High-Q quadrupolar plasmonic lattice resonances in horizontal metal-insulator-metal gratings

Ultrahigh Q surface lattice resonance supported by a U-shaped resonant ring nanoarray

We achieved an ultrahigh Q surface lattice resonance (SLR) using a conventional U-shaped split ring resonator (U-SRR) array. Numerical results confirmed by semi-analytical analysis show that with the transmission resonance amplitude up to 0.8, the Q-factor of the SLR can still surpass 104. The physical mechanisms of the ultrahigh Q-factor were also investigated. Besides the radiation suppression provided by conventional SLR, the unique geometry of the U-SRR can further offer dual radiation suppression mechanisms: reduction of the dipole moment and excitation of the in-plane quadrupole. We expect that the proposed ultrahigh Q SLR platform will be explored for more flexible and advanced nanoscale devices.

Multiple surface lattice resonances of overlapping nanoparticle arrays with different lattice spacing

Multiple surface lattice resonances generated with nanoparticle arrays are promising to enhance light-matter interactions at different spectral positions simultaneously, and it is important to tailor these resonances to desired frequencies for practical applications such as multi-modal nanolasing. To this end, this study proposes to generate multiple surface lattice resonances using overlapping nanoparticle arrays with different lattice spacing. Both full-wave numerical simulations and analytical coupled dipole approximation calculations reveal that for the overlapping structures composed with two different gold nanosphere arrays, both surface lattice resonances for the element structures are effectively excited. Considering that the optical responses are governed by the dipole-dipole interactions between the nanoparticles, it is interesting to find that the multiple surface lattice resonances are almost invariant by adjusting the relative shifts between the two arrays, which can be useful to tailor the high-quality factor resonances to desired spectral positions. In addition, due to the same reason, it is also shown that the multiple surface lattice resonances can be further finely tuned by selectively removing specific nanoparticles in the array. We anticipate that the tolerance to generate multiple surface lattice resonances and the flexible tunability make the overlapping nanoparticle arrays useful to design high performance linear and nonlinear nanophotonic devices.

Excitation of out-of-plane lattice plasmons in dislocated nanostructures through near-field coupling

Out-of-plane lattice plasmons (OLPs) show great potential in realizing high-quality factors due to the strong interparticle coupling. However, the strict conditions of oblique incidence bring challenges to experimental observation. This Letter proposes a new, to the best of our knowledge, mechanism to generate OLPs: through near-field coupling. Notably, with specially designed nanostructure dislocation, the strongest OLP can be achieved at normal incidence. The direction of energy flux of the OLPs is mainly determined by the wave vectors of Rayleigh anomalies. We further found that the OLP exhibits symmetry-protected bound states in the continuum characteristic, which explains the failure of previously reported symmetric structures to excite OLPs at normal incidence. Our work extends the understanding of the OLP and brings benefit to promote the flexible design of functional plasmonic devices.

Fano-Like Resonance of Heat-Reconfigurable Silicon Grating Metasurface Tuned by Laser-Induced Graphene

We propose a heat-reconfigurable metasurface composed of the silicon-based gold grating. The asymmetric Fano-like line shape is formed due to the mutual coupling of the local surface plasmon (LSP) in the gap between the two layers of Au gratings and the surface propagating plasmon (SPP) on the surface of the Au gratings. Then, we effectively regulate the Fano resonance by applying a bias voltage to laser-induced graphene (LIG), to generate Joule heat, so that the resonant dip of one mode of the Fano resonance can shift up to 28.5 nm. In contrast, the resonant dip of the other mode barely changes. This effectively regulates the coupling between two resonant modes in Fano resonance. Our study presents a simple and efficient method for regulating Fano-like interference in the near-infrared band.

