Electrical brain imaging evidences left auditory cortex involvement in speech and non-speech discrimination based on temporal features

Switching tinnitus on or off: An initial investigation into the role of the pregenual and rostral to dorsal anterior cingulate cortices

Research indicates that hearing loss significantly contributes to tinnitus, but it alone does not fully explain its occurrence, as many people with hearing loss do not experience tinnitus. To identify a secondary factor for tinnitus generation, we examined a unique dataset of individuals with intermittent chronic tinnitus, who experience fluctuating periods of tinnitus. EEGs of healthy controls were compared to EEGs of participants who reported perceiving tinnitus on certain days, but no tinnitus on other days.. The EEG data revealed that tinnitus onset is associated with increased theta activity in the pregenual anterior cingulate cortex and decreased theta functional connectivity between the pregenual anterior cingulate cortex and the auditory cortex. Additionally, there is increased alpha effective connectivity from the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex to the pregenual anterior cingulate cortex. When tinnitus is not perceived, differences from healthy controls include increased alpha activity in the pregenual anterior cingulate cortex and heightened alpha connectivity between the pregenual anterior cingulate cortex and auditory cortex. This suggests that tinnitus is triggered by a switch involving increased theta activity in the pregenual anterior cingulate cortex and decreased theta connectivity between the pregenual anterior cingulate cortex and auditory cortex, leading to increased theta-gamma cross-frequency coupling, which correlates with tinnitus loudness. Increased alpha activity in the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex correlates with distress. Conversely, increased alpha activity in the pregenual anterior cingulate cortex can transiently suppress the phantom sound by enhancing theta connectivity to the auditory cortex. This mechanism parallels chronic neuropathic pain and suggests potential treatments for tinnitus by promoting alpha activity in the pregenual anterior cingulate cortex and reducing alpha activity in the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex through pharmacological or neuromodulatory approaches.

Reduced Neural Specialization for Word-level Linguistic Prosody in Children with Autism

Children with autism often show atypical brain lateralization for speech and language processing, however, it is unclear what linguistic component contributes to this phenomenon. Here we measured event-related potential (ERP) responses in 21 school-age autistic children and 25 age-matched neurotypical (NT) peers during listening to word-level prosodic stimuli. We found that both groups displayed larger late negative response (LNR) amplitude to native prosody than to nonnative prosody; however, unlike the NT group exhibiting left-lateralized LNR distinction of prosodic phonology, the autism group showed no evidence of LNR lateralization. Moreover, in both groups, the LNR effects were only present for prosodic phonology but not for phoneme-free prosodic acoustics. These results extended the findings of inadequate neural specialization for language in autism to sub-lexical prosodic structures.

A multidimensional characterization of the neurocognitive architecture underlying age-related temporal speech processing

Healthy aging is often associated with speech comprehension difficulties in everyday life situations despite a pure-tone hearing threshold in the normative range. Drawing on this background, we used a multidimensional approach to assess the functional and structural neural correlates underlying age-related temporal speech processing while controlling for pure-tone hearing acuity. Accordingly, we combined structural magnetic resonance imaging and electroencephalography, and collected behavioral data while younger and older adults completed a phonetic categorization and discrimination task with consonant-vowel syllables varying along a voice-onset time continuum. The behavioral results confirmed age-related temporal speech processing singularities which were reflected in a shift of the boundary of the psychometric categorization function, with older adults perceiving more syllable characterized by a short voice-onset time as /ta/ compared to younger adults. Furthermore, despite the absence of any between-group differences in phonetic discrimination abilities, older adults demonstrated longer N100/P200 latencies as well as increased P200 amplitudes while processing the consonant-vowel syllables varying in voice-onset time. Finally, older adults also exhibited a divergent anatomical gray matter infrastructure in bilateral auditory-related and frontal brain regions, as manifested in reduced cortical thickness and surface area. Notably, in the younger adults but not in the older adult cohort, cortical surface area in these two gross anatomical clusters correlated with the categorization of consonant-vowel syllables characterized by a short voice-onset time, suggesting the existence of a critical gray matter threshold that is crucial for consistent mapping of phonetic categories varying along the temporal dimension. Taken together, our results highlight the multifaceted dimensions of age-related temporal speech processing characteristics, and pave the way toward a better understanding of the relationships between hearing, speech and the brain in older age.

Left Lateralization of the Cortical Auditory-Evoked Potential Reflects Aided Processing and Speech-in-Noise Performance of Older Listeners With a Hearing Loss

OBJECTIVES

We analyzed the lateralization of the cortical auditory-evoked potential recorded previously from aided hearing-impaired listeners as part of a study on noise-mitigating hearing aid technologies. Specifically, we asked whether the degree of leftward lateralization in the magnitudes and latencies of these components was reduced by noise and, conversely, enhanced/restored by hearing aid technology. We further explored if individual differences in lateralization could predict speech-in-noise abilities in listeners when tested in the aided mode.

