Abstract
We present a novel comprehensive literature review of studies of the psychosocial functioning (PF) and quality of life (QoL) of patients with childhood glaucoma and their caregivers. Our findings demonstrate variable study quality and approach, as well as inconsistent results relating to the association of glaucoma-specific factors and sociodemographic variables with measured PF and QoL. Future studies should focus on the development of culturally cognizant and standardized assessment tools, execution of multi-center longitudinal studies with global representation, evaluation of PF and QoL among siblings and childhood glaucoma providers, and implementation of interventions to improve patient and caregiver PF and QoL.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Receiving a diagnosis of a child with untreatable visual impairment (VI) may have a negative impact on parents and caregivers, and affect their quality of life (QoL). AIMS To use a qualitative research approach to determine the impact that caregiving a child with a VI has on the QoL of caregivers in Catalonia (Spain). METHODS An observational study was designed in which nine parents of children with VI (6 mothers) were recruited following an intentional sampling scheme. In-depth interviews were conducted, and a thematic analysis was performed to identify main themes and subthemes. The QoL domains defined in the questionnaire WHOQoL-BREF guided data interpretation. RESULTS An overarching theme was defined (the weight on one's shoulders), as well as two main themes (obstacles race and emotional impact) and seven subthemes. QoL was negatively affected by a general lack of knowledge and understanding regarding VI in children and its implications for children and caregivers, whereas social support, gaining knowledge, or cognitive reappraisal had a positive effect. CONCLUSIONS Caregiving for children with VI affects all QoL domains, resulting in persistent psychological distress. Both administrations and health care providers are encouraged to develop strategies to assist caregivers in their demanding roles.

Abstract
Background Vision provides crucial information for parent-child attunement that scaffolds social development from the first months of life. Congenital blindness might affect both parental wellbeing and children's behavior during parent-child interaction. In this study, we compared families of young children with total versus partial blindness to understand the link between residual vision, parenting stress and perceived social support, and children's behavior during parent-child interaction. Methods Participants were 42 white parents (21 fathers and 21 mothers) and their congenitally blind children (14 females, mean age = 14.81 months, SD = 10.46) with no co-occurring disability, recruited at the Robert Hollman Foundation rehabilitation centers in Italy. Parents' scores on the Parenting Stress Index and Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support questionnaires, as well as children's behaviors signaling joint engagement during video-recorded episodes of parent-child interaction, were compared between the Total Blindness (TB, n = 12 children with no light perception or light perception in the dark but no quantifiable visual acuity) and Partial Blindness (PB, n = 9 children with a residual visual acuity below 3/60) groups. Results We found that parents of TB children had higher parenting stress and lower perceived social support scores than parents of PB children. In fathers, total stress and stress linked to perceiving the child as difficult negatively correlated with perceived support from friends. There was no difference in the time TB and PB children spent displaying joint engagement behaviors during parent-child interaction. However, TB children directed their gaze and face less often toward their parents than PB children. We observed a trend of association between this behavior and maternal stress. Conclusion These preliminary results suggest that the complete absence of vision from birth has adverse effects on stress linked to parenting and parental perceived social support. These findings support the importance of early family-centered interventions that extend to the parents' communities and facilitate the parent-child dyad's communication through non-visual behaviors. Replication is warranted in larger and more diverse samples.

Abstract
The presence of childhood vision impairment has cascading effects on educational provision and global development across cognitive, physical, and mental health domains. Effective, appropriate, and targeted support in education is legislated across the United Kingdom, influenced by the ‘access to learning, learning to access’ model. Despite reasonable adjustment and specialist provision legislature, anecdotal parental reports suggest inconsistent and insufficient provision culminating in poor physical and mental health outcomes for school-aged children and young people with vision impairment in the United Kingdom. This pilot study aimed to evaluate the perceived effectiveness of provisional arrangement/specialist support from a parental viewpoint. We examined the questionnaire responses of parents/caregivers of children and young people with vision impairment to harness their views regarding provisional entitlement. An online questionnaire was developed in collaboration with parents/caregivers of children with vision impairment who identified a distinct need for research in this field. Forty-six parents/caregivers completed the questionnaire. Most parents reported their child accessing specialised provision; however, frequency of provision and qualification of staff administering provision was inconsistent. Parents reported that available provision more negatively impacted their child’s mental health, and resultingly, most parents lacked confidence in the arrangements their child received. We concluded that parental perception of provisional arrangements is seemingly influenced by the quality of the team supporting their child in educational domains. Future work triangulating parental views with that of the children receiving the support, and support staff, is needed for corroboration.

