An In Situ Study of Precursor Decomposition via Refractive Index Sensing in p-Type Transparent Copper Chromium Oxide

Oxide semiconductors are penetrating into a wide range of energy, environmental, and electronic applications, possessing a potential to outrun currently employed semiconductors. However, an insufficient development of p-type oxides is a major obstacle against complete oxide electronics. Quite often oxide deposition is performed by the spray pyrolysis method, inexpensive to implement and therefore accessible to a large number of laboratories. Although, the complex growth chemistry and a lack of in situ monitoring during the synthesis process can complicate the growth optimization of multicomponent oxides. Here we present a concept of plasmonic, optical sensing that has been applied to spray pyrolysis oxide film growth monitoring for the first time. The proposed method utilizes a polarization based refractive index sensing platform using Au nanodimers as transducing elements. As a proof of concept, the changes in the refractive index of the grown film were extracted from individual Cu(acac)₂ and Cr(acac)₃ precursors in real time to reveal their thermal decomposition processes. Obtained activation energies give insight into the physical origin of the narrow temperature window for the synthesis of high performing p-type transparent conducting copper chromium oxide Cu _x CrO₂. The versatility of the proposed method makes it effective in the growth rate monitoring of various oxides, exploring new candidate materials and optimizing the synthesis conditions for acquisition of high performing oxides synthesized by a high throughput cost-effective method.

Effects of distancing and pattern of breathing on the filtering capability of commercial and custom-made facial masks: An in-vitro study

Background

Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemics, masking policies have been advocated. While masks are known to prevent transmission towards other individuals, it is unclear if different types of facial masks can protect the user from inhalation. The present study compares in-vitro different commercial and custom-made facial masks at different distances and breathing patterns.

Methods

Masks were placed on a head mannequin connected to a lung simulator, using a collecting filter placed after the mannequin airway. Certified, commercial and custom-made masks were tested at three different distances between the emitter and the mannequin: 40 cm, 80 cm and 120 cm. Two patterns of breathing were used, simulating normal and polypneic respiration. A solution of methylene blue was nebulized with a jet nebulizer and different mask-distance-breathing pattern combinations were tested. The primary endpoint was the inhaled fraction, defined as the amount of methylene blue detected with spectrophotometry expressed as percent of the amount detected in a reference condition of zero distance and no mask.

Findings

We observed a significant effect of distance (p < 0.001), pattern of breathing (p = 0.040) and type of mask (p < 0.001) on inhaled fraction. All masks resulted in lower inhaled fraction compared to breathing without mask (p < 0.001 in all comparisons), ranging from 41.1% ± 0.3% obtained with a cotton mask at 40 cm distance with polypneic pattern to <1% for certified FFP3 and the combination of FFP2 + surgical mask at all distances and both breathing pattern conditions.

Discussion

Distance, type of device and breathing pattern resulted in highly variable inhaled fraction. While the use of all types of masks resulted relevantly less inhalation compared to distancing alone, only high-grade certified devices (FFP3 and the combination of FFP2 + surgical mask) ensured negligible inhaled fraction in all conditions.

Particle-size distribution (PSD) of pulverized hair: A quantitative approach of milling efficiency and its correlation with drug extraction efficiency

Different types of hair were submitted to different milling procedures and their resulting powders were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and laser diffraction (LD). SEM results were qualitative whereas LD results were quantitative and accurately characterized the hair powders through their particle size distribution (PSD). Different types of hair were submitted to an optimized milling conditions and their PSD was quite similar. A good correlation was obtained between PSD results and ketamine concentration in a hair sample analyzed by LC-MS/MS. Hair samples were frozen in liquid nitrogen for 5min and pulverized at 25Hz for 10min, resulting in 61% of particles <104μm and 39% from 104 to 1000μm. Doing so, a 359% increment on ketamine concentration was obtained for an authentic sample extracted after pulverization comparing with the same sample cut in 1mm fragments. When milling time was extended to 25min, >90% of particles were <60μm and an additional increment of 52.4% in ketamine content was obtained. PSD is a key feature on analysis of pulverized hair as it can affect the method recovery and reproducibility. In addition, PSD is an important issue on sample retesting and quality control procedures.
