Seeing in crowds: Averaging first, then max

Crowding, a fundamental limit in object recognition, is believed to result from excessive integration of nearby items in peripheral vision. To understand its pooling mechanisms, we measured subjects' internal response distributions in an orientation crowding task. Contrary to the prediction of an averaging model, we observed a pattern suggesting that the perceptual judgement is made based on choosing the largest response across the noise-perturbed items. A model featuring first-stage averaging and second-stage signed-max operation predicts the diverse errors made by human observers under various signal strength levels. These findings suggest that different rules operate to resolve the bottleneck at early and high-level stages of visual processing, implementing a combination of linear and nonlinear pooling strategies.

Investigating the crowding effect on letters and symbols in deaf adults

Reading requires the transformation of a complex array of visual features into sounds and meaning. For deaf signers who experience changes in visual attention and have little or no access to the sounds of the language they read, understanding the visual constraints underlying reading is crucial. This study aims to explore a fundamental aspect of visual perception intertwined with reading: the crowding effect. This effect manifests as the struggle to distinguish a target letter when surrounded by flanker letters. Through a two-alternative forced choice task, we assessed the recognition of letters and symbols presented in isolation or flanked by two or four characters, positioned either to the left or right of fixation. Our findings reveal that while deaf individuals exhibit higher accuracy in processing letters compared to symbols, their performance falls short of that of their hearing counterparts. Interestingly, despite their proficiency with letters, deaf individuals didn't demonstrate quicker letter identification, particularly in the most challenging scenario where letters were flanked by four characters. These outcomes imply the development of a specialized letter processing system among deaf individuals, albeit one that may subtly diverge from that of their hearing counterparts.

Customizing spatial remapping of letters to aid reading in the presence of a simulated central field loss

Reading is a primary concern of patients with central field loss (CFL) because it is typically performed with foveal vision. Spatial remapping offers one potential avenue to aid in reading; it entails shifting occluded letters to retinal areas where vision is functional. Here, we introduce a method of creating and testing different remapping strategies-ways to remap text-customized for CFL of different shapes. By simulating CFL in typically-sighted individuals, we tested the customization hypothesis-that the benefits of different remapping strategies will depend on the properties of the CFL. That is, remapping strategies will aid reading differentially in the presence of differently shaped CFL. In Experiment 1, letter recognition in the presence of differently shaped CFL was assessed in and around central vision. Using these letter recognition "maps" different spatial remappings were created and tested in Experiment 2 using a word recognition task. Results showed that the horizontal gap remapping, which did not remap any letters vertically, resulted in the best word recognition. Results were also consistent with the customization hypothesis; the benefits of different remappings on word recognition depended on the different CFL shapes. Although the horizontal gap remapping resulted in very good word recognition, tailoring remapping strategies to the shape of patients' CFL may aid reading with the wide range of sizes and shapes encountered by patients with CFL.

Enhancing the Functional Performance of Patients with Late-Stage Age-Related Macular Degeneration Implanted with a Miniature Telescope using Rehabilitation Training

INTRODUCTION

In this work, our aim is to report the functional outcomes of cataract surgery with smaller-incision new-generation miniature telescope (SING IMT) implantation followed by rehabilitation training in patients with central visual loss due to late-stage age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

METHODS

This retrospective study included patients who were monocularly implanted with SING IMT and then followed a rehabilitation program based on 6 biweekly sessions focused on visual abilities, reading, writing, visual motor integration and mobility. A total of 11 participants were included in this study. Reading acuity (RA), reading speed (RS), and fixation stability (FS) were assessed biweekly at 6-, 8-, 10-, 12-, 14-, and 16-week follow-up visits after SING IMT implantation and at a final assessment at 24 weeks. Best-corrected distance visual acuity (BCDVA) was also measured at baseline and at the same postoperative timepoints.

