Sorption and desorption kinetics of Np(V) on magnetite and hematite

Kinetics of neptunium sorption and desorption in the presence of aluminum (hydr)oxide minerals: Evidence for multi-step desorption at low pH

Kinetics analyses of sorption and desorption provide important insight into reaction mechanisms occurring at the mineral-water interface. They are also needed to determine when equilibrium is achieved, identify intermediate chemical species, and inform models describing neptunium mobility. Neptunium sorption to and desorption from four different aluminum (hydr)oxides - bayerite (α-Al(OH)₃), gibbsite (γ-Al(OH)₃), corundum (α-Al₂O₃), and γ-alumina (γ-Al₂O₃) - were investigated as a function of mineral concentration (5 - 170 m² L^-1), neptunium concentration (10^-9 - 10^-7 M), and pH (5.5 - 10.5). Neptunium sorption was characterized by a two-step reaction with an initial fast sorption step occurring within minutes followed by a slower equilibrium process, which was attributed to initial sorption of neptunium to a small number of strong sorption sites followed by sorption of neptunium to a larger number of weak sorption sites. The kinetics data were modeled using the linear and non-linear forms of the pseudo-first and pseudo-second order rate equations and the goodness of fit parameters were compared. Non-linear pseudo-second order rate constants described neptunium sorption to aluminum (hydr)oxides most accurately and were used to determine the reaction orders with respect to mineral concentration and [H⁺]. Neptunium desorption experiments demonstrated that the desorption mechanism changed as a function of pH and that the forward and reverse reactions were not equivalent. At pH ≥ 7.5, desorption reached steady-state within an hour and was accurately described by the non-linear pseudo-second order rate equations. A desorption plateau was observed at pH 5.5 that could not be described by either pseudo-first or -second order kinetics, suggesting the possibility of a multi-step desorption reaction. The comparatively slow desorption kinetics observed here suggests that sorbed neptunium could be slowly released back into the aqueous phase and act as a continuous source of contamination to the environment.

In situ spectroscopic identification of neptunium(V) inner-sphere complexes on the hematite-water interface

Hematite plays a decisive role in regulating the mobility of contaminants in rocks and soils. The Np(V) reactions at the hematite-water interface were comprehensively investigated by a combined approach of in situ vibrational spectroscopy, X-ray absorption spectroscopy and surface complexation modeling. A variety of sorption parameters such as Np(V) concentration, pH, ionic strength, and the presence of bicarbonate was considered. Time-resolved IR spectroscopic sorption experiments at the iron oxide-water interface evidenced the formation of a single monomer Np(V) inner-sphere sorption complex. EXAFS provided complementary information on bidentate edge-sharing coordination. In the presence of atmospherically derived bicarbonate the formation of the bis-carbonato inner-sphere complex was confirmed supporting previous EXAFS findings.1 The obtained molecular structure allows more reliable surface complexation modeling of recent and future macroscopic data. Such confident modeling is mandatory for evaluating water contamination and for predicting the fate and migration of radioactive contaminants in the subsurface environment as it might occur in the vicinity of a radioactive waste repository or a reprocessing plant.

Sorption coefficients and molecular mechanisms of Pu, U, Np, Am and Tc to Fe (hydr)oxides: a review

Pu, U, Np, Am and Tc are among the major risk drivers at nuclear waste management facilities throughout the world. Furthermore, uranium mining and milling operations have generated an enormous legacy of radioactively contaminated soils and groundwater. The sorption process of radionulcides onto ubiquitous Fe (hydr)oxides (FHOs; hematite, magnetite, goethite and ferrihydrite) is one of the most vital geochemical processes controlling the transport and fate of radionuclides and nuclear wastes in the subsurface zones. Meanwhile, understanding molecular-level chemical speciation of radionuclides onto FHOs is crucial to model their behavior in subsurface environments, and to develop new technologies for nuclear waste treatment and long-term remediation strategies for contaminated soils and groundwater. This review article aims (1) to provide risk or performance assessment modelers with macroscopic distribution coefficient (K(d)) data of Pu, U, Np, Am and Tc onto FHOs under different conditions (pH, radionuclide concentration, solution ion strength, sorbent loading, partial pressure of CO(2) (P CO(2)), equilibrium time) pertinent to environmental and engineered systems, and (2) to provide a microscopic or molecular-level understanding of the chemical speciation and sorption processes of these radionuclides to FHOs.

