Enabling high-power, broadband THz generation with 800-nm pump wavelength

Optimized terahertz generation in BNA organic crystals with chirped Ti:sapphire laser pulses

We report on the efficient generation of intense terahertz radiation from the organic crystal N-benzyl-2-methyl-4-nitroaniline pumped by chirped Ti:sapphire femtosecond laser pulses. The THz energy and spectrum as a function of the pump fluence and duration of the chirped laser pulses are studied systematically. For the appropriate positively chirped pump pulses, a significant boost in the THz generation efficiency by a factor of around 2.5 is achieved, and the enhancement of high-frequency components (>1 THz) shortens the THz pulse duration. Via complete characterization of THz properties and transmitted laser spectra, this nonlinear behavior is attributed to the extended effective interaction length for phase matching as a result of the self-phase modulation of the intense pump laser pulses. Numerical calculations well reproduce the experimental observation. Our results demonstrate a robust, efficient, strong-field (up to several MV/cm) THz source using the common sub-10 mJ and sub-100 fs Ti:sapphire laser systems without optical parametric amplifiers.

Terahertz Emission via Optical Rectification in a Metal-Free Perovskite Crystal

We report on the emission of high-intensity pulsed terahertz radiation from the metal-free halide perovskite single crystal methyl-DABCO ammonium iodide (MDNI) under femtosecond illumination. The power and angular dependence of the THz output implicate optical rectification of the 800 nm pump as the mechanism of THz generation. Further characterization finds that, for certain crystal orientations, the angular dependence of THz emission is modulated by phonon resonances attributable to the motion of the methyl-DABCO moiety. At maximum, the THz emission spectrum of MDNI is free from significant phonon resonances, resulting in THz pulses with a temporal width of <900 fs and a peak-to-peak electric field strength of approximately 0.8 kV cm-1-2 orders of magnitude higher than any other reported halide perovskite emitters. Our results point toward metal-free perovskites as a promising new class of THz emitters that brings to bear many of the advantages enjoyed by other halide perovskite materials. In particular, the broad tunability of optoelectronic properties and ease of fabrication of perovskite materials opens up the possibility of further optimizing the THz emission properties within this material class.

Tilted pulse front pumping techniques for efficient terahertz pulse generation

Optical rectification of femtosecond laser pulses has emerged as the dominant technique for generating single- and few-cycle terahertz (THz) pulses. The advent of the tilted pulse front pumping (TPFP) velocity matching technique, proposed and implemented two decades ago, has ushered in significant advancements of these THz sources, which are pivotal in the realm of THz pump-probe and material control experiments, which need THz pulses with microjoule energies and several hundred kV/cm electric field strengths. Furthermore, these THz sources are poised to play a crucial role in the realization of THz-driven particle accelerators, necessitating millijoule-level pulses with tens of MV/cm electric field strengths. TPFP has enabled the efficient velocity matching in lithium niobate crystals renowned for their extraordinary high nonlinear coefficient. Moreover, its adaptation to semiconductor THz sources has resulted in a two-hundred-times enhancement in conversion efficiency. In this comprehensive review, we present the seminal achievements of the past two decades. We expound on the conventional TPFP setup, delineate its scaling limits, and elucidate the novel generation TPFP configurations proposed to surmount these constraints, accompanied by their preliminary outcomes. Additionally, we provide an in-depth analysis of the THz absorption, refractive index, and nonlinear coefficient spectra of lithium niobate and widely used semiconductors employed as THz generators, which dictate their suitability as THz sources. We underscore the far-reaching advantages of tilted pulse front pumping, not only for LN and semiconductor-based THz sources but also for selected organic crystal-based sources and Yb-laser-pumped GaP sources, previously regarded as velocity-matched in the literature.

High-field THz source centered at 2.6 THz

We demonstrate a table-top high-field terahertz (THz) source based on optical rectification of a collimated near-infrared pulse in gallium phosphide (GaP) to produce peak fields above 300 kV/cm with a spectrum centered at 2.6 THz. The experimental configuration, based on tilted-pulse-front phase matching, is implemented with a phase grating etched directly onto the front surface of the GaP crystal. Although the THz generation efficiency starts showing a saturation onset as the near-infrared pulse energy reaches 0.57 mJ, we can expect our configuration to yield THz peak fields up to 866 kV/cm when a 5 mJ generation NIR pulse is used. This work paves the way towards broadband, high-field THz sources able to access a new class of THz coherent control and nonlinear phenomena driven at frequencies above 2 THz.

Terahertz generation optimization in an OH1 nonlinear organic crystal pumped by a Cr:forsterite laser

We present the results of experimental investigations of terahertz radiation generation conversion efficiency in an OH1 nonlinear organic crystal pumped by femtosecond laser pulses at 1240 nm wavelength. An influence of OH1 crystal thickness on the terahertz generation by optical rectification method was studied. It is shown that the optimal crystal thickness for the maximum conversion efficiency is 1 mm, which agrees with the previously made theoretical estimates.
