Long-lasting, deep effect of Saturn's giant storms

Planetary-scale giant storms erupt on Saturn quasiperiodically. There have been at least six recorded occurrences of past eruptions, and the most recent one was in 2010, with its whole life span captured by the Cassini mission. In 2015, we used the Very Large Array to probe the deep response of Saturn's troposphere to the giant storms. In addition to the remnant effect of the storm in 2010, we have found long-lasting signatures of all mid-latitude giant storms, a mixture of equatorial storms up to hundreds of years old, and potentially an unreported older storm at 70°N. We derive an ammonia anomaly map that shows an extended meridional migration of the storm's aftermath and vertical transport of ammonia vapor by storm dynamics. Intriguingly, the last storm in 2010 splits into two distinct components that propagate in opposite meridional directions, leaving a gap at 43°N planetographic latitude.

Analysis of terraforming on mars using nuclear power for the beginning of space colonization

As a historic challenge for humans, Martian colonization has been initiated by nuclear energy. A moving nuclear power plant could be imaginable known as a nuclear reactor rover. The design of the nuclear reactor rover has been performed where the important matter is how to make the caterpillar move the reactor and its facilities. Hence the slider length and contact point are proposed. The normalized heat transfer is analyzed by slide length and contact point where they are normalized as 1.0 and 10.0, respectively. Although the slider length of the caterpillar is proportional to heat transfer, the contact point shows the adverse values. Longer slider length and less contact point could be the optimized heat production system by the caterpillar which is the additional heat source except the other nuclear reactor. Any other planet could be considered as a potential human colony using the nuclear terraforming technology.

The underexplored frontier of ice giant dynamos

The Voyager 2 flybys of Uranus and Neptune revealed the first multipolar planetary magnetic fields and highlighted how much we have yet to learn about ice giant planets. In this review, we summarize observations of Uranus' and Neptune's magnetic fields and place them in the context of other planetary dynamos. The ingredients for dynamo action in general, and for the ice giants in particular, are discussed, as are the factors thought to control magnetic field strength and morphology. These ideas are then applied to Uranus and Neptune, where we show that no models are yet able to fully explain their observed magnetic fields. We then propose future directions for missions, modelling, experiments and theory necessary to answer outstanding questions about the dynamos of ice giant planets, both within our solar system and beyond. Saturn's near-equatorial ionospheric conductivities from in situ measurements

Cassini's Grand Finale orbits provided for the first time in-situ measurements of Saturn's topside ionosphere. We present the Pedersen and Hall conductivities of the top near-equatorial dayside ionosphere, derived from the in-situ measurements by the Cassini Radio and Wave Plasma Science Langmuir Probe, the Ion and Neutral Mass Spectrometer and the fluxgate magnetometer. The Pedersen and Hall conductivities are constrained to at least 10^-5-10^-4 S/m at (or close to) the ionospheric peak, a factor 10-100 higher than estimated previously. We show that this is due to the presence of dusty plasma in the near-equatorial ionosphere. We also show the conductive ionospheric region to be extensive, with thickness of 300-800 km. Furthermore, our results suggest a temporal variation (decrease) of the plasma densities, mean ion masses and consequently the conductivities from orbit 288 to 292.

Cassini-Huygens' exploration of the Saturn system: 13 years of discovery

The Cassini-Huygens mission to Saturn provided a close-up study of the gas giant planet, as well as its rings, moons, and magnetosphere. The Cassini spacecraft arrived at Saturn in 2004, dropped the Huygens probe to study the atmosphere and surface of Saturn's planet-sized moon Titan, and orbited Saturn for the next 13 years. In 2017, when it was running low on fuel, Cassini was intentionally vaporized in Saturn's atmosphere to protect the ocean moons, Enceladus and Titan, where it had discovered habitats potentially suitable for life. Mission findings include Enceladus' south polar geysers, the source of Saturn's E ring; Titan's methane cycle, including rain that creates hydrocarbon lakes; dynamic rings containing ice, silicates, and organics; and Saturn's differential rotation. This Review discusses highlights of Cassini's investigations, including the mission's final year.

Geomagnetic polar minima do not arise from steady meridional circulation

Observations of the Earth's magnetic field have revealed locally pronounced field minima near each pole at the core-mantle boundary (CMB). The existence of the polar magnetic minima has long been attributed to the supposed large-scale overturning circulation of molten metal in the outer core: Fluid upwells within the inner core tangent cylinder toward the poles and then diverges toward lower latitudes when it reaches the CMB, where Coriolis effects sweep the fluid into anticyclonic vortical flows. The diverging near-surface meridional circulation is believed to advectively draw magnetic flux away from the poles, resulting in the low intensity or even reversed polar magnetic fields. However, the interconnections between polar magnetic minima and meridional circulations have not to date been ascertained quantitatively. Here, we quantify the magnetic effects of steady, axisymmetric meridional circulation via numerically solving the axisymmetric magnetohydrodynamic equations for Earth's outer core under the magnetostrophic approximation. Extrapolated to core conditions, our results show that the change in polar magnetic field resulting from steady, large-scale meridional circulations in Earth's outer core is less than [Formula: see text] of the background field, significantly smaller than the [Formula: see text] polar magnetic minima observed at the CMB. This suggests that the geomagnetic polar minima cannot be produced solely by axisymmetric, steady meridional circulations and must depend upon additional tangent cylinder dynamics, likely including nonaxisymmetric, time-varying processes.
