Abstract
BACKGROUND Emergency medicine (EM) is a rapidly developing specialty worldwide. The scientific publications trend is one of the parameters to evaluate national EM developmental milestones. This study was performed to analyze the publication trends from emergency departments (EDs) of International Federation for Emergency Medicine (IFEM) full member countries from 2009 to 2018. METHODS All data were retrieved from the SciVerse Scopus database. IFEM full member countries where EM was recognized as a specialty before 2009 and annual publication numbers exceeded 12 in 2018 were included. The EM journals list was adopted from the 2017 Journal Citation Reports. Publications with the first author affiliated with EDs were divided into EM or non-EM journal groups according to the publishing journal. The slope (β) of the linear regression was used to assess the trends of publication numbers. The correlation between the 2009 publication number and the trend of publication between 2009 and 2018 was measured by Pearson's correlation coefficient (r). The correlation between funding numbers and publication numbers was analyzed by Spearman's rank correlation coefficient (rs). RESULTS We identified 30,130 publications with first authors from EDs in 19 countries. The numbers of publications in both EM and non-EM journals showed an increasing trend in 12 countries. Fifteen of the 19 countries had a greater increasing trend in non-EM journals than in EM journals. The 2009 publication numbers were positively correlated with the publication increasing trend between 2009 and 2018 in both EM and non-EM journals (r = 0.854 and 0.947, respectively, both p < 0.001). The funded publication number was positively correlated with the total national publication amount (rs = 0.748, p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS The research capacity of EDs has been increasingly recognized by other medical specialties. The national publication numbers from EDs may predict the academic publication increasing trends in the subsequent 10 years.

Abstract
The uncertainties around disease management and control measures have not only motivated clinicians to keep abreast of new evidence available in the scholarly literature, but also to be rigorously engaged in medical research, dissemination and knowledge transfer. We aimed to explore clinicians’ publication output from the Malaysian perspective. A self-report survey and bibliometric analysis was conducted. A total of 201/234 clinicians participated in the survey. Items consisted of demographics, researching habits, publication output and level of importance of journal selection metrics. Descriptive, bivariate and multivariate analyses were conducted. Bibliometric analysis using retrieved records from PubMed between 2009 and October 2019 was conducted and co-occurrence and co-authorship analyses were executed. Self-reported publication output was 16.9%. In the logistic regression model, publication output was significantly higher amongst consultants or clinical specialists (aOR = 2.5, 95% CI 1.1–10.0, p = 0.023); clinicians previously involved in research (aOR = 4.2, 95% CI 1.5–11.4, p = 0.004); clinicians who ever used reference citation managers (aOR = 3.2, 95% CI 1.3–7.7, p = 0.010); and journal publication speed (aOR = 2.9, 95% CI 1.2–7.1, p = 0.019). Most clinicians published original research papers (76.4%) in international journals (78.2%). Published papers were mostly observational studies, genetic, stroke and health services or systems research. In conclusion, socio-demographics, researching habits and journal selection metrics were significantly associated with self-reported publication output. Real outputs from bibliometrics were predominantly focused across five clusters.

Abstract
PURPOSE To investigate the quantity and quality of articles in the field of full-endoscopic spine surgery (FESS) from different countries and assess characteristics of worldwide research productivity. METHODS Articles published from 1997 to July 23, 2018, were screened using the Web of Science database. All studies were assessed for the following parameters: the number of total publications, h-index, contribution of countries, authors, journals, and institutions. RESULTS A total of 408 articles were identified between 1997 and 2018. Between 1997 and 2017, the number of published articles tended to increase by 41 times. The largest number of articles was from China (30.15%), followed by South Korea (28.68%), the USA (13.97%), Germany (9.31%), and Japan (4.90%). The highest h-index was found for articles from South Korea (23), followed by the USA (18), Germany (16), China (11), and Japan (7). The highest number of articles was published in World Neurosurgery (12.50%), followed by Pain Physician (10.29%), Spine (6.62%), European Spine Journal (4.66%), and Journal of Neurosurgery: Spine (4.17%). Wooridul Spine Hospital published the largest number of articles (10.29%), followed by Tongji University (5.88%), University of Witten/Herdecke (5.39%), Brown University (5.15%), and Third Military Medical University (3.43%). CONCLUSIONS The number of articles published in the field of FESS has increased rapidly in the past 20 years. In terms of quantity, China is the most contributive country based on the number of publications. High-quality papers as measured by h-index and the large quantity is from South Korea (second only to China). These slides can be retrieved under Electronic Supplementary Material.