Abstract
PURPOSE To identify and characterize the psychological impact of caregiving for children with eye disease. Awareness of the caregiving experience and insight into the factors related to caregiver burden is necessary to support high-quality ophthalmic care and develop supportive interventions. METHODS The databases MEDLINE (Ovid), CINAHL, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, PsychINFO, PubMed, and Google Scholar were queried up to June 25, 2021. Studies included assessed the psychological impact of providing care to children with eye diseases. A risk of bias assessment was performed according to the Modified Downs and Black Checklist. Demographic data and measures of burden were extracted and tabulated. RESULTS A total of 2,823 articles were screened, 28 underwent data extraction, and 7 were included in the meta-analysis. The meta-analysis indicated significant levels of burden (40% mild, 95% CI: [0.28 to 0.53]; 59% moderate, 95% CI: [0.36 to 0.82]; 7% severe, 95% CI: [0.02 to 0.11]) and depression (26% mild, 95% CI: [0.17 to 0.35]; 8% moderate, 95% CI: [0.03 to 0.14]); 11% severe, 95% CI:[0.03 to 0.10]). Interventions such as educational programs, life skills training programs, and other home-based early intervention programs were shown to improve psychological well-being of families. CONCLUSIONS Caregivers experience significant levels of burden and depression, which may, in turn, affect the level of ophthalmic care they can provide for their children. Further studies investigating educational or psychological interventions for parents are needed, because the small number of studies that investigated these types of interventions have reported reduced parental stress and improved well-being. Abstract
OBJECTIVES Polyhandicap (PLH), defined by a combination of profound intellectual impairment and serious motor deficits, is a severe condition with complex disabilities. In France, care of the large majority of PLH individuals is managed in specialised rehabilitation centres or residential facilities, but some of PLH individuals are cared for at home. The aims of this study were to assess the self-perceived burden among informal caregivers of PLH individuals and to identify potential determinants of this burden. DESIGN Cross-sectional study (Neuropaediatric Department, Trousseau Hospital, Paris, France). SETTINGS PLH children were recruited from a specialised paediatric/neurological department. PARTICIPANTS The selection criteria of caregivers were age above 18 years and being the PLH individual's next of kin. OUTCOMES MEASURES From March 2015 to December 2016, data were collected from the caregivers, including sociodemographical data, health status, psycho-behavioural data (quality of life, mood disorders and coping) and self-perceived burden. In addition, the health status of the PLH individual was collected. Relationships between the burden scores and potential determinants were tested (correlations coefficients, Mann-Whitney tests, generalised estimating equations models). RESULTS Eighty-four children were eligible; 77 families returned their questionnaire. The informal caregivers of PLH children experienced a high level of perceived burden (scores ranged from 55±20 to 81±12). Eighty per cent of them had more than 5 hours of daily caregiving and 51% of them had to get up more than twice during the night. The main factors associated with caregiver burden were age, financial issues, health status, daily care and coping strategies. The patients' health status was not associated with caregiver burden. CONCLUSIONS Some of the caregiver burden determinants might be modifiable. These findings should help healthcare workers and health-decision makers implement specific and appropriate interventions. Abstract
Background Chronic diseases in childhood can affect the physical and mental health of patients and their families. The literature on pediatric chronic diseases has found important associations between the sociodemographic variables of children and their caregivers and negative health consequences in families. Methods In this study, we aimed to design and validate a questionnaire on sociodemographic variables that would be useful for research on pediatric chronic diseases; and investigate the relationship between sociodemographic variables and psychosocial variables among family caregivers. First, we created a questionnaire that consists of 20 demographic, medical, and family-related items based on a literature review and expert evaluations. This questionnaire was then validated by 335 expert reviewers in the field of Social Work, who work daily with the families of patients with chronic diseases in 10 National Institutes of Health of Mexico. The validation was based on three empirical criteria created specifically for this study, and the reviewers evaluated the usefulness, relevance, and permanence of the items. In a second cross-sectional, correlational and comparative study, a total of 446 family caregivers of children with chronic diseases were interviewed, and they completed the Sociodemographic Variables Questionnaire for research on family caregivers of children with chronic sociodemographic diseases and four psychosocial measurement instruments for evaluating anxiety, depression, caregiver burden and quality of life. Results Based on the results of the first study, we created the Sociodemographic Variables Questionnaire (Q-SV) for research on family caregivers of children with chronic diseases, and it includes 17 items that assess demographic, medical, and family characteristics. The results of the second study showed that the 17 sociodemographic variables obtained in the validation by expert judges are useful for measuring and evaluating the relationship between psychosocial variables in families of children with chronic diseases. Conclusions Psychosocial and sociodemographic factors are relevant for the development of research processes for families that care for children with chronic diseases.

