Abstract
BACKGROUND Liposuction is one of the most common procedures used for body contouring. In this study, we aimed to determine whether there is a weight change with VASER-assisted liposuction (VAL) procedure and the demographic factors affecting it. METHODS A total of 51 patients (30 females and 21 males) who underwent VAL between the years of 2020 and 2022 were included in the study. Participants' weights before VAL, body mass indexes (BMI), aspiration volumes, demographic data, and weights and BMIs one month after VAL were recorded and analyzed. In addition, the fat ratio in the aspirate was determined in ten patients. RESULTS The mean aspiration volume with VAL was 4832.50 ± 2373.26 ml in females and 5176.90 ± 1602.61 ml in males. Body weights (baseline, 90.34 ± 9.17 vs. 71.01 ± 8.87; one month later, 86.95 ± 8.34 vs. 66.28 ± 10.04: p < 0.001) and BMIs (baseline, 28.59 ± 2.97 vs. 26.40 ± 3.69; one month later, 27.54 ± 2.92 vs. 24.59 ± 3.76: p = 0.009) were higher in males than females, both at baseline and after VAL. There was a significant decrease in body weights and BMIs after VAL in both females (4.73 ± 4.73 kg) and males (3.39 ± 4.27 kg) (p < 0.001). However, no correlation was observed between the decrease in body weights and BMIs after VAL and gender, age, aspirate volume, and fat volume. CONCLUSION Although there was a decrease in mean body weight and mean BMI in both males and females one month after VAL, no associations were observed between weight drop after VAL and gender, age, aspiration volume, and fat volume. Abstract
BACKGROUND Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) represents a prevalent mental health condition characterized by distress arising from self-perceived physical imperfections. BDD serves as a contraindication to aesthetic surgery. Recognizing BDD holds paramount importance for plastic surgeons, as it is instrumental in averting the exacerbation of this condition while ensuring appropriate referrals. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of BDD in cosmetic surgery patients and to pinpoint key characteristics associated with BDD. This information provides plastic surgeons with specific factors to consider during preoperative evaluations. METHODS We employed TriNetX database to identify patients with BDD who underwent cosmetic surgery identified by Current Procedural Terminology codes. Demographics and patient characteristics were identified using the International Classification of Diseases 10 codes. We calculated odds ratios (OR) by using chi-squared tests to assess risk factors among patients with BDD. RESULTS Of 226,374 patients who underwent plastic surgery between August 2002 and August 2022, fewer than 0.1% were diagnosed with BDD. Of the BDD patients, 52.1% were diagnosed after cosmetic surgery. Compared with the control group, BDD patients were more likely to undergo rhinoplasty (OR=1.784, p = 0.004) and nonlocalized lipectomy (OR=1.448, p = 0.021) and less likely to undergo blepharoplasty (OR=0.451, p = 0.002). Findings indicated a strong association between BDD patients undergoing cosmetic procedures and comorbid psychiatric conditions such as depression (OR=4.279, p < 0.05), anxiety (OR=5.490, p < 0.05), and Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (OR=3.993, p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS These findings underscore the ongoing significance of BDD in the context of cosmetic surgery, potentially indicating a lower surgery rate among BDD patients compared with previous estimates. Nevertheless, avenues for further improvement persist. Our data affirm the noteworthy occurrence of postsurgery BDD development, thereby highlighting the ongoing necessity for psychiatric evaluation in surgical patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Currently, the definition of large-volume liposuction is the removal of 5 L or more of total aspirate. Higher volumes of lipoaspirate come into consideration with higher BMIs, because more than 5 L is often required to achieve a satisfactory aesthetic result. The boundaries of what lipoaspirate volume is considered safe are based on historical opinion and are constantly in question. OBJECTIVES Because to date there have been no scientific data available to support a specific safe maximum volume of lipoaspirate, the authors discuss necessary conditions for safe high-volume lipoaspirate extraction. METHODS This retrospective study included 310 patients who had liposuction of ≥5 L over a 30-month period. All patients had 360° liposuction alone or in combination with other procedures. RESULTS Patient ages ranged from 20 to 66 with a mean age of 38.5 (SD = 9.3). Average operative time was 202 minutes (SD = 83.1). Mean total aspirate was 7.5 L (SD = 1.9). An average of 1.84 L (SD = 0.69) of intravenous fluids and 8.99 L (SD = 1.47) of tumescent fluid were administered. Urine output was maintained above 0.5 mL/kg/hr. There were no major cardiopulmonary complications or cases requiring blood transfusion. CONCLUSIONS High-volume liposuction is safe if proper preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative protocols and techniques are employed. The authors believe that this bias should be modified and that sharing their experience with high-volume liposuction may help guide other surgeons to incorporate this practice with confidence and safety for better patient outcomes. Abstract