RESULTS

Mean baseline BCDVA was 12.5 ± 8.6 letter score. Both RA and RS were found to be significantly improved from the first rehabilitation session (6 weeks after surgery) to the last session (24 weeks after surgery). At the end of the rehabilitation program, mean RA was 0.45 ± 0.19 LogMAR and mean RS was 30.9 ± 17.6 words per minute. Moreover, all patients achieved a FS of 15 s or more after the last rehabilitation session. Most patients (55%) achieved an improvement of 15 letters in BCDVA at the end of the study.

CONCLUSIONS

This study suggests that rehabilitation training can improve visual functions of patients with late-stage AMD implanted with SING IMT in real-world tasks such as reading skills.

Abnormal basic visual processing functions in binocular fusion disorders

Heterophoria is a common type of binocular fusion disorder that consists of a latent eye misalignment with potential consequences on daily activities such as reading or working on a computer (with CVS). Crowding, a type of contextual modulation, can also impair reading. Our recent studies found an abnormal pattern of low-level visual processing with larger perceptive fields (PF) in heterophoria. The PF is the fundamental processing unit of human vision and both masking and crowding depend on its size. We investigated how heterophoria would impact the PF's size via a lateral masking experiment and consequently affect the foveal crowding at different letter-spacings (the crowding zone). More specifically, we explored the relationship between crowding, lateral masking, the PF's size, and the amount of heterophoria. The binocular horizontal PF's size was larger with heterophoric subjects, in agreement with our previous study. We found a stronger crowding and an extended crowding zone associated with slower response times; this shows that the processing of letter identification under both crowded and uncrowded conditions requires more processing effort in heterophoric individuals. In agreement with previous studies, we found a correlation between the crowding zone and the PF's size; each was strongly correlated with the amount of phoria. These findings resemble those involving the PF size and the extended crowding found at the fovea in amblyopia and young children. We suggest that these findings could help explain the inter-observers' variability found in the masking literature, and the reading difficulties often encountered in subjects with high heterophoria.

Consistency of preferred retinal locus across tasks and participants trained with a simulated scotoma

After loss of central vision following retinal pathologies such as macular degeneration (MD), patients often adopt compensatory strategies including developing a "preferred retinal locus" (PRL) to replace the fovea in tasks involving fixation. A key question is whether patients develop multi-purpose PRLs or whether their oculomotor strategies adapt to the demands of the task. While most MD patients develop a PRL, clinical evidence suggests that patients may develop multiple PRLs and switch between them according to the task at hand. To understand this, we examined a model of central vision loss in normally seeing individuals and tested whether they used the same or different PRLs across tasks after training. Nineteen participants trained for 10 sessions on contrast detection while in conditions of gaze-contingent, simulated central vision loss. Before and after training, peripheral looking strategies were evaluated during tasks measuring visual acuity, reading abilities and visual search. To quantify strategies in these disparate, naturalistic tasks, we measured and compared the amount of task-relevant information at each of 8 equally spaced, peripheral locations, while participants performed the tasks. Results showed that some participants used consistent viewing strategies across tasks whereas other participants' strategies differed depending on task. This novel method allows quantification of peripheral vision use even in relatively ecological tasks. These results represent one of the first examinations of peripheral viewing strategies across tasks in simulated vision loss. Results suggest that individual differences in peripheral looking strategies following simulated central vision loss may model those developed in pathological vision loss.

Closed letter counters impair recognition

An often-repeated piece of advice when choosing fonts for great legibility is to use fonts with large counters and apertures. To identify effects of open and closed apertures on the letters 'a', 'c', 'e', 'r', 's', 't' and 'f', we ran an experiment using the serif font Pyke as stimulus. The letters in focus were designed for this experiment with three variations of open apertures (Open, Medium and Closed). The experimental paradigm was to present a letter either with or without flankers in the parafovea at 2° eccentricity. The findings showed that participants had more trouble identifying the letter if it was set in a font variation with closed apertures.