Abstract
This study examined differences in future anxiety (FA) among mothers and fathers of children with and without developmental disabilities (DD), and it also analyzed differences in FA within the group of parents of children with DD taking into consideration parent-related factors and child-related factors. A group of 167 parents of children with DD were compared to a group of 103 parents of children with typical development. The group with DD included children with autism spectrum disorders, sensory disorders, and intellectual disability. Parents completed the Future Anxiety Scale-FAS1. Mothers of children with DD had a higher general level of FA than fathers of children with and without DD. Mothers of children with DD reported higher anxiety about their future health and the meaning of their future life than fathers of children with DD. For parents of children with DD, those with lower education, male children, and older children reported higher FA. The group at risk of highest general FA are mothers of children with DD, especially those without a professional career. Similarly, parents of teenagers and/or sons with DD are at increased risk of FA.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Currently, information on factors associated with anxiety in family caregivers of children with chronic diseases is unavailable, indicating a significant gap in the literature. Therefore, this study aims to identify the psychosocial and sociodemographic variables associated with anxiety in family caregivers of children with chronic diseases. METHODS In 2018, a nonprobability sample of 446 family caregivers was recruited at the National Institute of Health in Mexico City. The participants completed a sociodemographic variable questionnaire, clinical questions, and 18 psychosocial assessment scales, including a scale to assess family caregiver anxiety. RESULTS Family caregiver anxiety was correlated with almost all psychosocial variables and one out of three clinical variables but with none of the sociodemographic variables. Furthermore, a multiple linear regression model with five psychosocial variables was established to predict family caregiver anxiety. CONCLUSIONS Some psychosocial variables have effects on caregiver anxiety that are relevant for interventions. Clinical interventions should be implemented based on the psychosocial variables associated with family caregiver anxiety.

Abstract
AIMS To describe the experience of parents caregiving children with visual impairment (VI), to determine how their quality of life (QoL) is assessed, and to summarize QoL indicators through a review of the literature. METHODS A thematic search through PubMed, PsycINFO, ProQuest and ERIC databases was performed of articles published in English in peer-reviewed journals between 1996 and 2016. Publications were included if they referred to both children or adolescents with VI and their parents, or the family context. The complete selection process disclosed 37 papers suitable for review. RESULTS Researchers mainly used ad hoc interviews and questionnaires to investigate this topic. Two specific tools, the CarCGQoL (congenital glaucoma) and the OTI (congenital cataract), were identified. Most of the information collected referred to the parents' opinion concerning professional services, their needs and worries, the impact of VI on their emotional well-being and the strategies to assist parents to cope and adjust to the situation. CONCLUSIONS The experience of caring for a child with VI is mainly influenced by psychosocial factors. Information and guidance to understand the child's visual condition are insufficient, and the available resources reinforce concerns of caregivers regarding the child's opportunities, expressed as negative emotional reactions.