DESIGN

The study followed a double-blind within-subjects design. Nineteen older adults (8 females; mean age = 73.6 years, range = 56 to 86 years) with moderate to severe hearing loss participated. The cortical auditory-evoked potential was measured over 400 presentations of a synthetic /da/ stimulus which was delivered binaurally in a simulated aided mode using shielded ear-insert transducers. Sequences of the /da/ syllable were presented from the front at 75 dB SPL-C with continuous speech-shaped noise presented from the back at signal-to-noise ratios of 0, 5, and 10 dB. Four hearing aid conditions were tested: (1) omnidirectional microphone (OM) with noise reduction (NR) disabled, (2) OM with NR enabled, (3) directional microphone (DM) with NR disabled, and (4) DM with NR enabled. Lateralization of the P1 component and N1P2 complex was quantified across electrodes spanning the mid-coronal plane. Subsequently, listener speech-in-noise performance was assessed using the Repeat-Recall Test at the same signal-to-noise ratios and hearing aid conditions used to measure cortical activity.

RESULTS

As expected, both the P1 component and the N1P2 complex were of greater magnitude in electrodes over the left compared to the right hemisphere. In addition, N1 and P2 peaks tended to occur earlier over the left hemisphere, although the effect was mediated by an interaction of signal-to-noise ratio and hearing aid technology. At a group level, degrees of lateralization for the P1 component and the N1P2 complex were enhanced in the DM relative to the OM mode. Moreover, linear mixed-effects models suggested that the degree of leftward lateralization in the N1P2 complex, but not the P1 component, accounted for a significant portion of variability in speech-in-noise performance that was not related to age, hearing loss, hearing aid processing, or signal-to-noise ratio.

CONCLUSIONS

A robust leftward lateralization of cortical potentials was observed in older listeners when tested in the aided mode. Moreover, the degree of lateralization was enhanced by hearing aid technologies that improve the signal-to-noise ratio for speech. Accounting for the effects of signal-to-noise ratio, hearing aid technology, semantic context, and audiometric thresholds, individual differences in left-lateralized speech-evoked cortical activity were found to predict listeners' speech-in-noise abilities. Quantifying cortical auditory-evoked potential component lateralization may then be useful for profiling listeners' likelihood of communication success following clinical amplification.

Neuromodulation of the left auditory cortex with transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) has no effect on the categorical perception of speech sounds

Temporal cue analysis in auditory stimulus is essential in the perception of speech sounds. The effect of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) on auditory temporal processing remains unclear. In this study, we examined whether tDCS applied over the left auditory cortex (AC) has a polarity-specific behavioral effect on the categorical perception of speech sounds whose temporal features are modulated. Sixteen healthy volunteers in each group were received anodal, cathodal, or sham tDCS. A phonetic categorization task including auditory stimuli with varying voice onset time was performed before and during tDCS, and responses were analyzed. No statistically significant difference was observed between groups (anode, cathode, sham) and within the groups (pre-tDCS, during tDCS) in comparisons of the slope parameter of the identification function obtained from the phonetic categorization task data. Our results show that a single-session application of tDCS over the left AC does not significantly affect the categorical perception of speech sounds.

Allophonic perception of VOT contrasts in Spanish children with dyslexia

INTRODUCTION

Previous studies have evidenced a different mode of speech perception in dyslexia, characterized by the use of allophonic rather than phonemic units. People with dyslexia perceive phonemic features (such as voicing) less accurately than typical readers, but they perceive allophonic features (i.e., language-independent differences between speech sounds) more accurately.

METHOD

In this study, we investigated the perception of voicing contrasts in a sample of 204 Spanish children with or without dyslexia. Identification and discrimination data were collected for synthetic sounds varying along three different voice onset time (VOT) continua (ba/pa, de/te, and di/ti). Empirical data will be contrasted with a mathematical model of allophonic perception building up from neural oscillations and auditory temporal processing.

RESULTS

Children with dyslexia exhibited a general deficit in categorical precision; that is, they discriminated among phonemically contrastive pairs (around 0-ms VOT) less accurately than did chronological age controls, irrespective of the stimulus continuum. Children with dyslexia also exhibited a higher sensitivity in the discrimination of allophonic features (around ±30-ms VOT), but only for the stimulus continuum that was based on a nonlexical contrast (ba/pa).

CONCLUSION

Fitting the neural network model to the data collected for this continuum suggests that allophonic perception is due to a deficit in "subharmonic coupling" between high-frequency oscillations. Relationships with "temporal sampling framework" theory are discussed.

Auditory Sensory Gating of Speech and Nonspeech Stimuli

Purpose Auditory sensory gating is a neural measure of inhibition and is typically measured with a click or tonal stimulus. This electrophysiological study examined if stimulus characteristics and the use of speech stimuli affected auditory sensory gating indices. Method Auditory event-related potentials were elicited using natural speech, synthetic speech, and nonspeech stimuli in a traditional auditory gating paradigm in 15 adult listeners with normal hearing. Cortical responses were recorded at 64 electrode sites, and peak amplitudes and latencies to the different stimuli were extracted. Individual data were analyzed using repeated-measures analysis of variance. Results Significant gating of P1-N1-P2 peaks was observed for all stimulus types. N1-P2 cortical responses were affected by stimulus type, with significantly less neural inhibition of the P2 response observed for natural speech compared to nonspeech and synthetic speech. Conclusions Auditory sensory gating responses can be measured using speech and nonspeech stimuli in listeners with normal hearing. The results of the study indicate the amount of gating and neural inhibition observed is affected by the spectrotemporal characteristics of the stimuli used to evoke the neural responses.

