Abstract
Canine ovarian epithelial tumours (OETs) are currently divided into ovarian adenomas and carcinomas, which are further inconsistently subclassified as papillary or cystic, whereas in human medicine, OETs are subdivided into several subtypes. This study aimed to establish clear morphological features enabling more consistent distinction between benign OETs and ovarian carcinomas (OvCas) as well as defining different histopathological patterns of canine OvCas. Analysis revealed a mitotic count threshold of >2 as a potential criterion for differentiating OvCas from benign OETs. Alongside ovarian adenomas, ovarian borderline tumours were introduced as a distinct category among benign OETs. OvCas exhibited five different histopathological patterns, namely papillary, solid with tubular differentiation, micropapillary, cystic and sarcomatous. Since some OvCas can morphologically overlap with other ovarian tumours, the expression of cytokeratin 7, a cytokeratin expressed in ovarian epithelium, was assessed and proved helpful, although it was not expressed in all cases. Furthermore, we investigated the expression of 14-3-3σ and cyclooxygenase 2 (COX-2). Based on the frequent expression of 14-3-3σ, this marker appears to have a role in canine OETs since it is not expressed in normal canine ovaries. The infrequent expression of COX-2 suggests that it is a poor candidate as a potential therapeutic target in canine OvCas.

Abstract
A 17-y-old Arabian mare was presented to the Auburn Large Animal Veterinary Teaching Hospital with a long-term history of intermittent mild recurrent colic that responded to medical treatment. CBC revealed mild lymphopenia; serum biochemistry findings were of increased gamma-glutamyl transferase and creatine kinase activities, hyperferremia, hyperglycemia, hypomagnesemia, and hypokalemia. Abdominocentesis was compatible with low-protein transudate. Due to the progression and duration of clinical signs, the owner elected euthanasia. Postmortem examination and histopathology confirmed a cholangiocarcinoma. The neoplastic cells were arranged in large cysts containing lakes of mucin that comprised 90% of the tumor volume; thus, a mucinous variant was determined. The neoplastic cells had strong cytoplasmic immunolabeling for cytokeratin 19 and lacked immunolabeling for hepatocyte paraffin 1, supporting bile duct origin. Cholangiocarcinomas are infrequent tumors in horses with nonspecific and slow progressive clinical signs, including recurrent colic. Mucinous cholangiocarcinomas are seldom reported in veterinary medicine and, to our knowledge, have not been reported previously in horses.

Abstract
Case summary A young adult female spayed domestic shorthair cat presented for acute hindlimb weakness and anorexia with a 1-month history of lethargy, hyporexia and weight loss. A mass was palpable in the caudolateral abdomen and the left hindlimb was diffusely edematous. Abdominal ultrasound showed hydronephrosis of the left kidney with suspected hydroureter and heterogeneous tissue in the dorsal abdomen. CT evaluation confirmed a mass extending from the left kidney through the lumbar musculature with hydronephrosis, aortic attenuation, caudal vena caval thrombosis and lysis of vertebrae 4 and 5. Fine-needle aspiration of the mass suggested squamous cell carcinoma. Owing to clinical deterioration, euthanasia was elected. At necropsy, the left kidney was firmly adhered to the lumbar region with tissue that obliterated the musculature and surrounded the aorta and vena cava. There was hydronephrosis of the left kidney. Histopathologic evaluation of the mass revealed islands of neoplastic epithelial cells separated by fibrous connective tissue and areas of gradual keratinization with rare squamous metaplasia. The histologic diagnosis was invasive carcinoma with desmoplasia and vascular invasion. Relevance and novel information Primary carcinomas of the kidney in cats are rare and this report documents a progression of disease not previously reported in cats. This is the second reported case of a primary carcinoma of renal origin with features of squamous cell carcinoma in a cat, and the first with lumbar and vascular invasion. This is also the first use of kidney injury molecule-1 to help investigate tumor differentiation in cats.

Abstract
In a histopathological study of the renal crest (RC) of kidneys of cats with chronic kidney disease (CKD), 58/90 (64%) had epithelial proliferation. Of these, 33 cats had hyperplasia of the collecting duct (CD) epithelium (CDH) alone, eight had hyperplasia of the urothelium covering the RC (RCUH), of which one had concurrent abaxial renal pelvic urothelial hyperplasia (UH), and eight had both CDH and RCUH. CDH or RCUH were present in five cats with marked dysplasia of the CD epithelium (CDD) and four cats with invasive carcinomas, which also had epithelial dysplasia. All nine cats with marked dysplasia or neoplasia of the RC also had substantially altered RC contours due to focal haemorrhage, papillary necrosis or fibrosis. Three of the carcinomas had a strong desmoplastic response. In control cats, both urothelial (RC and renal pelvis) and tubular (CD and distal tubular) cells were immunopositive for cytokeratin (CK; AE1/AE3), tubular epithelial cells were positive for vimentin (Vim) and aquaporin 2 (Aq2), while urothelial cells were positive for p63. PAX8 immunolabelling was difficult to validate. CD and UH labelling was similar to control tissue. While urothelial dysplasia had the same immunolabelling pattern as UH and control tissue, CDD was generally immunonegative for Aq2. As immunolabelling of the four carcinomas did not distinguish between tubular and urothelial origin, with three positive for both Vim and p63, all were broadly designated as RC carcinomas. Overall, proliferative epithelial lesions are common in cats with CKD and form a continuum from simple hyperplasia to neoplasia of the urothelium or CD of the RC.

