Technological advancements in valorisation of industrial effluents employing hydrothermal liquefaction of biomass: Strategic innovations, barriers and perspectives

Hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) is identified as a promising thermochemical technique to recover biofuels and bioenergy from waste biomass containing low energy and high moisture content. The wastewater generated during the HTL process (HTWW) are rich in nutrients and organics. The release of the nutrients and organics enriched HTWW would not only contaminate the water bodies but also lead to the loss of valued bioenergy sources, especially in the present time of the energy crisis. Thus, biotechnological as well as physicochemical treatment of HTWW for simultaneous extraction of valuable resources along with reduction in polluting substances has gained significant attention in recent times. Therefore, the treatment of wastewater generated during the HTL of biomass for reduced environmental emission and possible bioenergy recovery is highlighted in this paper. Various technologies for treatment and valorisation of HTWW are reviewed, including anaerobic digestion, microbial fuel cells (MFC), microbial electrolysis cell (MEC), and supercritical water gasification (SCWG). This review paper illustrates that the characteristics of biomass play a pivotal role in the selection process of appropriate technology for the treatment of HTWW. Several HTWW treatment technologies are weighed in terms of their benefits and drawbacks and are thoroughly examined. The integration of these technologies is also discussed. Overall, this study suggests that integrating different methods, techno-economic analysis, and nutrient recovery approaches would be advantageous to researchers in finding way for maximising HTWW valorisation along with reduced environmental pollution.

MEUF for removal and recovery of valuable organic components present in effluents: A process intensified technology

In recent years, the domain of the research space in novel separation process has been led by membrane systems as a panacea providing multifarious benefits of high separation efficiency, elimination of extreme process conditions, sustainability, and environment friendliness coupled with high operational flexibility. In this niche area, often, ultrafiltration is touted as a robust separation technique due to its high separation efficiency, membrane stability, and lower operating costs. The only drawback of relatively large pore size can be overcome by combining surfactant addition, leading to development of integrated processes termed as Micellar Enhanced Ultrafiltration. MEUF processes isolate and selectively separate valuable organics present in effluent streams. The process characteristics fit the bill as a typified example for process intensification Technology interventions for recycling of surfactants can enhance the cost-competitiveness of the process. This has the potential to develop into a broad-spectrum effluent treatment option with a change of surfactants for target contaminants. Here, in this review, we attempt to critically examine the unique features of this technology, development of spin-offs with wide-ranging applications. Specifically applications in removal of hazardous, and persistent components like dissolved organics have been critically studied. The focus was to highlight the crux of the novel technologies highlighting the efficacy and the underlying concept of process intensification. Metal nanoparticles and its application on phenolic and heavy metal pollutants

The perpetual exposure of several manmade materials and their activities such as urbanization, industrialization, transportation, mining, construction, petroleum refining, manufacturing, preservatives, disinfectants etc., release various pollutants like organic, inorganic, and heavy metals which pollute the air, water, and soil. This poses various environmental issues which are relevant to the ecosystem and human wellbeing that intensify the implementation of new expedient treatment technologies. Likewise, phenolic and heavy metal pollutants find their way into the environment. These phenolic and heavy metals are toxic to the liver, heart and carcinogenic. Therefore, the removal of these kinds of pollutants from the environment is a highly challenging issue. As conventional treatment technologies have consequent drawbacks, new interests have been developed to remediate and remove pollutants from the ecosystem using metal nanoparticles (MPNs). To date, many researchers all over the world have been investigating novel approaches to enhance various remediation application technologies. One such approach that the researchers are constantly showing interest in is the use of nanomaterials with potential applications towards the environment. In this regard, MPNs like Copper (Cu), Nickel (Ni), Palladium (Pd), Gold (Au), Silver (Ag), Platinum (Pt), Titanium (Ti), and other nano metals are serving as a suitable agent to eliminate emerging contaminants in various fields, particularly in the removal of phenolic and heavy metal pollutants. This chapter discusses the mechanism and application of various MPNs in eliminating various phenolic and heavy metal pollutants from the environment.
