Normative Standards for Isokinetic and Anthropometric Classifications of University-Level Netball Players

CONTEXT

The purpose of the study was to develop normative ranges and standards for knee and shoulder isokinetic and anthropometric values. These standards can be qualitatively interpreted and allow practitioners to classify isokinetic and anthropometric values more objectively for university-level netball players.

DESIGN

Posttest only observational study design. All players were only evaluated once during the in-season to generate normative ranges.

METHODS

A total of 51 female players volunteered. Participants were evaluated on an isokinetic dynamometer at 60° per second to obtain knee-extensor and knee-flexor values as well as shoulder-flexor and shoulder-extensor values. A total of 16 anthropometric variables were collected including stature, body mass, 8 skinfolds, and 6 circumferences. Between-group differences were calculated to determine whether playing level was a differentiating factor in data.

RESULTS

Normative standards were developed for isokinetic parameters associated with the knee and shoulder joints as well as skinfolds and circumference measures. No statistically significant between-group differences were evident (χ2Kruskal-Wallis[2] = 3.96, P = .140).

CONCLUSION

These standards can be used by coaches and practitioners to set attainable goals for individual players or those from secondary leagues, classify individual and team-based performances, and facilitate decision-making processes.

Effect of Indian clubbell exercises on cricket fast bowlers' shoulder kinematics

Background

The glenohumeral joint's rotational range of motion (ROM) and muscle strength are essential to execute the cricket bowling action. Performing shoulder rotation exercises may increase the rotator cuff muscle strength and rotational ROM.

Objectives

The aim of this study was to test the effect of a six-week exercise programme on shoulder rotational ROM and muscle strength.

Methods

Twenty-one healthy male cricket fast bowlers were recruited, ranked and pair-matched on initial shoulder rotator muscle strength and assigned to either a shoulder exercise (SE) group or cricket training (CT) only group. The SE group incorporated Indian clubbell exercises in addition to their cricket training.

Results

Bowlers in both groups displayed a large increase on the dominant shoulder's internal rotation (IR) ROM, but only the SE group's bowlers displayed ROM improvements (p<0.001) bilaterally for both internal and external rotation. The CT group's fast bowler's non-dominant shoulder IR ROM significantly decreased (p=0.02) during the six weeks. Between groups, only the SE group's bowler's internal rotator muscle strength improved (p<0.001) bilaterally. The observed kinematic changes were statistically significantly greater at a 5% level for the SE group's bowlers (bilateral internal rotators muscle strength, non-dominant shoulder IR ROM and horizontal adduction ROM).

Conclusion

Maintenance of the shoulder's rotational ROM and muscle strength is vital for a fast bowler. Cricket bowlers who perform regular clubbell exercises might increase their shoulder's ROM and internal rotator cuffs' muscle strength, which may aid in stabilising their glenohumeral joint while bowling.

Beyond the Boundary: A Bibliometric Analysis of the Published Research on Injuries in Cricket

Background

Cricket, a sport immensely popular in the Indian subcontinent and Commonwealth countries, boasts a staggering global following of over 1 billion enthusiasts. However, injuries in cricket are prevalent, resulting in detrimental effects on player performance and leading to substantial absenteeism from the game. In recent times, there has been a surge in interest on the epidemiology, biomechanics, and prevention of cricket-related injuries. To gain comprehensive insights into the existing research landscape, we present a bibliometric analysis of the published research on cricket injuries.

Materials

The Web of Science database was searched using a well-defined search strategy. Original research articles looking at any aspect of injuries in cricket were included. Search results were imported into the R Bibliometrix package for analysis. Analysis of bibliometric parameters included top authors, journals, countries and keywords. Co-occurrence networks were generated and thematic mapping was performed to identify emerging research topics.

Observations

423 publications from 126 journals were included. An increasing trend in publications was noted. JW Orchard was the highest published author; Australia was the highest published country and the Journal of Science and Sport in Medicine had the highest number of publications. Fast bowlers were the most extensively researched and the major research was noted to focus on three niche areas, i.e., epidemiology, consensus definitions and spinal issues in fast bowlers. Research on batsmen, wicketkeepers and fielders was relatively sparse. Furthermore, we observed limited representation of research from the Indian subcontinent, despite cricket's immense popularity in the region.

Conclusions

Our study findings highlight that majority of the cricket injury research stems from developed countries. The primary research areas include epidemiology, injury prevention, and biomechanics, with a particular focus on fast bowlers. However, much more has to be done to encourage research publications, focused on batsmen, wicketkeeper and fielders, as well as cricket in the developing world. These insights are essential for researchers seeking to delve into cricket-related studies and organizations aiming to advance injury prevention research in cricket.

Is MRI screening for bone marrow oedema useful in predicting lumbar bone stress injuries in adult male professional cricketers? A New Zealand pilot study

OBJECTIVES

The aims were to (1) prospectively observe the incidence of bone marrow oedema in asymptomatic adult male domestic professional cricketers during a season and evaluate its relationship to the development of lumbar bone stress injury and (2) further understand the practicalities of implementing a Magnetic Resonance Imaging-based screening program to prevent lumbar bone stress injury in New Zealand cricket.

DESIGN

Prospective observational cohort.

METHODS

Adult male pace bowlers received 6-weekly pre-planned Magnetic Resonance Imaging scans over a single season to determine the presence and intensity of bone marrow oedema in the posterior vertebral arches of the lumbar spine. The participants bowling volume and back pain levels were monitored prospectively.

RESULTS

22 participants (mean age 25.3 years (range 20-32 years)) completed all 4 scans. Ten participants had a prior history of lumbar bone stress injury. Ten participants (45 %, 95 % confidence interval 24-68 %) had bone marrow oedema evident on at least one scan, with 9 (41 %) participants recording a bone marrow oedema intensity ≥ 2 and 5 (23 %) participants demonstrated an intensity ≥ 3. During the study one participant was diagnosed with a lumbar bone stress reaction. No participants developed a lumbar bone stress fracture.

CONCLUSIONS

Due to the lower incidence of lumbar bone stress injuries in adult bowlers coupled with uncertainty over appropriate threshold values for bone marrow oedema intensity, implementation of a resource intense screening program aimed at identifying adult domestic cricketers at risk of developing a lumbar bone stress injury is not currently supported.