Impaired posterior cingulate cortex-parahippocampus connectivity is associated with episodic memory retrieval problems in amnestic mild cognitive impairment

Episodic memory retention and retrieval decline are the most common impairments observed in amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) patients who progress to Alzheimer's disease (AD). Clinical electroencephalography research shows that patients with dementia due to AD exhibit a slowing of neural electrical activity in the parietal cortex. Memory research has further suggested that successful memory performance is associated with changes in a posterior cingulate-parahippocampal cortical network together with increased θ-γ oscillatory coupling, where θ oscillations act as carrier waves for γ oscillations, which contain the actual information. However, the neurophysiological link between the memory research and clinical studies investigating aMCI and AD is lacking. In this study, we look at brain activity in aMCI and how it relates to memory performance. We demonstrate decreased γ power in the posterior cingulate cortex and the left and right parahippocampus in aMCI patients in comparison to control participants. This goes together with reduced θ coherence between the posterior cingulate cortex and parahippocampus associated with altered memory performance aMCI patients in comparison to control participants. In addition, comparing patients with aMCI to control participants reveals an effect for θ-γ coupling for the posterior cingulate cortex, and the left and right parahippocampus. Taken together, our results show that parahippocampus and posterior cingulate cortex interact via θ-γ coupling, which is associated with memory recollection and is altered in aMCI patients, offering a potential candidate mechanism for memory decline in aMCI.

Acoustics versus linguistics? Context is Part and Parcel to lateralized processing of the parts and parcels of speech

The purpose of this review is to provide an accessible exploration of key considerations of lateralization in speech and non-speech perception using clear and defined language. From these considerations, the primary arguments for each side of the linguistics versus acoustics debate are outlined and explored in context of emerging integrative theories. This theoretical approach entails a perspective that linguistic and acoustic features differentially contribute to leftward bias, depending on the given context. Such contextual factors include stimulus parameters and variables of stimulus presentation (e.g., noise/silence and monaural/binaural) and variances in individuals (sex, handedness, age, and behavioural ability). Discussion of these factors and their interaction is also aimed towards providing an outline of variables that require consideration when developing and reviewing methodology of acoustic and linguistic processing laterality studies. Thus, there are three primary aims in the present paper: (1) to provide the reader with key theoretical perspectives from the acoustics/linguistics debate and a synthesis of the two viewpoints, (2) to highlight key caveats for generalizing findings regarding predominant models of speech laterality, and (3) to provide a practical guide for methodological control using predominant behavioural measures (i.e., gap detection and dichotic listening tasks) and/or neurophysiological measures (i.e., mismatch negativity) of speech laterality.

Pre-attentive auditory change detection for rapid auditory transient combinations: Insight from age-related processing changes

The N1 event-related potential (ERP) enhancement to auditory transients preceded briefly by another transient has been interpreted as a reflection of latent inhibition, or alternatively, as a superimposing mismatch negativity (MMN) to rare transient event combinations. In a previous study (Volosin, Gaál, & Horváth, 2017a), when rare glides preceded frequent gaps by 150 ms in continuous tones, gap-related N1 was enhanced in younger adults while P2 was attenuated both in younger and older adults, which could be parsimoniously explained by MMN overlap which was delayed with aging. The present study replicated and extended these results with a condition in which the roles of the two event types were reversed. Transients separated by 150 ms elicited delayed MMN in older adults, supporting the MMN interpretation over the latent inhibition account. Furthermore, the divergence of N1 and MMN elicitation patterns demonstrated the independence of N1 and MMN.

Electrophysiological correlates of the spatial temporal order judgment task

The study investigated auditory temporal processing on a tens of milliseconds scale that is the interval when two consecutive stimuli are processed either together or as distinct events. Distinctiveness is defined by one's ability to make correct order judgments of the presented sounds and is measured via the spatial temporal order judgement task (TOJ). The study aimed to identify electrophysiological indices of the TOJ performance. Tone pairs were presented with inter-stimulus intervals (ISI) varying between 25 and 75 ms while EEG was recorded. A pronounced amplitude change in the P2 interval was found between the event-related potential (ERP) of tone pairs having ISI = 55 and 65 ms, but it was a characteristic only of the group having poor behavioral thresholds. With the two groups combined, the amplitude change between these ERPs in the P2 interval showed a medium-size correlation with the behavioral threshold.

