A New Insight on Stereo-Dynamics of Penning Ionization Reactions

Recent developments in the experimental study of Penning ionization reactions are presented here to cast light on basic aspects of the stereo-dynamics of the microscopic mechanisms involved. They concern the dependence of the reaction probability on the relative orientation of the atomic and molecular orbitals of reagents and products. The focus is on collisions between metastable Ne^*(³P_{2, 0}) atoms with other noble gas atoms or molecules, for which play a crucial role both the inner open-shell structure of Ne^* and the HOMO orbitals of the partner. Their mutual orientation with respect to the intermolecular axis controls the characteristics of the intermolecular potential, which drives the collision dynamics and the reaction probability. The investigation of ionization processes of water, the prototype of hydrogenated molecules, suggested that the ground state of water ion is produced when Ne^* approaches H₂O perpendicularly to its plane. Conversely, collisions addressed toward the lone pair, aligned along the water C_2v symmetry axis, generates electronically excited water ions. However, obtained results refer to a statistical/random orientation of the open shell ionic core of Ne^*. Recently, the attention focused on the ionization of Kr or Xe by Ne^*, for which we have been able to characterize the dependence on the collision energy of the branching ratio between probabilities of spin orbit resolved elementary processes. The combined analysis of measured PIES spectra suggested the occurrence of contributions from four different reaction channels, assigned to two distinct spin-orbit states of the Ne^*(³P_{2, 0}) reagent and two different spin-orbit states of the ionic M⁺(²P_{3/2, 1/2}) products (M = Kr, Xe). The obtained results emphasized the reactivity change of ³P₀ atoms with respect to ³P₂, in producing ions in ²P_3/2 and ²P_1/2 sublevels, as a function of the collision energy. These findings have been assumed to arise from a critical balance of adiabatic and non-adiabatic effects that control formation and electronic rearrangement of the collision complex, respectively. From these results we are able to characterize for the first time, according to our knowledge, the state to state reaction probability for the ionization of Kr and Xe by Ne^* in both ³P₂ and ³P₀ sublevels.

Study of Potential Energy Surfaces towards Global Reaction Route Mapping

The potential energy surface (PES) is just a theoretical construct based on the Born-Oppenheimer approximation, but it underlies various phenomena, including molecular vibrations, collisional ionizations, and chemical reactions. This account describes how a new idea for global reaction route mapping (GRRM), which had seemed to be impossible for chemical systems with more than three atoms, was born and has been developed during the course of the study of the PES. GRRM has pioneered new fields of chemistry. Furthermore, techniques for GRRM are still developing, and GRRM is further extending its application to various areas of chemistry and chemical physics.

A corpuscular picture of electrons in chemical bond

We introduce a theory of chemical bond with a corpuscular picture of electrons. It employs a minimal set of localized electron wave packets with "floating and breathing" degrees of freedom and the spin-coupling of non-orthogonal valence-bond theory. Its accuracy for describing potential energy curves of chemical bonds in ground and excited states of spin singlet and triplet is examined.

Outer valence ionic states of Cr(CO)6 and (eta(5)-C5H5)Co(CO)2 observed by two-dimensional penning ionization electron spectroscopy

Outer valence ionic states of Cr(CO)(6) and (eta(5)-C(5)H(5))Co(CO)(2) were investigated by means of Penning ionization electron spectroscopy (PIES) upon collision with metastable He*(2(3)S) excited atoms as well as high-level ab initio molecular orbital calculations taking electron correlation effects into consideration. By the 2D measurement combining the collision-energy-resolved technique of the metastable atomic beam and electron spectroscopy, ionic-state-resolved measurement of collision energy dependence of partial ionization cross sections (CEDPICS) was carried out. Because partial Penning ionization cross sections can be connected to the spatial extent of corresponding molecular orbitals (MOs) outside the boundary surface of colliding He* atoms, different slopes of CEDPICS were related to anisotropic interaction around the MO region. The observed CEDPICS and PIES band intensity were consistent with the order of calculated ionic states.

Stereodynamics and outer valence ionic States of ferrocene in collisional ionization with a He*(2(3)S) metastable atom by two-dimensional penning ionization electron spectroscopy

Outer valence ionic states of ferrocene were investigated by means of Penning ionization electron spectroscopy upon collision with metastable He*(2(3)S) excited atoms. By two-dimensional measurement combining electron spectroscopy and collision-energy-resolved technique of the metastable atomic beam, ionic-state-resolved measurements of collision energy dependence of partial Penning ionization cross sections (CEDPICS) were carried out. Since the partial Penning ionization cross sections can be connected with spatial extension of corresponding molecular orbitals (MOs) outside the boundary surface for the collision with He* atoms, different slope values of CEDPICS were related with stereodynamics in Penning ionization as well as anisotropic interaction around the ionization region: attractive interaction around ligand pi orbitals and repulsive interaction around ligand sigma orbtials and the metal atom. The observed negative collision energy dependence of ionization cross sections for the first ((2)E(2)') and second ((2)A(1)') ionic states was consistent with configuration interactions suggested by ab initio MO calculations [J. Chem. Phys. 2002, 117, 6533], which is due to the strong electron correlation effects beyond the one-electron MO description.

