Lower-body work capacity and one-repetition maximum squat prediction in college football players

The purpose of this study was to assess lower-body muscular strength and work capacity after off-season resistance training and the efficacy of predicting maximal squat strength (1 repetition maximum [1RM]) from repetitions to fatigue. National Collegiate Athletic Association Division-II football players (n = 58) were divided into low-strength (LS, 1RM < 365 lb, n = 32) and high-strength (HS, 1RM ≥ 365 lb, n = 26) groups before training based on median 1RM squat performance. Maximal repetitions to failure (RTFs) were performed with a relative load of 70% of 1RM before training and 60, 70, 80, and 90% of 1RM after 12 weeks of a linear periodization resistance training program. As a team, 1RM squat (32 ± 27 lb), 70% RTF (4.5 ± 4.5 reps), and work capacity at 70% 1RM load (1,482 ± 1,181 lb reps) increased significantly after training. Likewise, training resulted in significant increases in 1RM, RTF at 70% 1RM, and work capacity (load × reps) in both LS (8 ± 33 lb, 3.9 ± 4.7 reps, 1,736 ± 1,521 lb reps, respectively) and HS (27 ± 21 lb, 4.9 ± 4.4 reps, 2,387 ± 1,767 lb reps, respectively), with no significant difference between groups. There was no relationship between the change in work capacity and the change in muscular strength for either the LS (r = 0.02) or HS (r = 0.06) group. Predicted 1RMs were best when RTFs were performed using 80% 1RM (5-17 RTFs), with an error of ±5% in 95% of the subjects. In conclusion, the changes in muscular strength associated with an off-season training program appear to have a positive influence on squat work capacity at 70% of 1RM and allow favorable prediction of 1RM using submaximal loads.

Effects of training on muscle and tendon in knee extensors and plantar flexors in vivo

The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of resistance training on muscle and tendon properties between knee extensors and plantar flexors in vivo. Twenty healthy young men voluntarily participated in this study. The subjects were randomly divided into two training groups: knee extension group (n=10) and plantar flexion group (n=10). They performed five sets of exercises with a 1-min rest between sets, which consisted of unilateral knee extension for the knee extension group and plantar flexion for the plantar flexion group at 80% of 1 repetition maximum with 10 repetitions per set (4 days/wk, 12 wk). Before and after training, muscle strength, neural activation level (by interpolated twitch), muscle volume (by magnetic resonance imaging), and tendon stiffness (by ultrasonography) were measured. There were no differences in the training-induced increases in muscle strength, activation level, muscle volume, and tendon stiffness between knee extensors and plantar flexors. These results suggested that if the used protocol of training (i.e., intensity, repetition, etc.) were the same, there were no differences in the training-induced changes in muscle and tendon properties between knee extensors and plantar flexors.

Upper-body work capacity and 1RM prediction are unaltered by increasing muscular strength in college football players

The purpose of this study was to assess changes in upper-body muscular strength and work capacity following off-season resistance training and the resultant effect on prediction of muscular strength (1 repetition maximum, or 1RM). National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II football players (n = 58) were divided into low-strength (LS, 1RM <275 lb, n = 23) and high-strength (HS, 1RM > or =275 lb, n = 35) groups based on initial 1RM bench press. Maximal repetitions to failure (RTF) were performed with a relative (60, 70, 80, and 90% of 1RM) and absolute load (185 lb for players with 1RM <275 lb; 225 lb for players with 1RM > or =275 lb) at pre- and post-training. Following training (n = 58), there was a significant increase in 1RM bench press (22.8 +/- 12.0 lb) and body mass (3.7 +/- 10 lb). There was no change in the number of repetitions performed (RTF) during relative load testing following training. However, RTF during absolute load testing was increased. Relative and absolute load work capacity (reps x load) increased with training, but there was no relationship between the change in work capacity and the changes in muscular strength. Predicted 1RMs were better at lower repetitions (3-5 RM, >85% 1RM) than at higher repetitions (>6RM, < or =80% 1RM) at both pre-and post-training. In conclusion, changes in muscular strength associated with the off-season training program used herein appear to have little effect on work capacity or prediction of 1RM using submaximal loads. For repetition predictions to accurately track changes following resistance training, the test load must be relatively high (>85% 1RM) and the repetitions low (< or =5 reps).

Age and regional specificity of peak limb vascular conductance in women

The influence of age on limb vasodilator capacity in women is unclear. The objectives of this study were to characterize and compare age-associated changes in forearm and calf peak vascular conductance (VC(peak); a functional index of arterial structure) in women and to identify physiological characteristics predictive of variation in limb-specific VC(peak). Peak conductance (plethysmographic flow/mean arterial pressure), VC(peak) of the forearm (forearm VC(peak)), and calf (calf VC(peak)) after 10 min of arterial occlusion were measured in 58 healthy, normally active women aged 21-79 yr. Aerobic capacity (cycle peak oxygen uptake), arterial health (pulse-wave velocity, ankle-brachial index), total cholesterol, limb-specific tissue composition (dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry), and isometric strength (handgrip, plantar flexion) were also assessed. The relative decline in calf VC(peak) with age (-6.8% per decade, P < 0.001) was greater than the forearm (-4.4% per decade, P = 0.004), in contrast to results previously reported for men (forearm decline > calf decline). Limb VC(peak) per kilogram muscle declined with age in the calf (-6.0% per decade; P = 0.002), but not the forearm (P = 0.12). Age, cholesterol, and regional tissue composition were significant predictors of peak conductance in both limbs; however, age was a stronger predictor of peak conductance in the calf. These results suggest that healthy aging is associated with a linear decline in limb vasodilator capacity in women, but the magnitude of this effect is region specific. Further research will be required to determine whether the decline in lower extremity vasodilator capacity with age explains diminished exercising leg vasodilation in older women.

