What Aimed Movement Models Fit Distal Pointing With Varying Depth?

OBJECTIVE

With the rapid improvements in drone technology, there is an increasing interest in distal pointing to diffuse drones. This study investigated the effect of depth on distal pointing when the hand does not traverse the entire distance from start to target so that the most suitable mathematical model can be assessed.

BACKGROUND

Starting from the Fitts paradigm, researchers have proposed different models to predict movement time when the distance to the target is variable. They do consider distance, but they are based on statistical modeling rather than the underlying control mechanisms.

METHODS

Twenty-four participants volunteered for an experiment in a full-factorial Fitts' paradigm task (3 levels of movement amplitude *7 levels of target width *3 levels of distance from participant to screen). Movement time and the number of errors were the dependent variables.

RESULTS

Depth has a significant effect when the target width is small, but depth has no effect when the target width is large. The angular version of the two-part model is superior to the one-part Fitts' model at larger distances. Besides, Index of difficulty for distal pointing, I D DP with adjustable k achieves the best fit even though the model is very sensitive to the value of k and the complexity of the model could be resulting in an overfitting. The result implies that the effects of movement amplitude and target width are not comparable and grouping them to form a dependent index of difficulty can be misleading especially when distance is an added variable.

CONCLUSION

The angular version of the two-part model is a viable and meaningful description for distal pointing. Even though the I D DP with adjustable k is the best predictor for movement time when depth is an added variable, there is no physical interpretation for it.

Performance Evaluation of an Immersive Virtual Reality Application for Rehabilitation after Arthroscopic Rotator Cuff Repair

Few studies have evaluated the effectiveness of shoulder rehabilitation in virtual environments. The objective of this study was to investigate the performance of a custom virtual reality application (VR app) with a stereophotogrammetric system considered the gold standard. A custom VR app was designed considering the recommended rehabilitation exercises following arthroscopic rotator cuff repair. Following the setting of the play space, the user's arm length, and height, five healthy volunteers performed four levels of rehabilitative exercises. Results for the first and second rounds of flexion and abduction displayed low total mean absolute error values and low numbers of unmet conditions. In internal and external rotation, the number of times conditions were not met was slightly higher; this was attributed to a lack of isolated shoulder movement. Data is promising, and volunteers were able to reach goal conditions more often than not. Despite positive results, more literature comparing VR applications with gold-standard clinical parameters is necessary. Nevertheless, results contribute to a body of literature that continues to encourage the application of VR to shoulder rehabilitation programs.

Alterations in Physical Demands During Virtual/Augmented Reality-Based Tasks: A Systematic Review

The digital world has recently experienced a swift rise in worldwide popularity due to Virtual (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) devices. However, concrete evidence about the effects of VR/AR devices on the physical workload imposed on the human body is lacking. We reviewed 27 articles that evaluated the physical impact of VR/AR-based tasks on the users using biomechanical sensing equipment and subjective tools. Findings revealed that movement and muscle demands (neck and shoulder) varied in seven and five studies while using VR, while in four and three studies during AR use, respectively, compared to traditional methods. User discomfort was also found in seven VR and three AR studies. Outcomes indicate that interface and interaction design, precisely target locations (gestures, viewing), design of virtual elements, and device type (location of CG as in Head-Mounted Displays) influence these alterations in neck and shoulder regions. Recommendations based on the review include developing comfortable reach envelopes for gestures, improving wearability, and studying temporal effects of repetitive movements (such as effects on fatigue and stability). Finally, a guideline is provided to assist researchers in conducting effective evaluations. The presented findings from this review could benefit designers/evaluations working towards developing more effective VR/AR products.