Effect of molecular rotation on the atomic alignment dependence in the oriented Ar (3P2) + CF3H reaction

Atomic alignment effect for the CF3* formation in the oriented Ar (3P2, MJ = 2) + CF3H reaction has been investigated at different two CF3H beam conditions: effusive and supersonic beams. The chemiluminescence intensity of CF3* was measured as a function of the magnetic orientation field direction in the collision frame. A significant contribution of rank 4 moment was recognized. The cross-section for each magnetic M'(J) substate in the collision frame, sigma|M'(J)|, was determined to be sigma(|M'(J)|=0):sigma(|M'(J)|=1):sigma(|M'(J)|=2) = 1.00:0.84 +/- 0.02:0.88 +/- 0.02 for the effusive CF3H beam condition. The atomic alignment effect was found to significantly depend on the CF3H beam condition. For the supersonic beam condition, sigma(|M'(J)|=0&1) was changed to be smaller than sigma(|M'(J)|=2).

Deuterium isotope effect on the atomic alignment dependence in the reaction of oriented Ar (3P2) with (CH3CN)2 and (CD3CN)2 dimers

The effect of atomic alignment on CN (B2Sigma+) formation has been studied in the reaction of oriented Ar (3P2) with (CX3CN)2 (X = H, D). The reaction cross-section for each magnetic M'(J) substate in the collision frame sigma|M'(J)|(H(D),d) relative to the cross-section sigma0(H,m) in the CH(3)CN reaction was determined to be sigma0(H,d)/sigma|1|(H,d)/sigma|2|(H,d)/sigma0(D,d)/sigma|1|(D,d):/sigma|2|(D,d)= 0.87/1.00/0.98/1.58/1.93/1.78. A notable deuterium isotope effect was observed. In contrast with the monomer reactions, a significant decrease of sigma0(H(D),d) relative to the other cross-sections of sigma|M'(J)|(H(D),d) was observed.

Deuterium isotope effect on the atomic orbital alignment dependence in the reaction of the oriented Ar (3P2) with CH3CN (CD3CN)

Atomic orbital alignment effect was observed for the CN (B2Sigma+) formation in the reaction of oriented Ar (3P2) with CH3CN (CD3CN). The relative cross-sections for each magnetic MJ' substrate in collision frame sigmaH|MJ'| for CH3CN and sigmaD|MJ'| for CD3CN, were determined to be sigmaH0:sigmaH|1|:sigmaH|2|:sigmaD0:sigmaD|1|:sigmaD|2| = 1.00:0.81:0.84:2.01:1.92:1.87. A significant atomic orbital alignment effect was observed. In addition, a notable deuterium isotope effect was observed on both the cross-section and the atomic orbital alignment effect.

Anisotropic interaction and stereoreactivity in a chemi-ionization process of OCS by collision with He*(2(3)S) metastable atoms

Ionic-state-resolved collision energy dependence of Penning ionization cross sections for OCS with He*(2(3)S) metastable atoms was measured in a wide collision energy range from 20 to 350 meV. Anisotropic interaction potential for the OCS-He*(2(3)S) system was obtained by comparison of the experimental data with classical trajectory simulations. It has been found that attractive potential wells around the O and S atoms are clearly different in their directions. Around the O atom, the collinear approach is preferred (the well depth is ca. 90 meV), while the perpendicular approach is favored around the S atom (the well depth is ca. 40 meV). On the basis of the optimized potential energy surface and theoretical simulations, stereo reactivity around the O and S atoms was also investigated. The results were discussed in terms of anisotropy of the potential energy surface and the electron density distribution of molecular orbitals to be ionized.

Collision-Energy-Resolved Penning Ionization Electron Spectroscopy of Thiazole and Benzothiazole: Study of Ionic States and Anisotropic Interactions between a Metastable He*(23S) Atom and Hetero Cyclic Compounds

Anisotropic interactions between a metastable He(2(3)S) atom and aromatic heterocyclic compounds (thiazole and benzothiazole) as well as their electronic structures were studied by means of collision-energy/electron-energy resolved two-dimensional Penning ionization electron spectroscopy combined with ab initio molecular orbital calculations. Different collision-energy dependence of partial ionization cross sections (CEDPICS) were clearly observed for different ionic states depending on anisotropic extents of molecular orbitals from which an electron is removed. It was found that thiazole and benzothiazole most strongly attract a He(2(3)S) atom around the region where the nitrogen lone pair orbital extends. For another heteroatom, sulfur, it is relatively weak, but a certain attractive interaction was found for the directions perpendicular to the molecular plane. Benzothiazole was shown to widely attract a He(2(3)S) atom in the out-of-plane directions, since the benzene moiety showed a deeper potential well than the five-membered ring. Assignments of the ionic states including shake-up states were also discussed from observed CEDPICS and ab initio molecular orbital calculations. In particular, for the satellite bands, a negative collision energy dependence of the band intensity was well supported by a configuration-interaction calculation that assigns the satellite bands to be the ionization from pi orbitals accompanying pi-pi or n-pi excitations.

