Abstract
BACKGROUND Affective temperaments are documented predictors of psychopathology, but cumulating data suggest their relationship with coronary artery disease (CAD). We aimed to evaluate their role in relation to surrogate semiquantitative markers of coronary plaque burden, as assessed by coronary CT angiography (CCTA). METHODS We included 351 patients who were referred for CCTA due to suspected CAD. All patients completed the Temperament Evaluation of Memphis, Pisa, Paris and San Diego Autoquestionnaire (TEMPS-A). The severity and extent of CAD was evaluated by CCTA, applying semiquantitative plaque burden scores, notably Segment Involvement Score (SIS) and Segment Stenosis Score (SSS). Logistic regression analyses were performed to define the predictors of CAD severity and extent. RESULTS Regarding the scores evaluated by TEMPS-A that consists of 110 questions, in men, significant inverse association was found between hyperthymic temperament score and SSS (β = -0.143, (95%CI: -0.091 to -0.004), p = 0.034). Compared to the TEMPS-A form, applying the abbreviated version - containing 40 questions - significant relationship between affective temperaments and SSS or SIS was found in case of both sexes. Concerning men, hyperthymic temperament was demonstrated to be independent predictor of both SSS (β = -0.193, (95%CI: -0.224 to -0.048), p = 0.004) and SIS (β = -0.194, (95%CI: -0.202 to -0.038), p = 0.004). Additionally, we proved, that significant positive association between irritable temperament and SSS (β = 0.152, (95%CI: 0.002 to 0.269), p = 0.047) and SIS (β = 0.155, (95%CI: 0.004 to 0.221), p = 0.042) exists among women. LIMITATIONS Cross-sectional analysis of a single center study with self-reported questionnaires. CONCLUSIONS Assessment of affective temperaments could offer added value in stratifying cardiovascular risk for patients beyond traditional risk factors.

Abstract
The properties of temperament are due to differences in the excitability of brain systems that integrate the behavior of an individual, his emotions and autonomic functions and play an important role in the adaptation of the body to the environment. The mechanisms of the relationship between individual characteristics of temperament properties and regulation of the cardiovascular system have not been fully elucidated. The aim of this study to assess the relationship between expression of temperament traits and the autonomic regulation of the cardiovascular system in the baseline condition and in response to exposure to cold. The study involved 25 healthy male volunteers aged between 18 and 21 years. Temperament traits were measured using the Structure of Temperament Questionnaire. During the study, heart rate variability (HRV) parameters (5 min), systolic and diastolic blood pressure (SBP and DBP) were recorded at room temperature. In the period from 5 to 10 min of exposure in an UShZ-25 N cold chamber (-20 °C), HRV were assessed. Immediately after the subjects came out from the cold chamber, blood pressure was measured. Then, 5 min after they left the cold chamber, SBP, DBP, HRV were recorded. The results showed that in young people with different expressions of temperamental properties, no differences were found in the regulation of heart rhythm by the autonomic nervous system in the baseline condition. The high object-related plasticity, i.e. the ease of switching from one type of activity to another, linked with autonomic flexibility and blood pressure control, which restrains a significant increase in blood pressure when exposed to short-term cold, and contributes to the preservation of health.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are significant contributors to global disability and mortality. In addition to traditional cardiovascular risk factors, emerging evidence has suggested that mental health plays a critical role as a risk factor for CVDs. The present study aimed to determine the associations between mood instability and CVDs using Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis. METHODS As instrumental variables, we used 62 independent single-nucleotide polymorphisms associated with mood instability at the genome-wide significance threshold in the UK Biobank. Summary-level data for seven CVDs were obtained from the publicly available genome-wide association studies. The estimates were pooled by using a random-effects inverse-variance weighted method. The results were further validated in sensitivity analysis where different MR methods were compared. RESULTS After correcting for multiple testing, our analysis revealed that genetic liability to mood instability was associated with increased odds of six cardiovascular diseases, including deep vein thrombosis (odds ratio (OR) 1.21; confidence interval (CI) 1.03-1.42), pulmonary embolism (OR 1.42; 95 % CI 1.09-1.85), heart failure (OR 1.20; 95 % CI 1.09-1.32), arterial hypertension (OR 1.22; 95 % CI 1.11-1.34), myocardial infarction (OR 1.25; 95 % CI 1.11-1.40), and coronary artery disease (OR 1.25; 95 % CI 1.13-1.39). Further, the genetic liability to mood instability was associated with HDL cholesterol, triglycerides, body mass index, smoking, and depression. In multivariable MR models, the association between genetic liability to mood instability and CVDs remained independent from those cardiovascular risk factors. CONCLUSION The present MR study suggests potential causal associations of genetic liability to mood instability with increased risk of a broad range of CVDs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) is a prevalent autoimmune disease of thyroid gland with a shared immunological mechanism with mood disorders. Affective temperament (AT) is a biologically determined personality trait that has been linked to mood disorders. The aim of this study was to examine the association between dominant AT and levels of psychosomatic symptoms in women newly diagnosed with HT in comparison to clinically healthy subjects. METHODS The observational cross-sectional study with nested case control study was involving 146 consecutive participants, who were divided into three groups. The two study groups consisted of women with HT (73), including 49 with hypothyroid HT and 24 with euthyroid HT, and the third group was a control group of healthy participants (73). The Serbian version of the TEMPS-A was utilized to assess AT, while the 4DSQ was used to measure psychosomatic symptoms. RESULTS The results showed that hyperthymic AT was dominant in all examined groups. The groups with HT differed from the control group in terms of depressive and cyclothymic AT. Furthermore, the study found higher levels of psychosomatic symptoms in the group with HT compared to the control group, with significant differences in distress (p = 0.005) and somatization (p = 0.023) levels. All AT was associated with levels of psychosomatic symptoms in subjects with hypothyroid HT. In contrast, in subjects with euthyroid HT, the association was only found between depressive and cyclothymic AT with distress and depression levels, as well as between somatization and cyclothymic AT. No association was found between AT and anxiety levels in subjects with euthyroid HT. CONCLUSION The research found differences between study groups in the association between AT and levels of psychosomatic symptoms. Further research with a larger sample size is necessary to more clearly define the associations between affective temperaments and psychosomatic symptoms in women with euthyroid and hypothyroid HT.

