH increase induces the formation of a three-dimensional (3-D) solid framework composed of amorphous Al(OH)₃. Then, amphoteric Al(OH)₃ undergoes crystallization into Ni-Al LDH via an acetylacetone-driven dissolution-crystallization of metal hydroxides without destroying the preformed 3-D solid framework. The process allows us to obtain crystalline aerogel monoliths with high porosity and high transparency after supercritical CO₂ drying of wet gels. The present scheme can be expected to synthesize functionalized aerogel composed of crystalline transition-metal oxide/hydroxide nanobuilding blocks (NBBs).

Dynamic Surface Tension of Surfactants in the Presence of High Salt Concentrations

We study the influence of high NaCl concentrations on the equilibrium and dynamic surface tensions of ionic (CTAB) and nonionic (Tween 80) surfactant solutions. Equilibrium surface tension measurements show that NaCl significantly reduces the critical micellar concentration (CMC) of CTAB but has no effect on the CMC of Tween 80. Dynamic surface tension measurements allow comparing the surface tension as a function of time for pure surfactant solutions and in the presence of NaCl. For the ionic surfactant, the dynamics agree with the usual diffusion-limited interfacial adsorption kinetics; however, the kinetics become orders of magnitude slower when NaCl is present. Sum-frequency generation spectroscopy experiments and the equilibrium adsorption measurements show that the presence of NaCl in CTAB solution leads to the formation of ion pairs at the surface, thereby neutralizing the charge of the head group of CTAB. This change, however, is not able to account for the slowing down of adsorption dynamics; we find that it is rather the decreases in the monomer concentration (CMC) in the presence of salt which has the major influence. For the nonionic surfactant, the kinetics of interfacial tension is seen to be already very slow, and the addition of salt does not influence it further. This also correlates very well to the very low CMC of Tween 80.
