Bibliometric analysis of global scientific activity on umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells: a swiftly expanding and shifting focus

Research trends in lipid-lowering therapies for coronary heart disease combined with hyperlipidemia: a bibliometric study and visual analysis

Background

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) poses a significant global health and economic challenge, with atherosclerosis being a primary cause. Over the past 40 years, substantial research has been conducted into the prevention and reversal of atherosclerosis, resulting in the development of lipid-lowering agents such as statins and fibrates. Despite the extensive literature and formulation of numerous therapeutic guidelines in this domain, a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of the current research landscape and trends has not been performed. This study aimed to elucidate the evolution and milestones of research into lipid-lowering treatments for coronary heart disease (CHD) in conjunction with hyperlipidemia through bibliometric analysis, offering insights into future directions for treatment strategies.

Methods

This study examined publications from 1986 to 2023 retrieved from the Web of Science database (Core Collection). Utilizing tools such as VOSviewer, Pajek, and CiteSpace, we analyzed publication and citation numbers, H-indexes, contributions by countries and institutions, authorship, journal sources, and keyword usage to uncover research trajectories and areas of focus.

Results

Our analysis of 587 publications revealed a recent surge in research output, particularly post-2003. The American Journal of Cardiology published the highest number of studies, with 40 articles, whereas Circulation received the highest number of citations (6,266). Key contributors included the United States, Japan, and China, with the United States leading in citation numbers and the H-index. Harvard University and Leiden University emerged as pivotal institutions, and Professors J. Wouter Jukema and Robert P. Giugliano were identified as leading experts. Keyword analysis disclosed five thematic clusters, indicating a shift in research towards new drug combinations and strategies, signaling future research directions.

Conclusion

The last 4 decades have seen a notable rise in publications on lipid-lowering therapies for CHD and hyperlipidemia, with the United States retaining world-leading status. The increase in international collaboration aids the shift towards research into innovative lipid-lowering agents and therapeutic approaches. PCSK9 inhibitors and innovative combination therapies, including antisense oligonucleotides and angiopoietin-like protein 3 inhibitors, provide avenues for future research, intending to maximize the safety and efficacy of treatment approaches.

A bibliometric analysis of the research landscape on vascular normalization in cancer

Tumor vascular normalization profoundly affects the advancement of cancer therapy. Currently, with the rapid increase in research on tumor vascular normalization, few analytical and descriptive studies have investigated the trends in its development, key research power, present research hotspots, and future outlooks. In this study, articles and reviews published between January 1, 2003, and October 29, 2022 were retrieved from Web of Science database. Subsequently, published research trends, countries/regions, institutions, authors, journals, references, and keywords were analyzed based on traditional bibliometric laws (such as Price's exponential growth, Bradford's, Lotka's, and Zipf's). Our results showed that the last two decades have seen an increase in tumor vascular normalization research. USA emerged as the preeminent contributor to the field, boasting the highest H-index and accruing the greatest quantity of publications and citations. Among institutions, Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard University made significant contributions, and Professor RK Jain was identified as a key leader in this field. Out of 583 academic journals, Cancer Research and Clinical Cancer Research published the most articles on vascular normalization. The research focal points in the field primarily include immunotherapy, tumor microenvironments, nanomedicine, and emerging frontier themes such as metabolism and mechanomedicine. Concurrently, the challenges of vascular normalization in cancer are discussed as well. In conclusion, the study presented a thorough analysis of the literature covering the past 20 years on vascular normalization in cancer, highlighting leading countries, institutions, authors, journals, and the emerging research focal points in this field. Future studies will advance the ongoing efforts in the field of tumor vascular normalization, aiming to enhance our ability to effectively manage and treat cancer.

What do we know about plastic pollution in Brazilian aquatic ecosystems?

Due to the increasing use and inadequate disposal of plastic by humans, aquatic environments have become receptacles for pollutants such as plastic. This study aimed to perform an analysis of plastic particles pollution in Brazilian aquatic ecosystems with special attention to inland aquatic environments and fish in order to identify information gaps in this field. Manuscripts published in the last 21 years and indexed in the Web of Science database were consulted. A total of 185 met the proposed inclusion criteria, such as having empirical data, being conducted in Brazil, and dealing with plastic pollution. In general, the number of studies increases over the years, and this increasing number of publications is accompanied by declared financial support; the Southeast and Northeast regions are the regions that publish the most on the topic, with São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and Pernambuco being the main states; the main focus of the studies is the detection of plastic particles mainly in biota (51%) and sediment (34%), and the most frequent ecosystem is the marine (89%); regarding the taxa, the majority is about plastic detection in fish (75%). Only 18% of the papers studying fishes consider their bio-ecological data, and only 17% of the manuscripts carried out the chemical characterization of the particles. However, 99% of the papers considered the shape of the plastic particle. We emphasize the need for more research and grants for studies with Brazilian inland aquatic ecosystems on the effects of plastic particle pollution on freshwater fish. Regional and national research funding agencies are very important to encourage an increase in the number of grants and specific calls for studies on plastic pollution and its impact on freshwater biota, considering the different macro-regions in Brazil, especially in the northern region.

Global scientific trends in healthy aging in the early 21st century: A data-driven scientometric and visualized analysis

Background

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), healthy aging is the process of developing and maintaining the functional capacity for health in old age. A rapidly growing number of research studies on healthy aging have been conducted worldwide. The purpose of this research work is to explore global scientific landscape of healthy aging research over the last 22 years.

Methods

Scientific publications on healthy aging from January 1, 2000 to October 11, 2022 were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) on October 11, 2022. A total of 6420 publications were included in the scientometric analysis. VOSviewer (1.6.18) was used to conduct scientometric and visualized analysis.

Results

The publication growth rate was 35.68 from 2000 to 2021. The United States of America (USA) led in both productivity and citations. PROCEEDINGS OF THE NATIONAL ACADEMY OF SCIENCES OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA was prominent in terms of both the highest citation count and the highest average citation count. The National Institute on Aging (NIA) and Evans, Michele K. were the most influential organization and author, respectively. Research hotspots in healthy aging were identified based on the co-occurrence analysis of keywords: (1) physical activity and mental health of older adults; (2) diseases impacting the health and lifespan of older adults; and (3) neuroscience. Our analysis indicates that gut microbiota, loneliness, frailty, mitochondria and resilience were the emerging themes in healthy aging research.

Conclusions

The quantity of annual publications on healthy aging has rapidly increased over the past 22 years, especially during 2018-2021. This analysis identified the status, trends, hot topics, and frontiers of healthy aging research. These findings will help researchers quickly understand the global representation of healthy aging research, influence resource dissemination, promote international collaborations, guide policy formulation, and improve health services for older adults.

Bibliometric Analysis of Stem Cells in Ischemic Stroke (2001-2022): Trends, Hotspots and Prospects

Background: Ischemic stroke is a common cerebrovascular accident with a high risk of neurological deficits. Stem cell therapy has progressively attracted the interest of scientists and clinicians due to the benefits of promoting neural regeneration and regulating the microenvironment surrounding the lesion after ischemic stroke. Our study aimed to evaluate the development trends and research hotspots in the field of stem cells and ischemic stroke. Materials and methods: Publications related to stem cells and ischemic stroke were retrieved from the Web of Science from 2001 to 2022. Data analysis and mapping were performed using VOSviewer, Citespace and ImageGP. Results: In total, 1932 papers were included in the analysis. Publications have steadily increased over the past 22 years. China has contributed the maximum number of publications, whereas the USA ranked first in the total number of citations and was considered the center of the international collaboration network. University of South Florida, Henry Ford Hospital, and Oakland University were the most influential institutions. Stroke, Brain Research, and Neural Regeneration Research were the most productive journals. The research in this field was primarily focused on the effects of stem cells on neurogenesis, inflammation, and angiogenesis following ischemic stroke, as well as their therapeutic potential for the disease. In addition, neural stem cells and mesenchymal stem cells are the most commonly utilized stem cells. The topics related to miRNA, extracellular vesicles, exosomes, mesenchymal stem cells, neuroinflammation, and autophagy are current research hotspots. Conclusion: Our bibliometric study provides a novel perspective on the research trends in the field of stem cells and ischemic stroke. The outcome of this study may benefit scientists to identify research hotspots and development directions, thereby advancing the application of stem cell-based therapy for ischemic stroke.

Global research trends in immunotherapy for glioma: a comprehensive visualization and bibliometric analysis

Background

Glioma is a prevalent and lethal brain malignancy; despite current treatment options, the prognosis remains poor. Therefore, immunotherapy has emerged as a promising therapeutic strategy. However, research trends and hotspots in glioma immunotherapy have not been systematically analyzed. This study aimed to elucidate global research trends and knowledge structures regarding immunotherapy for glioma using bibliometric analysis.

Methods

Publications related to immunotherapy for glioma from 2000-2023 were retrieved from Web of Science Core Collection database (WoSCC). We conducted quantitative analysis and visualization of research trends using various tools, including VOSviewer (1.6.18), CiteSpace (5.7 R3), Microsoft Charticulator, and the Bibliometrix package in R.

Results

A total of 4910 publications were included. The number of annual publications exhibited an obvious upward trend since 2019. The USA was the dominant country in terms of publication output and centrality. Frontiers in Immunology published the most articles. Harvard Medical School ranked first in productivity among institutions. Sampson, John H. Ph.D. is the most prolific author in the field with 88 articles and a total of 7055 citations. Clinical Cancer Research has the largest total number and impact factor. Analysis of keywords showed immunotherapy, glioblastoma, immunotherapy, and clinical trials as hot topics. The tumor microenvironment, cell death pathways, chimeric antigen receptor engineering, tumor-associated macrophages, and nivolumab treatment represent indicating shifts in the direction of future glioma immunotherapy development.