Abstract
Blood pressure and vascular ageing trajectories differ between men and women. These differences develop due to sex-related factors, attributable to sex chromosomes or sex hormones, and due to gender-related factors, mainly related to different sociocultural behaviors. The present review summarizes the relevant facts regarding gender-related differences in vascular function in hypertension. Among sex-related factors, endogenous 17ß-estradiol plays a key role in protecting pre-menopausal women from vascular ageing. However, as vascular ageing (preceding and inducing hypertension) has a steeper increase in women than in men starting already from the third decade, it is likely that gender-related factors play a prominent role, especially in the young. Among gender-related factors, psychological stress (including that one related to gender-based violence and discrimination), depression, some psychological traits, but also low socioeconomic status, are more common in women than men, and their impact on vascular ageing is likely to be greater in women. Men, on the contrary, are more exposed to the vascular adverse consequences of alcohol consumption, as well as of social deprivation, while "toxic masculinity" traits may result in lower adherence to lifestyle and preventive strategies. Unhealthy diet habits are more prevalent in men and smoking is equally prevalent in the two sexes, but have a disproportional negative effect on women's vascular health. In conclusion, given the major and complex role of gender-related factors in driving vascular alterations and blood pressure patterns, gender dimension should be systematically integrated into future research on vascular function and hypertension and to tailor cardiovascular prevention strategies.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Affective temperaments (depressive, anxious, irritable, hyperthymic, and cyclothymic) are regarded as the stable core of personality and when present in their dominant form, are considered subclinical manifestations and high-risk states for various affective disorders. Furthermore, cumulating evidence supports their relationship with cardiovascular diseases. Our aim was to assess the association between affective temperaments and left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) in chronic hypertensive patients. METHODS In the present cross-sectional study, 296 patients referred to coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) due to suspected coronary artery disease were analyzed. All patients completed the Temperament Evaluation of Memphis, Pisa, Paris, and San Diego Autoquestionnaire (TEMPS-A). Left ventricular mass was quantified by CCTA and indexed to the body surface area (LVMi). Logistic regression analysis was used to identify predictors of LVH (men: ≥67.2 g/m2 and women: ≥54.7 g/m2). RESULTS Among our patient cohort (mean age: 59.4 ± 10.6, 44.9% female), the median LVM and LVMi were 115.5 [88.4-140.7] g and 58.4 [47.4-64.2] g/m2, respectively. Elevated BMI (OR = 1.04 CI: 1.01-1.10, p = 0.04) and cyclothymic affective temperament scores (OR = 1.06 CI: 1.00-1.12, p = 0.04) significantly increased the odds of LVH in multivariate logistic regression analysis. CONCLUSION Assessment of affective temperaments may allow for the identification of chronic hypertensive patients with elevated risk for LVH as a potential target for earlier primary intervention.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Affective temperaments are regarded as subclinical manifestations of major mood disorders and cumulating evidence suggest their role in cardiovascular (CV) pathology. We wished to analyze associations between affective temperaments and severe coronary artery disease (CAD), as assessed by coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA). METHODS 225 consecutive patients referred to CCTA due to suspected CAD were included. Medical history and demographic parameters were recorded and all patients completed the Temperament Evaluation of Memphis, Pisa, Paris, and San Diego Autoquestionnaire (TEMPS-A). The severity and extent of CAD was evaluated by CCTA. Logistic regression analysis was used to identify predictors of severe CAD (≥70% luminal stenosis in ≥1 major coronary artery). RESULTS According to multivariate logistic regression analysis, elevated hyperthymic affective temperament scores significantly decreased the odds of severe CAD (OR=0.92 CI: 0.84-1.00, p = 0.04), while independent positive associations were observed in case of dyslipidemia (OR=4.23 CI: 1.81-9.88, p = 0.001) and cyclothymic affective temperament scores (OR=1.12 CI: 1.02-1.23, p = 0.02). Furthermore, receiver operating curve (ROC) analysis was used to define ideal cutoff values. Hyperthymic temperament scores >11 (OR=0.41 CI: 0.19-0.90, p = 0.03), cyclothymic scores >7 (OR=3.23 CI: 1.35-7.76, p = 0.01) and irritable scores >6 (OR=2.79 CI: 1.17-6.69, p = 0.02) were also independently associated with severe CAD. LIMITATIONS Our study was limited by the cross-sectional design and the self-report nature of the questionnaires. CONCLUSIONS Evaluation of affective temperaments might help to identify patients with elevated risk for severe CAD and subsequent need for coronary intervention.