Collision-Energy-Resolved Penning Ionization Electron Spectroscopy of Phenylacetylene and Diphenylacetylene by Collision with He*(23S) Metastable Atoms

Penning ionization of phenylacetylene and diphenylacetylene upon collision with metastable He*(2(3)S) atoms was studied by collision-energy-/electron-energy-resolved two-dimensional Penning ionization electron spectroscopy (2D-PIES). On the basis of the collision energy dependence of partial ionization cross-sections (CEDPICS) obtained from 2D-PIES as well as ab initio molecular orbital calculations for the approach of a metastable atom to the target molecule, anisotropy of interaction between the target molecule and He*(2(3)S) was investigated. For the calculations of interaction potential, a Li(2(2)S) atom was used in place of He*(2(3)S) metastable atom because of its well-known interaction behavior with various targets. The results indicate that attractive potentials localize in the pi regions of the phenyl groups as well as in the pi-conjugated regions of the acetylene group. Although similar attractive interactions were also found by the observation of CEDPICS for ionization of all pi MOs localized at the C[triple bond]C bond, the in-plane regions have repulsive potentials. Rotation of the phenyl groups about the C[triple bond]C bond can be observed for diphenylacetylene because of a low torsion barrier. So the examination of measured PIES was performed taking into consideration the change of ionization energies for conjugated molecular orbitals.

Probing the Shape and Stereochemistry of Molecular Orbitals in Locally Flexible Aromatic Chains: A Penning Ionization Electron Spectroscopy and Green's Function Study of the Electronic Structure of Biphenyl

We report on the results of an exhaustive study of the interplay between the valence electronic structure, the topology and reactivity of orbitals, and the molecular structure of biphenyl by means of Penning ionization electron spectroscopy in the gas phase upon collision with metastable He*(2(3)S) atoms. The measurements are compared with one-particle Green's function calculations of one-electron and shake-up valence ionization spectra employing the third-order algebraic diagrammatic construction scheme [ADC(3)]. Penning ionization intensities are also analyzed by means of the exterior electron-density model and comparison with photoelectron spectra: in contrast with the lines originating from sigma orbitals, ionization lines belonging to the pi-band system have large Penning ionization cross sections due to their greater extent outside the molecular van der Waals surface. The involved chemi-ionization processes are further experimentally investigated using collision-energy-resolved Penning ionization electron spectroscopy. The cross sections of pi-ionization bands exhibit a markedly negative collision-energy dependence and indicate that the interaction potential that prevails between the molecule and the He*(2(3)S) atom is strongly attractive in the pi-orbital region. On the other hand, the partial ionization cross sections pertaining to sigma-ionization channels are characterized by more limited collision-energy dependencies, as a consequence of rather repulsive interactions within the sigma-orbital region. A comparison of ADC(3) simulations with the Penning ionization electron spectra and UV photoelectron spectra measured by Kubota et al. [Chem. Phys. Lett. 1980, 74, 409] on thin films of biphenyl deposited at 170 and 109 K on copper demonstrates that biphenyl molecules lying at the surface of polycrystalline layers adopt predominantly a planar configuration, whereas within an amorphous sample most molecules have twisted structures similar to those prevailing in the gas phase.

Collision-energy-resolved penning ionization electron spectroscopy of HCOOH, CH3COOH, and HCOOCH3 by collision with He*(2(3)S) metastable atoms

Penning ionization of formic acid (HCOOH), acetic acid (CH3COOH), and methyl formate (HCOOCH3) upon collision with metastable He*(2(3)S) atoms was studied by collision-energy/electron-energy-resolved two-dimensional Penning ionization electron spectroscopy (2D-PIES). Anisotropy of interaction between the target molecule and He*(2(3)S) was investigated based on the collision energy dependence of partial ionization cross sections (CEDPICS) obtained from 2D-PIES as well as ab initio molecular orbital calculations for the access of a metastable atom to the target molecule. For the interaction potential calculations, a Li atom was used in place of He*(2(3)S) metastable atom because of its well-known similarity in interaction with targets. The results indicate that in the studied collision energy range the attractive potential localizes around the oxygen atoms and that the potential well at the carbonyl oxygen atom is at least twice as much as that at the hydroxyl oxygen. Moreover we can notice that attractive potential is highly anisotropic. Repulsive interactions can be found around carbon atoms and the methyl group.
