Stable isotopic characterization of nitrate wet deposition in the tropical urban atmosphere of Costa Rica

Increasing energy consumption and food production worldwide results in anthropogenic emissions of reactive nitrogen into the atmosphere. To date, however, little information is available on tropical urban environments where inorganic nitrogen is vastly transported and deposited through precipitation on terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. To fill this gap, we present compositions of water stable isotopes in precipitation and atmospheric nitrate (δ¹⁸O-H₂O, δ²H-H₂O, δ¹⁵N-NO₃^-, and δ¹⁸O-NO₃^-) collected daily between August 2018 and November 2019 in a tropical urban atmosphere of central Costa Rica. Rainfall generation processes (convective and stratiform rainfall fractions) were identified using stable isotopes in precipitation coupled with air mass back trajectory analysis. A Bayesian isotope mixing model using δ¹⁵N-NO₃^- compositions and corrected for potential ¹⁵N fractionation effects revealed the contribution of lightning (25.9 ± 7.1%), biomass burning (21.8 ± 6.6%), gasoline (19.1 ± 6.4%), diesel (18.4 ± 6.0%), and soil biogenic emissions (15.0 ± 2.6%) to nitrate wet deposition. δ¹⁸O-NO₃^- values reflect the oxidation of NO_x sources via the ·OH + RO₂ pathways. These findings provide necessary baseline information about the combination of water and nitrogen stable isotopes with atmospheric chemistry and hydrometeorological techniques to better understand wet deposition processes and to characterize the origin and magnitude of inorganic nitrogen loadings in tropical regions.

Biogenic secondary organic aerosols: A review on formation mechanism, analytical challenges and environmental impacts

The review initiates with current state of information on the atmospheric reaction mechanism of biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs) and its fate in the atmosphere. The plants release BVOCs, i.e., isoprene, monoterpenes, and sesquiterpenes, which form secondary organic aerosols (SOA) upon oxidation. These oxidation reactions are primarily influenced by solar radiations along with other meteorological parameters viz.; temperature and relative humidity, therefore, the chemistry behind SOA formation is different during day than the night time. The review throws light upon the day and nighttime formation mechanism of SOA, recent advancements in the analytical techniques available for the measurements, and its impact on the environment. Studies have revealed that day time SOA formation is dominated by OH and O₃, however, NOx initiated SOA production is dominated during night. The formation mechanism addresses that the gaseous products of VOCs are firstly formed and then partitioned over the pre-existing particles. New particle formation and biomass-derived aerosols are found to be responsible for enhanced SOA formation. 2-Dimensional gas chromatography-mass spectrometer (2D-GC/MS) is observed to be best for the analysis of organic aerosols. Radiative forcing (RF) SOA is observed to be a useful parameter to evaluate the environmental impacts of SOA and reviewed studies have shown mean RF in the ranges of -0.27 to +0.20 W m^-2.

Isomerization and Degradation of Levoglucosan via the Photo-Fenton Process: Insights from Aqueous-Phase Experiments and Atmospheric Particulate Matter

So far, studies on the conversion of stereochemistry under photo-Fenton conditions and their atmospheric implication are still rare. Here, we found that the biomass burning marker, the chiral compound levoglucosan (L), undergoes oxidative degradation under photo-Fenton conditions and can be isomerized into mannosan (M) and galactosan (G) simultaneously. Among the formic acid, acetic acid, and oxalic acid in the degradation products of levoglucosan, it was found that the yield of formation of formic acid in the photo-Fenton pathway can be as high as 86%. It is worth noting that both levoglucosan and its isomers are present in the atmosphere and their concentrations are strongly correlated. At the same time, the range of their concentration ratios, L/(G + M), measured in the photo-Fenton experiments in the laboratory was found to agree well with that measured in atmospheric PM_2.5 samples. However, the sources of L, G, and M in the atmosphere are complex, and the photo-Fenton reaction may be an essential pathway for the distribution of L, G, and M in the atmosphere.

Photooxidation Reactions of Ethyl 2-Methylpropionate (E2MP) and Ethyl 2,2-Dimethylpropionate (E22DMP) Initiated by OH Radicals: An Experimental and Computational Study

The relative rate (RR) technique was used for the measurement of OH-initiated photooxidation reactions of ethyl 2-methylpropionate (E2MP) and ethyl 2,2-dimethylpropionate (E22DMP) in the temperature range of 268-363 K at 760 Torr. In addition to this, the thermodynamic and kinetic parameters for the title reactions were theoretically investigated using CCSD(T)/cc-pVTZ//M06-2X/6-311++G(2d,2p) level of theory in the temperature range of 200-400 K using canonical variational transition state theory (CVT) in combination with small curvature tunneling (SCT) method. The rate coefficients at (298 ± 2) K were measured to be k_E2MP+OH = (2.71 ± 0.79) × 10^-12 cm³ molecule^-1 s^-1 and k_E22DMP+OH = (2.58 ± 0.80) × 10^-12 cm³ molecule^-1 s^-1. The degradation mechanisms for the title reactions were investigated in the presence of O₂ using gas chromatography with mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and gas chromatography with infrared spectroscopy (GC-IR). From the recognized products, the possible product degradation mechanisms were predicted. In addition to this, the atmospheric lifetimes (ALs), lifetime-corrected radiative forcing (RF), global warming potential (GWPs) and photochemical ozone creation potentials (POCPs) were calculated to further understand the environmental impact of these molecules on the Earth's troposphere.