Tinnitus and neuropathic pain share a common neural substrate in the form of specific brain connectivity and microstate profiles

Tinnitus and neuropathic pain share similar pathophysiological, clinical, and treatment characteristics. In this EEG study, a group of tinnitus (n = 100) and neuropathic pain (n = 100) patients are compared to each other and to a healthy control group (n = 100). Spectral analysis demonstrates gamma band activity within the primary auditory and somatosensory cortices in patients with tinnitus and neuropathic pain, respectively. A conjunction analysis further demonstrates an overlap of tinnitus and pain related activity in the anterior and posterior cingulate cortex as well as in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex in comparison to healthy controls. Further analysis reveals that similar states characterize tinnitus and neuropathic pain patients, two of which differ from the healthy group and two of which are shared. Both pain and tinnitus patients spend half of the time in one specific microstate. Seed-based functional connectivity with the source within the predominant microstate shows delta, alpha1, and gamma lagged phase synchronization overlap with multiple brain areas between pain and tinnitus. These data suggest that auditory and somatosensory phantom perceptions share an overlapping brain network with common activation and connectivity patterns and are differentiated by specific sensory cortex gamma activation.

Resting state electrical brain activity and connectivity in fibromyalgia

The exact mechanism underlying fibromyalgia is unknown, but increased facilitatory modulation and/or dysfunctional descending inhibitory pathway activity are posited as possible mechanisms contributing to sensitization of the central nervous system. The primary goal of this study is to identify a fibromyalgia neural circuit that can account for these abnormalities in central pain. The second goal is to gain a better understanding of the functional connectivity between the default and the executive attention network (salience network plus dorsal lateral prefrontal cortex) in fibromyalgia. We examine neural activity associated with fibromyalgia (N = 44) and compare these with healthy controls (N = 44) using resting state source localized EEG. Our data support an important role of the pregenual anterior cingulate cortex but also suggest that the degree of activation and the degree of integration between different brain areas is important. The inhibition of the connectivity between the dorsal lateral prefrontal cortex and the posterior cingulate cortex on the pain inhibitory pathway seems to be limited by decreased functional connectivity with the pregenual anterior cingulate cortex. Our data highlight the functional dynamics of brain regions integrated in brain networks in fibromyalgia patients.

Occipital Nerve Field Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation Normalizes Imbalance Between Pain Detecting and Pain Inhibitory Pathways in Fibromyalgia

Occipital nerve field (OCF) stimulation with subcutaneously implanted electrodes is used to treat headaches, more generalized pain, and even failed back surgery syndrome via unknown mechanisms. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) can predict the efficacy of implanted electrodes. The purpose of this study is to unravel the neural mechanisms involved in global pain suppression, mediated by occipital nerve field stimulation, within the realm of fibromyalgia. Nineteen patients with fibromyalgia underwent a placebo-controlled OCF tDCS. Electroencephalograms were recorded at baseline after active and sham stimulation. In comparison with healthy controls, patients with fibromyalgia demonstrate increased dorsal anterior cingulate cortex, increased premotor/dorsolateral prefrontal cortex activity, and an imbalance between pain-detecting dorsal anterior cingulate cortex and pain-suppressing pregenual anterior cingulate cortex activity, which is normalized after active tDCS but not sham stimulation associated with increased pregenual anterior cingulate cortex activation. The imbalance improvement between the pregenual anterior cingulate cortex and the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex is related to clinical changes. An imbalance assumes these areas communicate and, indeed, abnormal functional connectivity between the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex and pregenual anterior cingulate cortex is noted to be caused by a dysfunctional effective connectivity from the pregenual anterior cingulate cortex to the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex, which improves and normalizes after real tDCS but not sham tDCS. In conclusion, OCF tDCS exerts its effect via activation of the descending pain inhibitory pathway and de-activation of the salience network, both of which are abnormal in fibromyalgia.

Influencing connectivity and cross-frequency coupling by real-time source localized neurofeedback of the posterior cingulate cortex reduces tinnitus related distress

Background

In this study we are using source localized neurofeedback to moderate tinnitus related distress by influencing neural activity of the target region as well as the connectivity within the default network.

Hypothesis

We hypothesize that up-training alpha and down-training beta and gamma activity in the posterior cingulate cortex has a moderating effect on tinnitus related distress by influencing neural activity of the target region as well as the connectivity within the default network and other functionally connected brain areas.

Methods

Fifty-eight patients with chronic tinnitus were included in the study. Twenty-three tinnitus patients received neurofeedback training of the posterior cingulate cortex with the aim of up-training alpha and down-training beta and gamma activity, while 17 patients underwent training of the lingual gyrus as a control situation. A second control group consisted of 18 tinnitus patients on a waiting list for future tinnitus treatment.

Results

This study revealed that neurofeedback training of the posterior cingulate cortex results in a significant decrease of tinnitus related distress. No significant effect on neural activity of the target region could be obtained. However, functional and effectivity connectivity changes were demonstrated between remote brain regions or functional networks as well as by altering cross frequency coupling of the posterior cingulate cortex.

Conclusion

This suggests that neurofeedback could remove the information, processed in beta and gamma, from the carrier wave, alpha, which transports the high frequency information and influences the salience attributed to the tinnitus sound. Based on the observation that much pathology is the result of an abnormal functional connectivity within and between neural networks various pathologies should be considered eligible candidates for the application of source localized EEG based neurofeedback training.

