Nonlinear propagation dynamics of an ultrashort pulse in a hollow waveguide

Sub-half-cycle field transients from shock-wave-assisted soliton self-compression

We identify an unusual regime of ultrafast nonlinear dynamics in which an optical shock wave couples to soliton self-compression, steepening the tail of the pulse, thus yielding self-compressing soliton transients as short as the field sub-half-cycle. We demonstrate that this extreme pulse self-compression scenario can help generate sub-half-cycle mid-infrared pulses in a broad class of anomalously dispersive optical waveguide systems.

Wavelength scaling of optimal hollow-core fiber compressors in the single-cycle limit

We systematically investigate supercontinuum generation using three-dimensional numerical simulations of nonlinear femtosecond pulse propagation in hollow-core fibers (HCF) at different pump wavelengths ranging from 400 nm to 2 μm. A general design strategy for HCF compressors is presented, maximizing the spectral broadening while preserving high beam quality for given pump pulse energy, duration and wavelength. We show close fitting of the modeled results with simple analytical formulas, enabling the construction of high-energy pulse compressors at the wavelength range of interest. Based on the presented wavelength scaling study, we propose an orthogonally polarized two-color pumping scheme in a single HCF compressor for the coherent synthesis of the electric fields in the sub-cycle regime with mJ level energies.

Adaptive spatial control of fiber modes and their excitation for high-harmonic generation

We present the control of high-harmonic generation (HHG) in hollow fibers using adaptive pulse shaping techniques. The shaping capabilities of our spatial light modulator (SLM) are demonstrated by the excitation of specific fiber modes inside a hollow fiber with a helium-neon laser. Afterwards spatially shaped ultrashort pulses are used to generate phase-matched high-harmonic radiation in a fiber. We show that by controlling the mode structure, we can manipulate the spatial and spectral properties of the generated harmonics.

Hyperbolic shock waves of the optical self-focusing with normal group-velocity dispersion

The theory of focusing light pulses in Kerr media with normal group-velocity dispersion in (2+1) and (3+1) dimensions is revisited. It is shown that pulse splitting introduced by this dispersion follows from shock fronts that develop along hyperbolas separating the region of transverse self-focusing from the domain of temporal dispersion. Justified by a self-similar approach, this property is confirmed by numerical simulations using an adaptive-mesh refinement code.

Pulse contrast enhancement of high-energy pulses by use of a gas-filled hollow waveguide

Using nonlinear ellipse rotation in a gas-filled hollow waveguide, we have increased the pulse contrast of a microjoule femtosecond laser pulse by several orders of magnitude. This scheme offers a number of advantages over competing techniques, including a high degree of tunability that allows for a broad range of input pulse parameters, higher throughput, greater stability, and an output pulse with high spatial quality that is compressible to a quarter of the original temporal width.
