Coherent perfect absorption in chiral metamaterials

All-optical switching based on plasmon-induced Enhancement of Index of Refraction

In quantum optical Enhancement of Index of Refraction (EIR), coherence and quantum interference render the atomic systems to exhibit orders of magnitude higher susceptibilities with vanishing or even negative absorption at their resonances. Here we show the plasmonic analogue of the quantum optical EIR effect in an optical system and further implement this in a linear all-optical switching mechanism. We realize plasmon-induced EIR using a particular plasmonic metasurface consisting of a square array of L-shaped meta-molecules. In contrast to the conventional methods, this approach provides a scheme to modulate the amplitude of incident signals by coherent control of absorption without implementing gain materials or nonlinear processes. Therefore, light is controlled by applying ultra-low intensity at the extreme levels of spatiotemporal localization. In the pursuit of potential applications of linear all-optical switching devices, this scheme may introduce an effective tool for improving the modulation strength of optical modulators and switches through the amplification of input signals at ultra-low power.

Terahertz spin-selective perfect absorption enabled by quasi-bound states in the continuum

Spin-selective absorption is broadly applicable to numerous photonic devices. Here, based on a stereoscopic full metallic resonator array, a terahertz chiral metasurface with a single-layer structure is proposed and numerically demonstrated. By employing the coupled-mode theory, we demonstrate that the chiral metasurface can near-perfectly absorb one circularly polarized wave in the quasi-bound states in the continuum-induced critical coupling region but non-resonantly reflect its counterparts. Interestingly, the linewidths and handedness of the proposed chiral metasurface can be flexibly controlled by an in-plane symmetry perturbation. Our designs might offer an alternative strategy to develop chiral metasurfaces apart from conventional methods and might stimulate many potential applications for emerging terahertz technologies.

Investigation of acoustic plasmons in vertically stacked metal/dielectric/graphene heterostructures for multiband coherent perfect absorption

Coherent absorption, as the time-reversed counterpart to laser, has been widely proposed recently to flexibly modulate light-matter interactions in two-dimensional materials. However, the multiband coherent perfect absorption (CPA) in atomically thin materials still has been elusive. We exploit the multiband CPA in vertically stacked metal/dielectric/graphene heterostructures via ultraconfined acoustic plasmons which can reduce the photon wavelength by a factor of about 70 and thus enable multiple-order resonances on a graphene ribbon of finite width. Under the illumination of two counter-propagating coherent beams, the two-stage coupling scheme is used for exciting multispectral acoustic plasmon resonances on the heterostructure simultaneously, thereby contributing to the ultimate multiband CPA in the mid-infrared region. The strong dependence of the nearly linear dispersion of acoustic plasmons on the chemical potential in graphene and the separation between the metal and the graphene allows the tunability in spectral positions of absorption peaks. Intriguingly, the absorption of each resonant peak is continuously tuned by varying the relative amplitude of two counter-propagating beams, and even their phase difference, respectively. The maximum modulation depth of 4.46*105 is observed. The scattering matrix is employed to demonstrate the principle of CPA and the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations are used for elucidating the flexible tunability. More importantly, the multiband coherent absorber is robust to the incident angle, and thus undoubtedly benefits extensive applications on optoelectronic and engineering technology areas for modulators and optical switches.

Identification of the absorption processes in periodic plasmonic structures using energy absorption interferometry

Power dissipation in electromagnetic absorbers is a quadratic function of the incident fields. To characterize an absorber, one needs to deal with the coupling that may occur between different excitations. Energy absorption interferometry (EAI) is a technique that highlights the independent degrees of freedom through which a structure can absorb energy: the natural absorption modes of the structure. The coupling between these modes vanishes. In this paper, we use the EAI formalism to analyze different kinds of plasmonic periodic absorbers while rigorously accounting for the coupling: resonant golden patches on a grounded dielectric slab, parallel free-standing silver wires, and a silver slab of finite thickness. The EAI formalism is used to identify the physical processes that mediate absorption in the near and far field. First, we demonstrate that the angular absorption, which is classically used to characterize periodic absorbers in the far field and which neglects the coupling between different plane waves, is only valid under stringent conditions (subwavelength periodicity, far-field excitation, and negligible coupling between the two possible polarizations). Using EAI, we show how the dominant absorption channels can be identified through the signature of the absorption modes of the structure, while rigorously accounting for the coupling. We then exploit these channels to improve absorption. We show that long-range processes can be exploited to enhance the spatial selectivity, while short-range processes can be exploited to improve absorptivity over wide angles of incidence. Finally, we show that by simply adding scatterers with the proper periodicity on top of the absorber, the absorption can be increased by more than 1 order of magnitude.

Tunable polarization-independent dual-band coherent perfect absorber based on metal-graphene nanoring structure

A dual-band polarization-independent coherent perfect absorber(CPA) based on metal-graphene nanostructure is proposed, which is composed of golden nanorings with different sizes on graphene monolayer. Based on the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) solutions, coherent perfect absorptions of the metal-graphene CPA are achieved at frequencies of 50.54 THz and 43.60 THz, which are resulted from the excited surface plasmon resonance induced by different size nanorings. Through varying the relative phase of two incident countering-propagating beams, the absorption peaks are all-optically tuned from 98.3 % and 98.4 % to nearly 0, respectively. By changing the gate-controlled Fermi energy of the graphene layer, the resonance frequencies of the CPA are tuned simultaneously without changing the geometrical parameters. And polarization independence of the metal-graphene CPA is revealed due to the center symmetry of nanoring structure. The electrical tunability of resonance frequency and polarization independence enable the proposed CPA to be widely applied in optoelectronic and engineering technology areas for tunable active multiple-band regulation and control.

Polarization-controlled multifrequency coherent perfect absorption in stereometamaterials

We experimentally demonstrate polarization-controlled multifrequency coherent perfect absorption in stereometamaterials with twisted asymmetrically split rings. The coupling effects in stereometamaterials lead to the mode hybridization and thus multiple electric and magnetic resonances. The coherent perfect absorptions of electric and magnetic modes in stereometamaterials have been verified to be individually switched on/off by an interferometric effect of two counter-propagating coherent beams. The alternation of two orthogonal polarization states enables direct modulation of the operation frequencies of coherent perfect absorptions in both microwave and optical metamaterials. The work provides an opportunity to manipulate coherent perfect absorption and is helpful to design tunable multifrequency absorbers.

Coherent control of double deflected anomalous modes in ultrathin trapezoid-shaped slit metasurface

Coherent light-matter interaction in ultrathin metamaterials has been demonstrated to dynamically modulate intensity, polarization and propagation direction of light. The gradient metasurface with a transverse phase variation usually exhibits an anomalous refracted beam of light dictated by so-called generalized Snell’s law. However, less attention has been paid to coherent control of the metasurface with multiple anomalous refracted beams. Here we propose an ultrathin gradient metasurface with single trapezoid-shaped slot antenna as its building block that allows one normal and two deflected transmitted beams. It is numerically demonstrated that such metasurface with multiple scattering modes can be coherently controlled to modulate output intensities by changing the relative phase difference between two counterpropagating coherent beams. Each mode can be coherently switched on/off and two deflected anomalous beams can be synchronously dictated by the phase difference. The coherent control effect in the trapezoid-shaped slit metasurface will offer a promising opportunity for multichannel signals modulation, multichannel sensing and wave front shaping.
