Research on photocatalytic CO2 conversion to renewable synthetic fuels based on localized surface plasmon resonance: current progress and future perspectives

Due to its desirable optoelectronic properties, localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) can hopefully play a promising role in photocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR). In this review, mechanisms and applications of LSPR effect in this field are introduced in detail.

Effect of Pluronic P103 Concentration on the Simple Synthesis of Ag and Au Nanoparticles and Their Application in Anatase-TiO2 Decoration for Its Use in Photocatalysis

Silver and gold nanoparticles were synthesized under environmentally-friendly reaction conditions by using a biodegradable copolymer and water as a solvent. The triblock copolymer Pluronic P103 was utilized as a stabilizing agent or soft template to produce Ag and Au nanoparticles (NPs) of different sizes. Moreover, in the synthesis of Au NPs, the polymer acted as a reducing agent, decreasing the number of reagents used and consequently the residues produced, hence, rendering the procedure less complicated. It was observed that as the concentration of the polymer increased, the size of the metallic NPs augmented as well. However, AgNPs and AuNPs prepared with 1 and 10 wt% Pluronic P103, respectively, showed a significant decrease in particle size due to the presence of polymeric soft templates. The hybrid materials (metal/polymer) were characterized by UV-Vis spectroscopy, DLS, and TEM. The pre-synthesized nanoparticles were employed to decorate anatase-TiO2, and the composites were characterized by DRS, XRD, BET surface area measurements, the TEM technique with the EDS spectrum, and XPS spectroscopy to demonstrate NPs superficial incorporation. Finally, methylene blue was used as a probe molecule to evidence the effect of NPs decoration in its photocatalytic degradation. The results showed that the presence of the NPs positively affected methylene blue degradation, achieving 96% and 97% removal by utilizing TAg0.1 and TAu10, respectively, in comparison to bare anatase-TiO2 (77%).

From 0-dimension to 1-dimensions: Au nanocrystals as versatile plasmonic photocatalyst for broadband light induced RAFT polymerization

Gold nanoparticles and nanorods were utilized as the catalyst for photo-induced RAFT polymerization, because of their strong LSPR performance.

Electronic Structure and Band Alignments of Various Phases of Titania Using the Self-Consistent Hybrid Density Functional and DFT+U Methods

To understand, and thereby rationally optimize photoactive interfaces, it is of great importance to elucidate the electronic structures and band alignments of these interfaces. For the first-principles investigation of these properties, conventional density functional theory (DFT) requires a solution to mitigate its well-known bandgap underestimation problem. Hybrid functional and Hubbard U correction are computationally efficient methods to overcome this limitation, however, the results are largely dependent on the choice of parameters. In this study, we employed recently developed self-consistent approaches, which enable non-empirical determination of the parameters, to investigate TiO₂ interfacial systems-the most prototypical photocatalytic systems. We investigated the structural, electronic, and optical properties of rutile and anatase phases of TiO₂. We found that the self-consistent hybrid functional method predicts the most reliable structural and electronic properties that are comparable to the experimental and high-level GW results. Using the validated self-consistent hybrid functional method, we further investigated the band edge positions between rutile and anatase surfaces in a vacuum and electrolyte medium, by coupling it with the Poisson-Boltzmann theory. This suggests the possibility of a transition from the straddling-type to the staggered-type band alignment between rutile and anatase phases in the electrolyte medium, manifested by the formation of a Stern-like layer at the interfaces. Our study not only confirms the efficacy of the self-consistent hybrid functional method by reliably predicting the electronic structure of photoactive interfaces, but also elucidates a potentially dramatic change in the band edge positions of TiO₂ in aqueous electrolyte medium which can extensively affect its photophysical properties.
