Multifunctional terahertz absorber based on the Dirac semimetal and vanadium dioxide

Design and Numerical Modeling of Terahertz Metasurface with Dual Functions of Sensing and Filtering

This study proposes a dual-functional terahertz device based on the Dirac semimetal, serving as both a sensing element and a band-pass filter. The device's operating mode can switch between these two functions by utilizing the phase transition property of vanadium dioxide (VO2). When VO2 is in the insulating state, the device functions as a sensing element. The simulation results demonstrate an impressive refractive index sensitivity of 374.40 GHz/RIU (Refractive Index Unit). When VO2 is in the metallic state, the device functions as a band-pass filter, exhibiting a center frequency of 2.01 THz and a 3 dB fractional bandwidth of 0.91 THz. The integration of these dual functionalities within a single terahertz device enhances its utility in both sensing and filtering applications.

Ultrasensitive refractive index sensor based on stainless steel metamaterial

Terahertz metamaterial technology, as an efficient nondestructive testing method, has shown great development potential in biological detection. This paper presents a stainless steel terahertz metamaterial absorber that achieves a near-perfect absorption of incident metamaterial waves with a 99.99% absorption at 2.937 THz. We demonstrate the theoretical discussion about the absorber and the application in sensing. The effect of the metamaterial absorber's structural parameters on the sensing performance is also analyzed. Simulation results show that the sensor can detect analytes with a refractive index between 1.0 and 1.8. Additionally, the performance of the sensor in detecting analytes in three states (solid, liquid, and gas) is analyzed in detail, and the sensitivity and the FoM of the sensor to detect methane are 22.727 THz/RIU and 568.175R I U -1, respectively. In addition, the terahertz sensor has the advantage of wide incident angle insensitivity, maintaining a good sensing performance within a wide manufacturing tolerance range of -10% to 10%. Compared to metal-dielectric-metal or dielectric-metal structures, the proposed sensor adopts stainless steel as the only manufacturing material, which has the advantages of simple structure, low manufacturing costs, and high sensitivity, and has potential application prospects in label-free high-sensitivity biomedical sensing.

High-performance dual-tunable terahertz absorber based on strontium titanate and bulk Dirac semimetal for temperature sensing and switching function

In this study, a perfect metamaterial absorber based on strontium titanate and bulk Dirac semimetals is proposed. When the temperature of strontium titanate was 300K, the dual-band absorptions were 99.74% and 99.99% at 1.227 and 1.552 THz, respectively. The sensitivities based on a transverse magnetic (TM) wave were 0.95 and 1.22 GHz/K; the sensitivity based on a transverse electric (TE) wave was 0.76 GHz/K. The TE and TM waves were modulated by inserting a bulk Dirac semimetal between the concave and convex devices. The modulation depth of the TE wave was 97.9% at 1.1 THz; the extinction ratio was 16.9 dB. The modulation depth of the TE wave at 1.435 THz was 95.9%; the extinction ratio was 13.89 dB. The TM wave modulation depth at 1.552 THz was 95.9%; the extinction ratio was 13.98 dB. Irrespective of a TE or TM wave, the terahertz absorber has good switching and temperature-sensing performance based on strontium titanate and bulk Dirac semimetals as well as broad application prospects in temperature sensing and switching devices.
