Abstract
In this study, we assessed the electrical and optical behavior of semiconductor hybrid films fabricated from octaethyl-21H,23H-porphine copper (CuP), embedded in polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA), and polystyrene (PS). The hybrid films were characterized structurally and morphologically using infrared spectroscopy (IR), atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Subsequently, the PMMA:CuP and PS:CuP hybrid films were evaluated optically by UV-vis spectroscopy, as well as electrically, with the four-point collinear method. Hybrid films present a homogeneous and low roughness morphology. In addition, the PS matrix allows the crystallization of the porphin, while PMMA promotes the amorphous structure in CuP. The polymeric matrix also affects the optical behavior of the films, since the smallest optical gap (2.16 eV) and onset gap (1.89 eV), and the highest transparency are obtained in the film with a PMMA matrix. Finally, the electrical behavior in hybrid films is also affected by the matrix: the largest amount of current carried is approximately 0.01 A for the PS:CuP film, and 0.0015 A for the PMMA:CuP film. Thanks to the above properties, hybrid films are promising candidates for use in optoelectronic devices.

Abstract
Corroles are synthetic porphyrin analogs that contain one meso carbon atom lesser and bear a trianionic N4 metal-chelating core. They require in-depth preparative chemistry, demonstrate unique coordination chemistry and have impressive and diverse physical properties, and these are commonly compared to their respective porphyrins. The corrole's macrocyclic system is inherently electron rich and chelates metal ions in a more compact, less symmetric tetranitrogen cavity compared to that of porphyrins. Herein, we cover the highlights of the corrole research through the decades by first reviewing, in a chronological sense, multi-step syntheses; some routes have since been discontinued. This is followed by describing post-functionalization of already formed corroles via reactions performed on either the macrocycle's periphery or the inner nitrogen atoms or on the existing substituents. We do also mention milestones in literature reviewing, publication of encyclopedias, and the creation of professional organizations and conferences (ICPP) which make up the corrole/porphyrin research landscape. Also highlighted are still existing challenges and future perspectives.

Abstract
Ferric heme b (= ferric protoporphyrin IX = hemin) is an important prosthetic group of different types of enzymes, including the intensively investigated and widely applied horseradish peroxidase (HRP). In HRP, hemin is present in monomeric form in a hydrophobic pocket containing among other amino acid side chains the two imidazoyl groups of His170 and His42. Both amino acids are important for the peroxidase activity of HRP as an axial ligand of hemin (proximal His170) and as an acid/base catalyst (distal His42). A key feature of the peroxidase mechanism of HRP is the initial formation of compound I under heterolytic cleavage of added hydrogen peroxide as a terminal oxidant. Investigations of free hemin dispersed in aqueous solution showed that different types of hemin dimers can form, depending on the experimental conditions, possibly resulting in hemin crystallization. Although it has been recognized already in the 1970s that hemin aggregation can be prevented in aqueous solution by using micelle-forming amphiphiles, it remains a challenge to prepare hemin-containing micellar and vesicular systems with peroxidase-like activities. Such systems are of interest as cheap HRP-mimicking catalysts for analytical and synthetic applications. Some of the key concepts on which research in this fascinating and interdisciplinary field is based are summarized, along with major accomplishments and possible directions for further improvement. A systematic analysis of the physico-chemical properties of hemin in aqueous micellar solutions and vesicular dispersions must be combined with a reliable evaluation of its catalytic activity. Future studies should show how well the molecular complexity around hemin in HRP can be mimicked by using micelles or vesicles. Because of the importance of heme b in virtually all biological systems and the fact that porphyrins and hemes can be obtained under potentially prebiotic conditions, ideas exist about the possible role of heme-containing micellar and vesicular systems in prebiotic times.

Abstract
The use of composite films with semiconductor behavior is an alternative to enhance the efficiency of optoelectronic devices. Composite films of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) and metalloporphines (MPs; M = Co, Cu, Pd) have been prepared by spin-coating. The PEDOT:PSS-MP films were treated with isopropanol (IPA) vapor to modify the polymer structure from benzoid to quinoid. The quinoid structure promotes improvements in the optical and electrical behavior of films. The composite films’ morphology and structure were characterized using infrared and Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Composite films were analyzed for their optical behavior by ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy: at λ < 450 nm, the films become transparent, indicating the capacity to be used as transparent electrodes in optoelectronic devices. At λ ≥ 450 nm, the absorbance in the films increased significantly. The CoP showed an 8 times larger current density compared to the CuP. A light induced change in the J-V curves was observed, and it is larger for the CoP. The conductivity values yielded between 1.23 × 102 and 1.92 × 103 Scm−1 and were higher in forward bias.

