Surgical removal of giant pelvic liposarcoma after preoperative transcatheter arterial embolization

Liposarcoma includes tumors with a wide range of malignancies, from mostly benign to malignant. We report a case of a 73 year-old man who was admitted for urination and defecation disorder. Contract computed tomography (CT) revealed a mass of approximately 21 cm occupying the pelvis, bladder, ureter, prostate, and rectum being compressed by the tumor. Since intraoperative mass bleeding was predicted, we embolized the tumor nutrition artery and performed a total pelvic exenteration. Regarding the course of the operation, SSI and pelvic infection were developed after the operation. The patient was discharged 21 days after surgery. Moreover, there is no evidence of local recurrence and distant metastasis at 18 months after surgery. Furthermore, in giant pelvic liposarcoma, it is useful to identify a nutritional artery of a giant tumor by angiography before surgery, and surgical resection can be safely done by performing preoperative transcatheter arterial embolization.

Oral liposarcoma in elderly: Case report and literature analysis

RATIONALE

Oral liposarcoma is an extremely rare lesion that is often clinically misdiagnosed as a benign lesion because of its asymptomatic and indolent clinical course. we report a case of atypical lipomatous tumor/well-differentiated liposarcoma (ALT/WDL) of buccal mucosa, provisionally diagnosed as lipoma.

PATIENT CONCERNS

A 97-year-old female was referred to dentistry and oral surgery department with an asymptomatic mass on the right buccal mucosa which had been present for an unknown period of time.

DIAGNOSIS

Magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated a well-circumscribed lesion at the right buccal mucosa, and a lipoma was suspected.

INTERVENTIONS

Surgical removal was performed, and a diagnosis of ALT/WDL was made. She and her family refused additional treatment due to her age.

OUTCOMES

At the 10 months follow-up, the patient remained free of disease.

LESSONS

The indolent clinical course and small size of oral liposarcoma can lead to provisional clinical diagnosis of benign lesion.

Dyspnea caused by a giant retroperitoneal liposarcoma: A case report

Liposarcomas are the most common soft tissue tumors with various histological subtypes. They usually appear in the retroperitoneal region of the abdomen, but their symptomatology remains unclear and their diagnosis, as well as treatment challenging. A case of a 55-year-old female patient with dyspnea and light diffuse abdominal pain caused by a giant retroperitoneal liposarcoma is presented. The patient had an unremarkable medical history, while the computed tomography scan revealed a large mass at the right portion of the abdomen, with its upper limits to the lower edge and the gate portion of the liver. The mass was in contact with the right kidney, the inferior vena cava and the right renal vein, causing mild dilation of the right kidney pelvis. Without any evidence of intra-abdominal metastases, the tumor was surgically resected. The histological analysis of the tumor revealed a well-differentiated liposarcoma. The patient had an uneventful recovery and was discharged on the 10th postoperative day. Until today (4 years later) she remains asymptomatic, without any signs of recurrence. The retroperitoneal liposarcoma is a clinical entity with unclear clinical symptoms and the physician should consider including it in the differential diagnosis of a majority of symptoms, such as dyspnea.