Abstract
Este estudo teve por objetivo realizar uma revisão integrativa de literaturapara verificar o que os estudos têm abordado sobre a relação entre estresse e ansiedade em pessoas hipertensas. Para tanto, o levantamento dos estudos foi realizado nas bases PsycINFO, Portal da Capes, Scielo e Medline BVS-PSI, utilizando os descritores ‘hipertensão arterial’ and ‘estresse’ and ‘ansiedade’, e seus correspondentes na língua inglesa ‘arterial hypertension’ and ‘stress’ and ‘anxiety’ e espanhola ‘hipertensión’and ‘estrés’ and ‘ansiedad’, considerando os últimos seis anos (2013 a 2018). Foram selecionados 14 estudos. Os resultados foram agrupados em três categorias: a) o impacto causado pelo diagnóstico de doenças crônicas não transmissíveis, b) fatores psicológicos associados à hipertensão arterial e c)relação saúde física versus saúde mental: uma questão também de método. Os resultados mostraram que ansiedade e estresse, além da depressão podem apresentar-se como aspectos moduladores da hipertensão arterial. Portanto, considera-se necessária a desmistificação da lógica cartesiana entre mente e corpo, para que sejam efetivadas ações de cuidado integral dos sujeitos e de promoção à saúde. Espera-se que os resultados obtidos reafirmem a importância de considerar os aspectos psicológicos e emocionais nas doenças crônicas e que estudos futuros com diferentes delineamentos sejam desenvolvidos na área da psicologia.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Poor medication adherence and disordered eating are major self-care problems in patients with type 2 diabetes that worsen glycemic control and increase the risk of developing severe diabetes complications. Affective temperament, which remains mostly unchanged throughout life, is speculated to predict poor treatment response and high comorbidity. The aim of this study was to explore the link between affective temperament and poor glycemic control due to insufficient self-care. METHODS This single-center case-control study involved 77 outpatients divided into the 'poor glycemic control' group (n = 52) and the 'better glycemic control' group (n = 25) based on their mean glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels over the past 12 months. All participants underwent one-on-one interviews during which they completed the following psychometric questionnaires: (1) the Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview 5.0.0; (2) the Temperament Evaluation of Memphis, Pisa, and San Diego Auto-questionnaire; (3) a researcher-designed single question for assessing subclinical stress-induced overeating; and (4) the Morisky Medication Adherence Scale. The difference between two continuous independent variables was determined using Student's t test. Discrete variables were compared using the Chi-square (χ2) or Fisher's exact test. Multiple testing corrections were performed using the false discovery rate. RESULTS Those outpatients in the poor glycemic control group exhibited significantly more stress-induced overeating (χ2 = 1.14, q statistic = 0.040) and poor medication adherence (t = 3.70, q = 0.034) than those in the better glycemic control group. However, there were no significant differences between the two groups in terms of affective temperaments, clinical eating disorders, or diabetes-specific distress. Patients with stress-induced overeating (t = - 2.99, p = 0.004) and poor medication adherence (t = - 4.34, p = 0.000) exhibited significantly higher scores for cyclothymic temperament than their counterparts. CONCLUSION Cyclothymic temperament is significantly associated with disordered eating and/or poor medication adherence in patients with type 2 diabetes and is possibly linked to poor glycemic control.