Conclusion

This bibliometric analysis systematically delineated global landscapes and emerging trends in glioma immunotherapy research. This study highlighted the prominence of Chimeric Antigen Receptor T-cell (CAR-T), Programmed Death-1 (PD-1), and nivolumab in current glioma immunotherapy research. The growing emphasis on specific neoantigens and prognostic tumor markers suggests potential avenues for future exploration. Furthermore, the data underscores the importance of strengthened international collaboration in advancing the field.

Extracellular vesicles from human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells prevent steroid-induced avascular necrosis of the femoral head via the PI3K/AKT pathway

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) secreted by human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (hucMSC) have excellent therapeutic potential for many diseases. The aim of this study was to define the role of hucMSC-EVs in the prevention and treatment of steroid-induced avascular necrosis of the femoral head (SANFH). After establishing the SANFH rat model, the effects of hucMSC-EVs were assessed by measuring the microstructure of the femoral head using HE staining, micro-computed tomography (micro-CT), and TUNEL staining. The administration of hucMSC-EVs caused a significant reduction to glucocorticoids (GCs)-induced osteoblast apoptosis and empty lacuna of the femoral head, while effectively improving the microstructure. HucMSC-EVs rescued the deactivation of the phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K)/protein kinase B (AKT) signaling pathway induced by GCs, and reversed the proliferation and migration of osteoblasts inhibited by GCs. In addition, hucMSC-EVs attenuated the inhibitory effects of GCs on rat osteoblast osteogenesis, angiogenesis of endothelial cells, and prevented osteoblast apoptosis. However, the promoting effects of hucMSC-EVs were abolished following the blockade of PI3K/AKT on osteoblasts. hucMSC-EVs were found to prevent glucocorticoid-induced femoral head necrosis in rats through the PI3K/AKT pathway.

Umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cell-derived apoptotic extracellular vesicles ameliorate cutaneous wound healing in type 2 diabetic mice via macrophage pyroptosis inhibition

BACKGROUND

Delayed healing of diabetic cutaneous wounds is one of the most common complications of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), which can bring great distress to patients. In diabetic patients, macrophages accumulate around skin wounds and produce NLRP3 (NOD-, LRR-, and pyrin domain-containing protein 3) inflammasomes, which in turn undergo pyroptosis and produce inflammatory factors such as interleukin-1β that affect wound healing. Although our previous study revealed that apoptotic extracellular vesicles (ApoEVs) produced from mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) improve cutaneous wound healing in normal C57BL/6 mice, whether ApoEVs can also improve diabetic wound healing remains unclear.

METHODS

Umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (UCMSCs) were cultured in vitro and apoptosis was induced. ApoEVs were extracted and identified and used in a T2DM mouse cutaneous wound model to evaluate the efficacy. The inhibitory effect of ApoEVs on macrophage pyroptosis was verified in vivo and in vitro, and the level of oxidative stress in macrophages was assessed to explore the mechanism by which ApoEVs play a role.

RESULTS

UCMSC-derived ApoEVs improved skin defect healing in T2DM mice. Moreover, UCMSC-derived ApoEVs inhibited macrophage pyroptosis in T2DM mice in vivo as well as in vitro under high-glucose culture conditions. In addition, we demonstrated that ApoEVs reduce oxidative stress levels, which is a possible mechanism by which they inhibit macrophage pyroptosis.

CONCLUSIONS

Our study confirmed that local application of UCMSC-derived ApoEVs improved cutaneous wound healing in T2DM mice. ApoEVs, as products of MSC apoptosis, can inhibit macrophage pyroptosis and regulate the death process by decreasing the level of oxidative stress.

Bibliometric analysis of trends in cardiac aging research over the past 20 years

BACKGROUND

In recent years, many studies have addressed cardiac aging and related diseases. This study aims to understand the research trend of cardiac aging and find new hot issues.

METHODS

We searched the web of science core collection database for articles published between 2003 and 2022 on the topic of "cardiac aging." Complete information including keywords, publication year, journal title, country, organization, and author were extracted for analysis. The VOS viewer software was used to generate network maps of keywords, countries, institutions, and author relationships for visual network analysis.

RESULTS

A total of 1002 papers were analyzed in the study. Overall, the number of annual publications on cardiac aging has increased since 2009, and new hot topics are emerging. The top 3 countries with the most publications were the United States (471 articles), China (209 articles) and Italy (101 articles). The University of Washington published the most papers (35 articles). The cluster analysis with author as the keyword found that the connections among different scholars are scattered and clustered in a small range. Network analysis based on keyword co-occurrence and year of publication identified relevant features and trends in cardiac aging research. According to the results of cluster analysis, all the articles are divided into 4 topics: "mechanisms of cardiac aging", "prevention and treatment of cardiac aging", "characteristics of cardiac aging", and "others." In recent years, the mechanism and treatment of cardiac aging have attracted the most attention. In both studies, animal models are used more often than in human populations. Mitochondrial dysfunction, autophagy and mitochondrial autophagy are hotspots in current research.

CONCLUSION

In this study, bibliometric analysis was used to analyze the research trend of cardiac aging in the past 20 years. The mechanism and treatment of cardiac aging are the most concerned contents. Mitochondrial dysfunction, autophagy and mitophagy are the focus of future research on cardiac aging.

A swift expanding trend of extracellular vesicles in spinal cord injury research: a bibliometric analysis

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) in the field of spinal cord injury (SCI) have garnered significant attention for their potential applications in diagnosis and therapy. However, no bibliometric assessment has been conducted to evaluate the scientific progress in this area. A search of articles in Web of Science (WoS) from January 1, 1991, to May 1, 2023, yielded 359 papers that were analyzed using various online analysis tools. These articles have been cited 10,842 times with 30.2 times per paper. The number of publications experienced explosive growth starting in 2015. China and the United States led this research initiative. Keywords were divided into 3 clusters, including "Pathophysiology of SCI", "Bioactive components of EVs", and "Therapeutic effects of EVs in SCI". By integrating the average appearing year (AAY) of keywords in VoSviewer with the time zone map of the Citation Explosion in CiteSpace, the focal point of research has undergone a transformative shift. The emphasis has moved away from pathophysiological factors such as "axon", "vesicle", and "glial cell" to more mechanistic and applied domains such as "activation", "pathways", "hydrogels" and "therapy". In conclusions, institutions are expected to allocate more resources towards EVs-loaded hydrogel therapy and the utilization of innovative materials for injury mitigation.

Knowledge structure and hotspots research of glioma immunotherapy: a bibliometric analysis

Background

Glioma is the most common primary brain tumor. Traditional treatments for glioma include surgical resection, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and bevacizumab therapy, but their efficacies are limited. Immunotherapy provides a new direction for glioma treatment. This study aimed to summarize the knowledge structure and research hotspots of glioma immunotherapy through a bibliometric analysis.

Method

Publications pertaining to glioma immunotherapy published during the period from 1st January 1990 to 27th March 2023 were downloaded from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC). Bibliometric analysis and visualization were performed using the CiteSpace, VOSviewer, Online Analysis Platform of Literature Metrology, and R software. The hotspots and prospects of glioma immunotherapy research were illustrated via analyzing the countries, institutions, journals, authors, citations and keywords of eligible publications.

Results

A total of 1,929 publications pertaining to glioma immunotherapy in 502 journals were identified as of 27th March 2023, involving 9,505 authors from 1,988 institutions in 62 countries. Among them were 1,285 articles and 644 reviews. Most of publications were produced by the United States. JOURNAL OF NEURO-ONCOLOGY published the majority of publications pertaining to glioma immunotherapy. Among the authors, Lim M contributed the largest number of publications. Through analyzing keyword bursts and co-cited references, immune-checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) were identified as the research focus and hotspot.

Conclusion

Using a bibliometric analysis, this study provided the knowledge structure and research hotspots in glioma immunotherapy research during the past 33 years, with ICIs staying in the current and future hotspot. Our findings may direct the research of glioma immunotherapy in the future.

Bacillus thuringiensis pesticidal toxins: A global analysis based on a scientometric study (1980-2021)

Several studies have been conducted on Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) pesticidal toxins due to their successful environmentally friendly biopesticide activity against various insect pest orders, protozoa, mites, and nematodes. However, no existing study has systematically examined the trends and evolution of research on Bt pesticidal toxins from a scientometric perspective. This study aimed to analyze the trends and hotspots of global research in this field. 5757 publications on Bt pesticidal toxins were extracted from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoS) from 1980 to 2021. Statistical and scientometric analyses were performed using Excel, CiteSpace, and VOSviewer visualization tools to evaluate research evolution, journal contribution and subject categories, contributing countries and institutions, highly influential references, and most used author keywords. The 5757 publications featured in 917 journals spanning 116 subject categories. The top 5 subject categories ranked as Entomology, Biotechnology & Applied Microbiology, Microbiology, Biochemistry & Molecular Biology, and Agriculture. Out of these publications, the USA contributed the most, with 1562 publications, 72,754 citations, and 46.58 average citations per paper (ACPP); however, Belgium had the highest (106.43) ACPP among the top 20 contributing countries. The Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences is the leading institution with 298 publications and 21.20 ACPP. The Pasteur Institute is ranked first (90.04) in terms of ACPP. Keywords analyses revealed that recent studies are inclined toward the evolution of insect resistance against Bt toxins. In future, studies related to the development of resistance mechanisms by insects against Bt pesticidal toxins and ways to overcome them will likely receive more attention. This study highlights the past and current situations and prospective directions of Bt pesticidal toxins-related research.