Reproducibility of blood flow and post-occlusive reactive hyperaemia as measured by venous occlusion plethysmography

Venous occlusion plethysmography is commonly used as a tool to assess BF (blood flow) and VR (vascular resistance) at baseline and during PORH (post-occlusive reactive hyperaemia). However, little is known about the reproducibility of this method. The purpose of the present study was to investigate short- (hours) and medium (week)-term reproducibility of forearm, calf and thigh BF and VR at baseline and during PORH. Reproducibility was assessed by the CV (coefficient of variation). In eight subjects, baseline BF and VR of the forearm, calf and thigh were measured using venous occlusion plethysmography (50 mmHg). PORH and minimal VR were measured after 13 min of arterial occlusion (220 mmHg). Reproducibility of baseline forearm and calf BF was acceptable and in agreement with previous studies (CV, 12.9–21.2%). Short- and medium-term reproducibility of thigh BF was good (CV, 5.9% and 8.7% respectively). Baseline VR showed acceptable-to-good reproducibility for forearm, calf and thigh (8.3–22.5%). Forearm PORH showed a CV of 6.1% (short term) and 8.6% (medium term); this was 6.1% (short term) and 6.4% (medium term) for the calf and 6.4% (short term) and 8.0% (medium term) for the thigh. Minimal VR showed good-to-acceptable reproducibility (CV, 6.1–11.7%). In conclusion, forearm, calf and thigh BF and PORH measured by plethysmography have an acceptable-to-good short- and medium-term reproducibility. Short- and medium-term reproducibility of forearm and calf baseline BF are acceptable and thigh baseline BF has a good short- and medium-term reproducibility. Therefore plethysmography is a suitable low-cost tool to assess thigh baseline BF and PORH.

Metabolic and vascular support for the role of myoglobin in humans: a multiparametric NMR study

In human muscle the role of myoglobin (Mb) and its relationship to factors such as muscle perfusion and metabolic capacity are not well understood. We utilized nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) to simultaneously study the Mb concentration ([Mb]), perfusion, and metabolic characteristics in calf muscles of athletes trained long term for either sprint or endurance running after plantar flexion exercise and cuff ischemia. The acquisitions for 1H assessment of Mb desaturation and concentration, arterial spin labeling measurement of muscle perfusion, and 31P spectroscopy to monitor high-energy phosphate metabolites were interleaved in a 4-T magnet. The endurance-trained runners had a significantly elevated [Mb] (0.28 ± 0.06 vs. 0.20 ± 0.03 mmol/kg). The time constant of creatine rephosphorylation (τPCr), an indicator of oxidative capacity, was both shorter in the endurance-trained group (34 ± 6 vs. 64 ± 20 s) and negatively correlated with [Mb] across all subjects ( r = 0.58). The time to reach maximal perfusion after cuff release was also both shorter in the endurance-trained group (306 ± 74 vs. 560 ± 240 s) and negatively correlated with [Mb] ( r = 0.56). Finally, Mb reoxygenation rate tended to be higher in the endurance-trained group and was positively correlated with τPCr ( r = 0.75). In summary, these NMR data reveal that [Mb] is increased in human muscle with a high oxidative capacity and a highly responsive vasculature, and the rate at which Mb resaturates is well correlated with the rephosphorylation rate of Cr, each of which support a teleological role for Mb in O2 transport within highly oxidative human skeletal muscle.

Dissociation of peak vascular conductance and V(O2) max among highly trained athletes

Previously, a strong relationship has been found between whole body maximal aerobic power (VO(2 max)) and peak vascular conductance in the calf muscle (J. L. Reading, J. M. Goodman, M. J. Plyley, J. S. Floras, P. P. Liu, P. R. McLaughlin, and R. J. Shephard. J. Appl. Physiol. 74: 567-573, 1993; P. G. Snell, W. H. Martin, J. C. Buckley, and C. G. Blomqvist. J. Appl. Physiol. 62: 606-610, 1987), suggesting a matching between maximal exercise capacity and peripheral vasodilatory reserve across a broad range of aerobic power. In contrast, long-term training could alter this relationship because of the unique demands for muscle blood flow and cardiac output imposed by different types of training. In particular, the high local blood flows but relatively low cardiac output demand imposed by the type of resistance training used by bodybuilders may cause a relatively greater development in peripheral vascular reserve than in aerobic power. To examine this possibility, we studied the relationship between treadmill VO(2 max) and vascular conductance in the calf by using strain-gauge plethysmography after maximal ischemic plantar flexion exercise in 8 healthy sedentary subjects (HS) and 28 athletes. The athletes were further divided into three groups: 10 elite middle-distance runners (ER), 11 power athletes (PA), and 7 bodybuilders (BB). We found that both BB and ER deviate from the previously demonstrated relationship between VO(2 max) and vascular conductance. Specifically, for a given vascular conductance, BB had a lower VO(2 max), whereas ER had a higher VO(2 max) than did HS and PA. We conclude that the relationship between peak vascular conductance and aerobic power is altered in BB and ER because of training-specific effects on central vs. peripheral cardiovascular adaptation to local skeletal muscle metabolic demand.