Allostasis in health and food addiction

Homeostasis is the basis of modern medicine and allostasis, a further elaboration of homeostasis, has been defined as stability through change, which was later modified to predictive reference resetting. It has been suggested that pleasure is related to salience (behavioral relevance), and withdrawal has been linked to allostasis in addictive types. The question arises how the clinical and neural signatures of pleasure, salience, allostasis and withdrawal relate, both in a non-addicted and addicted state. Resting state EEGs were performed in 66 people, involving a food-addicted obese group, a non-food addicted obese group and a lean control group. Correlation analyses were performed on behavioral data, and correlation, comparative and conjunction analyses were performed to extract electrophysiological relationships between pleasure, salience, allostasis and withdrawal. Pleasure/liking seems to be the phenomenological expression that enough salient stimuli are obtained, and withdrawal can be seen as a motivational incentive because due to allostatic reference resetting, more stimuli are required. In addition, in contrast to non-addiction, a pathological, non-adaptive salience attached to food results in withdrawal mediated through persistent allostatic reference resetting.

The brain, obesity and addiction: an EEG neuroimaging study

Obesity is among the greatest challenges facing healthcare systems with 20% of the world’s population afflicted. Great controversy exists whether obesity can be regarded as an addictive disorder or not. Recently the Yale Food Addiction Scale questionnaire has been developed as a tool to identify individuals with traits of addiction towards food. Using clinical and source localized EEG data we dichotomize obesity. Brain activity in food-addicted and non-food-addicted obese people is compared to alcohol-addicted and non-addicted lean controls. We show that food addiction shares common neural brain activity with alcohol addiction. This ‘addiction neural brain activity’ consists of the dorsal and pregenual anterior cingulate cortex, parahippocampal area and precuneus. Furthermore, common neural obesity neural brain activity exists as well. The ‘obesity neural brain activity’ consists of dorsal and pregenual anterior cingulate cortex, posterior cingulate extending into the precuneus/cuneus as well as the parahippocampal and inferior parietal area. However food-addicted differ from non-food-addicted obese people by opposite activity in the anterior cingulate gyrus. This food addiction and non-food-addiction obesity dichotomy demonstrates there is at least 2 different kinds of obesity with overlapping network activity, but different in anterior cingulate cortex activity.

Transcranial Alternating Current Stimulation (tACS) differentially modulates speech perception in young and older adults

BACKGROUND

Normal aging is accompanied by a functional decline in processing temporal features of spoken language, such as voice onset time (VOT). On an electrophysiological level, this finding is paralleled by altered patterns of gamma oscillations.

OBJECTIVE

Using 40 Hz transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) over the bilateral auditory cortex, this study aims to compare the effect of tACS to modulate VOT-processing in samples of healthy young and older adults.

METHODS

Twenty-five healthy young (age 20-35 years) and 20 older adults (age 60-75 years) participated in this study. Presented with an auditory phoneme categorization task participants received 40 Hz and 6 Hz tACS on two consecutive sessions.

RESULTS

While 40 Hz tACS diminished task accuracy in young adults, older adults benefitted from this stimulation resulting in a more precise phonetic categorization.

CONCLUSION

The results of the study are discussed with respect to the non-linear relationship between gamma oscillations in the vicinity of the auditory cortex and VOT-processing. The present findings are promising in the context of an intervention for subjects with impaired ability to process temporal acoustic features in the speech signal.

Changed categorical perception of consonant-vowel syllables induced by transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS)

Background

Speech-related disorders may refer to impairment of temporal analysis in the human auditory system. By the advance of non-invasive brain stimulation new forms of therapy arise. In the present study, we examined the neuromodulatory effect of auditory tDCS on the perception of temporal modulated speech syllables. In three experimental sessions we assessed phonetic categorization of consonant–vowels (CV)-syllables (/da/,/ta/) with varying voice onset times (VOT) during sham, anodal, and cathodal tDCS delivered bilateral to the auditory cortex (AC). Subsequently, we recorded auditory evoked potentials (AEP) in response to voiced (/ba/,/da/,/ga/) and voiceless (/pa/,/ta/,/ka/) CV-syllables.

Results

In result, we demonstrate that bilateral tDCS of the AC can modulate CV-syllable perception. Behaviorally, cathodal tDCS improved phonetic categorization abilities in a VOT continuum accompanied by an elevation of the P50 amplitude of the AEP to CV-syllables during the anodal tDCS after effect.

Conclusions

The present study demonstrates the ability of bilateral tDCS over the AC to ameliorate speech perception. The results may have clinical implications by fostering potential approaches for a treatment of speech-related pathologies with a deficit of temporal processing.