Abstract
A 10-year-old spayed female Border Collie developed a ductal adenocarcinoma in the spleen. Clinically, the spleen was enlarged and a small liver nodule was present but there were no other abnormalities. Most of the splenic parenchyma was diffusely infiltrated by variably shaped atypical neoplastic cells that formed small clusters or larger nests, arranged as duct or duct-like structures within a fibrous matrix. There was acinar differentiation in a few portions of the tumour with a sheet-like solid growth pattern and occasional squamous metaplasia or exocrine acinus-like structures. Mitotic figures were frequent. Neoplastic cells with ductal differentiation were diffusely immunoreactive for AE1/AE3, CAM5.2 and CK7 cytokeratins but negative for CK20, while cells with acinar differentiation were immunolabelled only for AE1/AE3 cytokeratins and were also immunopositive for mucin-1 and trypsin. A few regions of tumour with ductal or acinar differentiation were immunopositive for pancreatic lipase. All neoplastic cells were negative for mucin-2, vimentin, smooth muscle actin, chromogranin A, CD31, hepatocyte paraffin 1 and thyroglobulin antigens. Because of the formation of exocrine acinus-like structures and an immunolabelling pattern consistent with exocrine pancreas tissue, an adenocarcinoma of ectopic exocrine pancreas within the spleen was diagnosed.

Abstract
Although pyloric and duodenal adenomas occasionally occur in cats, limited information is currently available on their phenotypes and molecular features. The present study investigated the pathological features of these tumors and the mechanisms underlying their tumorigenesis. Biopsy samples from 8 cats diagnosed with pyloric or duodenal adenomas were examined by histopathology and immunohistochemistry. Normal pyloric and duodenal tissues of cats were assessed for comparison. All cases showed a papillary growth of cuboidal to columnar cells with eosinophilic, ground-glass cytoplasm. Mucin in tumor cells was positive for periodic acid-Schiff and paradoxical concanavalin-A staining, but was negative for Alcian blue. Immunohistochemically, tumor cells were positive for cytokeratin (CK) 19 in 8/8 cases and for CK20 in 5/8 cases, and weakly positive for CD10 in 4/8 cases, CK7 in 3/8 cases, and β-catenin in 2/8 cases. Nuclear accumulation of p53 was not detected in any case. DNA sequencing analysis identified no KRAS or GNAS mutations in the 4/8 cases and 5/8 cases for which the KRAS and GNAS genes could be amplified. The histological and immunohistochemical features of tumor cells were similar to those of mucous neck cells and the pyloric gland of normal feline tissue. The morphology of feline pyloric and duodenal adenomas was consistent with that of pyloric gland adenoma in humans; however, its molecular pathogenesis may differ given the lack of KRAS and GNAS mutations in the feline tumors.

Abstract
CASE DESCRIPTION A 16-year old castrated male domestic shorthair cat was evaluated at a veterinary teaching hospital because of polyuria, polydipsia, and weight loss of 2 months' duration. CLINICAL FINDINGS Hematologic and biochemical examination results were within respective reference ranges except for moderately high pancreas-specific lipase concentration. Ultrasonographic and cytologic evaluation revealed a hepatic mass with findings consistent with mild cholestasis and inflammation and a pancreatic mass that was initially identified as a neuroendocrine tumor. TREATMENT AND OUTCOME The cat underwent additional CT assessment and stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT; 3 fractions of 8 Gy, administered every other day) for treatment of the pancreatic tumor. Follow-up ultrasonographic and CT examinations indicated a partial response to SBRT, with a maximum CT-measured size reduction from 3.6 × 4.8 × 4.0 cm at the time of treatment planning to 2.0 × 2.0 × 1.9 cm 8 months later. Increased pancreatic tumor size and signs of carcinomatosis were detected 15 months after SBRT treatment; the initial cytologic diagnosis was changed to exocrine pancreatic carcinoma on reevaluation of the slides by another veterinary pathologist. Carboplatin treatment was elected, and signs of carcinomatosis resolved. The cat was euthanized without further testing because of weakness 589 days after SBRT was started. CLINICAL RELEVANCE To the authors' knowledge, this is the first report of SBRT for suspected exocrine pancreatic carcinoma in a cat. Further investigation is needed to determine optimal fractionation schedules for SBRT of pancreatic tumors and utility of SBRT of exocrine pancreatic carcinoma in cats.

Abstract
Among 113 feline gastrointestinal epithelial tumors diagnosed between 2006 and 2019, 78 (69%) were detected in the colorectum. Fifty colorectal tumors were selected for further pathological evaluations, of which 9 (18%) were histopathologically diagnosed as adenomas and 41 (82%) as carcinoma. The carcinomas included 33 tubular adenocarcinomas (TAC), 5 tubulovillous adenocarcinomas (TVAC), 2 mucinous adenocarcinomas, and 1 undifferentiated carcinoma. Histopathologically, TAC frequently showed vascular invasion (17/33 cases, 52%). In TAC cases, serosal infiltration (13/15 cases, 87%) and lymph node metastasis (8/9 cases, 89%) were common in bowel resection and lymphadenectomy samples, respectively. Immunohistochemically, the tumor cells of most cases were positive for cytokeratin (CK) 20 (50/50 cases, 100%) and CDX2 (48/50 cases, 96%). Focal immunopositivity for CD10 (11/50 cases, 22%) and CK7 (15/50 cases, 30%) was observed irrespective of the histological subtype. Only a few cases showed diffuse nuclear accumulation of β-catenin (2/50 cases, 4%) and p53 (5/50 cases, 10%). A lack of tubule formation, female sex, and low CDX2 labeling were statistically associated with carcinoma compared to adenoma (ρ = 0.615, P < .001; ρ = 0.279, P = .050; and ρ = -0.265, P = .063, respectively). Other features, including mucin profiles, Ki67 labeling index, and accumulation of β-catenin and p53, were not associated with malignancy. A sequence analysis revealed KRAS mutations in 3/7 TAC cases. These results suggest that KRAS mutations-rather than excessive Wnt/β-catenin signaling and the inactivation of TP53-contribute to the tumorigenesis of feline colorectal carcinoma.