Abstract
Corroles, macrocycles that owe their name to the cobalt-chelating prosthetic group of vitamin B12 and share numerous features with the iron-chelating porphyrin present in heme proteins/enzymes, constantly cross new boundaries ever since stable derivatives became easily accessible. Particularly important is the increasing utilization of corroles and the corresponding metal complexes for the benefit of mankind, in terms of new drug candidates for treating various diseases and as catalysts for sustainable energy relevant processes. One challenge is to gain access to the plain macrocycle, as to allow for full elucidation of the most fundamental properties of corroles. We have obtained the substituent-free corrole by several surprising and conceptually different pathways. Selected features of the corresponding metal complexes are illuminated, for pointing towards unique phenomena that are anticipated to largely expand the horizon regarding their utilization for contemporary catalysis.

Abstract
The synthesis of the low-molecular weight, meso-tetra(dioxan-2-yl)porphyrin with considerable solubility in aqueous solution is described. The key intermediate dioxan-2-carbaldehyde is accessible in either racemic or in stereo-pure forms from commercially available starting materials in three steps. Using 4 × 1 or 2 + 2-type syntheses provide the porphyrin in modest yields. While the racemic aldehyde created an intractable mixture of diastereomers, the enantiopure aldehyde created a single enantiomer of the target porphyrin. The porphyrin was spectroscopically characterized. As its free base or zinc complex, it showed excellent solubility properties in organic and aqueous solvents, though free water-solubility was not achieved. The work expands on the availability of chiral porphyrins and neutral porphyrins with considerable solubility in aqueous solution.

Abstract
Porphyrins feature prominently in nature, be it as enzymatic cofactors, electron and exciton shuffles, as photoactive dyes, or as signaling substances. Their involvement in the generation, storage and use of oxygen is pivotal to life, while their photochemical properties are central to the biochemical functioning of plants. When complexed to metals, porphyrins can engage in a multitude of contemporary applications ranging from solar energy generation to serving as catalysts for important chemical reactions. They are also able to function as useful theranostic agents, and as novel materials for a wide range of applications. As such, they are widely considered to be highly valuable molecules, and it almost goes without saying that synthetic organic chemistry has dramatically underpinned all the key advances made, by providing reliable access to them. In fact, strategies for the synthesis of functionalized porphyrins have now reached a state of refinement where pretty well any desired porphyrin can successfully be synthesized with the approaches that are available, including a cornucopia of related macrocycle-modified porphyrinoids. In this review, we are going to illustrate the development of this exciting field by discussing a number of classic syntheses of porphyrins. Our coverage will encompass the natural protoporphyrins and chlorophylls, while also covering general strategies for the synthesis of unsymmetrical porphyrins and chlorins. Various industrial syntheses of porphyrins will also be discussed, as will other routes of great practical importance, and avenues to key porphyrinoids with modified macrocycles. A range of selected examples of contemporary functionalization reactions will be highlighted. The various key syntheses will be described and analyzed from a traditional mechanistic organic chemistry perspective to help student readers, and those who are new to this area. The aim will be to allow readers to mechanistically appreciate and understand how many of these fascinating ring-systems are built and further functionalized.

Abstract
The nucleophilic substitution of aromatic moieties (SNAr) has been known for over 150 years and found wide use for the functionalization of (hetero)aromatic systems. Currently, several "types" of SNAr reactions have been established and notably the area of porphyrinoid macrocycles has seen many uses thereof. Herein, we detail the SNAr reactions of seven types of porphyrinoids with differing number and type of pyrrole units: subporphyrins, norcorroles, corroles, porphyrins, azuliporphyrins, N-confused porphyrins, and phthalocyanines. For each we analyze the substitution dependent upon: a) the type of nucleophile and b) the site of substitution (α, β, or meso). Along with this we evaluate this route as a synthetic strategy for the generation of unsymmetrical porphyrinoids. Distinct trends can be identified for each type of porphyrinoid discussed, regardless of nucleophile. The use of nucleophilic substitution on porphyrinoids is found to often be a cost-effective procedure with the ability to yield complex substituent patterns, which can be conducted in non-anhydrous solvents with easily accessible simple porphyrinoids.