Abstract
Sex and gender are important modifiers of cardiovascular system physiology, pathophysiology, and disease development. The atherosclerosis process, together with the progressive loss of arterial elasticity with age, is a major factor influencing the development of overt cardiovascular, renal, and cerebrovascular disease. While differences between women and men in epidemiology and pathophysiology of vascular ageing are increasingly reported, sex-disaggregated data are still scarcely available for prospective studies. A better knowledge of sex differences in physiological ageing as well as in disease-related changes in vascular ageing trajectories is crucial to avoid misdiagnosis and mistreatment. This review presents key concepts and knowledge gaps identified in vascular ageing due to gonadal function, vascular physiology, pathophysiology, psychosocial factors, pregnancy, and prognostic relevance. Gender roles determine the effectiveness of any cardiovascular preventive strategy and acceptance for non-invasive or invasive diagnostics and therapeutics. Gender differences in health behaviour, also due to sociocultural norms conditioned by society, contribute to behaviours that may lead to premature arterial vascular ageing. These include differences in risk behaviours like smoking, diet, exercise, and in stress, but also conditions such as housing, noise pollution, poverty, disability, and any kind of stigmatisation. The VascAgeNet Gender Expert Group aims to advance the use of non-invasive vascular ageing measures in routine clinical settings by providing facts to fill in the gaps concerning sex and gender differences at each step of this process, and to search for solutions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The calculation of vascular age can help patients understand the importance of adherence to healthy lifestyle and medications. However, multiple methods are available to calculate vascular age and no comparison data is available yet. Our aim was to evaluate vascular age based on the Framingham Risk Score (FRS), the Systematic COronary Risk Evaluation (SCORE) and carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (PWV). METHODS Consecutive subjects between the age of 40-65 years, who took part in a screening program in three general practitioner practices were involved. PWV was measured by tonometry and was compared with normal values. Vascular age was defined based on FRS and SCORE according to literature data. RESULTS One hundred and seventy-two (172) patients were involved. The median chronological age was 55.5 (48.8-61.2) years. The median vascular age based on FRS and SCORE were 64 (54-79) years and 55 (44.2-60.7) years, respectively (p<0.05). Based on PWV, FRS and SCORE, 40.1%, 78.5% and 32% of the subjects had increased vascular age compared with chronological age, respectively (PWV+, FRS+, SCORE+, p<0.05). Fifty-eight (58) (84%) of the PWV+ subjects were also FRS+, and this proportion was high in case of SCORE+ patients as well (n=47, 85.4%). However, only moderate overlap was found between PWV+ and SCORE+ subjects as 17 (30.9%) of SCORE+ patients were also PWV+. CONCLUSION The differences found between the calculated vascular ages and the proportion of subjects with elevated vascular age warrants further detailed comparison of different vascular age calculation methods.

Abstract
How individuals respond to and cope with stress is linked with their health and well-being. It is presumed that early stress responsiveness helps shape the health of the developing organism, but the relationship between stress responsiveness and early immune function during development is not well-known. We hypothesized that stress responsiveness may shape epigenetic regulation of immune genes in infancy. We investigated whether aspects of behavioral responsiveness and hypothalamic-pituitary adrenal stress-response were associated with epigenome-wide immune cell DNA methylation patterns in 154 infant rhesus monkeys (3-4 months old). Infants' behavioral and physiological responses were collected during a standardized biobehavioral assessment, which included temporary relocation and separation from their mother and social group. Genome-wide DNA methylation was quantified using restricted representation bisulfite sequencing (RRBS) from blood DNA collected 2-hours post-separation. Epigenome-wide analyses were conducted using simple regression, multiple regression controlling for immune cell counts, and permutation regression, all corrected for false discovery rate. Across the variables analyzed, there were 20,368 unique sites (in 9,040 genes) at which methylation was significantly associated with at least one behavioral responsiveness or cortisol measure across the three analyses. There were significant associations in 442 genes in the Immune System Process ontology category, and 94 genes in the Inflammation mediated by chemokine and cytokine signaling gene pathway. Out of 35 candidate genes that were selected for further investigation, there were 13 genes with at least one site at which methylation was significantly associated with behavioral responsiveness or cortisol, including two intron sites in the glucocorticoid receptor gene, at which methylation was negatively correlated with emotional behavior the day following the social separation (Day 2 Emotionality; β = -0.39, q < 0.001) and cortisol response following a relocation stressor (Sample 1; β = -0.33, q < 0.001). We conclude that biobehavioral stress responsiveness may correlate with the developing epigenome, and that DNA methylation of immune cells may be a mechanism by which patterns of stress response affect health and immune functioning.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Affective temperaments (depressive, anxious, irritable, hyperthymic, cyclothymic) are regarded as the biologically stable core of personality. Accumulating data suggest their relationship with cardiovascular diseases. However, there are currently limited data on the association of affective temperaments and accelerated vascular aging. The aim of our study was to evaluate the relationship between affective temperaments and vascular age, as assessed by coronary artery calcium scoring (CACS). METHODS In our cross-sectional study, 209 consecutive patients referred to coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) due to suspected coronary artery disease (CAD) were included. All patients completed the Temperament Evaluation of Memphis, Pisa, Paris, and San Diego Autoquestionnaire (TEMPS-A) and the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). Vascular age was estimated using CACS and its difference from chronological age for each patient was calculated. Linear regression analysis was used to identify predictors of accelerated vascular aging in the entire cohort and in male and female sub-populations. RESULTS Besides traditional risk factors, cyclothymic temperament score proved to be an independent predictor of accelerated vascular aging in women (β = 0.89 [95%CI: 0.04-1.75]), while this association was absent in men. CONCLUSIONS Our results suggest that cyclothymic affective temperament is associated with accelerated vascular aging in women. Assessment of affective temperaments may potentiate more precise cardiovascular risk stratification of patients.

