Pulsar glitches: observations and physical interpretation

The interpretation of pulsar rotational glitches, the sudden increase in spin frequency of neutron stars, is a half-century-old challenge. The common view is that glitches are driven by the dynamics of the stellar interior, and connect in particular to the interactions between a large-scale neutron superfluid and the other stellar components. This thesis is corroborated by observational data of glitches and the post-glitch response seen in pulsars' rotation, which often involves very long timescales, from months to years. As such, glitch observables combined with consistent models incorporating the rich physics of neutron stars-from the lattice structure of their crust to the equation of state for matter beyond nuclear densities-can be very powerful at placing limits on, and reduce uncertainties of, the internal properties. This review summarises glitch observations, current data, and recent analyses, and connects them to the underlying mechanisms and microphysical parameters in the context of the most advanced theoretical glitch models to date.

On the VHE Spectrum and Formation of the Teraelectronvolt Pulsed Emission of the Crab Pulsar

In the present paper, a model for the pulsed γ-ray emission of the Crab pulsar from 0.01 GeV to 1 TeV in the context of synchrotron emission generated in the vicinity of a light cylinder is developed. The generation of such high energies through the synchrotron process requires the existence of very energetic plasma particles in pulsar magnetospheres. It is assumed that the emitting particles are ultra-relativistic primary beam electrons re-accelerated to very high energies due to the Landau damping process of a special type of parametrically driven Langmuir waves. This type of Langmuir wave carries energy released through the rotational slow-down of a pulsar and is very effective in supplying the resonant particles with energy from a natural reservoir. The model provides simultaneous generation of energetic γ-ray and low-frequency radio (0.1–1 GHz) emission in the same location of the pulsar magnetosphere. These two radiations processes are triggered by a single plasma process, namely excitation of the cyclotron instability. This provides a natural explanation for the observed coincidence of radio and γ-ray signals observed from the Crab pulsar.

The Crab Pulsar and Nebula as Seen in Gamma-Rays

Slightly more than 30 years ago, Whipple detection of the Crab Nebula was the start of Very High Energy gamma-ray astronomy. Since then, gamma-ray observations of this source have continued to provide new surprises and challenges to theories, with the detection of fast variability, pulsed emission up to unexpectedly high energy, and the very recent detection of photons with energy exceeding 1 PeV. In this article, we review the impact of gamma-ray observations on our understanding of this extraordinary accelerator.

Probing Quantum Gravity with Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes

High energy photons from astrophysical sources are unique probes for some predictions of candidate theories of Quantum Gravity (QG). In particular, Imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescope (IACTs) are instruments optimised for astronomical observations in the energy range spanning from a few tens of GeV to ∼100 TeV, which makes them excellent instruments to search for effects of QG. In this article, we will review QG effects which can be tested with IACTs, most notably the Lorentz invariance violation (LIV) and its consequences. It is often represented and modelled with photon dispersion relation modified by introducing energy-dependent terms. We will describe the analysis methods employed in the different studies, allowing for careful discussion and comparison of the results obtained with IACTs for more than two decades. Loosely following historical development of the field, we will observe how the analysis methods were refined and improved over time, and analyse why some studies were more sensitive than others. Finally, we will discuss the future of the field, presenting ideas for improving the analysis sensitivity and directions in which the research could develop.

Peta-electron volt gamma-ray emission from the Crab Nebula

The Crab Nebula is a bright source of gamma rays powered by the Crab Pulsar's rotational energy through the formation and termination of a relativistic electron-positron wind. We report the detection of gamma rays from this source with energies from 5 × 10^-4 to 1.1 peta-electron volts with a spectrum showing gradual steepening over three energy decades. The ultrahigh-energy photons imply the presence of a peta-electron volt electron accelerator (a pevatron) in the nebula, with an acceleration rate exceeding 15% of the theoretical limit. We constrain the pevatron's size between 0.025 and 0.1 parsecs and the magnetic field to ≈110 microgauss. The production rate of peta-electron volt electrons, 2.5 × 10³⁶ ergs per second, constitutes 0.5% of the pulsar spin-down luminosity, although we cannot exclude a contribution of peta-electron volt protons to the production of the highest-energy gamma rays.