High-Q out-of-plane Mie electric dipole surface lattice resonances in silicon metasurfaces

Metasurfaces supporting surface lattice resonances (SLRs) with narrow linewidths and high quality factors have become an exciting platform for diverse applications. Here we numerically show, for the first time, that narrowband out-of-plane Mie electric dipole SLRs (ED-SLRs) can be excited together with the in-plane ED-SLRs and magnetic-dipole SLRs in periodic silicon disks under oblique incidence with TM polarization. Simulation results show that the out-of-plane ED-SLR can have four times larger quality factors than the in-plane one under the same excitation conditions, and can have distinct near-field distributions and dispersion relationships compared with the plasmonic counterpart in periodic metallic nanodisks. We further show that the out-of-plane ED-SLR can define a symmetry-protected bound state in the continuum (BIC) at normal incidence, which transits into a quasi-BIC when the excitation field symmetry is slightly broken by the small incidence angle. We expect this work will advance the engineering of Mie SLRs for applications in metasurface-based nanolasers, nonlinear optics, and optical sensing.

THz absorbers with an ultrahigh Q-factor empowered by the quasi-bound states in the continuum for sensing application

The exceptional resonances excited by symmetry-protected quasi-bound states in the continuum (QBICs) have provided significant potential in high-sensitive sensing applications. Herein, we have proposed a type of metal-insulator-metal (MIM) absorbers supported by QBIC-induced resonances, and the ideal Q-factors of QBIC-induced resonances can be enhanced up to 10⁵ in the THz regime. The coupled mode theory and the multipole scattering theory are employed to thoroughly interpret the QBIC-induced absorption mechanism. Furthermore, the refractive index sensing capacities of the as-presented absorbers have been investigated, where the maximum values of the sensing sensitivity and figure of merit (FOM) can reach up to 187 GHz per refractive index unit and 286, respectively. Therefore, it is believed that the proposed absorbers enabled by QBIC-induced resonances hold promising potential in a broad range of highly demanding sensing applications.

Theoretical study of extremely narrow plasmonic surface lattice resonances observed by MIM nanogratings under normal incidence in asymmetric environments

Nanoarray structures can support plasmonic surface lattice resonances (SLRs) with extremely narrow linewidths and huge electric field enhancement features, which are attractive applications in nanolasers, biochemical sensors, and nonlinear optics. However, current nanoarray structures located in an asymmetric dielectric environment with a refractive index contrast of 1.00/1.52 of the superstrate/substrate excite much poorer SLRs under normal incidence, which largely limits their application range. In this work, we report extremely narrow SLRs supported by one-dimensional metal-insulator-metal nanograting in asymmetric dielectric environments. The simulation results show that an SLRs with linewidth of 3.26 nm and quality factor of 233.2 can be excited under normal incidence. This high-quality SLRs is attributed to the interference formation between the out-of-plane dipole resonance mode and the out-of-plane quadrupole resonance mode. We also show that the resonance wavelength and quality factor can be tuned by changing the structure geometry and period, and we calculate the normal incidence SLRs quality factor to be up to 248 in 1.33/1.52 and 250 in 1.45/1.52. We expect the SLRs of this work to find potential applications in asymmetric dielectric environments.

Extremely Narrow and Actively Tunable Mie Surface Lattice Resonances in GeSbTe Metasurfaces: Study

Mie surface lattice resonances (SLRs) supported by periodic all-dielectric nanoparticles emerge from the radiative coupling of localized Mie resonances in individual nanoparticles through Rayleigh anomaly diffraction. To date, it remains challenging to achieve narrow bandwidth and active tuning simultaneously. In this work, we report extremely narrow and actively tunable electric dipole SLRs (ED-SLRs) in Ge₂Se₂Te₅ (GST) metasurfaces. Simulation results show that, under oblique incidence with TE polarization, ED-SLRs with extremely narrow linewidth down to 12 nm and high quality factor up to 409 can be excited in the mid-infrared regime. By varying the incidence angle, the ED-SLR can be tuned over an extremely large spectral region covering almost the entire mid-infrared regime. We further numerically show that, by changing the GST crystalline fraction, the ED-SLR can be actively tuned, leading to nonvolatile, reconfigurable, and narrowband filtering, all-optical multilevel modulation, or all-optical switching with high performance. We expect that this work will advance the engineering of Mie SLRs and will find intriguing applications in optical telecommunication, networks, and microsystems.