Bibliometric analysis on research trends for contribution of photodynamic therapy in periodontitis

BACKGROUND

The objective of this bibliometric was to ascertain the research trend regarding the application of photodynamic therapy as a treatment modality for periodontal disease.

METHODS

An online search was administered using the Scopus database to retrieve all the relevant research literature published from 2003 till 26^th Dec 2022. After applying the inclusion criteria articles pertinent to the topic were manually selected. Data was saved as CSV. Data was read using VOSviewer software and further analysis was performed using Microsoft excel.

RESULTS

From a total of 545 articles, 117 scientific papers relevant to the field were evaluated. The keen interest of researchers was identified by an increase in the number of publications over the course of time, with the highest citations n=827 attained during the year 2009. Brazil, India, and USA made significant contribution by publishing highest number of papers. Organizations from the USA produced the highest publications which attained high citations. Author Sculean A. published the highest number of papers. Journal of periodontology was the leading journal, by publishing highest number of papers (n=15), followed by Journal of Clinical Periodontology.

CONCLUSION

This bibliometric analysis provided detailed information regarding the total number of publications from 2003 to 2022 and the number of citations attained. Brazil has been identified as the leading country, whilst all the leading organizations which contributed significantly, were from USA. The Journal of Periodontology published the highest number of papers which had been highly cited. Sculean A, affiliated with University of Bern, Switzerland published the highest number of papers.

Bibliometric analysis of electroencephalogram research in mild cognitive impairment from 2005 to 2022

Background

Electroencephalogram (EEG), one of the most commonly used non-invasive neurophysiological examination techniques, advanced rapidly between 2005 and 2022, particularly when it was used for the diagnosis and prognosis of mild cognitive impairment (MCI). This study used a bibliometric approach to synthesize the knowledge structure and cutting-edge hotspots of EEG application in the MCI.

Methods

Related publications in the Web of Science Core Collection (WosCC) were retrieved from inception to 30 September 2022. CiteSpace, VOSviewer, and HistCite software were employed to perform bibliographic and visualization analyses.

Results

Between 2005 and 2022, 2,905 studies related to the application of EEG in MCI were investigated. The United States had the highest number of publications and was at the top of the list of international collaborations. In terms of total number of articles, IRCCS San Raffaele Pisana ranked first among institutions. The Clinical Neurophysiology published the greatest number of articles. The author with the highest citations was Babiloni C. In descending order of frequency, keywords with the highest frequency were “EEG,” “mild cognitive impairment,” and “Alzheimer’s disease”.

Conclusion

The application of EEG in MCI was investigated using bibliographic analysis. The research emphasis has shifted from examining local brain lesions with EEG to neural network mechanisms. The paradigm of big data and intelligent analysis is becoming more relevant in EEG analytical methods. The use of EEG to link MCI to other related neurological disorders, and to evaluate new targets for diagnosis and treatment, has become a new research trend. The above-mentioned findings have implications in the future research on the application of EEG in MCI.

A glimpse of research cores and frontiers on the relationship between long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) and colorectal cancer (CRC) using the VOSviewer tool

As lncRNAs are essential participants in colorectal carcinogenesis. This study aimed to use the VOSviewer tool to access the research cores and frontiers on the relationship between lncRNAs and CRC. Our findings showed that the mechanism of lncRNA in the occurrence and development of CRC was the core theme of the field. (1) Immunotherapy and immune microenvironment of CRC and lncRNAs, (2) CRC and lncRNAs in exosomes and (3) CRC and lncRNA-targeted therapy might represent three research frontiers. A comprehensive understanding of their existing mechanisms and the search for new regulatory paradigms are the core topics of future research. This knowledge will also help us select appropriate targeting methods and select appropriate preclinical models to promote clinical translation and ultimately achieve precise treatment of CRC.

Immunomodulatory role of mesenchymal stem cell therapy in liver fibrosis

Liver fibrosis is a fibrogenic and inflammatory process that results from hepatocyte injury and is characterized by hepatic architectural distortion and resultant loss of liver function. There is no effective treatment for advanced fibrosis other than liver transplantation, but it is limited by expensive costs, immune rejection, and postoperative complications. With the development of regenerative medicine in recent years, mesenchymal stem cell (MSCs) transplantation has become the most promising treatment for liver fibrosis. The underlying mechanisms of MSC anti-fibrotic effects include hepatocyte differentiation, paracrine, and immunomodulation, with immunomodulation playing a central role. This review discusses the immune cells involved in liver fibrosis, the immunomodulatory properties of MSCs, and the immunomodulation mechanisms of MSC-based strategies to attenuate liver fibrosis. Meanwhile, we discuss the current challenges and future directions as well.

Bibliometric and visualized analysis of sodium-Glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors

Background: Sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors have proved to be extremely effective and reliable in reducing hyperglycemia, and have also been used for the treatment of cardiovascular and renal disease in patients with or without type 2 diabetes. Thousands of research articles on SGLT2 inhibitors have been published in the past, but few bibliometric analyses have systematically been studied this field. We aimed to visualize the global research hotspots and trends of SGLT2 inhibitors using a bibliometric analysis to provide new evidence and ideas for researchers and clinicians in this field. Methods: We retrieved publications from Science Citation Index Expanded of Web of Science Core Collection in 2004-2022 on 1 July 2022. Microsoft Excel, CiteSpace and VOSviewer were employed to collect publication data, analyze publication trends, and visualize relevant results. Results: We identified 4,419 original research articles on SGLT2 inhibitors published between 2004 and the first half of 2022. Global SGLT2 inhibitors-related research increased rapidly from 2004 to 2022, especially recently. United States made the greatest contribution to the topic, with (1,629, 36.86%) publications and citations (88,892). AstraZeneca was the most prolific institutions (272, 6.16%). Heerspink HJL published the most related articles (98), whereas Zinman B was cited the most frequently (1,784 citations). Diabetes Obesity and Metabolism was the journal with the most studies (406, 9.19%), and The New England Journal of Medicine was the most commonly cited journal (11,617 citations), with nine of the top 10 co-cited references published in this journal. The emerging keywords "heart failure," "diabetic cardiomyopathy," "ejection fraction," "mortality," "biomarker," "fibrosis," "ampk," and "guideline" appeared the most recently as research frontiers. Conclusion: United States is the leader in SGLT2 inhibitor research. Recently, the research on SGLT2 inhibitors has focused on clinical trials, related mechanisms, and therapy. In the future, the research on SGLT2 inhibitors will delve into molecular mechanisms, especially those related to fibrosis and AMPK, revealing the link between SGLT2 inhibitors and heart failure and diabetic cardiomyopathy will be the next research hotspot.

The status and trends of mitochondrial dynamics research: A global bibliometric and visualized analysis

BACKGROUND

Mitochondria are remarkably dynamic organelles encapsulated by bilayer membranes. The dynamic properties of mitochondria are critical for energy production.

AIMS

The aim of our study is to investigate the global status and trends of mitochondrial dynamics research and predict popular topics and directions in the field.

METHODS

Publications related to the studies of mitochondrial dynamics from 2002 to 2021 were retrieved from Web of Science database. A total of 4,576 publications were included. Bibliometric analysis was conducted by visualization of similarities viewer and GraphPadPrism 5 software.

RESULTS

There is an increasing trend of mitochondrial dynamics research during the last 20 years. The cumulative number of publications about mitochondrial dynamics research followed the logistic growth model [Formula: see text]. The USA made the highest contributions to the global research. The journal Biochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA)-Molecular Cell Research had the largest publication numbers. Case Western Reserve University is the most contributive institution. The main research orientation and funding agency were cell biology and HHS. All keywords related studies could be divided into three clusters: "Related disease research", "Mechanism research" and "Cell metabolism research".

CONCLUSIONS

Attention should be drawn to the latest popular research and more efforts will be put into mechanistic research, which may inspire new clinical treatments for the associated diseases.

Transplantation of Umbilical Cord-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells Attenuates Surgical Wound-Induced Blood-Brain Barrier Dysfunction in Mice

Blood-brain barrier (BBB) is the most important component of central nervous system (CNS) to keep toxins and pathogens from CNS. Although our studies demonstrated that using interleukin-6 antibodies (IL-6-AB) reversed the increased permeability of BBB, IL-6-AB is limited in their application that only could be used a few hours before surgery and seemed delayed the surgical wounds healing process, which urges us to find another more effective method. In this study, we employed the C57BL/6J female mice to investigate the potential effects of umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells (UC-MSCs) transplantation on BBB dysfunction induced by surgical wound. Compared to IL-6-AB, the transplantation of UC-MSCs more effectively decreased the BBB permeability after surgical wound evaluated by dextran tracer (immunofluorescence imaging and luorescence quantification). In addition, UC-MSCs can largely decrease the ratio of proinflammatory cytokine IL-6 to the anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10 in both serum and brain tissue after surgical wound. Moreover, UC-MSCs successfully increased the levels of tight junction proteins (TJs) in BBB such as ZO-1, Occludin, and Claudin-5 and extremely decreased the level of matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9). Interestingly, UC-MSCs treatment also had positive effects on wound healing while protecting the BBB dysfunction induced by surgical wound compared to IL-6-AB treatment. These findings suggest that UC-MSCs transplantation is a highly efficient and promising approach on protecting the integrity of BBB which caused by peripheral traumatic injuries.