Abstract
The relationship between affective temperaments and migraine is not well studied to date. It is also uncertain whether some affective temperaments may predispose the migraine patients to major depression (MD). We hypothesized that migraine patients had more affective temperament traits than HCs, and certain affective temperament traits in migraine patients are associated with lifetime MD. The sample included fifty-eight female migraine patients and age-matched 55 healthy women. The migraine was diagnosed according to the third edition of International Classification of Headache Disorders (ICHD-III). Lifetime MD was determined by means of Structured Clinical Interview I for DSM-IV. Migraine Disability Assessment (MIDAS) Questionnaire was applied to participants to determine the impact of migraine on daily life. Affective temperamental traits were assessed through Temperament Evaluation of Memphis, Pisa, Paris and San Diego Auto-questionnaire. All affective temperament traits (p < .0001) and the rate of MD (p = .002) were significantly higher in migraine patients compared to HCs. Non-depressive migraine patients (n = 36) had significantly more hyperthymic temperament traits compared to depressive patients (n = 22) (p = .04). Specifically, depressive temperament traits were significantly associated with higher lifetime MD in female migraine patients (B = 0.196, Exp(B) = 1.216, p = .01). Our findings suggest that affective temperaments may predispose some women to migraine, and depressive temperament may have a casual role in the development of lifetime depression in migraine patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Potential routes whereby systemic inflammation, oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction may drive the development of endothelial dysfunction and atherosclerosis, even in an environment of low cholesterol, are examined. MAIN TEXT Key molecular players involved in the regulation of endothelial cell function are described, including PECAM-1, VE-cadherin, VEGFRs, SFK, Rho GEF TRIO, RAC-1, ITAM, SHP-2, MAPK/ERK, STAT-3, NF-κB, PI3K/AKT, eNOS, nitric oxide, miRNAs, KLF-4 and KLF-2. The key roles of platelet activation, xanthene oxidase and myeloperoxidase in the genesis of endothelial cell dysfunction and activation are detailed. The following roles of circulating reactive oxygen species (ROS), reactive nitrogen species and pro-inflammatory cytokines in the development of endothelial cell dysfunction are then described: paracrine signalling by circulating hydrogen peroxide, inhibition of eNOS and increased levels of mitochondrial ROS, including compromised mitochondrial dynamics, loss of calcium ion homeostasis and inactivation of SIRT-1-mediated signalling pathways. Next, loss of cellular redox homeostasis is considered, including further aspects of the roles of hydrogen peroxide signalling, the pathological consequences of elevated NF-κB, compromised S-nitrosylation and the development of hypernitrosylation and increased transcription of atherogenic miRNAs. These molecular aspects are then applied to neuroprogressive disorders by considering the following potential generators of endothelial dysfunction and activation in major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia: NF-κB; platelet activation; atherogenic miRs; myeloperoxidase; xanthene oxidase and uric acid; and inflammation, oxidative stress, nitrosative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction. CONCLUSIONS Finally, on the basis of the above molecular mechanisms, details are given of potential treatment options for mitigating endothelial cell dysfunction and activation in neuroprogressive disorders.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Patients with Crohn's disease have an increased aortic stiffness, a known cardiovascular risk factor. Anxiety, a key factor of the brain--gut axis in patients with Crohn's disease, is implicated in the pathogenesis and progression of the disease, and is linked with aortic stiffening in other clinical settings. OBJECTIVES Considering that depression is frequently linked to anxiety in Crohn's disease, we performed a mediation analysis to reveal the potential link between anxiety, depression and aortic stiffness in these patients. METHODS Multicentre observational cross-sectional study of 86 consecutive patients with Crohn's disease and 86 matched control individuals. The connections between anxiety, depression, disease duration, aortic pulse wave velocity (aPWV), brachial and central SBP were tested using partial least squares structural equations modelling. RESULTS In patients with Crohn's disease, anxiety (path coefficient: 0.220, P = 0.01) and disease duration (path coefficient: 0.270, P = 0.02) were associated with aPWV that in turn was associated with brachial SBP (path coefficient: 0.184, P = 0.03). These associations were even stronger in patients with active disease. The connection between anxiety and aPWV was in part mediated by central SBP (indirect effect: 0.090, P = 0.01; indirect-to-total effect ratio: 41%) as well as, in a pilot substudy, by sympathetic hyperactivity. Anxiety and depression were highly correlated in patients with Crohn's disease. Consequently, results were confirmed when anxiety was substituted by depression. CONCLUSION The connections of anxiety, depression and chronic inflammation with aPWV and SBP could suggest the first evidence of a brain--gut--vascular axis and new potential targets for therapy in patients with Crohn's disease.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The mechanism underlying the association between personality profile and subclinical atherosclerosis is poorly understood. This study explores the association between personality, carotid atherosclerosis and arterial stiffness, and the contribution of genes and environment to this association. METHODS Early atherosclerotic traits, including carotid intima-media thickness (CCA-IMT), aortic pulse wave velocity (PWVao) and heart rate, were assessed in 318 adult twins, who also completed a Big Five personality questionnaire. Using the co-twin control approach, the association between intra-pair differences in clinical and personality scores was assessed in dizygotic (DZ) and monozygotic (MZ) twins separately. RESULTS An association between CCA-IMT and extroverted personality, as well as between PWVao and openness to experience was detected. The inverse association between CCA-IMT and extraversion was persistent in DZ and disappeared in MZ twins, suggesting genetic confounding. In contrast, the association between PWVao and openness to experience was of the same magnitude in DZ and MZ twins, thus surviving the adjustment for genetic and shared environmental factors. CONCLUSIONS This study highlights that the association between some psychological factors and cardiovascular traits may be partly explained by genetic factors. This result may provide support for the feasibility of prevention programs based on assessing familiarity for personality disorders to detect genetic risk for subclinical cardiovascular disease.