Abstract
Canine and human bladder cancer present similar anatomical, morphological, and molecular characteristics, and dogs can be considered a model for human bladder cancer. However, the veterinary literature lacks information regarding cross-validation analysis between human and canine large-scale data. Therefore, this research aimed to perform a meta-analysis of the canine literature on bladder cancer, identifying genes and proteins previously evaluated in these studies. In addition, we also performed a cross-validation of the canine transcriptome data and the human data from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) to identify potential markers for both species. The meta-analysis was performed using the following indexing terms: “bladder” AND “carcinoma” AND “dog” in different international databases, and 385 manuscripts were identified in our initial search. Then, several inclusion criteria were applied, and only 25 studies met these criteria. Among these studies, five presented transcriptome data, and 20 evaluated only isolated genes or proteins. Regarding the studies involving isolated protein analysis, the HER-2 protein was the most studied (3/20), followed by TAG-72 (2/20), COX-2 (2/20), survivin (2/20), and CK7 (2/20), and the remaining nine studies evaluated one isolated protein each. Regarding the cross-validation analysis of human and canine transcriptome data, we identified 35 dysregulated genes, including ERBB2, TP53, EGFR, and E2F2. Our results demonstrate that the canine literature on bladder cancer previously focused on the evaluation of isolated markers with no association with patient survival. This limitation may be related to the lack of a homogenous protocol for treating patients and the lack of follow-up during treatment. In addition, the lack of information regarding tumor muscle invasion can be considered an important limitation when comparing human and canine bladder tumors. Our in silico analysis involving canine and human transcriptome data provided several genes with the potential to be markers for both human and canine bladder tumors, and these genes should be considered for future studies on canine bladder cancer.

Abstract
Long-term culture of canine artificial hepatocytes has not been established. We hypothesized that human placental hydrolysate (hPH) may support the long-term
culture of differentiated hepatocyte-like cells. Canine bone marrow cells were cultured using modified hepatocyte growth medium supplemented with hPH.
Quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and immunocytochemical analysis for albumin, qualitative RT-PCR for cytochrome P450 1A1
(CYP1A1), hepatocyte growth factor (HGF), Cytokeratin 7 (CK7), CD90, CD44, and CD34, and functional analyses of CYP450 activity and low-density lipoprotein
(LDL) uptake were performed. Cultured hepatocyte-like cells were able to maintain hepatocyte characteristics, including morphology, albumin synthesis, CYP450
activity, and LDL uptake for 80 days. Thus, hPH may be a potential facilitator for the long-term culture of hepatocyte-like cells. Clinicopathologically, this
culture protocol of artificial hepatocytes will contribute to liver function evaluation.

Abstract
A four-and-a-half-year-old female Scottish Fold cat underwent partial pancreatectomy with
en-bloc splenectomy. The resected specimen was a biphasic tumor that was diagnosed
histologically and immunohistochemically as pancreatic adenosquamous carcinoma (ASC), a
ductal carcinoma variant according to the WHO classification of tumors in humans. There
was a gradual transition between the adenocarcinoma component and the squamous cell
carcinoma component. The squamous cell carcinoma component comprised approximately 30–40%
of the tumor. A pancreatic tumor infiltrated into the gastrosplenic ligament and spleen
with regional lymph node and mesenteric metastases. Pancreatic ASC has not been reported
in animals. This is a case report of feline pancreatic ASC with splenic involvement.

Abstract
Adrenal disorders are common in ferrets, but there are few studies on cystic lesions of
the adrenal gland. The present study describes pathological and immunohistochemical
features of adrenal cysts in eleven ferrets and discusses their histogenesis. In nine of
eleven cases examined, which included seven, one, and one right, left, and bilateral
cases, respectively, cysts were in the adrenal cortex and lined with epithelial cells.
These epithelial cells contained an Alcian blue-negative/PAS-positive material and were
positive for cytokeratin (CK) 7. The staining pattern was similar to that of biliary
epithelial cells in the ferret. In five of the cases, there were small ducts adjacent to
the cysts that were positive for CK7 and CK20 and negative for CK19. Based on the
anatomical proximity between the right adrenal and liver, the immunohistochemical features
of the small duct cells were comparable to those of hepatic oval cells. These results
indicate the possibility that these adrenocortical cysts in the ferret originated from the
biliary system. In the other two cases, the cysts lacked an epithelial cell lining, and
there were dilated lymphoid vessels around the cysts. These cysts were assumed to have
developed in the adrenal medulla, because the cyst wall was positive for glial fibrillary
acidic protein and there were adrenal medullary cells positive for synaptophysin in the
cyst wall. Therefore, the medullary cysts may have been associated with dilated
vasculatures.