Engineering Dental Tissues Using Biomaterials with Piezoelectric Effect: Current Progress and Future Perspectives

Dental caries and traumatic injuries to teeth may cause irreversible inflammation and eventual death of the dental pulp. Nevertheless, predictably, repair and regeneration of the dentin-pulp complex remain a formidable challenge. In recent years, smart multifunctional materials with antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and pro-regenerative properties have emerged as promising approaches to meet this critical clinical need. As a unique class of smart materials, piezoelectric materials have an unprecedented advantage over other stimuli-responsive materials due to their inherent capability to generate electric charges, which have been shown to facilitate both antimicrobial action and tissue regeneration. Nonetheless, studies on piezoelectric biomaterials in the repair and regeneration of the dentin-pulp complex remain limited. In this review, we summarize the biomedical applications of piezoelectric biomaterials in dental applications and elucidate the underlying molecular mechanisms contributing to the biological effect of piezoelectricity. Moreover, we highlight how this state-of-the-art can be further exploited in the future for dental tissue engineering.

Stem cell therapy for type 1 diabetes: a scientometric assessment of global research during the twenty-first century

Purpose

We aimed to provide a scientometric assessment of global research in stem cell therapy (SCT) for type 1 diabetes (T1D) during 1999-2020.

Methods

The published data on SCT in T1D were retrieved from Elsevier's Scopus database and analyzed using select bibliometric tools. We used VOSviewer software and the Biblioshiny app to construct and visualize bibliometric networks.

Results

The global yield totaled 1806 publications in the 22-year study period, registering a 17.7% annual growth peaking at 196.9% in the last 11 years. The average citations per publication (CPP) decreased from 62.0 during 1999-2009 to 24.3 during 2010-2020. The funded publications were 727 (40.2%). Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were only 2.4% (45). Amongst 70 participating countries, the USA led with a 38.6% share. Of the 388 global organizations, Harvard Medical School, USA, San Raffaele Scientific Institute, Italy, and the University of Florida, USA were the topmost contributors. Florina, Couri, and Trucco were the top productive authors, whereas Melton, Abdi, and Simoes were the most impactful. Only 129 (3.1%) publications were highly-cited; their total and average CPP were 31,228 and 214.0 (range 101-1841), respectively.

Conclusions

The quantity of research in SCT for T1D has increased during the last two decades while the quality has dipped. The research landscape is dominated by high-income North-American and Western-European countries. There is a need for conducting large-scale RCTs and promoting research collaborations between high- and low-income countries for long-term sustainability and global impact.

Global trends in smoking cessation research from 2002 to 2021: A bibliometric and visual analysis

Our study is the first bibliometric and visual analysis on smoking cessation research of the past two decades.

Our study identifies productive countries/regions, institutions, authors, journals, and reveals a global network of collaborations of smoking cessation research.

The Co-occurrence Analysis of Keywords shed lights on the research frontier, trends and hot topics on smoking cessation research.

This study aimed to analyze the scientific outputs of smoking cessation research and explore its hotspots and frontiers from 2002 to 2021, using bibliometric methods. We use the core collection of Web of Science as a data source, and apply bibliometric methods to visually analyze articles published in smoking cessation research from 2002 to 2021, including publication year, countries/regions, journals, authors, institutions, and keywords. The VOSviewer (1.6.16) tool was used for the analysis. A total of 8797 articles related to smoking cessation research were identified. The USA was the leading contributor with 4671 publications. NICOTINE＆TOBACCO RESEARCH contributed the most publications (528), with the most citations (13746) and the highest H-index (59). The most contributing institutions were the University College London and University of California San Francisco. Robert West was most productive author. We found active collaborations among both productive authors and productive institutions. There were five hot topics in smoking cessation research: (1) Public health harm from tobacco; (2) The role of e-health in smoking cessation; (3) Role of primary health care in eliminating tobacco dependence; (4) Nicotine replacement therapy and pharmacotherapy; (5) The biological and clinical understanding of addiction. Our current study showed a growing trend in smoking cessation based on the number of published articles over the last 20 years. There was active cooperation between institutions, and authors. Electronic cigarettes, mHealth, eHealth, public health and mental health are foci of new and emerging research.

Knowledge mapping of targeted immunotherapy for myasthenia gravis from 1998 to 2022: A bibliometric analysis

Background

The treatment of myasthenia gravis (MG) has advanced from steroids and traditional immunosuppressants to targeted immunotherapy. Targeted immunotherapy has been successfully employed in clinical practice in recent years. This study aimed to explore the emerging trend of targeted immunotherapy in MG and summarize the knowledge structure through bibliometric methods.

Methods

The Web of Science Core Collection database (WoSCC) was chosen to retrieve the literature on targeted immunotherapy for MG. Two bibliometric analysis software, VOSviewer and CiteSpace, and bibliometric online platform were mainly used to evaluate the contributions from countries/regions, institutions, journals, and authors through the construction and visualization of bibliometric networks. By systematically reviewing a knowledge domain, future research developments were determined. The R version 4.1.2 and Microsoft Excel 365 were used for statistical analysis.

Results

A total of 562 original articles and 262 reviews relevant to MG targeted immunotherapy were included. The number of publications on targeted immunotherapy for MG exhibited a two-phase advancement. The first stage showed a steady growth trend from 1998 to 2016, with an annual number of no more than 35 publications. The second stage revealed an explosive growth trend from 2017, reaching a peak number of publications in 2020. The United States ranked first in the number of publications, citations, and h-index. The author with the highest citation and h-index was Vincent A. And 28.03% of the articles were published in the top 10 journals. In addition to “myasthenia gravis”, the keyword with the highest consideration was “rituximab”, followed by “double-blind”, which indicate research hotspots gradually from basic research to clinical research over time, especially in the field of targeted immunotherapy. The MG treatment has entered a personalized precision treatment phase. Exploration into new target molecules and conducting high-quality randomized controlled trials on existing biological agents are the further research direction.

Conclusion

The current study summarized the global research trends concerning targeted immunotherapy for MG. Research interests gradually advanced from basic research to clinical research. MG treatment has entered a personalized precision treatment phase. Further investigations into new target molecules and high-quality randomized controlled trials on existing biological agents are required urgently to direct future immunotherapy research.

Research focus and theme trend on fulminant myocarditis: A bibliometric analysis

Aims

This study intends to explore the research focus and trends of fulminant myocarditis (FM) to have a better understanding of the topic.

Materials and methods

The data were downloaded from the Web of Science (WoS) database using the topic (TS) advanced search strategy. Many instruments were used to extract, analyze, and visualize the data, such as Microsoft Excel, HistCite Pro, GunnMap, BibExcel, and VOSviewer.

Results

From 1985 to 2022, 726 documents were indexed in the WoS. The United States and Columbia University were the most productive country and institutions. Keywords co-occurrence was carried out and four research themes were identified. In addition, the top three prolific authors, the first three highly cited authors, and the core authors of the author co-citation network were identified. The topics that they kept an eye on were analyzed, and the research areas of key authors were similar to the results of keyword co-occurrence. The hot topics of FM were related to the mechanical circulatory support, etiology, diagnosis, and the disease or therapy associated with FM.

Conclusion

This study carried out a systematic analysis of the documents related to FM from 1985 to 2022, which can provide a guideline for researchers to understand the theme trend to promote future research to be carried out.

Global research trends and foci of artificial intelligence-based tumor pathology: a scientometric study

Background

With the development of digital pathology and the renewal of deep learning algorithm, artificial intelligence (AI) is widely applied in tumor pathology. Previous researches have demonstrated that AI-based tumor pathology may help to solve the challenges faced by traditional pathology. This technology has attracted the attention of scholars in many fields and a large amount of articles have been published. This study mainly summarizes the knowledge structure of AI-based tumor pathology through bibliometric analysis, and discusses the potential research trends and foci.

Methods

Publications related to AI-based tumor pathology from 1999 to 2021 were selected from Web of Science Core Collection. VOSviewer and Citespace were mainly used to perform and visualize co-authorship, co-citation, and co-occurrence analysis of countries, institutions, authors, references and keywords in this field.

Results

A total of 2753 papers were included. The papers on AI-based tumor pathology research had been continuously increased since 1999. The United States made the largest contribution in this field, in terms of publications (1138, 41.34%), H-index (85) and total citations (35,539 times). We identified the most productive institution and author were Harvard Medical School and Madabhushi Anant, while Jemal Ahmedin was the most co-cited author. Scientific Reports was the most prominent journal and after analysis, Lecture Notes in Computer Science was the journal with highest total link strength. According to the result of references and keywords analysis, “breast cancer histopathology” “convolutional neural network” and “histopathological image” were identified as the major future research foci.

Conclusions

AI-based tumor pathology is in the stage of vigorous development and has a bright prospect. International transboundary cooperation among countries and institutions should be strengthened in the future. It is foreseeable that more research foci will be lied in the interpretability of deep learning-based model and the development of multi-modal fusion model.

Bibliometric analysis of global research trends on post-stroke pneumonia: Current development status and research Frontiers

Background

As one of the most common complications of stroke, post-stroke pneumonia significantly increases the incidence of adverse outcomes, mortality, and healthcare costs for patients with stroke. As the field of post-stroke pneumonia has gained interest in the recent years, there has been an increasing number of publications on post-stroke pneumonia research worldwide. Therefore, a more comprehensive understanding of the field is needed now. This paper is intended to analyze the research status and detect the research frontiers in this field.

Methods

VOS viewer, CiteSpace, and the online scientometric platform (https://bibliometric.com/) were the main visualization tools used in this paper. They were used to perform citation analysis of countries/institutions, co-citation analysis of authors/journals/references, co-authorship analysis of authors, co-occurrence analysis of keywords, and citation bursts analysis of references.