PURPOSE This study was set up to investigate the reliability, factorial, concurrent, and criterion validity of the Italian version of the 34-item Body Shape Questionnaire (BSQ) and its shorter versions. METHODS The study included 231 patients diagnosed with an eating disorder and 58 putatively healthy people (comparison sample). The Italian BSQ-34 was administered to participants together with the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale and the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale. Information on body mass index, caloric intake at baseline, and the number of episodes of self-vomiting per week was also acquired. RESULTS Cronbach's alpha of BSQ-34 was 0.971 (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.965-0.976) in patients and 0.960 (0.944-0.974) in controls. Test-retest stability in patients (n = 69), measured with intraclass correlation coefficient, was 0.987 (0.983-0.991). Confirmatory factor analysis of the single-factor model yielded acceptable fit for all versions of the BSQ. On all BSQ versions, patients scored higher than controls with a large effect size when calculated as Cliff's delta. BMI and mean caloric intake at baseline had a stronger association with BSQ-34 than levels of anxiety and depression. The analysis with the receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curve showed that the BSQ-34 distinguished patients with an eating disorder from controls with good accuracy (Area Under the Curve = 86.5; 95% CI 82.2-90.7). CONCLUSION The Italian version of the BSQ possesses good psychometric properties, in both the long and the shortened versions, and it can be applied to measure body dissatisfaction for both clinical and research purposes. Abstract
BACKGROUND In the past decade, there has been an increase in the number of cosmetic procedures performed globally. About one-third of individuals who undergo cosmetic procedures are under the age of 35. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has become a regional hub for cosmetic procedures. This cross-sectional study examines the perception of cosmetic procedures among youth in the UAE. METHODS A 63-question survey was electronically disseminated to university students to identify factors associated with the use of cosmetic procedures in this population. RESULTS Ninety-one percent of the 178 participants were female, and 58 percent of them were aged 19 to 21. The majority of the participants felt cosmetic procedures are gaining acceptance in UAE society. Nearly 70 percent of participants felt that a legal and regulatory framework was important to determine the permissible age for undergoing cosmetic surgeries. LIMITATIONS One limitation of the study lies in a modest response rate of 35.6 percent. There was a small number of male responders, and the assessment of differences between sex was not easy to conduct. CONCLUSION Cosmetic procedures are increasingly being accepted among youth in the Middle East, with skin and nasal procedures being the most popular. The youth's concept of ideal body shape is in alignment with the Western ideas of beauty. Future research could characterize these perceptions in other cultures and explore differences in what is perceived to be beautiful in various parts of the world.

Abstract
Background Breast cancer (BC) incidence in Australian women aged 45 to 64 years (‘middle-aged’) has tripled in the past 50 years, along with increasing alcohol consumption and obesity in middle-age women. Alcohol and obesity have been individually associated with BC but little is known about how these factors might interact. Chronic psychological stress has been associated with, but not causally linked to, BC. Here, alcohol could represent the ‘missing link’ – reflecting self-medication. Using an exploratory cross-sectional design, we investigated inter-correlations of alcohol intake and overweight/obesity and their association with BC incidence in middle-aged women. We also explored the role of stress and various lifestyle factors in these relationships. Methods We analysed population data on BC incidence, alcohol consumption, overweight/obesity, and psychological stress. A case control study was conducted using an online survey. Cases (n = 80) were diagnosed with BC and controls (n = 235) were women in the same age range with no BC history. Participants reported lifestyle data (including alcohol consumption, weight history) over consecutive 10-year life periods. Data were analysed using a range of bivariate and multivariate techniques including correlation matrices, multivariate binomial regressions and multilevel logistic regression. Results Ecological inter-correlations were found between BC and alcohol consumption and between BC and obesity but not between other variables in the matrix. Strong pairwise correlations were found between stress and alcohol and between stress and obesity. BMI tended to be higher in cases relative to controls across reported life history. Alcohol consumption was not associated with case-control status. Few correlations were found between lifestyle factors and stress, although smoking and alcohol consumption were correlated in some periods. Obesity occurring during the ages of 31 to 40 years emerged as an independent predictor of BC (OR 3.5 95% CI: 1.3–9.4). Conclusions This study provides ecological evidence correlating obesity and alcohol consumption with BC incidence. Case-control findings suggest lifetime BMI may be important with particular risk associated with obesity prior to 40 years of age. Stress was ecologically linked to alcohol and obesity but not to BC incidence and was differentially correlated with alcohol and smoking among cases and controls. Our findings support prevention efforts targeting weight in women below 40 years of age and, potentially, lifelong alcohol consumption to reduce BC risk in middle-aged women.