Abstract
The biological behavior and immunohistochemical features of feline renal cell carcinoma (RCC) have not been well characterized. In the present study, immunohistochemical examinations were performed in 12 feline cases of RCC. The RCC consisted of solid ( n = 2), solid-tubular ( n = 2), tubular ( n = 3), papillary ( n = 2), tubulopapillary ( n = 2), and sarcomatoid ( n = 1) type lesions. Of the cases with RCC, 1 developed metastatic disease and 6 cases had no evidence of recurrence at 80 to 2292 days after surgery. One papillary-type tumor had cuboidal cells with scant cytoplasm and monomorphic nuclei, and the other had pseudostratified columnar cells with abundant cytoplasm. Immunohistochemistry revealed that the tumor cells in most cases were positive for cytokeratin (CK)7, CK20, KIT, and CD10, with the exception of cases of the solid type with clear cytoplasm (solid anaplastic), papillary type with columnar cells, and sarcomatoid types. A small number of tumor cells in the solid anaplastic and in the sarcomatoid types were positive for aquaporin-1. Increased expression of N-cadherin and Twist along with nuclear accumulation of β-catenin were observed in the sarcomatoid type. These results indicated that CK, KIT, and CD10 are relatively strongly expressed in most feline RCC. The solid anaplastic RCC exhibited CD10 expression with the absence of distal tubule marker expression. Although immunohistochemistry profiles were relatively consistent with those described in human RCC, the histopathologic features were different from those seen in humans. Epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) marker expression in the current cases may suggest the involvement of an EMT-like mechanism in the development of sarcomatoid RCC in cats.

Abstract
Case summary A 4-year-old, spayed female, domestic shorthair cat was presented for evaluation due to a 4 day history of inappetence and lethargy. Physical examination revealed mild dehydration and blindness of the left eye. Abnormal imaging findings included a well-margined soft tissue mass with irregular central cavity located in the dorsal aspect of the caudal lung lobe. Cytological examination of the mass revealed chronic inflammation with hemorrhage. Tests for parasitic and fungal diseases were negative. Ophthalmic examination 17 days after the cat was initially presented revealed severe diffuse pathology of both retinas. Left renomegaly was noted 22 days after the initial presentation, and cytological examination of samples obtained from the right vitreous, left kidney and the pulmonary mass yielded atypical epithelial cells exhibiting malignant changes. Post-mortem examination following euthanasia revealed renal transitional cell carcinoma with metastasis to both eyes, lungs and skeletal muscle. Immunohistochemical evaluation of the neoplastic cells in the eye revealed moderate cytoplasmic reactivity for CK7. CK20 immunohistochemistry was negative. Relevance and novel information To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of renal transitional cell carcinoma with ocular metastasis in a cat. In addition, this report describes immunohistochemistry results of transitional cell carcinoma in a cat using CK7 and CK20.

Abstract
Human epidermal growth factor receptor type 2 (c-erbB-2), an oncoprotein with potential prognostic marker and therapeutic use, is overexpressed in several human and animal tumours. But information regarding this molecule in feline tumours is scarce. This study aimed to assess the changes in the immunohistochemical expression of c-erbB-2 in feline endometrial adenocarcinomas (FEA) compared to normal endometrium. An immunohistochemistry assay using a specific antibody against c-erbB-2 was performed in FEA samples (n = 34) and in normal endometrium in the follicular (FS; n = 12) and luteal (LS; n = 11) stages. In FEA, the c-erbB-2 immunoexpression was assessed in neoplastic epithelial cells whilst in normal endometria it was individually evaluated in the surface and the superficial and deep glandular epithelia (SE, SGE and DGE, respectively). In FS and in LS, all the epithelia were positive for c-erbB-2; positivity was higher in the SE and the SGE than in DGE. Twenty of the 34 FEA samples (58.8%) were positive for c-erbB-2 immunolabelling. Nevertheless, its expression was higher in all the epithelia in the FS compared to FEA (p ≤ 0.0001) or the LS (p = 0.016). The results presented herein suggest that c-erbB-2 molecule is differently expressed in the feline endometrium through the oestrous cycle and though it may also be involved in feline endometrial carcinogenesis, a question remains unanswered on the importance of additional pathways of epithelial proliferation in the neoplastic changes in feline endometrium.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Endometrial adenocarcinomas are a rare type of tumour in cats. Though different morphologies have been reported, the most frequent histological type of feline endometrial adenocarcinoma (FEA) is the papillary serous. Characterization of molecular markers expression in FEA may contribute to clarify the pathogenesis of these tumours and to assess the differences between normal endometrium and FEA regarding the expression pattern of several proteins. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the immunohistochemical profile of a wide panel of antibodies (specific for ER-α, PR, Ki-67, CK7 and CK20) in twenty-four cases of FEA. Comparisons were made between FEA and feline normal cyclic endometrium in follicular (n = 13) and luteal (n = 10) stages. Except for Ki-67, all other molecular markers were assessed independently for the intensity of immunolabeling and for the percentage of cells expressing the protein. RESULTS This study showed that in FEA a loss of expression occurs for ER-α (P ≤ 0.0001) and less markedly also for PR. The lost in sex steroid receptors concerns a decrease in both the proportion of labelled cells and the intensity of immunolabelling (P = 0.002 and P = 0.024, respectively). Proliferative activity, estimated via Ki-67 immunoreaction, significantly increased in FEA as compared to normal endometrium (P ≤ 0.0001). Feline endometrial adenocarcinomas maintained the CK7+/CK20+ status of normal endometrium. However, FEA showed decreased CK7 intensity of labelling compared to normal endometria (P ≤ 0.0001) and loss of CK20 expression, both in intensity (P ≤ 0.0001) and in percentage of positive cells (P = 0.01), compared to normal tissues. CONCLUSIONS Data gathered in this study suggest that proliferation in FEA accompanies ER-α down-regulation, possibly following activation of pathways mediated by local growth factors. Moreover, FEA retains combined expression of CK7 and CK20, as evidenced in normal endometrial epithelia, although a decrease in CK7 expression was observed.