Results

The number of publications in this field has increased rapidly since 2010 and is expected to continue to increase in the next few years. The countries contributing most to post-stroke pneumonia research were the USA, China, and Germany. The most productive institution was Harvard University, followed by Humboldt University of Berlin, Charité Universitätsmedizin Berlin, and Free University of Berlin from Germany. Meanwhile, the German authors Meisel A, Meisel C, and Dirnagl U, who have contributed significantly to this field, were all associated with these three German institutions. The high-quality and high output journal was STROKE. In the coming years, the hot topic keywords “risk & risk-factors,” “outcome & impact,” “management & guidelines,” and “predictors” will gain more attention in this field. Finally, hot keywords were grouped into four clusters in this paper: cluster 1 (risk-factors studies of post-stroke pneumonia), cluster 2 (clinically relevant studies of post-stroke pneumonia), cluster 3 (mechanism studies of post-stroke pneumonia), and cluster 4 (care studies of post-stroke pneumonia).

Conclusion

This study shows the knowledge structure and evolution of the field of post-stroke pneumonia research and predicts research trends through visualization analysis. The future trend of post-stroke pneumonia research will gradually shift from clinical and mechanistic studies to treatment and prevention studies.

Mapping the Hot Spots and Evolution Main Path of Whole-Body Vibration Training Since the 21st Century: A Bibliometric Analysis

To evaluate the global scientific output of the research on whole-body vibration training (WBVT) and explore the current status and trends in this field over the past decades using bibliometric methods, we retrieved the literature related to WBVT from 2000 to the present in the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC). We analyzed annual publications, citations, countries, organizations, productive authors, and source 14 journals by the Web of Science online bibliometric analysis. We visualized the WBVT research trends and explored influential organizations and authors through VOSviewer. Then, we constructed a citation chronology map by HistCite to obtain the knowledge base of this field and made a primary citation path analysis by Pajek. Finally, we mined the hot spots of WBVT by BICOMB and gCLUTO. Overall, there were 1,629 publications included in this study between 2000 and 2022. The United States contributed the most publications in this field, and the country with the most active partnership was Spain. The University of Cologne ranked highest among top productive organizations. Bernardo-Filho, Mario, from Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro, ranked first among the top productive authors. The Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research topped the list of journals with the most publications on WBVT by a wide margin. The WBVT research field started from Rittweger’s study on the acute physiological effects of WBVT in 2000, which was divided into two stages. The first stage focused on improving athletic ability, and the second stage gradually turned to the application in medicine. A keyword analysis showed the exercise rehabilitation of several aging chronic diseases was the research trend and hot spot of WBVT. The current study provided a time-based development and a global network hub for WBVT research, contributing to identifying core target diseases of WBVT and providing various insights for researchers in the future.

A bibliometric analysis of global publications on graft-versus-host disease research

BACKGROUND

Graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) is a fatal complication of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation and is an enormous burden on the patient economy and related health systems. Nevertheless, only a few bibliometric studies have examined the direction of research and the major findings within the field.

METHODS

Statistical and visualization bibliometric analysis was performed in April 2021. Our research data were retrieved from the Web of Science using an advanced search strategy. We then used bibliometric analysis to determine the current general research direction and trend of publications and established the most prolific and distinguished authors, institutions, countries, funding agencies, and keywords in GVHD research. We employed VOSviewer (Leiden University, Leiden, Netherlands), Microsoft Excel (Microsoft, Redmond, State of Washington), and GunnMap (https://lert.co.nz/map/) to retrieve, integrate, and visualize the results.

RESULTS

Overall, 15,378 publications from 500 journals were extracted from the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) Web of Science Core Collection database based on our analysis, of which the United States and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center were the most prolific countries and institutions, respectively. Moreover, we identified future research trends and the current status of GVHD research based on the top 10 most cited articles. Finally, influential authors' analysis demonstrated that Blazar, BR were both the most productive and most cited among all authors.

CONCLUSION

Our study provides an exhaustive and objective overview of the current status of GVHD research. This information would be highly beneficial to anyone seeking information on GVHD and would serve as a reference guide for researchers aiming to conduct further GVHD research.

Global Research Status and Trends in Hair Follicle Stem Cells: a Bibliometric Analysis

BACKGROUND

Hair follicle stem cells (HFSCs) are derived from the bulge region and are important autologous stem cell sources. Bibliometric is a statistical method that quantitatively analyses the research papers concerned about one special topic. This study aims to estimate the research status and trends of HFSCs worldwide by bibliometric analyses.

METHODS

Data were obtained from the Web of Science by searching keywords related to HFSCs. Publication distributions stratified by countries/regions, institutions, journals, and authors were systematically assessed. The frequency of keywords was assessed, and bibliometric mapping was employed to describe the development of HFSC research.

RESULTS

A total of 458 publications that met our screening criteria were included in this study, consisting of 423 (92.4%) articles and 35 (7.6%) reviews. The United States of America (USA) ranked first in the number of publications at 146 (31.9%), followed by China at 130 (28.4%), which is consistent with the rank of the H-index. Author keywords were classified into three clusters, namely, basic study, applied study, and biomarker; average publication time of keywords in applied study cluster is later than basic study cluster. The keywords "bulge", "nestin", and "skin" are the top three most frequent keywords in basic studies; "differentiation", "proliferation", and "alopecia" are the top three most frequent keywords in applied studies. With respect to the latest research hotspots, "apoptosis" and "tissue engineering" are relatively new keywords.

CONCLUSIONS

The USA and China were the most productive countries for research on HFSCs. The focus of keywords gradually shifted from basic study to applied study. Research on the differentiation/proliferation of HFSCs and the role of HFSCs in alopecia have been recent research focuses. Apoptosis and tissue engineering are recommended as promising research hotspots. Our study provides profound insights into the research history, current status, and future trend of HFSCs.

Mapping global trends in adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cell research: A bibliometric analysis using scopus database

Background and objective

Adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (AdMSC) are multipotent adult mesenchymal cells isolated and cultured from the stromal vascular fraction derived from adipose tissue. The present study was conducted to analyze the global trends in AdMSC research using bibliometric and visual analysis tools.

Methods

The literature search was done on February 13, 2022, using appropriate keywords and inclusion-exclusion criteria from the Scopus database. The extracted data were retrospectively analyzed and visualized using Bibliometrics and R packages and VOSviewer.

Results

Preliminary analysis identified 1569 documents from the Scopus database published between 2005 and 2021. The average citations received per document was 26.51, whereas the average citations per year per document was 3.347. In addition, the selected documents had an h-index value of 90. China was the most productive country, whereas Seoul National University (South Korea) was identified as the most productive institute/university in AdMSC research. In addition, the National Natural Science Foundation of China funded the most research studies in AdMSC research.

Conclusion

The findings from this study indicate a progressive increase in interest among the research community towards AdMSC, suggesting promising prospects in the coming years.

Screening and preliminary identification of long non-coding RNAs critical for osteogenic differentiation of human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells

Human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (hUCMSCs) are attractive therapeutic cells for tissue engineering to treat bone defects. However, how the cells can differentiate into bone remains unclear. Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are non-coding RNAs that participate in many biological processes, including stem cell differentiation. In this study, we investigated the profiles and functions of lncRNAs in the osteogenic differentiation of hUCMSCs. We identified 343 lncRNAs differentially expressed during osteogenic differentiation, of which 115 were upregulated and 228 were downregulated. We further analyzed these lncRNAs using bioinformatic analyses, including Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway analysis. GO and KEGG pathway analysis showed that ‘intracellular part’ and ‘Phosphatidylinositol signaling system’ were the most correlated molecular function and pathway, respectively. We selected the top 10 upregulated lncRNAs to construct six competing endogenous RNA networks. We validated the impact of the lncRNA H19 on osteogenic differentiation by overexpressing it in hUCMSCs. Overall, our results pave the way to detailed studies of the molecular mechanisms of hUCMSC osteogenic differentiation, and they provide a new theoretical basis to guide the therapeutic application of hUCMSCs.

Bibliometric Analysis of Global Research on Perinatal Palliative Care

OBJECTIVES

The aim of this study was to perform a bibliometric analysis of publications related to perinatal palliative care to identify scientific output and research trends at a global level.

METHODS

The Web of Science Core Collection database was searched to retrieve publications focusing on perinatal palliative care published between 2001 and 2020. All retrieved publications were identified by title and abstract for their relevance to perinatal palliative care. These eligible publications were extracted from the following data: title, abstract, year, keywords, author, organization, journal and cited literature. VOSviewer software was used to conduct bibliographic coupling, coauthorship, and cooccurrence analyses and to detect publication trends in perinatal palliative care research.

RESULTS

A total of 114 publications concerning perinatal palliative care were included. The annual number of publications has increased dramatically in recent years. The United States has made the largest contribution to this field with the majority of publications (68, 59.6%) and citations (1,091, 70.5%) and with close collaborations with researchers in Canada, Portugal and Australia. Wool C and her institution, York College of Pennsylvania, are the respectively, most prolific author and institution in this field, publishing 18 papers (15.8%). Journal of Palliative Medicine is the leading and main journal in this field. According to the cooccurrence network analysis, five main research topics were identified: the candidates for PPC, service models and forms, framework components, parental perspectives and satisfaction, and challenges and needs of health care providers.

CONCLUSION

The findings of this bibliometric study illustrate the current state and global trends of perinatal palliative care for the past two decades, which will help researchers determine areas of research focus and explore new directions for future research in this field.

Extracellular vesicles derived from CD73 modified human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells ameliorate inflammation after spinal cord injury

BACKGROUND

Spinal cord injury (SCI) is an inflammatory condition, and excessive adenosine triphosphate (ATP) is released into the extracellular space, which can be catabolized into adenosine by CD73. Extracellular vesicles have been designed as nano drug carriers in many diseases. However, their impacts on delivery of CD73 after SCI are not yet known. We aimed to construct CD73 modified extracellular vesicles and explore the anti-inflammatory effects after SCI.