Deafferentation-based pathophysiological differences in phantom sound: Tinnitus with and without hearing loss

Tinnitus has been considered an auditory phantom percept. Recently a theoretical multiphase compensation mechanism at a cortical level has been hypothesized linking auditory deafferentation to tinnitus. This Bayesian brain model predicts that two very different kinds of tinnitus should exist, depending on the amount of hearing loss: an auditory cortex related form of tinnitus not associated with hearing loss, and a (para)hippocampal form associated with hearing loss, in which the auditory cortex might be of little relevance. In order to verify this model, resting state source analyzed EEG recordings were made in 129 tinnitus patients, and correlated to the mean hearing loss, the range of the hearing loss and the hearing loss at the tinnitus frequency. Results demonstrate that tinnitus can be linked to 2 very different mechanisms. In patients with little or no hearing loss, the tinnitus seems to be more related to auditory cortex activity, but not to (para)hippocampal memory related activity, whereas in tinnitus patients with more severe hearing loss, tinnitus seems to be related to (para)hippocampal mechanisms. Furthermore hearing loss seems to drive the communication between the auditory cortex and the parahippocampus, as measured by functional and effective connectivity.

Modulation of pre-attentive spectro-temporal feature processing in the human auditory system by HD-tDCS

The present study examined the functional lateralization of the human auditory cortex (AC) for pre-attentive spectro-temporal feature processing. By using high-definition transcranial direct current stimulation (HD-tDCS), we systematically modulated neuronal activity of the bilateral AC. We assessed the influence of anodal and cathodal HD-tDCS delivered over the left or right AC on auditory mismatch negativity (MMN) in response to temporal as well as spectral deviants in 12 healthy subjects. The results showed that MMN to temporal deviants was significantly enhanced by anodal HD-tDCS applied over the left AC only. Our data indicate a left hemispheric dominance for the pre-attentive processing of low-level temporal information.

Lateralization of music processing with noises in the auditory cortex: an fNIRS study

The present study is to determine the effects of background noise on the hemispheric lateralization in music processing by exposing 14 subjects to four different auditory environments: music segments only, noise segments only, music + noise segments, and the entire music interfered by noise segments. The hemodynamic responses in both hemispheres caused by the perception of music in 10 different conditions were measured using functional near-infrared spectroscopy. As a feature to distinguish stimulus-evoked hemodynamics, the difference between the mean and the minimum value of the hemodynamic response for a given stimulus was used. The right-hemispheric lateralization in music processing was about 75% (instead of continuous music, only music segments were heard). If the stimuli were only noises, the lateralization was about 65%. But, if the music was mixed with noises, the right-hemispheric lateralization has increased. Particularly, if the noise was a little bit lower than the music (i.e., music level 10~15%, noise level 10%), the entire subjects showed the right-hemispheric lateralization: This is due to the subjects' effort to hear the music in the presence of noises. However, too much noise has reduced the subjects' discerning efforts.

Tinnitus and musical hallucinosis: the same but more

While tinnitus can be interpreted as a simple or elementary form of auditory phantom perception, musical hallucinosis is a more complex auditory phantom phenomenon not only limited to sound perception, but also containing semantic and musical content. It most often occurs in association with hearing loss. To elucidate the relation between simple and complex auditory phantom percepts a source localized electroencephalography (EEG) study is performed. The analyses showed in both simple and complex auditory phantoms an increase in theta-gamma activity and coupling within the auditory cortex that could be associated with the thalamocortical dysrhythmia model. Furthermore increased beta activity within the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex and anterior insula is demonstrated, that might be related to auditory awareness, salience and its attribution to an external sound source. The difference between simple and complex auditory phantoms relies on differential alpha band activity within the auditory cortex and on beta activity in the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex and (para)hippocampal area. This could be related to memory based load dependency, while suppression within the primary visual cortex might be due the presence of a continuous auditory cortex activation inducing an inhibitory signal to the visual system. Complex auditory phantoms further activate the right inferior frontal area (right sided Broca homolog) and right superior temporal pole that might be associated with the musical content. In summary, this study showed for the first time that simple and complex auditory phantoms might share a common neural substrate but differ as complex auditory phantoms are associated with activation in brain areas related to music and language processing.

On the planum temporale lateralization in suprasegmental speech perception: evidence from a study investigating behavior, structure, and function

This study combines functional and structural magnetic resonance imaging to test the "asymmetric sampling in time" (AST) hypothesis, which makes assertions about the symmetrical and asymmetrical representation of speech in the primary and nonprimary auditory cortex. Twenty-three volunteers participated in this parametric clustered-sparse fMRI study. The availability of slowly changing acoustic cues in spoken sentences was systematically reduced over continuous segments with varying lengths (100, 150, 200, 250 ms) by utilizing local time-reversion. As predicted by the hypothesis, functional lateralization in Heschl's gyrus could not be observed. Lateralization in the planum temporale and posterior superior temporal gyrus shifted towards the right hemisphere with decreasing suprasegmental temporal integrity. Cortical thickness of the planum temporale was automatically measured. Participants with an L > R cortical thickness performed better on the in-scanner auditory pattern-matching task. Taken together, these findings support the AST hypothesis and provide substantial novel insight into the division of labor between left and right nonprimary auditory cortex functions during comprehension of spoken utterances. In addition, the present data yield support for a structural-behavioral relationship in the nonprimary auditory cortex.

