Interplay between the heat shock response and translation in Escherichia coli

It is widely accepted that the heat shock response is critical for quality control of mature proteins. This function is carried out mainly by chaperones and proteases. Recently, a new group of conserved heat shock proteins essential for growth at high temperature has been characterized. These proteins are involved in regulating and maintaining efficient translation under heat shock.

Linkage map of Escherichia coli K-12, edition 10: the traditional map

This map is an update of the edition 9 map by Berlyn et al. (M. K. B. Berlyn, K. B. Low, and K. E. Rudd, p. 1715-1902, in F. C. Neidhardt et al., ed., Escherichia coli and Salmonella: cellular and molecular biology, 2nd ed., vol. 2, 1996). It uses coordinates established by the completed sequence, expressed as 100 minutes for the entire circular map, and adds new genes discovered and established since 1996 and eliminates those shown to correspond to other known genes. The latter are included as synonyms. An alphabetical list of genes showing map location, synonyms, the protein or RNA product of the gene, phenotypes of mutants, and reference citations is provided. In addition to genes known to correspond to gene sequences, other genes, often older, that are described by phenotype and older mapping techniques and that have not been correlated with sequences are included.

An Escherichia coli gene divergently transcribed from a promoter overlapping the metA promoter

The upstream region of the metA gene in Escherichia coli contains two promoters. We have identified by lacZ fusion an additional promoter in this region, and showed that it is transcribed in the opposite orientation from the metA gene. The putative translation product corresponds to a peptide of 147 amino acids-ORF19 by molecular mass. This peptide is probably not essential for growth, as an insertion mutant is viable.

Physical mapping of the scattered methionine genes on the Escherichia coli chromosome

Methionine is an important amino acid which acts not only as a substrate for protein elongation but also as the initiator of protein synthesis. The genes of the met regulon, which consists of 10 biosynthetic genes (metA, metB, metC, metE, metF, metH, metK, metL, metQ, and metX), two regulatory genes (metJ and metR), and the methionyl tRNA synthetase gene (metG), are scattered throughout the chromosome. The only linked genes are metK and metX at 63.6 min, metE and metR at 86.3 min, and the metJBLF gene cluster at 89 min. metBL form the only met operon.