Abstract
Affective temperaments (depressive, anxious, irritable, hyperthymic, and cyclothymic) are stable parts of personality and describe emotional reactivity to external stimuli. Their relation to psychopathological conditions is obvious, but less data are available on their relationship with cardiovascular disorders. The aim of this study was to evaluate affective temperaments and hemodynamic and arterial stiffness parameters in healthy subjects (Cont), in white-coat hypertensive (WhHT) patients, and in non-resistant (non-ResHT) and resistant hypertensive (ResHT) patients. In this cross-sectional study, 363 patients were included: 82 Cont, 44 WhHT, 200 non-ResHT, and 37 ResHT. The patients completed the Temperament Evaluation of Memphis, Pisa, Paris, and San Diego Autoquestionnaire (TEMPS-A), and arterial stiffness was examined with tonometry (PulsePen). Significant differences were found between the Cont, WhHT, non-ResHT and ResHT groups in pulse wave velocity (7.76 ± 0.96, 8.13 ± 1.39, 8.98 ± 1.25, and 10.18 ± 1.18 m/s, respectively, p < 0.05 between Cont and non-ResHT/ResHT; p < 0.05 between non-ResHT and ResHT). Cyclothymic affective temperament points (4 (2.25-8)) were higher (p < 0.05) in the ResHT group than in the Cont (2 (0-5)) and non-ResHT (3 (1-5)) groups. The cyclothymic temperament points of the WhHT group (4 (2-7)) were also higher than those in the Cont group. ResHT was independently associated with a cyclothymic scale score above 6 (beta = 2.59 (95% CI: 1.16-5.77)), an irritable scale score above 7 (beta = 3.17 (95% CI: 1.3-7.69)) and an anxious scale score above 9 (beta = 2.57 (95% CI: 1.08-6.13)) points. WhHT was also independently associated with cyclothymic scale scores above 6 points (beta = 2.378, 95% CI: 1.178-4.802). In conclusion, white-coat and ResHT patients have specific affective temperament patterns, and the evaluation of these patterns can help to understand the psychopathological background of these conditions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although a better understanding of the prodromes of affective disorders in youth has important clinical and research implications, empirical data are still unconclusive. Cyclothymic-hypersensitive temperament (CHT) has been linked to both depression and bipolarity, as well as to suicidality. Its conceptualization is still debated, as well as a comprehensive, psychometrically sound way of assessment. METHODS factor structure, reliability, measurement invariance, convergent and divergent validity of the previously published CHT questionnaire (a youth version derived from Temperament Evaluation in Memphis Pisa and San Diego (TEMPS) was assessed in a school-based sample of 2959 students aged from 10 to 14 years (mean age = 11.8 ± 0.97 years). Furthermore, accuracy, sensitivity and specificity were calculated for a new cut-off score related to the presence of general psychopathology symptoms. RESULTS CHT is better conceptualized in a two-correlated factors model, a moodiness/hypersensitiveness factor, more associated with internalizing symptoms, and an impulsiveness/emotional dysregulation factor, more associated with externalizing symptoms. The revised 22-items version of the CHT questionnaire with a cut-off score of 15 for females and 17 for males results accurate, sensitive and specific enough for the recognition of cyclothymic adolescents with clinical symptoms. LIMITATION the cross sectional design and the self-report nature of the measures limit the findings. DISCUSSION Cyclothymic-hypersensitive temperament is a relevant concept in the realm of affective disorder and can be reliably assessed in youths. It may describe youths with the coexistence of both internalizing and externalizing symptoms that can be difficult to diagnose with a DSM perspective.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Although numerous risk factors have been described, the effects of temperament, which is defined as a risk factor for certain disorders, on the outcome of patients undergoing rotator cuff surgery have not been investigated. HYPOTHESIS We investigated whether a relationship exists between affective temperament and the outcome of patients undergoing rotator cuff surgery. MATERIAL AND METHODS The outcomes of 176 patients undergoing rotator cuff surgery were examined using the Oxford and Constant questionnaires as well as visual analog scale values preoperatively and postoperatively. Inclusion criteria were defined as 1) dissatisfaction with pain despite 6 months of nonoperative treatment; 2) rotator cuff defects with full-thickness, small- to large-sized defects; 3) presence of a single dominant temperament or nondominant temperament; 4) no history of a diagnosed psychiatric