Spatial and temporal proximity of objects for maximal crowding

Crowding refers to the deleterious visual interaction among nearby objects. Does maximal crowding occur when objects are closest to one another in space and time? We examined how crowding depends on the spatial and temporal proximity, retinally and perceptually, between a target and flankers. Our target was a briefly flashed T-stimulus presented at 10° right of fixation (3-o'clock position). It appeared at different target-onset-to-flanker asynchronies with respect to the instant when a pair of flanking Ts, revolving around the fixation target, reached the 3-o'clock position. Observers judged the orientation of the target-T (the crowding task), or its position relative to the revolving flankers (the flash-lag task). Performance was also measured in the absence of flanker motion: target and flankers were either presented simultaneously (closest retinal temporal proximity) with different angular spatial offsets, or were presented collinearly (closest retinal spatial proximity) with different temporal onset asynchronies. We found that neither retinal nor perceptual spatial or temporal proximity could account for when maximal crowding occurred. Simulations using a model based on feed-forward interactions between sustained and transient channels in static and motion pathways, taking into account the differential response latencies, can explain the crowding functions observed under various spatio-temporal conditions between the target and flankers.

Attentional limits in visual search with and without dorsal parietal dysfunction: space-based window or object-based span?

Attentional resource and distribution are specifically impaired in simultanagnosia, and also in the visuo-attentional form of developmental dyslexia. Both clinical conditions are conceived as a limitation of simultaneous visual processing after superior parietal lobule (SPL) dysfunction (review in Valdois et al., 2019). However, a reduced space-based attentional window (i.e. a limited visual eccentricity at which the target object can be identified, Khan et al. 2016) has been demonstrated in simultanagnosia versus a reduced object-based span (i.e. a limited number of objects processed at each fixation, Bosse et al., 2007) in developmental dyslexia. In healthy individuals, the cost in reaction times per item in serial search tasks suggests that a group of objects is processed simultaneously at a time, but this group is also undefined and depends on the visual complexity of the task. Healthy individuals and a patient with simultanagnosia performed serial search tasks involving either symbols (made of separable features) or objects made of non-separable features, and with distractors that were either all identical or all dissimilar. We used a moving window paradigm to determine whether the task was performed with a "working space" versus a "working span" limitation in control group and in patient with bilateral SPL damage. We found that healthy individuals performed search in a color task comprising non-separable feature objects and dissimilar distractors with a limited space-based attentional window; this attentional window, as well as the mean saccade amplitude used to displace it across the visual display, were independent of set size, thus inconsistent with an object-based attentional span. In the symbol task comprising a feature-absent search in which all feature-present distractors were dissimilar, we observed that mean saccade amplitude decreased with set size and that search performance could not be mimicked by a moving window of a single diameter; instead participants seemed to process a fixed number of symbols at a time (object-based span). Following bilateral SPL lesions, patient IG demonstrated a similar space-based search process in the color search task with a normal attentional window. In contrast, her cost-per-item in the symbol task increased dramatically, demonstrating a clear deficit of simultaneous object perception. These results confirmed the specific contribution of the SPL to the visual processing of multiple objects made of separable features (like letters), and more dramatically when they are all different, which explains the specific difficulty for a reading beginner in case of SPL dysfunction.

Training to improve temporal processing of letters benefits reading speed for people with central vision loss

Reading is slow and difficult for many people with central vision loss. A previous study showed that the temporal threshold for letter recognition is a major factor limiting reading speed for people with central vision loss. Here, we asked whether the temporal threshold for letter recognition for people with central vision loss could be improved through training and, if so, whether that would benefit reading. Training consisted of six sessions (3000 trials) of recognizing letter trigrams presented at fixation. Trigrams were initially presented at a baseline temporal threshold that was decreased by 0.1 log step when observers' letter recognition accuracies reached 80% or higher for four consecutive blocks. Before and after training, we measured observers' visual acuity, preferred retinal locus for fixation, fixation stability, reading speeds using the rapid serial visual presentation (RSVP) paradigm, the MNREAD Acuity Chart and 100-word passages, the baseline temporal threshold for letter recognition at 80% accuracy, and a visual-span profile. After training, the temporal threshold was decreased by 68%. This improvement was accompanied by a higher RSVP maximum reading speed (but no change in MNREAD and passage reading speeds) and a larger visual span. A mediation analysis showed that the relationship between the temporal threshold and RSVP maximum reading speed was mainly mediated by the information transfer rate (size of visual span/temporal duration). Our results showed that the temporal threshold for letter recognition is amenable to training and can improve RSVP reading speeds, offering a practical means to improve reading speed for people with central vision loss.