METHODS

CD73 engineered extracellular vesicles (CD73+ hucMSC-EVs) were firstly established, which were derived from human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (hucMSCs) transduced by lentiviral vectors to upregulate the expression of CD73. Effects of CD73+ hucMSC-EVs on hydrolyzing ATP into adenosine were detected. The polarization of M2/M1 was verified by immunofluorescence. Furthermore, A2aR and A_2bR inhibitors and A2bR knockdown cells were used to investigate the activated adenosine receptor. Biomarkers of microglia and levels of cAMP/PKA were also detected. Repetitively in vivo study, morphology staining, flow cytometry, cytokine analysis, and ELISA assay, were also applied for verifications.

RESULTS

CD73+ hucMSC-EVs reduced concentration of ATP and promoted the level of adenosine. In vitro experiments, CD73+ hucMSC-EVs increased macrophages/microglia M2:M1 polarization, activated adenosine 2b receptor (A2bR), and then promoted cAMP/PKA signaling pathway. In mice using model of thoracic spinal cord contusion injury, CD73+ hucMSC-EVs improved the functional recovery after SCI through decreasing the content of ATP in cerebrospinal fluid and improving the polarization from M1 to M2 phenotype. Thus, the cascaded pro-inflammatory cytokines were downregulated, such as TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6, while the anti-inflammatory cytokines were upregulated, such as IL-10 and IL-4.

CONCLUSIONS

CD73+ hucMSC-EVs ameliorated inflammation after spinal cord injury by reducing extracellular ATP, promoting A2bR/cAMP/PKA pathway and M2/M1 polarization. CD73+ hucMSC-EVs might be promising nano drugs for clinical application in SCI therapy.

Theme Trends and Knowledge-Relationship in Lifestyle Research: A Bibliometric Analysis

Healthy living habits (healthy eating, regular physical activity, abstinence from smoking, restrictions on alcohol consumption, and stress management) can help prevent a significant number of diseases. The purpose of this study is to use a bibliometric analysis to analyze the relationships between countries, institutions and authors through lifestyle studies from 2016 to 2020 to find out the latest research trends. This study utilized bibliometric data collected through Scopus including thesis titles, authors, agencies, countries/regions, publication years, and keywords. Data were analyzed using the VOS viewer (Vers. 1.6.13; Leiden University, Leiden, The Netherlands) and the findings were used to visualize similarity mapping techniques. Publication of lifestyle-related research papers has steadily increased between 2016 and 2020. The country/region most actively conducting such research was the United States, also home to the majority of institutions conducting work in the field. PloS ONE published the most lifestyle-related research under the field of Medicine. Identified keywords were related to risk measures, psychosocial factors, prevention, health promotion, and risk factors. Lifestyle research is a promising field of research worldwide and has great potential to improve human health, the environment, and quality of life. The findings are expected to promote future research and give direction to the advancement of the field of research by comprehensively analyzing and summarizing lifestyle research trends.

Mapping Knowledge Structure and Research Frontiers of Ultrasound-Induced Blood-Brain Barrier Opening: A Scientometric Study

Background: Among the effective approaches developed for blood-brain barrier (BBB) opening, ultrasound is recognized as a non-invasive technique that can induce localized BBB opening transiently and repeatedly. This technique has aroused broad attention from researchers worldwide, and numerous articles have been published recently. However, no existing study has systematically examined this field from a scientometric perspective. The aim of this study was to summarize the knowledge structure and identify emerging trends and potential hotspots in this field. Methods: Publications related to ultrasound-induced BBB opening published from 1998 to 2020 were retrieved from Web of Science Core Collection. The search strategies were as follows: topic: ("blood brain barrier" OR "BBB") AND topic: (ultrasound OR ultrason* OR acoustic* OR sonopora*). The document type was set to articles or reviews with language restriction to English. Three different analysis tools including one online platform, VOS viewer1.6.16, and CiteSpace V5.7.R2 software were used to conduct this scientometric study. Results: A total of 1,201 valid records were included in the final analysis. The majority of scientific publication was produced by authors from North America, Eastern Asia, and Western Europe. Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology was the most prominent journal. The USA, China, and Canada were the most productive countries. Hynynen K, and Mcdannold N were key researchers with considerable academic influence. According to analysis of keywords, four main research directions were identified: cluster 1 (microbubbles study), cluster 2 (management of intracranial tumors), cluster 3 (ultrasound parameters and mechanisms study), and cluster 4 (treatment of neurodegenerative diseases). The current research hotspot has shifted from the basic research of ultrasound and microbubbles to management of intracranial tumors and neurodegenerative diseases. Burst detection analysis showed that Parkinson's disease, doxorubicin, gold nanoparticle, glioblastoma, gene therapy, and Alzheimer's disease may continue to be the research frontiers. Conclusion: Ultrasound-induced BBB opening research is in a period of robust development. This study is a starting point, providing a comprehensive overview, development landscape, and future opportunities of this technology, which standout as a useful reference for researchers and decision makers interested in this area.

Publication Trends of Research on Retinoblastoma During 2001-2021: A 20-Year Bibliometric Analysis

Background: Retinoblastoma is the most common primary intraocular malignancy of childhood. Despite high survival and eye salvage as the result of various types of therapies, retinoblastoma remains a disease that places a considerable burden on developing countries. Our study attempted to analyse the research trends in retinoblastoma research and compare contributions from different countries, institutions, journals, and authors.

Methods: We extracted all publications concerning retinoblastoma from 2001 to 2021 from the Web of Science database. Microsoft Excel and VOSviewer were employed to collect publication data, analyse publication trends, and visualize relevant results.

Results: A total of 1,675 publications with 30,148 citations were identified. The United States contributed the most publications (643) and citations (16,931 times) with the highest H-index value (67) as of February 4, 2021. China ranked second in the number of publications (259), while ranking fourth in both citations (2,632 times) and the H-index (26) ranked fourth. The British Journal of Ophthalmology was the most productive journal concerning retinoblastoma, and Abramson DH had published the most papers in the field. Keywords were categorized into three clusters; tumor-related research, clinical research, and management-related research. The keywords “intravitreal,” “intraarterial,” and “intravenous” appeared the most frequently, with the average appearing year being 2018.1, 2017.7, and 2017.1, respectively. Management-related research has been recognized as a heavily researched topic in the field.

Conclusion: We conclude that the United States, China, and India made the most exceptional contributions in the field of retinoblastoma research, while China still has a disparity between the quantity and quality of publications. Management-related research, including intravitreal, intraarterial, and intravenous chemotherapy was considered as a potential focus for future research.

Global Research Trends of Ferroptosis: A Rapidly Evolving Field With Enormous Potential

Background: Ferroptosis is a newly proposed form of programmed cell death, and accumulating evidence suggests that it plays an essential role in the development of multiple diseases, especially cancers and neurodegenerative diseases. Since officially named in 2012, research on ferroptosis has grown rapidly. There are previous reviews focused on the research progress of ferroptosis from a certain aspect, but no bibliometric studies summarizing this field as a whole. This study aimed to assess the scientific output and activity regarding ferroptosis research from a global perspective. Methods: Publications related to ferroptosis from 2012 to 2020 were identified and selected from the Web of Science Core Collection. Excel 2019 and GraphPad Prism 8.0 was used to analyze quantitative variables including number of publications and citations, H-index, and journal citation reports. VOS viewer and CiteSpace were used to perform co-authorship, co-citation, and co-occurrence analysis of countries/institutes/authors/keywords. Results: A total of 1,285 publications on ferroptosis research were identified. The literature on ferroptosis had been continuously growing since 2012, and the expansion might continue at a rapid pace in the following years. China contributed the greatest proportion (43.74%) of ferroptosis publications, and the United States ranked first in the number of citation frequency (20,980 times) and H-index (70). B. R. Stockwell, D. L. Tang, and R. Kang were key researchers. The journal Cell Death Disease published the highest number of articles, with 42 articles. All the keywords could be divided into two clusters: cluster 1 (pathway and mechanism) and cluster 2 (treatment and effect). In terms of potential hotspots, keywords with the strong bursts and still ongoing recently were "neurodegeneration" (2017-2020), "chemotherapy" (2017-2020), "NF-kappa B" (2017-2020), and "photodynamic therapy" (2018-2020). Conclusion: There will be a dramatically increasing number of publications on ferroptosis research based on the current global trends. China has made significant progress in ferroptosis research, but the United States is actually dominated in this field. More focus will be placed on neurodegeneration, chemotherapy, nuclear factor κB, and photodynamic therapy, which may be the next popular topics in ferroptosis research.

Bibliometric Analysis of Research Articles on Pain in the Elderly Published from 2000 to 2019

Background

Given the rapid growth of the global aging population, pain has become an unneglectable concern amongst the elderly. The quantity of scientific research outputs on pain in the elderly has increased over time, but only a small number of studies have used bibliometric methods to analyze scientific research in this field. This paper aimed to analyze scientific research on pain in the elderly published from 2000 to 2019 in a systematic manner using bibliometric methods.

Methods

Articles on pain in the elderly published from 2000 to 2019 were retrieved from the Web of Science (WoS). Abstracts were coded on the basis of predetermined items (eg, type of article, topic, type of subjects, pain characteristics), and relevant information on the first author, citation scores, and article keywords were collected.