Observational diversity of magnetized neutron stars

Young and rotation-powered neutron stars (NSs) are commonly observed as rapidly-spinning pulsars. They dissipate their rotational energy by emitting pulsar wind with electromagnetic radiation and spin down at a steady rate, according to the simple steadily-rotating magnetic dipole model. In reality, however, multiwavelength observations of radiation from the NS surface and magnetosphere have revealed that the evolution and properties of NSs are highly diverse, often dubbed as 'NS zoo'. In particular, many of young and highly magnetized NSs show a high degree of activities, such as sporadic electromagnetic outbursts and irregular changes in pulse arrival times. Importantly, their magnetic field, which are the strongest in the universe, makes them ideal laboratories for fundamental physics. A class of highly-magnetized isolated NSs is empirically divided into several subclasses. In a broad classification, they are, in the order of the magnetic field strength (B) from the highest, 'magnetars' (historically recognized as soft gamma-ray repeaters and/or anomalous x-ray pulsars), 'high-B pulsars', and (nearby) x-ray isolated NSs. This article presents an introductory review for non-astrophysicists about the observational properties of highly-magnetized NSs, and their implications. The observed dynamic nature of NSs must be interpreted in conjunction with transient magnetic activities triggered during magnetic-energy dissipation process. In particular, we focus on how the five fundamental quantities of NSs, i.e. mass, radius, spin period, surface temperature, and magnetic fields, as observed with modern instruments, change with evolution of, and vary depending on the class of, the NSs. They are the foundation for a future unified theory of NSs.

Multi-TeV Emission From the Vela Pulsar

Pulsed emission from the Vela pulsar at energies above 3 TeV has recently been detected by the H.E.S.S. II air-Cherenkov telescope. We present a model for the broad-band spectrum of Vela from infra-red (IR) to beyond 10 TeV. Recent simulations of the global pulsar magnetosphere have shown that most of the particle acceleration occurs in the equatorial current sheet outside the light cylinder and that the magnetic field structure is nearly force-free for younger pulsars. We adopt this picture to compute the radiation from both electron-positron pairs produced in polar cap cascades and from primary particles accelerated in the separatrix and current sheet. The synchrotron spectrum from pairs resonantly absorbing radio photons at relatively low altitude can account for the observed IR-optical emission. We set the parallel electric field in the current sheet to produce the Fermi GeV emission through curvature radiation, producing particles with energies of 30-60 TeV. These particles then produce Very-High-Energy emission up to around 30 TeV through inverse-Compton scattering of the IR-Optical emission. We present model spectra and light curves that can match the IR-Optical, GeV and make predictions for the multi-TeV emission.

The effect of an offset polar cap dipolar magnetic field on the modeling of the Vela pulsar's γ-ray light curves

We performed geometric pulsar light curve modeling using static, retarded vacuum, and offset polar cap (PC) dipole B-fields (the latter is characterized by a parameter ε), in conjunction with standard two-pole caustic (TPC) and outer gap (OG) emission geometries. The offset-PC dipole B-field mimics deviations from the static dipole (which corresponds to ε = 0). In addition to constant-emissivity geometric models, we also considered a slot gap (SG) E-field associated with the offset-PC dipole B-field and found that its inclusion leads to qualitatively different light curves. Solving the particle transport equation shows that the particle energy only becomes large enough to yield significant curvature radiation at large altitudes above the stellar surface, given this relatively low E-field. Therefore, particles do not always attain the radiation-reaction limit. Our overall optimal light curve fit is for the retarded vacuum dipole field and OG model, at an inclination angle [Formula: see text] and observer angle [Formula: see text]. For this B-field, the TPC model is statistically disfavored compared to the OG model. For the static dipole field, neither model is significantly preferred. We found that smaller values of ε are favored for the offset-PC dipole field when assuming constant emissivity, and larger ε values favored for variable emissivity, but not significantly so. When multiplying the SG E-field by a factor of 100, we found improved light curve fits, with α and ζ being closer to best fits from independent studies, as well as curvature radiation reaction at lower altitudes.

The surprising Crab pulsar and its nebula: a review

The Crab nebula and its pulsar (referred to together as 'the Crab') have historically played a central role in astrophysics. True to this legacy, several unique discoveries have been made recently. The Crab was found to emit gamma-ray pulsations up to energies of 400 GeV, beyond what was previously expected from pulsars. Strong gamma-ray flares, of durations of a few days, were discovered from within the nebula, while the source was previously expected to be stable in flux on these time scales. Here we review these intriguing and suggestive developments. In this context we give an overview of the observational properties of the Crab and our current understanding of pulsars and their nebulae.