disorder; and 5) a minimum of greater than 1 year of follow-up after surgery. Exclusion criteria were 1) other comorbid shoulder pathology; 2) irreparable or partial rotator cuff rupture; 3) grade 3 retractions; 4) grade 3-4 fatty infiltration; 5) other comorbid diseases such as diabetes, thyroid disorders, or inflammatory diseases; 6) history of shoulder surgery; 7) infection of the shoulder joint; 8) neurologic deficit in muscles around the shoulder; 9) two or more dominant temperaments; and 10) history of acromioclavicular joint resection and/or biceps tenodesis with cuff repair. All patient temperaments were evaluated according to the Temperament Evaluation of Memphis, Pisa, Paris and San Diego auto questionnaire version. RESULTS The mean follow-up time was 45.5 months. The outcomes of patients with depressive temperament were worse than of patients with a nondominant temperament. This situation was observed both preoperatively and postoperatively. However, a similar relationship between nondominant and anxious temperament groups was observed only postoperatively. CONCLUSION We noticed that depressive and anxious temperaments had a negative effect on patient outcomes after rotator cuff surgery; however, nondominant temperaments had a positive effect on patient outcomes. Abstract
Affective temperaments represent a biologically stable core of emotional reactivity and have previously been associated with hypertension and arterial stiffening. The age, when hypertension is initiated, is influenced by different factors, but the role of personality traits in this regard is not clarified yet. Our aim was to study the association between affective temperaments and the age at onset of hypertension. In this cross-sectional study, 353 patients were included. After the evaluation of history, patients completed the Temperament Evaluation of Memphis, Pisa, Paris and San Diego Autoquestionnaire. We used linear regression analysis to identify predictors of the age of onset of hypertension in the whole cohort and in male and female subpopulations. The independent predictors of the age at onset of hypertension were male sex (B = −4.57 (95% CI = −1.40 to −7.74)), smoking (B = −4.31 (−7.41 to −1.22)), and positive family history (B = −6.84 (−10.22 to −3.45)). In women, cyclothymic temperament score was an independent predictor of the initiation of hypertension (B = −0.83 (−1.54 to −0.12)), while this association was absent in men. Besides traditional factors, cyclothymic affective temperament might contribute to the earlier initiation of hypertension in women.

Abstract
Background Acupuncture is proved to be effective on hypertension by numerous studies and resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (Rs-fMRI) is a widely used technique to study its mechanism. Along with lower blood pressure, patients with hypertension receiving acupuncture also presented improvement in function of cognition, emotion, language, sematic sensation, and so on. This study was a primary study to explore the acting path of acupuncture at combined acupoints in stimulated brain areas related to such functions. Methods In this research, regional homogeneity (ReHo) was applied to analyze the Rs-fMRI image data of brain activities after acupuncture at LR3, KI3, and LR3+KI3 and to compare the differences of functional brain activities between stimulating combined acupoints and single acupoint under pathological conditions. A total of thirty hypertension patients underwent Rs-fMRI scanning before acupuncture treatment and then were randomly divided into three groups following random number table, the LR3 group (3 males and 7 females), the KI3 group (3 males and 7 females), and the LR3+ KI3 group (4 males and 6 females) for needling, respectively. When the 30-min treatment finished, they received a further Rs-fMRI scanning. The Rs-fMRI data before and after the acupuncture treatment were analyzed through ReHo. Results Compared with preacupuncture, respectively, ReHo values increased in Brodmann areas (BAs) 3, 18, and 40 and decreased in BAs 7 and 31 in LR3+ KI3 group. However, ReHo values only decreased in BA7 of KI3 group while the results showed no significant difference of brain regions in LR3 group between pre- and postacupuncture. Compared with LR3 group, LR3+KI3 group exhibited decreased ReHo values in BAs 7, 9, and 31. Meanwhile, compared with KI3 group, LR3+KI3 group exhibited increased ReHo values in the BAs 2, 18, 30, and 40 and decreased ReHo values in BA13. Conclusion Combined acupoints of LR3 and KI3 could act on wider brain areas than the sum of single acupoints, whose functions include emotional processing, cognition, somatic sensation, spatial orientation, language production, and vision.