Sorption and reduction of neptunium(V) on the surface of iron oxides

Sorption and desorption experiments of Np on magnetite and hematite under aerobic and anaerobic conditions were carried out to investigate the possibility of reduction of Np(V) to Np(IV) at pH 4 to 8 within 7 days. The amount of sorbed Np on magnetite under anaerobic conditions was about 2 or 3 times greater than that under aerobic conditions. Furthermore, the results of desorption experiments indicated that the dominant sorption behavior of Np on magnetite under anaerobic conditions was quite different from that under aerobic conditions. The oxidation state of Np sorbed on the iron oxides was determined by extraction technique using 0.5 M TTA in xylene and 2.0 M HNO3solution from the solid phase after sorption experiment. 90% and 10% of extracted Np was Np(IV) for magnetite system under anaerobic and aerobic conditions, respectively. On the other hand, almost 100% of extracted Np was Np(V) for hematite system under both aerobic and anaerobic conditions. These results indicated that Np(V) was reduced to Np(IV) by Fe(II) in magnetite.

Redox reaction between Np(V) and Fe(II) was also studied in homogeneous solution without solid to decide if Fe(II) ions released from magnetite into silution or Fe(II) on the solid cause the reduction. Only 6% of Np(V) was reduced by Fe(II) at pH=4 and 6 even after 7 days. According to this result, it was conjectured that the reduction of Np(V) to Np(IV) takes place not in the liquid phase by Fe(II) ion but on the surface of magnetite.

In situ spectroscopic evidence for neptunium(V)-carbonate inner-sphere and outer-sphere ternary surface complexes on hematite surfaces

Np(V) surface speciation on hematite surfaces at pH 7-9 under pC2 = 10(-3.45) atm was investigated using X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). In situ XAS analyses suggest that bis-carbonato inner-sphere and tris-carbonato outer-sphere ternary surface species coexist at the hematite-water interface at pH 7-8.8, and the fraction of outer-sphere species gradually increases from 27 to 54% with increasing pH from 7 to 8.8. The results suggest that the heretofore unknown Np(V)-carbonato ternary surface species may be important in predicting the fate and transport of Np(V) in the subsurface environment down gradient of high-level nuclear waste respositories.

Interfacial interactions between Np(V) and manganese oxide minerals manganite and hausmannite

Manganese oxides, present as minor phases in the vadose zone, have been previously shown to sequester large quantities of plutonium under environmental conditions. We are now continuing these studies with Np(V). Sorption onto manganite (MnOOH) and hausmannite (Mn3O4) at solid-to-solution ratios of 2.5-3.3 mg/mL has been studied as a function of neptunium concentration and pH. The sorption of Np increased as a function of pH for both minerals, attaining a maximum at neutral pH, and then decreased with increasing alkalinity. X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (XAFS), taken at the Np L(III)-edge, has been used to determine the oxidation state of the sorbed Np. Our experimental results indicate reduction of the Np(V) because of interaction with the X-ray beam. These findings significantly impact the interpretation of results reported elsewhere on Np(V) investigated though the use of high-intensity X-ray beams.

Molecular interfacial reactions between Pu(VI) and manganese oxide minerals manganite and hausmannite

The sorption of Pu(VI) onto manganite (MnOOH) and hausmannite (Mn3O4) was studied as a function of time, solution pH, and initial plutonium concentration. Kinetic experiments indicate that the surface complexation of plutonium occurs over the first 24 h of contact with the mineral surface. The sorption increases with pH beginning at pH 3 until it reaches a maximum value of 100% at pH 8 (0.0011-0.84 micromol of Pu/m2 of manganite and 0.98-1.2 micromol of Pu/m2 of hausmannite) and then decreases over the pH range from 8 to 10. The ratio of solid to solution was 10 mg/mL for manganite experiments and 4 mg/mL for hausmannite samples. Carbonate was not excluded from the experiments. The amount of plutonium removed from the solution by the minerals is determined by a combination of factors including the plutonium solution species, the surface charge of the mineral, and the mineral surface area. X-ray absorption fine structure taken at the Pu L(III) edge were compared to plutonium standard spectra and showed that Pu(VI) was reduced to Pu(IV) after contact with the minerals. Plutonium sorption to the mineral surface is consistent with an inner-sphere configuration, and no evidence of PuO2 precipitation is observed. The reduction and complexation of Pu(VI) by manganese minerals has direct implications on possible migration of Pu(VI) species in the environment.