Processing of self-initiated speech-sounds is different in musicians

Musicians and musically untrained individuals have been shown to differ in a variety of functional brain processes such as auditory analysis and sensorimotor interaction. At the same time, internally operating forward models are assumed to enable the organism to discriminate the sensory outcomes of self-initiated actions from other sensory events by deriving predictions from efference copies of motor commands about forthcoming sensory consequences. As a consequence, sensory responses to stimuli that are triggered by a self-initiated motor act are suppressed relative to the same but externally initiated stimuli, a phenomenon referred to as motor-induced suppression (MIS) of sensory cortical feedback. Moreover, MIS in the auditory domain has been shown to be modulated by the predictability of certain properties such as frequency or stimulus onset. The present study compares auditory processing of predictable and unpredictable self-initiated 0-delay speech sounds and piano tones between musicians and musical laymen by means of an event-related potential (ERP) and topographic pattern analysis (TPA) [microstate analysis or evoked potential (EP) mapping] approach. As in previous research on the topic of MIS, the amplitudes of the auditory event-related potential (AEP) N1 component were significantly attenuated for predictable and unpredictable speech sounds in both experimental groups to a comparable extent. On the other hand, AEP N1 amplitudes were enhanced for unpredictable self-initiated piano tones in both experimental groups similarly and MIS did not develop for predictable self-initiated piano tones at all. The more refined EP mapping revealed that the microstate exhibiting a typical auditory N1-like topography was significantly shorter in musicians when speech sounds and piano tones were self-initiated and predictable. In contrast, non-musicians only exhibited shorter auditory N1-like microstate durations in response to self-initiated and predictable piano tones. Taken together, our findings suggest that besides the known effect of MIS, internally operating forward models also facilitate early acoustic analysis of complex tones by means of faster processing time as indicated by shorter auditory N1-like microstate durations in the first ~200 ms after stimulus onset. In addition, musicians seem to profit from this facilitation also during the analysis of speech sounds as indicated by comparable auditory N1-like microstate duration patterns between speech and piano conditions. In contrast, non-musicians did not show such an effect.

Effects of diet on early stage cortical perception and discrimination of syllables differing in voice-onset time: a longitudinal ERP study in 3 and 6 month old infants

The influence of diet on cortical processing of syllables was examined at 3 and 6 months in 239 infants who were breastfed or fed milk or soy-based formula. Event-related potentials to syllables differing in voice-onset-time were recorded from placements overlying brain areas specialized for language processing. P1 component amplitude and latency measures indicated that at both ages infants in all groups could extract and discriminate categorical information from syllables. Between-syllable amplitude differences-present across groups-were generally greater for SF infants. Responses peaked earlier over left hemisphere speech-perception than speech-production areas. Encoding was faster in BF than formula-fed infants. The results show that in preverbal infants: (1) discrimination of phonetic information occurs in early stages of cortical processing; (2) areas overlying brain regions of speech perception are activated earlier than those involved in speech production; and (3) these processes are differentially modulated by infant diet and environmental factors.

Processing of voiced and unvoiced acoustic stimuli in musicians

Past research has shown that musical training induces changes in the processing of supra-segmental aspects of speech, such as pitch and prosody. The aim of the present study was to determine whether musical expertise also leads to an altered neurophysiological processing of sub-segmental information available in the speech signal, in particular the voice-onset-time. Using high-density EEG-recordings we analyzed the neurophysiological responses to voiced and unvoiced consonant-vowel-syllables and noise-analogs in 26 German speaking adult musicians and non-musicians. From the EEG the N1 amplitude of the event-related potential and two microstates from the topographical EEG analysis (one around the N1 amplitude and one immediately preceding the N1 microstate) were calculated to the different stimuli. Similar to earlier studies the N1 amplitude was different to voiced and unvoiced stimuli in non-musicians with larger amplitudes to voiced stimuli. The more refined microstate analysis revealed that the microstate within the N1 time window was shorter to unvoiced stimuli in non-musicians. For musicians there was no difference for the N1 amplitudes and the corresponding microstates between voiced and unvoiced stimuli. In addition, there was a longer very early microstate preceding the microstate at the N1 time window to non-speech stimuli only in musicians. Taken together, our findings suggest that musicians process unvoiced stimuli (irrespective whether these stimuli are speech or non-speech stimuli) differently than controls. We propose that musicians utilize the same network to analyze unvoiced stimuli as for the analysis of voiced stimuli. As a further explanation it is also possible that musicians devote more neurophysiological resources into the analysis of unvoiced segments.

The neural network of phantom sound changes over time: a comparison between recent-onset and chronic tinnitus patients

Tinnitus is characterized by an ongoing conscious perception of a sound in the absence of any external sound source. Chronic tinnitus is notoriously characterized by its resistance to treatment. In the present study the objective was to verify whether the neural generators and/or the neural tinnitus network, evaluated through EEG recordings, change over time as previously suggested by MEG. We therefore analyzed the source-localized EEG recordings of a very homogenous group of left-sided narrow-band noise tinnitus patients. Results indicate that the generators involved in tinnitus of recent onset seem to change over time with increased activity in several brain areas [auditory cortex, supplementary motor area and dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (dACC) plus insula], associated with a decrease in connectivity between the different auditory and nonauditory brain structures. An exception to this general connectivity decrease is an increase in gamma-band connectivity between the left primary and secondary auditory cortex and the left insula, and also between the auditory cortices and the right dorsal lateral prefrontal cortex. These networks are both connected to the left parahippocampal area. Thus acute and chronic tinnitus are related to differential activity and connectivity in a network comprising the auditory cortices, insula, dACC and premotor cortex.

