Separation of lanthanides and actinides on a bistriazinyl pyridine coated reverse phase column

Fast and selective reversed-phase high performance liquid chromatographic separation of UO2 2+ and Th4+ ions using surface modified C18 silica monolithic supports with target specific ionophoric ligands

Reprocessing nuclear-spent fuels is highly demanded for enhanced resource efficacy and removal of the associated radiotoxicity. The present work elucidates the rapid separation of UO₂ ²⁺ and Th⁴⁺ ions using a reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatographic (RP-HPLC) technique by dynamically modifying the surface of a C₁₈ silica monolith column with target-specific ionophoric ligands. For the dynamic modification, four analogous aromatic amide ligands, N ¹,N ¹,N ³,N ³,N ⁵,N ⁵-hexa(alkyl)benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxamide (alkyl = butyl, hexyl, octyl, and decyl) as column modifiers were synthesized. The complexation properties and retention profiles of the amide-based column modifiers for the selective and sequential separation of UO₂ ²⁺ and Th⁴⁺ ions were investigated. In addition, the selective separation of UO₂ ²⁺ and Th⁴⁺ ions among the competitive ions of similar chemical properties were also studied. The ionophore immobilized C₁₈ silica monolith columns demonstrated a varying degree of retention behavior for UO₂ ²⁺ and Th⁴⁺ ions (UO₂ ²⁺ is retained longer than Th⁴⁺ under all analytical conditions), eventually leading to rapid separations within a period of ≤5 min. A 0.1 M solution of 2-hydroxyisobutyric acid (HIBA, 1 mL min^-1) served as the mobile phase, and the qualitative and quantitative assessment of the sequentially separated 5f metal ions was achieved through post-column derivatization reaction, using arsenazo(iii) as a post-column reagent (PCR; 1.5 mL min^-1) prior to analysis using a UV-vis detector, at 665 nm (λ _max). The developed technique was further evaluated by standardizing various analytical parameters, including modifier concentration, mobile phase pH, mobile phase flow rate, etc., to yield the best chromatographic separation. Also, the conceptual role of alkyl chain length (in the modifier) on the retention behavior of the studied metal ions was evaluated for cutting-edge future applications.

Binding affinity of pyridines with AmIII/CmIII elucidated by density functional theory calculations

In recent decades, N-heterocyclic ligands have been extensively used in the separation of lanthanides/actinides, whereas the selective extraction of amercium or curium has been very challenging. Using density functional theory calculations, this study is devoted to the investigation of the binding affinity of a series of modelling pyridine ligands with Am^III and Cm^III. The structure-property correlations between the amercium and curium systems and the binding affinity were obtained, and promising strategies for efficient separation of Am^III/Cm^III were proposed.

A rapid impregnation method for loading desired amounts of extractant on prepacked reversed-phase columns for high performance liquid chromatographic separation of metal ions

A time-efficient impregnation method for loading extractant onto reversed-phase columns was developed, using di-(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid (HDEHP) as a model extractant. The optimal loading conditions for the impregnation process of a standard analytical scale column was achieved by dissolving an appropriate amount of HDEHP (per void volume) in n-pentane, flushing the column with two void volumes (5mL) of impregnation solution and heating the column for a short time to remove the solvent. The process takes about one hour, a significant time reduction compared to commonly used impregnation methods (17-23h). The chromatographic traits for separation of the lighter lanthanides (La-Gd) using columns impregnated under different conditions were evaluated; heating for short period of time gave improved column performance most likely due to the presence of n-pentane in the pores of the support material. A linear relation was found (R²=0.9934) for the amount of HDEHP loaded as a function of HDEHP concentration in the impregnation solution. The coated amounts of HDEHP were in the range of 0.29-2.25mmol per column by flushing with 5mL of impregnation solution containing 0.3-5.0mmol of HDEHP per void volume. This 'flush-evaporate' impregnation method allowed for loading a pre-determined amount of extractant and produces very small amounts of organic waste. An overview of the various impregnation approaches previously used for extractant coating on prepacked columns and bulk support materials is also presented.

Electrospray ionization mass spectrometric studies on uranyl complex with α-hydroxyisobutyric acid in water-methanol medium

RATIONALE

Hydroxycarboxylic acids are extensively used as chelating agents in the liquid chromatographic separation of actinides and lanthanides. They are also used as model compounds to understand the binding characteristics of humic substances. A systematic study of the speciation of uranyl-α-hyydroxyisobutyric acid (HIBA) in water-methanol is essential, as it is important to understand the various mechanisms responsible for the separation of these species in liquid chromatography.

METHODS

ESI-MS studies were carried out using a tandem quadrupole-time-of-flight mass spectrometer in positive and negative ion mode. The effects of solution composition, solute concentration and supporting electrolyte concentration on the ESI-MS behavior of the uranyl species were studied. Transmission parameters such as the quadrupole ion energy and collision cell energy were optimized for acquiring the spectra of uranyl-HIBA species, ensuring that the spectra reflect the solution equilibrium conditions.

RESULTS

The solution composition and concentration of the uranyl salt were found to influence the major uncomplexed uranyl species. Although the ESI parameters did not influence the species distribution of uranyl-HIBA, the transmission parameters did have a significant effect. The overall trend in the complexation reaction between uranyl and HIBA was studied as a function of ligand-to-metal ratio. The species distribution obtained in positive ion mode was similar to that obtained in negative ion mode.

CONCLUSIONS

The study presents the optimization of the mobile phase conditions and the ESI-MS parameters for the speciation of the uranyl-HIBA system. The methodology was applied to obtaining the distribution of complexed and uncomplexed uranyl species for monitoring the trend in the complexation reaction.