Results

A total of 2105 articles were included in this study. Statistical analysis revealed that the publication of articles on pain in the elderly increased in frequency over time (P<0.001). Most of the publications were original articles. Amongst the countries identified, the United States published the largest number of papers on this topic. Pain characteristics (50.21%), pain intervention (35.68%), and pain assessment (9.69%) were the main topics of research on geriatric pain. Back pain (12.30%) appeared to be the most popular pain type described in the included papers.

Conclusion

This work provides researchers with an in-depth understanding of pain in the elderly by evaluating relevant publications in the past two decades. Researchers in this field are warranted to explore future directions on geriatric pain such as the transition from acute pain to chronic pain and the underlying mechanisms of pain in the elderly.

Research focus and thematic trends in magnet hospital research: A bibliometric analysis of the global publications

AIMS

The study aims to carry out a bibliometric analysis of the research on magnet hospital from 1988-2020.

DESIGN

A statistical and visualization bibliometric analysis was conducted between February-May 2020.

METHODS

The information was extracted from Web of Science by the topic advanced search strategy. HistCite-Pro, Excel, GunnMap, BibExcel and VOSviewer were used to extract, integrate and visualize the bibliometric information. Furthermore, the research contents of the core-authors were explored and summarized by reviewing all the published articles.

RESULTS

Articles (N = 396) published in 107 journals were retrieved in the Web of Science from 1988-2020. The USA (N = 319) and University of Pennsylvania (N = 38) were the most productive country and institution respectively. Author co-citation and bibliographic-coupling network analysis identified that Aiken, Kramer, Laschinger, Schmalenberg, Lake and Johantgen were the major contributors and leaders in this field. According to the research content of the main contributors and keyword co-occurrence analysis result, the research focus could be divided into four parts: the mechanism leading to the outcomes differences for magnet hospital, the evidence-based practice, the outcomes comparison between magnet hospital and non-magnet hospital and the practice environment.

CONCLUSION

This bibliometric study offered a comprehensive overview of current study status of magnet hospital and this area has been drawn increasing attention over the years. However, the research on magnet hospital is still relative limited and needs to be paid more attention, especially in developing countries.

IMPACT

This study showed the most contributed countries, journals, institutions, authors and the main themes related to magnet hospital, which would help researchers find potential partners, optimize and deepen future research, such as enhancing the magnet hospital research in developing countries, improving the evidence-based research and considering the impact caused by different culture. Furthermore, this study can also give suggestions for magnet hospital policy makers.

Bibliometric analysis of global sickle cell disease research from 1997 to 2017

Introduction

Sickle cell disease is an autosomal recessive genetic disease caused by a single point mutation in the β-globin chain of the hemoglobin. It has been recognized by the World Health Organization as a public health priority since 2006.

Methods

The Scopus database was used in this study with the search descriptors: “sickle cell” and “sickle cell disease”. We applied common bibliometric indicators to evaluate the trend in scientific literature in sickle cell disease research.

Results

We retrieved a total of 19,921 pieces of scientific literature in the repertoire from 1997 to 2017. The Price law was fulfilled in the trend of production of scientific literature on SCD as the growth of scientific literature was more exponential (r = 0.9751; r² = 0.9509) than linear (r = 0.9721; r² = 0.9449). We observed a duplication time of 4.52 years. The Bradford core was made up of 69 journals with Blood at the top, publishing the greatest number of articles. The most productive institutions were mostly United States agencies and hospitals. The United States was the most productive country. The National Institute of Health was the most productive institution and also had the highest number of citations. Vichinsky E was the most productive author, while the most cited article was published by Circulation.

Conclusion

The growth of scientific literature in Sickle cell disease was found to be high. However, the exponential growth trend shows a “yet-to-be-explored” area of research. This study will be useful for physicians, researchers, research funders and policy-cum-decision makers.

Mitochondria: Potential Targets for Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a common and disabling joint disorder that is mainly characterized by cartilage degeneration and narrow joint spaces. The role of mitochondrial dysfunction in promoting the development of OA has gained much attention. Targeting endogenous molecules to improve mitochondrial function is a potential treatment for OA. Moreover, research on exogenous drugs to improve mitochondrial function in OA based on endogenous molecular targets has been accomplished. In addition, stem cells and exosomes have been deeply researched in the context of cartilage regeneration, and these factors both reverse mitochondrial dysfunctions. Thus, we hypothesize that biomedical approaches will be applied to the treatment of OA. Furthermore, we have summarized the global status of mitochondria and osteoarthritis research in the past two decades, which will contribute to the research field and the development of novel treatment strategies for OA.

Burns Impair Blood-Brain Barrier and Mesenchymal Stem Cells Can Reverse the Process in Mice

Neurological syndromes are observed in numerous patients who suffer burns, which add to the economic burden of societies and families. Recent studies have implied that blood-brain barrier (BBB) dysfunction is the key factor that induces these central nervous system (CNS) syndromes in peripheral traumatic disease, e.g., surgery and burns. However, the effect of burns on BBB and the underlying mechanism remains, largely, to be determined. The present study aimed to investigate the effect of burns on BBB and the potential of umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells (UC-MSCs), which have strong anti-inflammatory and repairing ability, to protect the integrity of BBB. BBB permeability was evaluated using dextran tracer (immunohistochemistry imaging and spectrophotometric quantification) and western blot, interleukin (IL)-6, and IL-1β levels in blood and brain were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Furthermore, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) was used to detect transcellular vesicular transport (transcytosis) in BBB. We found that burns increased mouse BBB permeability to both 10-kDa and 70-kDa dextran. IL-6 and IL-1β levels increased in peripheral blood and CNS after burns. In addition, burns decreased the level of tight junction proteins (TJs), including claudin-5, occludin, and ZO-1, which indicated increased BBB permeability due to paracellular pathway. Moreover, increased vesicular density after burns suggested increased transcytosis in brain microvascular endothelial cells. Finally, administering UC-MSCs at 1 h after burns effectively reversed these adverse effects and protected the integrity of BBB. These results suggest that burns increase BBB permeability through both paracellular pathway and transcytosis, the potential mechanism of which might be through increasing IL-6 and IL-1β levels and decreasing Mfsd2a level, and appropriate treatment with UC-MSCs can reverse these effects and protect the integrity of BBB after burns.

Effects of Conditioned Medium from Bone Marrow Cells on Human Umbilical Cord Perivascular Cells

Mesenchymal cells derived from human umbilical cord tissue are attracting increasing attention as a source for cell therapy. However, for applying the same in tissue engineering, it has been shown that the differentiation capacity of mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) is influenced by the tissue from which the cells are harvested. Thus, to explore the possibility of increasing the osteogenic capacity of MSCs derived from the perivascular tissue of the human umbilical cord (human umbilical cord perivascular cells, HUCPVCs), we cultured these cells using conditioned medium (CM) derived from cultures of human bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (hBMMSCs). However, hBM-CM contains a wide variety of growth factors, the amounts and ratios of which are considered to vary with the cell culture stage. Thus, we aimed to evaluate the effects of hBM-CM derived from different stages of hBMMSC culture on the osteogenic capacity of HUCPVCs. The stages of hBMMSC culture were defined as follows: Stage 1 (mitogenic stage) represented the period from the start of hBMMSC culture to 70% cell confluence; Stage 2 (confluent stage) represented the period from 70% confluence to the initiation of calcified nodule formation; and Stage 3 (calcification stage) represented the period following the initiation of calcified nodule formation. An analysis of growth factors contained in the CM obtained at each stage by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay showed that insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) was significantly elevated at Stage 2, whereas vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) was significantly elevated at Stage 3. HUCPVCs were cultured using the CM from each of the stages for 1, 2, or 3 weeks. RUNX2 expression was the most upregulated at week 1 and then downregulated in all the groups. The expression of collagen 1 was significantly elevated in Stage 2 HUCs at week 3. Alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity, ALP, and alizarin staining were higher in Stage 2 HUCs and Stage 3 HUCs. The calcium content was the highest in Stage 2 HUCs. The calcium content of HUCPVC obtained by the method used in this study was six times higher than that reported in the previous study. Collectively, our results show that the CM obtained at Stage 2 was most effective in driving the osteogenic differentiation of HUCPVCs. Impact Statement Mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) derived from the perivascular tissue of umbilical cords are promising candidates for regenerative medicine. Because these are able to be differentiated into bone cells, cartilage cells, and adipocytes. The number of MSCs in perivascular tissue (HUCPVCs) is ∼1/300 but the number of HUCPVCs that differentiates into osteogenic cells is quite low. In order to promote osteogenic differentiation of HUCPVCs, we cultured HUCPVCs using conditioned medium collected from human bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stromal cells. Our study suggests that the use of conditioned medium can be effective on inducing osteogenic differentiation of HUCPVCs.

Mesenchymal stem cells inhibited the differentiation of MDSCs via COX2/PGE2 in experimental sialadenitis

Background

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) can regulate innate and adaptive immune systems through interacting with immune cells directly and secreting multiple soluble factors. Due to their immunosuppressive properties, MSC transplantation has been applied to treat many clinical and experimental autoimmune diseases. However, the therapeutic effects and mechanisms by which MSCs regulate myeloid cells in Sjögren’s syndrome (SS) still remain elusive.

Methods

The number and immune-suppressive activity of myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs), polymorphonuclear MDSCs (PMN-MDSCs), and monocytic MDSCs (M-MDSCs) were determined in non-obese diabetic (NOD) mice with sialadenitis and in NOD mice with human umbilical cord-derived MSC (UC-MSC) transplantation. Bone marrow cells were cultured with MSC-conditioned medium (MSC-CM) for 4 days. The number and immune-suppressive gene of MDSCs were detected by flow cytometry or qRT-PCR.