Abstract
Forty-seven canine cutaneous epithelial tumors and cysts were examined to determine coordinate expression of cytokeratins 7 (CK7) and 14 (CK14), vimentin, and Bcl-2 using commercially available antibodies. Within non-affected normal skin adjacent to tumors or cysts, CK7 expression was observed in luminal cells in apocrine glands; CK14 expression was observed in the stratum basale, stratum spinosum, stratum granulosum, basal layer of outer root sheath, sebaceous glands, and myoepithelial cells of apocrine glands; vimentin expression was observed in dermal papilla and scattered non-epithelial cells within the epidermis; and Bcl-2 expression was observed in scattered non-epithelial cells in the epidermis and some apocrine glands. The pattern of expression of CK7 and CK14 in cases of adenocarcinoma of the apocrine gland of the anal sac (CK7+/CK14-) and hepatoid gland tumors (CK7-/CK14+) may prove useful for diagnostic purposes. Loss of expression of CK14 and vimentin, identifying myoepithelial cells, was observed in apocrine and ceruminous adenocarcinomas. Differences in patterns of expression of Bcl-2 were observed between infundibular keratinizing acanthomas compared to trichoepitheliomas.

Abstract
A 10-year-old female border collie was presented with a mass (2 cm diameter) in the fifth mammary gland. The mass was located in the subcutis and the cut surface was grey-white in colour. Microscopically, the mass was composed of tumour cells arranged in nests of various sizes separated by delicate fibrovascular stroma. The tumour cells had small, round hypochromatic nuclei and abundant cytoplasm. Metastases were observed in the inguinal lymph node. Immunohistochemically, most tumour cells expressed cytokeratin (CK) 20, chromogranin A, neuron-specific enolase, synaptophysin and oestrogen receptor-β, but not low molecular weight CK (CAM5.2), p63 and insulin. Ultrastructurally, the tumour cells contained a large number of electron-dense granules corresponding to neuroendocrine granules. Based on these findings, this case was diagnosed as a neuroendocrine carcinoma of the mammary gland.

Abstract
Background Canine mammary tumors (CMTs) are the most common type of cancer found in female dogs. Establishment and evaluation of tumor cell lines can facilitate investigations of the biological mechanisms of cancer. Different cell models are used to investigate genetic, epigenetic, and cellular pathways, cancer progression, and cancer therapeutics. Establishment of new cell models will greatly facilitate research in this field. In the present study, we established and characterized two new CMT cell lines derived from a single CMT. Results We established two cell lines from a single malignant CMT specimen: DTK-E and DTK-SME. Morphologically, the DTK-E cells were large, flat, and epithelial-like, whereas DTK-SME cells were round and epithelial-like. Doubling times were 24 h for DTK-E and 18 h for DTK-SME. On western blots, both cell lines expressed cytokeratin AE1, vimentin, cytokeratin 7 (CK7), and heat shock protein 27 (HSP27). Moreover, investigation of chemoresistance revealed that DTK-SME was more resistant to doxorubicin-induced apoptosis than DTK-E was. After xenotransplantation, both DTK-E and DTK-SME tumors appeared within 14 days, but the average size of DTK-SME tumors was greater than that of DTK-E tumors after 56 days. Conclusion We established two new cell lines from a single CMT, which exhibit significant diversity in cell morphology, protein marker expression, tumorigenicity, and chemoresistance. The results of this study revealed that the DTK-SME cell line was more resistant to doxorubicin-induced apoptosis and exhibited higher tumorigenicity in vivo than the DTK-E cell line. We anticipate that the two novel CMT cell lines established in this study will be useful for investigating the tumorigenesis of mammary carcinomas and for screening anticancer drugs.

Abstract
The expression of immunohistochemical markers that have been used in diagnosis and/or prognostication of urothelial tumors in humans (uroplakin III [UPIII], cytokeratin 7 [CK7], cyclooxygenase-2 [COX-2], and activated caspase 3) was evaluated in a series of 99 canine proliferative urothelial lesions of the urinary bladder and compared to the lesion classification and grade as defined by the World Health Organization / International Society of Urologic Pathology consensus system. There were significant associations between tumor classification and overall UPIII pattern ( P = 1.49 × 10–18), loss of UPIII ( P = 1.27 × 10–4), overall CK7 pattern ( P = 4.34 × 10–18), and COX-2 pattern ( P = 8.12 × 10–25). In addition, there were significant associations between depth of neoplastic cell infiltration into the urinary bladder wall and overall UPIII pattern ( P = 1.54 × 10–14), loss of UPIII ( P = 2.07 × 10–4), overall CK7 pattern ( P = 1.17 × 10–13), loss of CK7 expression ( P = .0485), and COX-2 pattern ( P = 8.23 × 10–21). There were no significant associations between tumor classification or infiltration and caspase 3 expression pattern.