Acoustic processing of temporally modulated sounds in infants: evidence from a combined near-infrared spectroscopy and EEG study

Speech perception requires rapid extraction of the linguistic content from the acoustic signal. The ability to efficiently process rapid changes in auditory information is important for decoding speech and thereby crucial during language acquisition. Investigating functional networks of speech perception in infancy might elucidate neuronal ensembles supporting perceptual abilities that gate language acquisition. Interhemispheric specializations for language have been demonstrated in infants. How these asymmetries are shaped by basic temporal acoustic properties is under debate. We recently provided evidence that newborns process non-linguistic sounds sharing temporal features with language in a differential and lateralized fashion. The present study used the same material while measuring brain responses of 6 and 3 month old infants using simultaneous recordings of electroencephalography (EEG) and near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). NIRS reveals that the lateralization observed in newborns remains constant over the first months of life. While fast acoustic modulations elicit bilateral neuronal activations, slow modulations lead to right-lateralized responses. Additionally, auditory-evoked potentials and oscillatory EEG responses show differential responses for fast and slow modulations indicating a sensitivity for temporal acoustic variations. Oscillatory responses reveal an effect of development, that is, 6 but not 3 month old infants show stronger theta-band desynchronization for slowly modulated sounds. Whether this developmental effect is due to increasing fine-grained perception for spectrotemporal sounds in general remains speculative. Our findings support the notion that a more general specialization for acoustic properties can be considered the basis for lateralization of speech perception. The results show that concurrent assessment of vascular based imaging and electrophysiological responses have great potential in the research on language acquisition.

Both frequency and interaural delay affect event-related potential responses to binaural gap

Human listeners are extraordinarily sensitive to a transient break in interaural correlation (called binaural gap). In this study, a binaural gap embedded in interaurally correlated noise markers elicited marked scalp event-related potentials (ERPs). ERPs to the binaural gap in narrowband noise with the center frequency of 1600 Hz were significantly weaker than those for narrowband noise with the center frequency of 400 or 800 Hz. Introducing the interaural time difference (ITD) of 4 ms weakened the ERPs for either 400-Hz or 800-Hz noise. Introducing the ITD of 2 ms, however, only weakened the ERPs for 800-Hz but not 400-Hz noise. Thus central representations of a transient break in interaural correlation for narrowband noises are affected by both frequency and ITD.

Spatial correspondence between functional MRI (fMRI) activations and cortical current density maps of event-related potentials (ERP): a study with four tasks

We investigated the spatial correspondence between functional MRI (fMRI) activations and cortical current density maps of event-related potentials (ERPs) reconstructed without fMRI priors. The presence of a significant spatial correspondence is a prerequisite for direct integration of the two modalities, enabling to combine the high spatial resolution of fMRI with the high temporal resolution of ERPs. Four separate tasks were employed: visual stimulation with a pattern-reversal chequerboard, recognition of images of nameable objects, recognition of written words, and auditory stimulation with a piano note. ERPs were acquired with 19 recording channels, and source localisation was performed using a realistic head model, a standard cortical mesh and the multiple sparse priors method. Spatial correspondence was evaluated at group level over 10 subjects, by means of a voxel-by-voxel test and a test on the distribution of local maxima. Although not complete, it was significant for the visual stimulation task, image and word recognition tasks (P < 0.001 for both types of test), but not for the auditory stimulation task. These findings indicate that partial but significant spatial correspondence between the two modalities can be found even with a small number of channels, for three of the four tasks employed. Absence of correspondence for the auditory stimulation task was caused by the unfavourable situation of the activated cortex being perpendicular to the overlying scalp, whose consequences were exacerbated by the small number of channels. The present study corroborates existing literature in this field, and may be of particular relevance to those interested in combining fMRI with ERPs acquired with the standard 10-20 system.

Functions of the left and right posterior temporal lobes during segmental and suprasegmental speech perception

This manuscript reviews evidence from neuroimaging studies on elementary processes of speech perception and their implications for our understanding of the brain-speech relationship. Essentially, differential preferences of the left and right auditory-related cortex for rapidly and slowly changing acoustic cues that constitute (sub)segmental and suprasegmental parameters, e. g. phonemes, prosody, and rhythm. The adopted parameter-based research approach takes the early stages of speech perception as being of fundamental relevance for simple as well as complex language functions. The current state of knowledge necessitates an extensive revision of the classical neurologically oriented model of language processing that was aimed at identifying the neural correlates of linguistic components (e. g. phonology, syntax and semantics) more than at substantiating the importance of (supra)segmental information during speech perception.