Abstract
Purpose Bibliometrics is increasingly used to assess the quantity and quality of scientific research output in many research fields worldwide. However, to the best of our knowledge, no studies have documented the main characteristics of arthroplasty publications from different countries. This study aimed to evaluate the worldwide research productivity and status of Turkey in the field of arthroplasty using bibliometric methods and to provide an insight into the arthroplasty research for surgeons and researchers. Methods The Web of Science database was searched to identify arthroplasty articles published between 2006 and 2016. The contributions of countries were evaluated based on publication count, citation average, h-index and publication rate in the top 10 ranked journals. Each countries publication output was adjusted according to population size. Results A total of 26.167 articles were identified. World arthroplasty publications were increased significantly over time (p < .005). The United States was the most productive country with 9007 articles (34,4% of total) followed by England with 2939 articles (11,4 of total) and Germany with 1881 articles (7,1% of total). According to average citations per item, Scotland was in the first place followed by Denmark and Sweden, whereas in the first place according to publication output adjusted by population size was Switzerland followed by Denmark and Scotland. The United States was also in the first place according to h-index and publication rate in the top 10 ranked journals. Founding average was 28,8% (7539 of 26164) for the arthroplasty articles that were analyzed in the study. Conclusion There is a rapid increase in the number of articles in arthroplasty research from 2006 to 2016. The United States was the most productive country as measured by total publications in the arthroplasty field. However, some small European countries with high in-come have higher quality of articles and better productivity when adjusted for population. Gross domestic product (GDP) per capita and research foundation had positive affect on arthroplasty publications, both qualitatively and quantitatively.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The research productivity of countries commonly grouped within sub-Saharan Africa is as diverse as their cultural, economic, linguistic, political, and social profiles. While South Africa has been the science hub on the subcontinent for decades, publishing original research articles in the thousands, Mauritania struggles to have a single publication in international indexed journals in any given year. Detailed country-specific accounts on the co-evolution of research productivity and demographic and economic indicators from sub-Saharan Africa are lacking and render an accurate evaluation and cross-country comparison of internal research progress challenging. METHODS We assessed the research productivity of Côte d'Ivoire, a francophone West African country that has gone through considerable socio-political unrest, for the period 2000-2016, and determined the main publishing institutions. We considered original research articles extracted from PubMed and Web of Science Core Collection, emphasizing life sciences and biomedical sciences. RESULTS We found the quantity of publications doubling from 4.1 to 8.5 per million population and the 'total product' - a measure for quantity and quality of published articles - rising from 0.8 to 22.1 per million population between 2000 and 2016. Since 2010 there was a marked increase in the proportion of English publications and a concomitant drop in the proportion of articles with Ivorian first and last authors. The percentage of foreign author contribution increased from 38.7% in 2000 to 71.6% in 2016, suggesting an 'internationalization' of the country's research production and output. Mixed authorship compared with 'Ivorian only' showed higher representation in journals with an official impact factor by Web of Science with proportions of 73% versus 28% for 2008 and 91% versus 45% for 2016. Two universities and university hospitals and three autonomous research institutions were consistently among the top 10 institutions publishing peer-reviewed material in three selected years (2000, 2008, and 2016). The main features of the most successful publishing institutions were research staff size, diversification of research portfolio and funding, multiple research bases across the country, and established and productive partnerships with foreign institutions. CONCLUSION Since the turn of the millennium, research productivity in Côte d'Ivoire has steadily grown at an above regional and global rate despite recurring economic pressures and sociopolitical unrest. We have observed benefits of internationalization throughout this current analysis reaching from improved publishing standards to increasing resilience of research institutions in times of crisis.

Abstract
Endoscopic endonasal surgery for pituitary adenomas is being performed more frequently worldwide in the recent years. This first bibliometric analysis was conducted aiming to have a microscopic view of research activities about endoscopic endonasal surgery for pituitary adenomas. The original articles about endoscopic endonasal surgery for pituitary adenomas were extracted from the Web of Science (WoS) and analyzed concerning their distributions. We also explored the potential correlations between publications of different countries and their gross domestic product (GDP) via Pearson correlation test. The total number of original articles retrieved from WoS was 307 from 1997 to 2017. The number of original articles published in the last decade has increased by 530.95% compared with that published in the former decade. The United States has published 124 articles (40.391%), followed by Italy with 40 (13.029%) and Japan with 27 articles (8.795%). The journal that published the highest number of original articles was Journal of Neurosurgery with 31 (10.098%), followed by Neurosurgery (n = 23, 7.492%), World Neurosurgery (n = 23, 7.492%), and Neurosurgical Focus (n = 15, 4.886%). There was a strong correlation between publication numbers and GDP of different countries (r = 0.889, P < 0.001). There is a skyrocket trend of endoscopic endonasal surgery for pituitary adenomas during the last 2 decades, and countries with high GDP tend to make more contributions to this field.

Abstract
Tissue engineering (TE) is defined as a multidisciplinary scientific discipline with the main objective to develop artificial bioengineered living tissues to regenerate damaged or lost tissues. Since its appearance in 1988, TE has globally spread to improve current therapeutic approaches, entailing a revolution in clinical practice. The aim of this study is to analyze global research trends on TE publications to realize the scenario of TE research from 1991 to 2016 by using document retrieval from Web of Science database and bibliometric analysis. Document type, language, source title, authorship, countries and filiation centers, and citation count were evaluated in 31,859 documents. Obtained results suggest a great multidisciplinary role of TE due to a wide spectrum-up to 51-of scientific research areas identified in the corpus of literature, being predominant technological disciplines as Material Sciences or Engineering, followed by biological and biomedical areas, as Cell Biology, Biotechnology, or Biochemistry. Distribution of authorship, journals, and countries revealed a clear imbalance, in which a minority is responsible for a majority of documents. Such imbalance is notorious in authorship, where a 0.3% of authors are involved in half of the whole production.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION This study aims to analyze the references that the authors and editors used during the writing of Rosen's Emergency Medicine, 8th edition. METHODS 15,209 references, which were used in 197 chapters of Rosen's Emergency Medicine, 8th edition, were examined regarding the distribution of countries, journals, publication year, and the department of the affiliation of the first author. RESULTS A total of 63.1% (n = 9591) of the references were led by authors from the United States (US). US-based journals were mostly used, and Annals of Emergency Medicine was the journal from which the references were most frequently extracted, with a percentage of 5.2% (n = 756). The studies conducted by emergency physicians have increased in recent years, and emergency physicians, with a percentage of 17.8% (n = 351), were the leading authors of studies conducted between 2010 and 2013, which were cited in the references of Rosen's Emergency Medicine, 8th edition. CONCLUSION US-based studies make up a significantly bigger portion of the references used in Rosen's Emergency Medicine, 8th edition. If Europe and other countries give due importance to emergency medicine, they will have the capability to produce studies that can be used as references in textbooks as much as the US.