Abstract
Thymic epithelial tumour (TET) histologic subclassification has not been well described in the veterinary literature as it has in humans. The objective of this study was to identify and describe TET subtypes in dogs and to determine the utility of immunohistochemistry (IHC) in differentiating these subtypes. Samples were reviewed and classified according to a modified World Health Organization (WHO) criteria for human tumours of thymic origin. Signallment, presenting signs, treatment and survival data was collected from medical records. Histologic review confirmed the same subtypes as described in humans. Presence of high stage disease, pleomorphism, mitotic figures and capsular invasion was more common in atypical thymomas and thymic carcinomas than in thymomas. IHC was performed for GLUT-1, CD5, CD117 and CK8/18; however, this was not useful in classifying the tumours.

Abstract
Thirty-nine epithelial bladder tumor samples from 37 animals affected with bovine enzootic hematuria (BEH) were selected for immunohistochemical studies. The expression of structural proteins such as uroplakin III (UPIII) and cytokeratin 7 (CK7) and the cell cycle–related proteins cyclin D1 and p53 were evaluated in urothelial papillomas and carcinomas. Loss of UPIII and CK7 expression was seen in both high-grade and high-stage urothelial carcinomas ( P < .001 and P < .02). Cyclin D1 expression showed no statistically significant association with grade or stage. In contrast, p53 immunoreactivity was positive in high-grade and high-stage carcinomas ( P < .05 and P < .01), confirming its association with the highest malignant behavior of the bladder tumors in BEH.

Abstract
We describe two cases of adrenohepatic fusion (AHF) in domestic ferrets (Mustela putorius furo). This condition is defined as the union of hepatic tissue with the adrenal gland with close fusion of the respective parenchymal cells and lack of a fibrous capsule between the two cell populations. AHF is believed to be a congenital anomaly caused by failure of retroperitoneal mesenchyme to stimulate capsule formation, promoting the fusion of the structures. Two male domestic ferrets had a mass adherent to the liver, comprising adrenal gland with areas of fusion between the liver parenchyma and adrenal cortex. There was no evidence of a capsule separating the hepatic and adrenal cell populations. Clinical signs related to either the liver or adrenal gland were not observed, so this was considered to be an incidental finding.

Abstract
A prevalência e os aspectos epidemiológicos, anatomopatológicos e imuno-histoquímicos dos tumores hepáticos malignos primários (THMP) em cães foram estudados. De 7.373 cães necropsiados em 48 anos (1965-2012), 64 morreram de THMP, o que corresponde a 0,9% do total de cães que morreram por qualquer causa, 7,8% do total de cães que morreram por tumores em geral e 33,5% do total de cães que morreram por tumores hepáticos. Desses 64 casos de THMP, 51 foram revistos histologicamente, avaliados imuno-histoquimicamente e reclassificados como carcinomas (colangiocarcinomas [n=36], carcinomas hepatocelulares [n=9] e hepatocolangiocarcinoma [n=1]) e sarcomas (hemangiossarcomas [n=5]). Dos cães com colangiocarcinomas e carcinomas hepatocelulares em que a idade estava disponível nos protocolos, 64,7% e 77,8% eram idosos, respectivamente. Na necropsia, colangiocarcinomas caracterizaram-se principalmente por ocorrerem em um padrão multinodular (83,3%), enquanto carcinomas hepatocelulares ocorreram tanto de forma massiva (44,4%) quanto nodular (44,4%). Metástases extra-hepáticas foram vistas em 77,8% e 33,3% dos casos de colangiocarcinomas e carcinomas hepatocelulares, respectivamente, e em relação aos colangiocarcinomas afetaram principalmente pulmões (52,8%), linfonodos (50%) e peritônio (19,4%). Ascite (22,2%) e icterícia (22,2%) foram achados associados ocasionalmente com ambos os tumores. Na histologia, a maior parte dos colangiocarcinomas (86,1%) e dos carcinomas hepatocelulares (55,6%) tinha padrão tubular e trabecular, respectivamente. Na imuno-histoquímica, a maioria (63,9%) dos colangiocarcinomas demonstrou imunomarcação para CK7 e nenhum imunomarcou para Hep Par 1. A maioria (55,6%) dos carcinomas hepatocelulares demonstrou imunomarcação para Hep Par 1 e nenhum imunomarcou para CK7. Os resultados aqui apresentados demonstram uma altíssima prevalência de THMP, principalmente colangiocarcinomas, e servem para auxiliar, através dos achados de necropsia, histologia e imuno-histoquímica, patologistas veterinários no diagnóstico dessa tão comum forma de câncer em cães da Região Central do RS, Brasil.

Abstract
An eight-year-old entire female boxer was presented with a two-week history of anorexia and lethargy and two-day history of unilateral left epistaxis. Clinical findings and laboratory test results suggested disseminated intravascular coagulation. On blood smear evaluation, occasional large epithelioid-like unclassified cells were detected. Occasionally these cells were organised in small clusters. Bone marrow examination revealed a marked infiltration by a malignant population of the same epithelioid-like cells. The dog was euthanased because of the guarded prognosis. Following histology and immunohistochemistry, a widespread undifferentiated carcinoma of unknown primary origin was diagnosed. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first case of carcinoma cell leukaemia reported in a dog. Carcinoma cell leukaemia is a rare oncological condition previously described in humans, characterised by non-haematopoietic neoplastic cells in peripheral blood.

