Relationship between marital satisfaction and defeat in IVF-ET: based on actor-partner interdependence model approach

OBJECTIVE

A person's marital satisfaction is a strong predictor of their own mental health outcomes. However, marital satisfaction results from both spouses' experiences, so a partner's marital satisfaction also affects his or her mental health outcomes. This study adopted the actor-partner interdependence model approach (APIM) to evaluate the relationship between marital satisfaction and sense of defeat in vitro fertilization-embryo transfer (IVF-ET) couples.

METHODS AND MEASURES

In this cross-sectional study, 181 infertile couples undergoing IVF-ET treatment were recruited using the Marital Satisfaction Scale of the ENRICH Marital Quality Questionnaire and Defeat Scale. Through APIM and Pearson analysis, the path relationship between marital satisfaction and defeat was analyzed.

RESULTS

The varying degrees of defeat in IVF-ET couples, are closely related to actors' and partners' marital satisfaction. In terms of actor effects, the Marital Satisfaction of both husbands (β = -0.71, p < 0.001) and wives (β = -0.46, p = 0.001) have a significant effect on individual Defeat. With regard to partner effects, husbands' Marital Satisfaction (β = -0.23, p = 0.038) has a significant impact on wives' Defeat and the wives' Marital Satisfaction (β = -0.45, p = -0.005) has a significant impact on husbands' Defeat.

CONCLUSION

IVF-ET couples must be looked at as a whole, and it is critical to include couples and not just men or women when studying infertility. The importance of their interaction is essential to improve the psychosocial adaptation of infertile couples in IVF-ET treatment.

Sexual-related determinants of life satisfaction among married women: A cross-sectional study

BACKGROUND AND AIM

Life satisfaction refers to the perceived satisfaction of individuals concerning various aspects of their lives. The present study investigated the predictive role of sexual-related determinants in life satisfaction among married women.

METHODS

A cross-sectional study was conducted from August to November 2021. A total of 350 married women with at least six months of cohabitation with husbands were included in the study. The study utilized a multi-stage random sampling method from 10 comprehensive health centers in Qazvin, Iran. Scores on the Emotional Intimacy Questionnaire (EIQ), Dyadic Sexual Communication Scale (DSCS), Female Sexual Distress Questionnaire (FSDQ), Female Sexual Quality of Life Scale (FSQLS), Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI), and Life Satisfaction Scale (LSS) were assessed. Data were analyzed using univariable and multivariable linear regression models with a significance level of p < 0.05.

RESULTS

The mean age of participants was 33.77 years (SD = 9.77) and they had been married for an average of 10.21 years (SD = 9.93). The mean scores on the LSS were 20.16 (out of 35; SD = 6.79). Based on the multivariable linear regression model adjusted for socio-demographic characteristics, the two strongest predictors of life satisfaction among Iranian married women were marital intimacy (β = 0.49, p < 0.001) and sexual functioning (β = 0.17, p = 0.009). Together, these variables explained 45% of variance in life satisfaction.

CONCLUSION

Given that marital intimacy and sexual functioning were the most significant sexual-related determinants of life satisfaction among married women, designing and implementing interventions which increase women's marital intimacy and sexual functioning might improve married women's life satisfaction.

Complex factors related to marital and sexual satisfaction among couples undergoing infertility treatment: A cross-sectional study

Objectives

This study assesses complex factors related to marital and sexual satisfaction among couples undergoing infertility treatment.

Methods

This cross-sectional study was conducted with 140 couples who visited fertility centers in Iran, between September 2015 and July 2016. Data collection was done by Marital and Sexual Satisfaction Questionnaires and were analyzed by the IBM SPSS 26 software.

Results

There was a significant difference between wives and husbands in the MSQ total scores (p = 0.027). However, there was no significant difference between wives and husbands in the SSQ total scores (p = 0.398). Sexual satisfaction and decision-maker in life among wives and husbands were significant predictors of MSQ. The kind of treatment, cause of infertility and BMI among wives and kinds of treatment, cause of infertility, and decision-maker among husbands were also significant predictors of SSQ.

Conclusion

The findings of this study showed that there is a difference between the understanding of marital and sexual satisfaction in wives and their husbands. Healthcare providers need to pay more attention to these differences.