Abstract
Six zinc(II) porphyrins bearing 0-4 meso-phenyl substituents have been examined spectroscopically and theoretically. Comparisons with previously examined free base analogues afford a deep understanding of the electronic and photophysical effects of systematic addition of phenyl groups in porphyrins containing a central zinc(II) ion versus two hydrogen atoms. Trends in the wavelengths and relative intensities of the absorption bands are generally consistent with predictions from time-dependent density functional theory calculations and simulations from Gouterman's four-orbital model. These trends derive from a preferential effect of the meso-phenyl groups to raise the energy of the highest occupied molecular orbital. The calculations reveal additional insights, such as a progressive increase in oscillator strength in the violet-red (B-Q) absorption manifold with increasing number of phenyls. Progressive addition of 0-4 phenyl substituents to the zinc porphyrins in O2-free toluene engenders a reduction in the measured lifetime of the lowest singlet excited state (2.5-2.1 ns), an increase in the S1 → S0 fluorescence yield (0.022-0.030), a decrease in the yield of S1 → T1 intersystem crossing (0.93-0.88), and an increase in the yield of S1 → S0 internal conversion (0.048-0.090). The derived rate constants for S1 decay reveal significant differences in the photophysical properties of the zinc chelates versus free base forms. The unexpected finding of a larger rate constant for internal conversion for zinc chelates versus free bases is particularly exemplary. Collectively, the findings afford fundamental insights into the photophysical properties and electronic structure of meso-phenylporphyrins, which are widely used as benchmarks for tetrapyrrole-based architectures in solar energy and life sciences research.

Abstract
We have prepared a new [Formula: see text]-oxo iron(III) porphyrin complex based on the simplest possible porphyrin ligand, porphine. Our structure determination for {[Fe(porphine)]2O}shows that it has a decidedly different molecular structure compared to all other [Formula: see text]-oxo iron(III)porphyrin complexes with two independent porphyrin ligands. The Fe–O–Fe angle is 153.21 (16)[Formula: see text]which leads to a small interplanar angle of 22.7[Formula: see text]between the two porphine rings. This also leads to C[Formula: see text]C nonbonded contact as short as 3.35Å between the two rings. The twist angle of the two porphine rings is 16.8[Formula: see text]. Other structural features are in general accord with those expected for high-spin iron(III) porphyrinates.

Abstract
The PVP and its derivatives have been broadly applied in polymers, organic
syntheses, and catalysis processes. The crosslinked PVP is a well-known polymer support
for numerous reagents and catalysts. Cross-linked PVPs are commercially available polymers
and have attracted much attention over the past due to their interesting properties
such as the facile functionalization, high accessibility of functional groups, being nonhygroscopic,
easy to prepare, easy filtration, and swelling in many organic solvents. A
brief explanation of the reported applications of PVPs in different fields followed by the
discussion on the implementation of methodologies for catalytic efficiency of PVP-based
reagents in the organic synthesis is included. The aim is to summarize the literature under
a few catalytic categories and to present each as a short scheme involving reaction conditions.
In the text, discussions on the synthesis and the structural determination of some typical polymeric reagents
are presented, and the mechanisms of some organic reactions are given. Where appropriate, advantages
of reagents in comparison with the previous reports are presented. This review does not include patent literature.

Abstract
The cationic porphyrin meso-tetra(4-[Formula: see text]-methylpyridyl)porphine (TMPyP) has a high yield of singlet oxygen generation upon light activation and a strong affinity for DNA. These advantageous properties have turned it into a promising photosensitizer for use in photodynamic therapy (PDT). In this review, we have summarized the current state-of-the-art applications of TMPyP for the treatment of cancer as well as its implementation in antimicrobial PDT. The most relevant studies reporting its pharmacokinetics, subcellular localization, mechanism of action, tissue biodistribution and dosimetry are discussed. Combination strategies using TMPyP-PDT together with other photosensitizers and chemotherapeutic agents to achieve synergistic anti-tumor effects and reduce resistance to therapy are also explored. Finally, we have addressed emerging applications of this porphyrin, including nanoparticle-mediated delivery, controlled drug release, biosensing and G-quadruplex stabilization for tumor growth inhibition. Altogether, this work highlights the great potential and versatility that TMPyP can offer in different fields of biomedicine such us cancer treatment or antimicrobial therapy.

Abstract
A luminescent conjugated macrocycle polymer (CMP) with strong two-photon fluorescence property, namely, P[5]-TPE-CMP, is constructed from ditriflate-functionalized pillar[5]arene and a 1,1,2,2-tetrakis(4-ethynylphenyl)ethylene (TPE) linker through a Sonogashira-Hagihara cross-coupling reaction. Significantly, in sharp contrast with the corresponding conjugated microporous polymer without synthetic macrocycles, P[5]-TPE-CMP shows an outstanding stability against photobleaching and exhibits highly selective cation sensing capability toward Fe3+ at different excitation wavelengths (both UV and red-near-infrared regions). Meanwhile, its fluorescence could also be sufficiently quenched by 4-amino azobenzene, a frequently used organic dye that is certified to be carcinogenic, as compared with a group of common organic compounds. This work paves a new way for enhancing the properties of porous organic polymers through the introduction of supramolecular macrocycles like macrocyclic arenes.