Abstract
Cystadenocarcinoma is regarded as a rare adenocarcinoma variant in animals. This work reports the case of an 8-year-old female Poodle dog with salivary gland cystadenocarcinoma with morphological characteristics similar to a hemangiosarcoma. Histopathological analysis showed a tumor mass with cystic formations containing a large amount of red blood cells. In order to distinguish these two entities, periodic acid Schiff (PAS) staining and immunohistochemical analysis were carried out with the use of cytokeratin AE1/AE3 (CK) and CD31-specific antibodies. Neoplastic cells were PAS-negative, CK-positive and CD31-negative confirming their epithelial origin. Based on the findings, the diagnosis of high grade cystadenocarcinoma was established.

Abstract
A 17-year-old spayed female Japanese domestic cat presented with a solitary cutaneous mass in the right thoracic area. Histopathologically, the mass consisted mainly of round tumor cells that had infiltrated throughout the dermis and deep subcutaneous tissue. The proliferating pattern of tumor cells was solid but also trabecular or cord-like in some areas, and lined with small cells resembling mature lymphocytes or basal cells. The tumor cells were positive for cytokeratin 20 and synaptophysin. The positive reaction for cytokeratin 20 showed localized to diffuse pattern. This is the first report describing now cytokeratin 20 was clearly beneficial for the differential diagnosis of feline Merkel cell carcinoma.

Abstract
Ten spontaneous mammary gland tumors affecting guinea pigs (GP) were analyzed histologically and immunohistochemically. Histologically, 3 were benign (2 simple adenomas and 1 benign mixed tumor) and 7 were malignant (1 simple solid carcinoma and 6 simple tubulopapillary carcinomas). Immunohistochemical data revealed the glandular immunoprofile of all the tumors and suggested their ductal origin on the basis of cytokeratin 20 expression. Interestingly, cytokeratin 7 was detected in basal/myoepithelial cells. Further, all tumors were positive for type α estrogen and progesterone receptors, suggesting a role for steroid hormones in the development of these neoplasias in GP. This article describes the morphological and immunohistochemical features of the normal mammary gland and spontaneous mammary gland tumors in GP.

Abstract
An adenocarcinoma of the disseminated prostate gland with pulmonary, myocardial and renal metastases is described in a 12-year-old, neutered male European cat. Histologically, the tumour was localised in the spongy layer of the prostatic urethra and showed an epithelial alveolar pattern. Considering the anatomic, microscopic and immunohistochemical findings, the tumour was diagnosed as an adenocarcinoma of the disseminated prostate gland. To our knowledge this is the first report of adenocarcinoma of the disseminated prostate gland in a cat.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Prostate diseases in the dog are generally regarded as representative for their human counterparts. We characterized the normal canine prostate in comparison to the normal human prostate. METHODS Prostates of dogs were examined histomorphologically and by immunohistochemical detection of the markers CK14, HMWCK, CK5, CK18, CK7, UPIII, PSA, and PSMA. RESULTS Histomorphologically, the canine prostate lacks the human zonal differentiation, has much more prominent acini, while comprising less stromal tissue. In general, the canine prostate epithelium displayed a highly differentiated character, with no cells expressing CK14, minimal amounts of cells expressing HMWCK/CK5 and the vast majority of cells expressing CK18 and PSA. After castration, the prostate epithelium regressed, and the remaining tubules were largely populated by cells showing a ductal phenotype (HMWCK+/CK5+/CK18+/CK7+). CONCLUSIONS The human and canine prostate are histologically differently organized. The general scheme of cellular differentiation of the prostate epithelium may however be applicable to both species.

Abstract
In humans, mammary and extramammary Paget's disease is an uncommon to rare manifestation of intraepidermal adenocarcinoma arising from simple epithelium, usually glandular in origin. This report describes two cats with lesions in perianal skin consisting of atypical intraepidermal neoplastic cells. Differential diagnoses included intraepidermal adenocarcinoma, in situ squamous or basal cell carcinoma, junctional amelanotic melanoma, and epitheliotropic tumours of histiocytic or lymphocytic origin. The atypical intraepidermal cells in the cats were immunohistochemically positive for cytokeratin 8/18 (CK8/18), which stains simple (glandular) epithelium. The keratinocytes and basal cells were negative for CK8/18. In addition, the atypical intraepidermal cells were immunohistochemically negative for melanocytic, lymphocytic, and histiocytic markers. The staining results confirmed the atypical intraepidermal cells to be of simple glandular origin, and ruled out other causes of intraepidermal malignancy. In one cat the clinical lesions consisted of a pruritic erythematous eruption surrounding the anus. Another cat presented clinically for an area of irregular anal thickening; this cat had well-regulated diabetes mellitus. The cats were otherwise clinically healthy. The clinical features, histological appearance, and immunohistochemical staining of the skin lesions were consistent with those described for human perianal extramammary Paget's disease. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first report of an intraepidermal adenocarcinoma in a cat or other animal species.

Abstract
The expression of intermediate filaments is sensitively reflected in cell function. To examine the involvement of keratin in a secretory function, 15 kinds of keratin (keratin-2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 10, 13, 14, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20) were detected immunohistochemically and immunoelectron microscopically in the rabbit duodenum. Four types of secretory cells existed in the rabbit duodenum: enteroendocrine cells and goblet cells in the epithelium and mucous and serous cells in the duodenal glands. Among the 15 kinds of keratin, keratin 20 was selectively expressed in all these secretory cells. However, localization of keratin 20 in the endocrine cells differed from that in three types of exocrine cells. In the enteroendocrine cells, keratin 20-containing filaments formed a juxtanuclear network from which they extended to the apical cell membrane. These filaments may play a role in intracellular signal transduction, since the apical cell membrane contains some receptors for binding a specific extracellular signal. In the exocrine cells, on the other hand, keratin 20-containing filaments existed just beneath the cell membrane. These filaments may play some role in maintaining cell shape, which is remarkably changed during the secretory cycle.