Abstract
PURPOSE Functional voice disorders (FVD) are multifactorial and may have a significant impact on the patients' quality of life (QOL). The aim of this study was to explore and analyze the relationship between the VHI scores, psychological variables, and objective voice measurements, and to develop a psychological and/or vocal acoustic model for the overall self-perceived evaluation of quality of life for three different types of FVD. METHODS After ENT examination, 83 women were classified into three groups: psychogenic voice disorder (PVD = 39), primary muscle tension voice disorder (MTVD1 = 16), and secondary muscle tension voice disorder (MTVD2 = 28). All patients were evaluated according to a multidisciplinary assessment protocol, which included the self-evaluation of quality of life (Voice Handicap Index, VHI), psychological evaluation (Hamilton Rating Scales for Depression (HAM-D) and for Anxiety (HARS), and Temperament Evaluation of Memphis, Pisa, Paris and San Diego-Auto questionnaire (TEMPS-A)), and vocal acoustic analysis [mean fundamental frequency (F0, Hz), jitter (local, %), shimmer (local, %), and harmonic-to-noise ratio (HNR, dB)]. RESULTS Our findings revealed a moderate impact on QOL, regardless of the type of FVD. There were significant correlations between VHI scores, psychological variables, and voice perturbation parameters, with the exception of the MTVD1 and MTVD2 groups. The stepwise multiple linear regression analysis suggested that QOL could be explained by: anxious temperament together with shimmer in PVD group, jitter in the MTVD1 group, and depressive temperament in the MTVD2 group. CONCLUSIONS Affective temperaments and/or voice perturbation parameters were meaningful predictors of self-evaluation of quality of life in patients with different types of FVD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous studies investigating the risk of suicide in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) have reported conflicting results. This study evaluated suicide risk in PD and investigated the relationship between suicide risk and perceived disability, hopelessness and affective temperaments in PD. METHODS One-hundred and twenty PD patients were consecutively enrolled. The diagnosis of PD was based on clinical criteria. All patients underwent a psychiatric evaluation that included the administration of the Columbia-Suicide Severity Rating Scale, the Italian Perceived Disability Scale, the Beck Hopelessness Inventory and the TEMPS-A questionnaire. The results were compared with those of a control group of 91 patients affected by another chronic disease, ie, open angle glaucoma. RESULTS Parkinson's disease patients had higher suicidal ideation, higher perceived disability and lower hyperthymia than the control group. In PD, higher perceived disability was associated with higher current and lifetime suicidal ideation, lower hyperthymia, older age and higher scores on negative temperaments. Suicidal ideation, negative temperaments and hopelessness were risk factors for perceived disability, while hyperthymia was a protective factor for perceived disability. DISCUSSION Patients with PD have an increased risk of suicidal ideation. Increased suicidal ideation in PD is associated with the increased perceived disability. A psychiatric assessment that includes the investigation of suicide risk and perceived disability is recommended in patients with PD.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE A bidirectional relationship exists between psychiatric disorders and cardiovascular diseases, however less is known with regards to personality traits. Accumulating data suggest that affective temperaments are both associated with psychiatric and somatic diseases. The aim of our study was to evaluate the associations between different affective temperaments and the presence of coronary atherosclerosis. METHODS 200 consecutive patients referred to coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) due to suspected coronary artery disease (CAD) were included in our study. Medical history and demographic parameters were recorded and all patients completed the Temperament Evaluation of Memphis, Pisa, Paris, and San Diego Autoquestionnaire (TEMPS-A) and the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). The presence of coronary artery disease was evaluated based on the CCTA images. RESULTS 39 patients were free of any coronary atherosclerosis (CCTA-) and 161 had coronary atherosclerosis (CCTA+). Hyperthymic affective temperament score was higher in CCTA- subjects as compared to CCTA+ (13.1±3.0 vs 11.5±4.6, p=0.010, respectively). Hyperthymic affective temperament score showed a significant independent, inverse relationship with coronary atherosclerosis (OR: 0.91 CI: 0.82-0.99, p=0.04). CONCLUSION Our results suggest that hyperthymic affective temperament is independently associated with the absence of CAD. It requires further research to delineate the mechanism mediating the effect of hyperthymia on better coronary artery health and establishing potential biochemical or behavioral factors, both of which could be exploited for prevention and treatment purposes. But it is plausible, that the evaluation of affective temperaments have importance both in relation with psychiatric and cardiovascular disorders.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Psychiatric disorders are associated with a higher prevalence of cardiovascular disease and mortality. Regular exercise has been shown to reduce depressive symptoms and improve arterial stiffness as a biomarker of cardiovascular risk. We aimed to investigate the effects of different exercise modalities on depression severity index and arterial stiffness in patients suffering from unipolar depression. METHODS 34 patients suffering from unipolar depression [female: 25, male: 9, age: 37.8, Beck-Depression-Inventory-II (BDI-II) score: 31.0] were enrolled in this two-armed randomized controlled trial. Central hemodynamics, augmentation index at heart rate 75/min (AIx@75) and aortic pulse wave velocity (PWV) were obtained by an oscillometric monitoring device. Maximal bicycle ergometer exercise testing yielded maximal fitness parameters. Patients were assigned to either high-intensity low volume (HILV) or moderate continuous aerobic training (MCT). Both intervention groups trained three times a week during a 4-week intervention period. BDI-II were filled out by the patients before and after the intervention period. RESULTS We found moderate interaction effects on depression severity reduction [Formula: see text]. HILV showed a 85% beneficial effect in lowering BDI-II scores compared to MCT (HILV: pre: 28.8 (9.5), post: 15.5 (8.5), SMD = 1.48), MCT: (pre: 33.8 (8.5), post: 22.6 (7.5), SMD = 1.40). Reduction of AIx@75 was more pronounced after MCT (SMD = 0.61) compared to HILV (SMD = 0.08), showing 37% possibly beneficial effects of MCT over HILV. PWV remained unchanged in both training groups. CONCLUSION Both training regimes showed large effects on the reduction of depressive symptoms. While HILV was more effective in lowering depression severity, MCT was more effective in additionally lowering peripheral arterial stiffness. Exercise should be considered an important strategy for preventive as well as rehabilitative treatment in depression.