Abstract
Triad hybrid multilayers containing the light sensitizers of zinc tetrapyridylporphyrin (ZnTPyP) and pyridine-functionalized TiO(2) (TiO(2)-Py) nanoparticles were constructed on substrate surfaces with the use of Pd(II) ions as the connectors using the layer-by-layer (LBL) method. The assembly process was monitored using ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) absorption and X-ray photoelectron spectra as well as scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. The content of the pyridine substituents in the TiO(2)-Py nanocomposites was about 2% (w/w). The Soret absorption band of ZnTPyP was 24 nm red-shifted in the hybrid multilayers due to a strong intermolecular electronic coupling interaction among porphyrin macrocycles or porphyrin macrocycle/TiO(2)-Py nanoparticles. The average surface density of each ZnTPyP layer was about 1.4 × 10(-10) mol/cm(2). Aggregation of the small TiO(2)-Py nanoparticles to larger domains with sizes up to hundreds of nanometers occurred in the hybrid multilayers; however, such an aggregation behavior was weaker than that in the solutions. The quartz substrate modified with the as-prepared Pd/ZnTPyP/Pd/TiO(2)-Py triad hybrid multilayers was used as a heterogeneous photocatalyst for the degradation of methyl orange (MO) under irradiation (λ > 420 nm) at room temperature with a catalytic efficiency of about 1.3 × 10(-3) MO/ZnTPyP·s. Without the use of the filter, the catalytic efficiency increased because both ZnTPyP and TiO(2)-Py nanocomposites acted as the light sensitizers. It is suggested that the present heterogeneous catalyst has the advantages of facile separation, high stability, structural controllability on the molecular and nanoscale level, and good recyclability.

Abstract
Multilayers of manganese(III) porphyrin-linked poly(vinylpyridinium) (MnTMPyP-PVPMe) polyelectrolyte and poly(styrenesulfonic acid-o-maleic) acid (PSS) have been assembled on gold, quartz, and indium tin oxide surfaces by a layer-by-layer (LBL) technique. The assembly process was monitored by measuring their absorption spectra and frequency change after each assembly, both of which confirmed the formation of three-dimensional MnTMPyP-PVPMe/PSS multilayers. The Soret absorption band of porphyrin red shifted about 8 nm in the multilayer compared with that in the dilute aqueous solution. The average mass changes for each assembly of MnTMPyP-PVPMe and PSS were estimated to be about 2.9 and 0.25 μg/cm(2), respectively. X-ray photoelectron spectra revealed that the as-prepared multilayers were composed of S 2p, C 1s, N 1s, O 1s, and Mn 2p, corresponding to polymers of MnTMPyP-PVPMe and PSS. A rough surface was observed after the assembly of MnTMPyP-PVPMe on the gold surface, but it became smoother when the PSS layer was adsorbed. The significant difference in the mass change and film morphology after the assembly of MnTMPyP-PVPMe compared to those after the assembly of PSS was ascribed to the reason that the MnTMPyP-PVPMe polyelectrolyte contained large metalloporphyrin macrocycles, which were axially coordinated to the pyridyl substituents of the PVP polymeric backbones. The cyclic voltammograms revealed two couples of redox waves in the phosphate electrolyte solution at pH 11, which corresponded to the electron-transfer processes of Mn(II)/Mn(III) and Mn(III)/Mn(IV) of polymeric manganese porphyrin MnTMPyP-PVPMe. The charge-transfer process was also investigated. Finally, the present MnTMPyP-PVPMe/PSS multilayers were used as a heterogeneous catalyst for the decoloration of an azo dye.

Abstract
The direct coupling of complex, functional organic molecules at a surface is one of the outstanding challenges in the road map to future molecular devices. Equally demanding is to meet this challenge without recourse to additional functionalization of the molecular building blocks and via clean surface reactions that leave no surface contamination. Here, we demonstrate the directional coupling of unfunctionalized porphyrin molecules--large aromatic multifunctional building blocks--on a single crystal copper surface, which generates highly oriented one-dimensional organometallic macromolecular nanostructures (wires) in a reaction which generates gaseous hydrogen as the only byproduct. In situ scanning tunneling microscopy and temperature programmed desorption, supported by theoretical modeling, reveal that the process is driven by C-H bond scission and the incorporation of copper atoms in between the organic components to form a very stable organocopper oligomer comprising organometallic edge-to-edge porphyrin-Cu-porphyrin connections on the surface that are unprecedented in solution chemistry. The hydrogen generated during the reaction leaves the surface and, therefore, produces no surface contamination. A remarkable feature of the wires is their stability at high temperatures (up to 670 K) and their preference for 1D growth along a prescribed crystallographic direction of the surface. The on-surface formation of directional organometallic wires that link highly functional porphyrin cores via direct C-Cu-C bonds in a single-step synthesis is a new development in surface-based molecular systems and provides a versatile approach to create functional organic nanostructures at surfaces.