Aging Effects on the Visual Span for Alphabetic Stimuli

Background: The visual span (i.e., an estimate of the number of letters that can be recognized reliably on a single glance) is widely considered to impose an important sensory limitation on reading speed. With the present research, we investigated adult age differences in the visual span for alphabetic stimuli (i.e., Latin alphabetic letters), as aging effects on span size may make an important contribution to slower reading speeds in older adulthood. Method: A trigram task, in which sets of three letters were displayed randomly at specified locations to the right and left of a central fixation point, was used to estimate the size of the visual span for young (18-30 years) and older (65+years) adults while an eye tracker was used to ensure accurate central fixation during stimulus presentation. Participants also completed tests of visual acuity and visual crowding. Results: There were clear age differences in the size of the visual span. The older adults produced visual spans which were on average 1.2 letters smaller than the spans of young adults. However, both young and older adults produced spans smaller than those previously reported. In addition, span size correlated with measures of both visual acuity and measures of visual crowding. Conclusion: The findings show that the size of the visual span is smaller for older compared to young adults. The age-related reduction in span size is relatively small but may make a significant contribution to reduced parafoveal processing during natural reading so may play a role in the greater difficulty experienced by older adult readers. Moreover, these results highlight the importance of carefully controlling fixation location in visual span experiments.

Aging and Pattern Complexity Effects on the Visual Span: Evidence from Chinese Character Recognition

Research suggests that pattern complexity (number of strokes) limits the visual span for Chinese characters, and that this may have important consequences for reading. With the present research, we investigated age differences in the visual span for Chinese characters by presenting trigrams of low, medium or high complexity at various locations relative to a central point to young (18–30 years) and older (60+ years) adults. A sentence reading task was used to assess their reading speed. The results showed that span size was smaller for high complexity stimuli compared to low and medium complexity stimuli for both age groups, replicating previous findings with young adult participants. Our results additionally showed that this influence of pattern complexity was greater for the older than younger adults, such that while there was little age difference in span size for low and medium complexity stimuli, span size for high complexity stimuli was almost halved in size for the older compared to the young adults. Finally, our results showed that span size correlated with sentence reading speed, confirming previous findings taken as evidence that the visual span imposes perceptual limits on reading speed. We discuss these findings in relation to age-related difficulty reading Chinese.

Korean reading speed: Effects of print size and retinal eccentricity

Evaluating the effects of print size and retinal eccentricity on reading speed is important for identifying the constraints faced by people with central-field loss. Previous work on English reading showed that 1) reading speed increases with print size until a critical print size (CPS) is reached, and then remains constant at a maximum reading speed (MRS), and 2) as eccentricity increases, MRS decreases and CPS increases. Here we extend this work to Korean, a language with more complex orthography. We recruited 6 Korean native speakers (mean age = 22) and measured their reading speed in central vision (0°) and peripheral vision (10° in the lower field). 900 Korean sentences (average 8.25 words) were created with frequently-occurring beginner-level words, presented using a rapid serial visual presentation (RSVP) paradigm. Data for English reading were obtained from Chung, Mansfield & Legge, Vision Research, 1998, for comparison. MRS was similar for Korean and English at 0° (713 vs. 787 wpm), but decreased faster with eccentricity for Korean. CPS was larger for Korean than for English regardless of eccentricity, but increased with eccentricity similarly for both languages. From 0 to 10°, MRS decreased by a factor of 6.5 for Korean and 2.8 for English, and CPS increased by a factor of 11.7 for Korean and 10.2 for English. Korean reading speed is more affected by retinal eccentricity than English, likely due to additional within-character crowding from more complex orthography. Korean readers with central-field loss may experience more difficulty than English readers.