Abstract
Mammary tumour samples (11 surgical and five post-mortem) from 16 adult European hedgehogs submitted between 1980 and 2004 were examined. Histologically, the tumours were classified as simple tubulo-papillary carcinomas with local invasive growth. In six cases, tumour cell emboli were present in blood vessels or lymphatic vessels, or both. However, metastasis to regional lymph nodes was found only in one hedgehog. Malignant neoplastic epithelial cells were immunolabelled by antibodies specific for various cytokeratins (CKs), including CK1-8, 10, 13-16, 19 and 20. CK expression did not differ from that in normal mammary gland tissue. CK20 was expressed in the mammary tissue of hedgehogs, in contrast to that of dogs and cats; CK7 immunolabelling, however, which commonly occurs in mammary epithelial cells, was negative. CK20 expression, together with the lack of CK7 as determined by a protein-specific antibody, represented an important difference from the CK profile shown by mammary epithelial cells of other mammalian species, including the dog and cat.

Abstract
A glandular choristoma found in the mesenteric lymph node of a goat would appear to represent the first reported case of non-neoplastic glandular inclusions in domestic animals. The origin of this type of lesion may be difficult to determine, but in the present case cytokeratin expression patterns suggested that the inclusions had an intestinal origin.

Abstract
Ocular medulloepitheliomas, adenomas and adenocarcinomas share a common phenotype and originate from the optic cup neuroectoderm. This can make it very difficult to differentiate between these tumors histopathologically. Therefore, this study focused on identifying a combination of immunologic markers that might be used in the diagnosis of these tumors. These markers included AE1/AE3, CK7, CK20, and telomerase reverse transcriptase (TERT). Routine immunohistochemical staining was performed on 27 whole globes diagnosed with one of these tumors. The tumors that immunostained for TERT showed increasing immunoreactivity as the tumor types increased in aggressiveness. None of the tumor types were immunopositive for CK7. CK20 immunostaining was found in the adenomas but not in the adenocarcinomas or medulloepitheliomas. AE1/AE3 expression was present more consistently in the adenocarcinomas and less frequently in the adenomas. AE1/AE3 expression was present in only one of six medulloepitheliomas. Furthermore, CK20 and TERT showed inverse expression patterns, i.e. TERT increased in expression and CK20 decreased in expression with increasing aggressiveness. These results may be important diagnostic and prognostic indicators for these tumors.

Abstract
The aim of the study was to test the potential use of commercially available antibodies generated against human cytokeratins in differentiating canine epithelial tumours in cytological samples. Immunocytochemical staining procedures were performed on 183 different primary epithelial canine tissues (including hyperplasia [n=7], dysplasia [n=3], benign [n=54] and malignant [n=119] neoplasia) and 20 distant metastases of 13 of the malignant tumours. All epithelial tumours and their metastases stained distinctly positive with broad spectrum anti-cytokeratin AE1/AE3. Immunocytological reactions with broad spectrum anti-cytokeratin KL1 produced less reliable results. Numerous negative reactions were found, especially in columnar epithelium tumours, whereas squamous epithelium tumours were KL1-positive. In most cases specific antibodies CK7, CK8,CK14,CK18 and CK20 showed similar reaction patterns when compared to reactivity in human tissues. Immunocytological staining was found to be a reliable and valuable diagnostic technique when combined with conventional cytology and may be especially suitable for the differentiation of undifferentiated epithelial tumours and distant metastases of unknown origin.

Abstract
Prostate carcinoma and transitional cell carcinoma (TCC) occur in the prostate gland of older dogs and have morphologic similarities when evaluated by light microscopy. The dog is a commonly used animal model for studying human prostate carcinoma; therefore, it is important to accurately differentiate canine prostate carcinomas from TCCs. We investigated whether keratin 7 (K7) and arginine esterase (AE) would aid differentiation of canine prostate carcinoma from TCC. K7 expression was evaluated in normal and neoplastic canine prostate and bladder tissues using immunohistochemistry. The expression of AE messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) in normal and neoplastic canine prostate and bladder was detected using northern blots and reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). In addition, AE enzyme activity was measured in normal and neoplastic canine prostate and bladder tissues. We found marked similarities in K7 expression in prostate carcinomas and TCCs. AE mRNA was present in high levels in normal prostatic tissue but was reduced in prostate carcinoma by northern blot assay. Nested RT-PCR detected AE mRNA both in TCCs (13 of 15) and in prostate carcinomas (13 of 13). Enzymatic activity of AE was high in normal prostate gland and in some prostate carcinomas, whereas normal bladder and TCCs produced lower levels of AE. In conclusion, K7 and AE cannot be used to differentiate TCC from prostate carcinoma in dogs.

Abstract
The case history of a four-year-old, male Bernese mountain dog is presented. Carcinoma cells were detected in the liver by ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration. Bone marrow aspirated from the iliac crest and the left femur showed a distinct infiltration by carcinoma cells. Immunocytological examination of the liver and bone marrow metastases showed a negative staining result for large spectrum cytokeratin (CK) KL1, a strong positive result for CK7 and a focal weak positive result for CK20. The dog was euthanased due to the grave prognosis. Histopathological examination revealed metastatic cholangiocarcinoma. The authors conclude that cytological and immunocytological examination of bone marrow aspirates should be used more frequently for the detection of distant metastases of carcinomas in small animal medicine.
