Ovarian Extravascular Papillary Endothelial Hyperplasia (Masson Tumor) Mimicking a Primary Gynecologic Malignancy

Papillary endothelial hyperplasia or Masson tumor most commonly occurs within the extremities and head and neck. It is usually of intravascular type, associated with thrombus formation and organization within a preexisting vessel or vascular malformation, but rarely can be extravascular. We describe the first 2 cases of this extravascular type to occur within the ovary, one of which mimicked malignancy radiologically. This condition is thought to represent a reactive phenomenon with reparative response secondary to thrombosis although with an unclear underlying pathogenesis. The prognosis is generally good, with complete surgical resection usually representing adequate treatment.

Intravascular papillary endothelial hyperplasia of larynx: case report and literature review of all head and neck cases

Intravascular papillary endothelial hyperplasia (IPEH) is a benign lesion of a vascular origin that is caused by excessive proliferation of endothelial cells in blood vessels or vascular malformations. It is a rare entity that can present in any region of the body, but with particular predilection to the head and neck region and the extremities. We also present the results of the English literature search, which to our knowledge are all the published cases of IPEH in the head and neck region (No=213). IPEH has not been reported to arise from the glottic region previously. We present a first case of IPEH arising from the vocal fold of a 48-year-old male. Histological differential diagnosis of IPEH includes several entities, most importantly angiosarcoma. Presentation and histology are discussed. The main treatment option is a complete surgical resection. Prognosis of IPEH is excellent, with the exception of some intracranial cases.

Intravascular Papillary Endothelial Hyperplasia (Masson Lesion) of the Hypopharynx and Larynx

Masson lesion is characterized by a benign intravascular papillary hyperplasia and subsequent thrombosis. Clinically, this lesion can be misdiagnosed as mucocele, hemangioma, Kaposi sarcoma, angiosarcoma, pyogenic granuloma, and several other lesions. In this article, we report a case of intravascular papillary endothelial hyperplasia of the hypopharynx and larynx, which caused dysphagia in an 18-year-old female patient. The lesion was excised entirely via a lateral pharyngotomy approach. We discuss the clinical and histopathologic features, differential diagnosis, and treatment of this uncommon entity.

Extravascular papillary endothelial hyperplasia of the palm masquerading as an angiosarcoma

Cutaneous extravascular papillary endothelial hyperplasia (PEH) is a rare lesion presenting as a cutaneous mass and histologically mimicking angiosarcoma. Herein, we describe a patient who presented with a palm tumor that had developed after trauma. Histologically, the lesion was ulcerated and showed proliferation of atypical epithelioid cells with nuclear enlargement and mitosis. Vascular proliferation was evident, and these were positive for CD31 and CD34, with approximately 20% positivity for MIB-1. We diagnosed this case as an extravascular papillary endothelial hyperplasia because there was no evidence of invasion into the surrounding tissue and elastica staining proved it did not have a vascular structure. To our knowledge, cutaneous extravascular PEH has not yet been reported in the published work.