Results

The results showed that the number of MDSCs and PMN-MDSCs was higher and M-MDSCs were lower in NOD mice with sialadenitis. UC-MSCs ameliorated SS-like syndrome by reducing MDSCs, PMN-MDSCs, and M-MDSCs and promoting the suppressive ability of MDSCs significantly in NOD mice. UC-MSCs inhibited the differentiation of MDSCs. In addition, UC-MSCs enhanced the suppressive ability of MDSCs in vitro. Mechanistically, MSCs inhibited the differentiation of MDSCs and PMN-MDSCs via secreting prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) and inhibited the differentiation of M-MDSCs through secreting interferon-β (IFN-β).

Conclusions

Our findings suggested that MSCs alleviated SS-like symptoms by suppressing the aberrant accumulation and improving the suppressive function of MDSCs in NOD mice with sialadenitis.

Theme Trends and Knowledge Structure on Mobile Health Apps: Bibliometric Analysis

Background

Due to the widespread and unprecedented popularity of mobile phones, the use of digital medicine and mobile health apps has seen significant growth. Mobile health apps have tremendous potential for monitoring and treating diseases, improving patient care, and promoting health.

Objective

This paper aims to explore research trends, coauthorship networks, and the research hot spots of mobile health app research.

Methods

Publications related to mobile health apps were retrieved and extracted from the Web of Science database with no language restrictions. Bibliographic Item Co-Occurrence Matrix Builder was employed to extract bibliographic information (publication year and journal source) and perform a descriptive analysis. We then used the VOSviewer (Leiden University) tool to construct and visualize the co-occurrence networks of researchers, research institutions, countries/regions, citations, and keywords.

Results

We retrieved 2802 research papers on mobile health apps published from 2000 to 2019. The number of annual publications increased over the past 19 years. JMIR mHealth and uHealth (323/2802, 11.53%), Journal of Medical Internet Research (106/2802, 3.78%), and JMIR Research Protocols (82/2802, 2.93%) were the most common journals for these publications. The United States (1186/2802, 42.33%), England (235/2802, 8.39%), Australia (215/2802, 7.67%), and Canada (112/2802, 4.00%) were the most productive countries of origin. The University of California San Francisco, the University of Washington, and the University of Toronto were the most productive institutions. As for the authors’ contributions, Schnall R, Kuhn E, Lopez-Coronado M, and Kim J were the most active researchers. The co-occurrence cluster analysis of the top 100 keywords forms 5 clusters: (1) the technology and system development of mobile health apps; (2) mobile health apps for mental health; (3) mobile health apps in telemedicine, chronic disease, and medication adherence management; (4) mobile health apps in health behavior and health promotion; and (5) mobile health apps in disease prevention via the internet.

Conclusions

We summarize the recent advances in mobile health app research and shed light on their research frontier, trends, and hot topics through bibliometric analysis and network visualization. These findings may provide valuable guidance on future research directions and perspectives in this rapidly developing field.

A global bibliometric and visualized analysis in the status and trends of subchondral bone research

BACKGROUND

Structural and functional changes in subchondral bone have been recognized as a key factor in the development of related disease, and subchondral bone may be a new target for the treatment of osteoarthritis. The purpose of our present study is to investigate the global status and trends of subchondral bone research.

METHOD

Publications related to the studies of subchondral bone from 1993 to 2018 were retrieved from the Science Citation Index-Expanded Web of Science database. The data source was studied and indexed by using bibliometric methodology. For visualized study, bibliographic coupling analysis, co-authorship analysis, co-citation analysis, co-occurrence analysis and the analysis of publication trends in subchondral bone research were conducted by VOS viewer and GraphPadPrism 5 software.

RESULTS

A total of 4780 publications were included. There is an increasing trend of the relative research interests and number of publications per year globally. The cumulative number of publications about subchondral bone research followed the logistic growth model (Equation is included in full-text article.). The USA made the highest contributions to the global research with the most citations, the highest H-index, and the most total link strength, while Denmark had the highest average citation per item. The journal Osteoarthritis and Cartilage had the largest publication number. Boston University is the most contributive institution. Studies could be divided into 4 clusters: "Mechanism research", "Animal study", "Clinical study" and "Pathological features". Less efforts were put into clinical study.

CONCLUSION

The number of publications about subchondral bone research would be increasing in the next years based on the current global trends. Attention should be drawn to the latest popular research, including "Mesenchymal stem-cells", "Autologous chondrocyte implantation", "Microfracture" and "Pain". Therefore, more and more efforts will be put into mechanism research on subchondral bone, which may inspire new clinical treatments for osteoarthritis and other related diseases based on subchondral bone.

Bibliometric Analysis of Moxibustion Research Trends over the Past 20 Years

Objectives: A bibliometric approach using network analysis was applied to identify the development and research trends for moxibustion. This study also examined the network hub of moxibustion research by investigating the collaborative work of organizations and authors. Methods: Academic articles on moxibustion research published from 2000 to 2019 were retrieved from the Web of Science database. Extracted records were analyzed according to publication year, research area, journal title, country, organization, and authors. The VOSviewer program was utilized to visualize the trends in moxibustion research and to explore the influential organizations and authors. Results: Analyses of 1146 original and review articles written in English demonstrated that the number of publications related to moxibustion research has increased consistently over the last 20 years. China issued the most articles in this field, and the most represented research area was integrative complementary medicine. A network analysis based on the co-occurrence and publication year of keywords identified the relevant characteristics and trends of moxibustion research. By assessing the total link strength of organizations and authors, influential organizations and authors who have contributed to moxibustion research were identified. Conclusions: The current study examined research on moxibustion using bibliometric analysis and identified a time-based development of moxibustion research and a global network hub of moxibustion research.

Evaluation of heterogeneous catalytic ozonation process for diclofenac degradation in solutions synthetically prepared

Sodium diclofenac (DCF) is a common analgesic and anti-inflammatory drug, which has become an environmental problem due to its growth and accumulation into water bodies. In this work, commercial (with excipients) and analytical (pure) DCF mineralization was studied by means of heterogeneous catalytic ozonation. The process was carried out with magnetite (Fe₃O₄) as a catalyst, which preserves its physical and chemical properties during the process. The best results of mineralization were obtained after a 40-min treatment of 35 mg/L analytical DCF solution, with a 0.5 g/L catalyst concentration. These results showed the highest organic load decrease, measured as dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and chemical oxygen demand (COD), with 94 and 89%, respectively. In addition, the percentage of organic load decrease was compared between the conventional and the catalyzed process. Besides, reaction products were identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and the catalytic properties were identified by Mössbauer spectroscopy, which showed the catalyst maintained its nature after the process. Finally, the results obtained show that the heterogeneous catalytic process could be an efficient degradation treatment for emerging contaminants such as DCF.

Mesenchymal Stem Cells in Renal Fibrosis: The Flame of Cytotherapy

Renal fibrosis, as the fundamental pathological process of chronic kidney disease (CKD), is a pathologic extension of the normal wound healing process characterized by endothelium injury, myofibroblast activation, macrophage migration, inflammatory signaling stimulation, matrix deposition, and remodelling. Yet, the current method of treating renal fibrosis is fairly limited, including angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibition, angiotensin receptor blockade, optimal blood pressure control, and sodium bicarbonate for metabolic acidosis. MSCs are pluripotent adult stem cells that can differentiate into various types of tissue lineages, such as the cartilage (chondrocytes), bone (osteoblasts), fat (adipocytes), and muscle (myocytes). Because of their many advantages like ubiquitous sources, convenient procurement and collection, low immunogenicity, and low adverse effects, with their special identification markers, mesenchymal stem MSC-based therapy is getting more and more attention. Based on the mechanism of renal fibrosis, MSCs mostly participate throughout the renal fibrotic process. According to the latest and overall literature reviews, we aim to elucidate the antifibrotic mechanisms and effects of diverse sources of MSCs on renal fibrosis, assess their efficacy and safety in preliminarily clinical application, answer the controversial questions, and provide novel ideas into the MSC cellular therapy of renal fibrosis.

Osteoporosis in postmenopausal women in this decade: a bibliometric assessment of current research and future hotspots

Postmenopausal osteoporosis (PMOP) has already become a major public health problem. However, there was no bibliometric analysis estimating the evolutionary process of PMOP research.

PURPOSE

This study aimed to assess its scientific activity.

METHODS

Publications on PMOP were retrieved from Science Citation Index-Expanded (SCI-E) of the Web of Science (WoS) from 2008 to 2018. VOSviewer software was used for data mining and visualization. The quantity of papers, number of citations, citation frequency per year, and H-index were assessed and compared among different countries, institutes, and researchers.

RESULTS

A total of 11,142 papers were included and were cited 184,416 times. The USA contributed the most papers (3162), the most citations (83,270 times), and the highest H-index (115). Canada ranked first for the number of papers per million populations and per trillion GDP. Seven of the top ten funding agencies were industries. The key words were stratified into four clusters: cluster 1 ("basic research"), cluster 2 ("diagnosis"), cluster 3 ("treatment"), and cluster 4 ("others"). Average appearing years (AAY) of key words in cluster 1 were the largest compared to those in clusters 2 and 3. For hotspots, "miRNA" showed a relatively latest AAY of 2017.63, followed by "abaloparatide" and "adipokine".

CONCLUSION

We concluded that the USA and Europe were the most productive regions on PMOP, with a high prevalence of articles supported by pharmaceutical companies. Key word focus gradually shifted from "diagnosis" to "treatment" and then to precision medicine orientated "basic research". It is recommended to pay attention to potential research hotspots, such as "miRNA," "abaloparatide," and "adipokine".
