Absorption and scattering of light by small particles: the interference structure

Volume electron microscopy reveals human retinal mitochondria that align with reflective bands in optical coherence tomography [Invited]

Mitochondria are candidate reflectivity signal sources in optical coherence tomography (OCT) retinal imaging. Here, we use deep-learning-assisted volume electron microscopy of human retina and in vivo imaging to map mitochondria networks in the outer plexiform layer (OPL), where photoreceptors synapse with second-order interneurons. We observed alternating layers of high and low mitochondrial abundance in the anatomical OPL and adjacent inner nuclear layer (INL). Subcellular resolution OCT imaging of human eyes revealed multiple reflective bands that matched the corresponding INL and combined OPL sublayers. Data linking specific mitochondria to defined bands in OCT may help improve clinical diagnosis and the evaluation of mitochondria-targeting therapies.

Near Perfect Absorber for Long-Wave Infrared Based on Localized Surface Plasmon Resonance

In recent years, broadband absorbers in the long-wave infrared (LWIR) spectrum have shown great scientific value and advantages in some areas, such as thermal imaging and radiation modulation. However, designing a broadband absorber with an ultra-high absorption rate has always been a challenge. In this paper, we design a near perfect absorber that is highly tunable, angle insensitive, and has polarization independence for LWIR. By using multi-mode localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) of a surface metal structure, the absorber achieves a very high absorption average of 99.7% in wavelengths from 9.7 μm to 12.0 μm. For incident light, the meta-structure absorber exhibits excellent polarization independence. When the incident angle increases from 0° up to 60°, the absorption rate maintains over 85%. By modulating the size of the structure, the meta-structure absorber can also achieve a high absorption rate of 95.6%, covering the entire LWIR band (8-14 μm in wavelength). This meta-structure absorber has application prospects in infrared detecting, infrared camouflage, radiation cooling, and other fields.

Optical Detection and Imaging of Nonfluorescent Matter at the Single-Molecule/Particle Level

Since the first optical detection of single molecules in 1989, single-molecule spectroscopy has developed rapidly and been widely applied in many areas. However, the vast majority of matter is extremely inefficient at emitting photons in our physical world, which seriously limits the applications of optical methods based on photoluminescence. In addition to indirect detection by fluorescence labeling, many efforts have been made to directly image nonfluorescent matter at the single-particle or single-molecule level in different ways based on the absorption or scattering interaction between light and matter. Herein, we review five popular methods for imaging nonfluorescent particles/molecules, including dark-field microscopy (DFM), surface plasmon resonance microscopy (SPRM), surface enhanced Raman microscopy (SERM), interferometric scattering microscopy (iSCAT), and photothermal microscopy (PTM). After summarizing the principles and applications of these methods, we compare the advantages and disadvantages of each method and describe further potential development and applications.

Synthesis and Characterization of Silver-Gold Bimetallic Nanoparticles for Random Lasing

We developed rough silver-gold bimetallic nanoparticles for random lasing. Silver nanoparticles were synthesized based on a citrate-reduction method and the gold (III) chloride trihydrate was added to produce bimetallic nanoparticles. Gold atoms were deposited on the surface of the silver (Ag) through galvanic replacement reactions after the solution was stored at room temperature. Sample characterization and a spectrometry experiment were performed where bimetallic nanoparticles with nanogaps and the extinction of the nanoparticles were observed. The aim of this research is to synthesize nanoparticles for random dye laser in a weakly scattering regime. The novel bimetallic nanoparticles were added to Rhodamine 640 solution to produce random lasing. We found that random dye laser with bimetallic nanoparticles produced spectral narrowing and lasing threshold compared to random dye laser with silver nanoparticles. We attribute that to the localized surface plasmon effects which increase local electromagnetic field to provide sufficient optical gain for random lasing. The rough surface of bimetallic nanoparticles also contributes to the properties of random lasing. Thus, we suggest that the rough bimetallic nanoparticles can be used to develop random lasers.

Computational and Experimental Analysis of Gold Nanorods in Terms of Their Morphology: Spectral Absorption and Local Field Enhancement

A nanoparticle's shape and size determine its optical properties. Nanorods are nanoparticles that have double absorption bands associated to surface plasmon oscillations along their two main axes. In this work, we analize the optical response of gold nanorods with numerical simulations and spectral absorption measurements to evaluate their local field enhancement-which is key for surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopic (SERS) applications. Our experimental results are in good agreement with finite element method (FEM) simulations for the spectral optical absorption of the nanoparticles. We also observed a strong dependence of the optical properties of gold nanorods on their geometrical dimension and shape. Our numerical simulations helped us reveal the importance of the nanorods' morphology generated during the synthesis stage in the evaluation of absorption and local field enhancement. The application of these gold nanorods in surface-enhancement Raman spectroscopy is analyzed numerically, and results in a 5.8×104 amplification factor when comparing the values obtained for the nanorod deposited on a dielectric substrate compared to the nanorod immersed in water.

All-dielectric concentration of electromagnetic fields at the nanoscale: the role of photonic nanojets

The photonic nanojet (PNJ) is a narrow high-energy beam that was originally found on the back side of all-dielectric spherical structures. It is a unique type of energy concentration mode. The field of PNJs has experienced rapid growth in the past decade: nonspherical and even pixelized PNJ generators based on new physics and principles along with extended photonic applications from linear optics to nonlinear optics have driven the re-evaluation of the role of PNJs in optics and photonics. In this article, we give a comprehensive review for the emerging sub-topics in the past decade with a focus on two specific areas: (1) PNJ generators based on natural materials, artificial materials and nanostructures, and even programmable systems instead of conventional dielectric geometries such as microspheres, cubes, and trihedral prisms, and (2) the emerging novel applications in both linear and nonlinear optics that are built upon the specific features of PNJs. The extraordinary features of PNJs including subwavelength concentration of electromagnetic energy, high intensity focusing spot, and lower Joule heating as compared to plasmonic resonance systems, have made PNJs attractive to diverse fields spanning from optical imaging, nanofabrication, and integrated photonics to biosensing, optical tweezers, and disease diagnosis.

Mie-scattering formalism for spherical particles embedded in an absorbing medium

Most of the Mie-scattering calculations have been done for a particle embedded in a nonabsorbing host medium. Generalization to an absorbing host medium can be achieved (a) by modifying the calculation of the spherical Bessel functions to account for a complex argument and (b) by accounting properly for the net rate of incident, scattered, and absorbed energy. We present an extended formalism of Mie scattering for the case of an absorbing host medium. Numerical calculations show that for a large spherical particle embedded in an absorbing host medium the extinction efficiency approaches 1 compared with 2 for a nonabsorbing host medium. We conjecture that this difference is due to the suppression of diffraction when the radius of the sphere is large.

Infrared thin-film totally reflecting quarter-wave retarders

Double-layer ThF(4)-ZnS coatings on a prism of KCl, KBr, and KI are optimized to give totally reflecting quarter-wave retarders at a wavelength of 10.6 microm. The influence on the design parameters of the light absorption occurring at high temperatures is described.
