Hemp fibers modified with graphite oxide as green and efficient solution for water remediation: Application to methylene blue

In this paper, the use of hemp fibers modified with graphite oxide for the removal of methylene blue (MB) from aqueous solutions was investigated. Parameters such as contact time, pH, temperature, initial concentration of dye and ionic strength were varied and their effects on the adsorption recovery were evaluated. The adsorption process attained the equilibrium within 30 min while the adsorption capacity was found to increase with increasing contact time. The experimental data were fitted through a pseudo-second order model. Maximum adsorption capacity slightly increases with temperature changing from 54 mg/g to 58 mg/g at pH = 7.5, from 37 mg/g to 45 mg/g at pH = 3 and from 44 mg/g to 49 mg/g at pH = 12, by increasing the temperature from 20 °C to 80 °C indicating that the process is slightly endothermic (ΔH = 3.43 kJ/mol). The thermodynamic parameters were even calculated demonstrating that the process is spontaneous (ΔG ≈ -4.4 J/mol K and ΔS = 3.16 J/mol K)). Finally, a mathematical algorithm was applied to forecast the response surface model. A second order model was chosen to fit the experimental data and the statistical effect of the process parameters were estimated. A numerical optimization was even performed to individuate the optimal set of process parameters (pH = 9.25, T = 53.8 °C and C₀ = 13.2 mg/L) which maximizes the removal capacity. A possible adsorption mechanism was even presented. So, it was proved the efficiency of the adsorption of a novel, inexpensive and sustainable composite material obtained from agro-waste resources by performing reusability cycles.

Novel Aminosilane (APTES)-Grafted Polyaniline@Graphene Oxide (PANI-GO) Nanocomposite for Electrochemical Sensor

Lead is a potentially toxic element (PTE) that has several adverse medical effects in humans. Its presence in the environment became prominent due to anthropogenic activities. The current study explores the use of newly developed composite materials (organic-inorganic hybrid) based on PANI-GO-APTES for electrochemical detection of Pb²⁺ in aqueous solution. The composite material (PANI-GO-APTES) was synthesized by chemical method and was characterized with SEM, XPS, XEDS, XRD, TGA, FTIR, EIS and CV. The result of characterization indicates the successful synthesis of the intended material. The PANI-GO-APTES was successfully applied for electrochemical detection of Pb²⁺ using cyclic voltammetry and linear sweep voltammetry method. The limit of detection of Pb²⁺ was 0.0053 µM in the linear range of 0.01 µM to 0.4 µM. The current response produced during the electrochemical reduction of Pb²⁺ catalyzed by PANI-GO-APTES was also very repeatable, reproducible and rapid. The application of PANI-GO-APTES-modified GCE in real sample analysis was also established. Therefore, PANI-GO-APTES is presented as a potential Pb²⁺ sensor for environmental and human health safety.

Enhanced CO2 separation properties by incorporating acid-functionalized graphene oxide into polyimide membrane

Graphene oxide (GO) was modified using isocyanate (MDI) and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) for the fabrication of flat-sheet GO-MDI-EDTA composite. Subsequently, this composite was incorporated into the Matrimid® (PI) matrix to fabricate mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) for CO2 separation. The influence of GO-MDI-EDTA composite on the CO2 separation properties of PI was evaluated. Scanning electron microscopy showed that GO-MDI-EDTA enhanced the interface compatibility with the polymer matrix. MMMs showed significantly enhanced CO2 permeability compared with pure Matrimid® membrane. The improvement of CO2 separation performance can be attributed to the uniform dispersion of GO-MDI-EDTA sheets in the PI matrix. The carboxylic group contained in GO-MDI-EDTA has a good affinity with CO2, and the increased carboxyl sites can effectively transport CO2. The GO-MDI-EDTA lamellar structure increased the gas transmission path, which is not conducive to the passage of large dynamic diameter gases (CH4, N2), thereby improving the separation performance. The MMMs doped with GO-MDI-EDTA-0.5% showed optimal gas separation performance. The CO2 permeability is 12.85 Barrer, the CO2/N2 selectivity is 47.59, and the CO2/CH4 selectivity is 53.54.

Covalent polymer functionalized graphene oxide/poly(ether ether ketone) composites for fused deposition modeling: improved mechanical and tribological performance

This paper presents a novel method using poly(aryl ether ketone) containing pendant carboxyl groups to covalently functionalize graphene oxide. The functionalized graphene oxide (LFG) was used to prepare poly(ether ether ketone) (PEEK) composites through melt blending. It is found that LFG has great interface adhesion to the PEEK matrix, and just a small amount of it can simultaneously improve the strength and toughness of the composites, while unmodified graphene oxide could enhance strength but cause toughness damage. The tensile and impact strength of composite with 0.1 wt% LFG are 5.7% and 20.5% higher than that of neat PEEK, respectively. In addition, 0.5 wt% LFG composite shows great friction and wear performance with friction coefficient and specific wear rate 27.3% and 18.3% lower than that of PEEK. Furthermore, the composites can be used as practical high-performance additive manufacturing materials because LFG is able to improve the mechanical performance of the fused deposition modeling (FDM) composite samples significantly.
