Abstract
OBJECTIVE To develop a scientific consensus on nutrition in cystic fibrosis. METHODS Sixteen coordinators elaborated relevant questions on nutritional therapy in cystic fibrosis, which were divided into six sections: nutritional assessment, nutritional recommendations, nutritional intervention, dietary counseling, special situations and enzyme replacement, and gastrointestinal manifestations. Two to three specialists in the field were responsible for each section and obtaining answers formulated based on standardized bibliographic searches. The available literature was searched in the PubMed®/MEDLINE database, after training and standardization of search strategies, to write the best level of evidence for the questions elaborated. Issues related to disagreement were discussed until a consensus was reached among specialists, based on the current scientific literature. RESULTS Forty-two questions were prepared and objectively answered, resulting in a consensus of nutritional therapy in cystic fibrosis. CONCLUSION This work enabled establishing a scientific consensus for nutritional treatment of cystic fibrosis patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Patients with cystic fibrosis (CF) may be at risk for micronutrient depletion, particularly during periods of illness and infection. The purpose of this study was to investigate serum micronutrient status over time in adults with CF initially hospitalized with a pulmonary exacerbation. MATERIALS AND METHODS This was an ancillary study of a multicenter trial investigating the role of high-dose vitamin D supplementation in 24 adults with CF (mean age, 29.6 ± 7.3 years). We measured serum concentrations of copper (Cu), iron (Fe), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), potassium (K), and sulfur (S) in subjects at the beginning of a pulmonary exacerbation and again at 3 months. RESULTS Serum concentrations of Cu, Fe, and Ca were significantly lower at baseline compared with 3 months following the pulmonary exacerbation (Cu: baseline, 1.5 ± 0.6 vs 3 months, 1.6 ± 0.6 µg/mL, P = .027; Fe: 0.8 ± 0.3 vs 1.3 ± 1.1 µg/mL, P = .026; Ca: 9.7 ± 0.8 vs 10.8 ± 2.0 mg/dL, P = .024). Serum concentrations of K, Mg, and S did not change over time (K: baseline, 4.9 ± 0.3 vs 3 months, 5.1 ± 0.5 mEq/L; Mg: 1.8 ± 0.2 vs 2.0 ± 0.3 mg/dL; S: 1288.6 ± 343 vs 1309.9 ± 290 µg/mL; P > .05 for all). CONCLUSION Serum concentrations of Cu, Fe, and Ca increased significantly several months following recovery from acute pulmonary exacerbation in adults with CF. This may reflect decreased inflammation, improved food intake, and/or increased absorption following recovery.

Abstract
Cystic fibrosis (CF) is an inherited disease affecting the respiratory, gastrointestinal, hepatobiliary, and reproductive systems. Nutrition status in persons with CF is often compromised due to increased energy needs, frequent infections, pancreatic insufficiency, lung disease, or CF-related diabetes. Maintaining good nutrition status has been associated with better pulmonary function, reduced hospitalizations, and increased longevity. Nutrition support as oral supplementation (used in >37% of the CF population) or tube feeding (used in >13% of the CF population) is often required for children and adults with CF. The purpose of this update is to describe current consensus and evidence for enteral nutrition support guidelines, reported complications of enteral feeding in the CF population, evidence of expected outcomes, and to discuss related areas requiring further research. A case report is provided to illustrate potential outcomes of aggressive enteral support.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS Achieving and maintaining an ideal nutritional status is the primary aim of the nutritional management of cystic fibrosis (CF). It is unclear how nutritional interventions impact on patients' perceptions and behaviours concerning body image and eating. This work aimed to provide a psychosocial profile and compare CF patients receiving (a) enteral tube feeding, (b) nutritional supplements, (c) no nutritional interventions, and (d) healthy controls. METHODS A cross-sectional questionnaire design was employed. Age, gender, lung function, and body mass index were recorded. Subjects completed measures of eating attitudes, perceived and desired body shape, body image, self-esteem and quality of life (QoL). RESULTS A minority of CF patients reported disordered eating. Those receiving nutritional interventions engaged in less dieting behaviour. All CF groups, especially intervention groups, received more pressure from others to eat. For females, control groups desired to be slimmer whereas intervention groups desired to be heavier. Healthy males were content with their body whereas CF males wished to be heavier. Patients receiving enteral tube feeding were less satisfied with their body image, reported lower self-esteem and poorer QoL. CONCLUSION Body image and eating behaviours are important considerations of nutritional interventions for maintaining QoL.
