Development and Validation of a Model for Tritium Accumulation by a Freshwater Bivalve Using the IAEA EMRAS Scenarios

DEUTERIUM TRANSFER ANALYSIS INCLUDING FOOD CHAIN FROM SEAWATER INTO ABALONE

Tritium is released into the ocean from nuclear facilities located at coastal areas. In addition, tritiated water is decided to be released into the ocean from the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant. Although released tritium concentration would be strictly controlled, impact of tritium on the marine products is major concern for the public. In this study, deuterium transfers from seawater into seaweed (ulva) and abalone were measured. In addition, organically bound deuterium (OBD) transfer from ulva into abalone was measured. OBD concentrations in ulva were saturated in 2 weeks and those in abalone were saturated in 6 months. Ulva and abalone were exposed to seawater containing 0.2% (mol-D/mol-H) deuterium. Maximum OBD concentrations in ulva were ~0.1% (mol-D/mol-H) and those in abalone muscle were ~0.035% (mol-D/mol-H). Numerical deuterium transfer model was constructed. Obtained numerical model well represented the OBD-enriched ulva feeding experiment.

Environmental protection: researches in National Institute of Radiological Sciences

Some studies for radiological protection of the environment have been made at the National Institute of Radiological Sciences (NIRS). Transfer of radionuclides and related elements has been investigated for dose estimation of non-human biota. A parameter database and radionuclide transfer models have been also developed for the Japanese environments. Dose (rate)-effect relationships for survival, growth and reproduction have been investigated in conifers, Arabidopsis, fungi, earthworms, springtails, algae, duckweeds, daphnia and medaka. Also genome-wide gene expression analysis has been carried out by high coverage expression profiling (HiCEP). Effects on aquatic microbial communities have been studied in experimental ecosystem models, i.e., microcosms. Some effects were detected at a dose rate of 1 Gy day(-1) and were likely to arise from interspecies interactions. The results obtained at NIRS have been used in development of frameworks for environmental protection by some international bodies, and will contribute to environmental protection in Japan and other Asian countries.

Measured and modelled tritium concentrations in freshwater Barnes mussels (Elliptio complanata) exposed to an abrupt increase in ambient tritium levels

To improve understanding of environmental tritium behaviour, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) included a Tritium and C-14 Working Group (WG) in its EMRAS (Environmental Modelling for Radiation Safety) program. One scenario considered by the WG involved the prediction of time-dependent tritium concentrations in freshwater mussels that were subjected to an abrupt increase in ambient tritium levels. The experimental data used in the scenario were obtained from a study in which freshwater Barnes mussels (Elliptio complanata) were transplanted from an area with background tritium concentrations to a small Canadian Shield lake that contains elevated tritium. The mussels were then sampled over 88 days, and concentrations of free-water tritium (HTO) and organically-bound tritium (OBT) were measured in the soft tissues to follow the build-up of tritium in the mussels over time. The HTO concentration in the mussels reached steady state with the concentration in lake water within one or two hours. Most models predicted a longer time (up to a few days) to equilibrium. All models under-predicted the OBT concentration in the mussels one hour after transplantation, but over-predicted the rate of OBT formation over the next 24h. Subsequent dynamics were not well modelled, although all participants predicted OBT concentrations that were within a factor of three of the observation at the end of the study period. The concentration at the final time point was over-predicted by all but one of the models. The relatively low observed concentration at this time was likely due to the loss of OBT by mussels during reproduction.
