Abstract
ABSTRACT Although sleep disorders have been studied many times in neuropathic pain (NP), the effect of pain level, depression, and quality of life (QOL) on sleep quality in NP has been rarely investigated. In the present study, we aimed to investigate associations between possible quality of sleep (QOS) impairment and pain level, depression, and QOL. Average daily pain intensity, QOL, QOS, and depression status of the patients were evaluated using a 100-mm visual analog scale (VAS), the RAND 36-Item Health Survey 1.0, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, and Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), respectively. In 83.1% of patients QOS was found to be poor. We found that there was a significant difference between good and poor QOS in BDI, VAS, and RAND 36-Item Health Survey 1.0 scale's parameters, and patients with NP have poor sleep quality. Depression status is the main predictor for QOS, so pain level and QOL affect the QOS in NP. Physicians who aim healthy QOS must evaluate all characteristics of pain, depression status, and QOL in patients with NP.

Abstract
This study aims to compare the sleep characteristics (structure and quality) in patients with type-2 diabetes mellitus with and without diabetic neuropathic pain (DNP), and to investigate the relationship of sensory phenotypes, anxiety, and depression with sleep quality in DNP patients. A cross-sectional study was performed in patients with type-2 diabetes mellitus and neuropathy. Patients were classified into two groups-with or without neuropathic pain-according to the "Douleur Neuropathique-4 (DN4)" scale. Sleep characteristics and quality (Medical Outcomes Study-MOS-sleep), pain phenotype (Neuropathic Pain Symptom Inventory-NPSI), mood status (Hospital Anxiety and Depression scale-HADS), pain intensity (Visual Analogue Scale-VAS), and quality of life (SF-12v2) were measured. The sample included 130 patients (65 with DNP). The mean scores in all the dimensions of the MOS-sleep scale were higher (more disturbances) in the DNP patients. Higher scores in anxiety or depression, greater intensity of pain or a higher score in the paroxysmal pain phenotype were associated with lower sleep quality in DNP patients. A shorter duration of the diabetes and lower levels of glycated hemoglobin were also associated with lower sleep quality. The results show the relationship between DNP and sleep quality, and the importance of assessing sensory phenotypes and mental comorbidities in these patients. Taking these factors into consideration, to adopt a multimodal approach is necessary to achieve better clinical results.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to analyze the relationship between sleep pattern and healthcare expenditures in adults, as well as to identify whether physical activity, biochemical markers and obesity affect this relationship. The sample was composed of 168 adults aged ≥ 50 years attended by two Basic Healthcare Units in Presidente Prudente, SP, Brazil. Health expenditure, sleep pattern, anthropometry, adiposity index, physical activity, metabolic and cardiovascular variables were assessed. Statistical analyses were performed using Kruskal-Wallis, Mann-Whitney and Spearman tests. Sleep disorders were positively correlated to higher costs with medicines and negatively correlated to costs with laboratory tests, even after adjusts by confounders. In addition, healthcare costs were also correlated to physical activity score, blood pressure, obesity and metabolic variables. Severe sleep disorders and high percentage of body fat were associated with increased use of medications. Sleep pattern is correlated to primary care healthcare costs, obesity and physical activity level.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To compare sleep dimensions in patients suffering from chronic pain of different origins, and with a group of pain-free subjects. To analyze the relationship between depression and/or anxiety and sleep disorders in musculoskeletal, neuropathic, and fibromyalgia patients. METHODS This cross-sectional study included patients diagnosed with neuropathic pain (NP) (n = 104), musculoskeletal pain (MSK) (n = 99), or fibromyalgia (FM) (n = 51), and pain free subjects (n = 72). Information about sleep dimensions (MOS-sleep), duration and intensity of pain (Visual Analog Scale), and anxiety and depression (Hospital Anxiety and Depression scale) was collected. RESULTS Of the 254 patients with chronic pain (PCP) studied, the mean pain intensity was 6.6 (SD = 1.9), with an average duration of 9 years. The scores in all sleep dimensions of the MOS-sleep were higher in CPP (more disturbances) compared to pain free patients, and differences were observed among the three groups of PCP, with FM most severely affected. Anxiety (β = 1.3), depression (β = 1.1), intensity (β = 1.7), and duration of pain (β = 0.04) were associated with more sleep problems in MSK patients. In contrast, anxiety (β = 2.5) and duration of pain (β = 0.05) were negatively related to sleep in the NP patients, and only depression (β = 1.3) affected FM patients. CONCLUSIONS The sleep pattern differs among groups of PCP in the presence or absence of mood disorders. Understanding these disorders in each specific group of PCP is fundamental, and it can contribute to improve the clinical situation of the patients and better orientating therapeutic strategies.

Abstract
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES To explore and synthesise current research to assess the state of science about the relationship between sleep disturbance and glycaemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes. BACKGROUND Sleep disturbance is suggested a risk factor for type 2 diabetes. Diabetes alone is a leading cause of death, but when coupled with sleep disturbance poses additional health risks. However, little is known about the relationship between sleep disturbance and glycaemic control in people with overt diabetes. DESIGN An integrative review. METHODS Whittemore and Knafl's methodology guided this integrative review. Original studies published before October 2016 were identified through systematic searches of seven databases using terms: diabet*; sleep or insomnia; glycem* or glucose or A1C or HbA1c or sugar; and their combinations. The matrix and narrative synthesis were employed to organise and synthesise the findings, respectively. The Crowe Critical Appraisal Tool was used to evaluate the study quality. RESULTS A total of 26 studies were identified; 17 of which reported significant relationships between sleep measures and glycaemic control. In 13 studies, sleep duration was associated with glycaemic control in both linear (n = 2) and nonlinear (n = 3) relationships; however, eight studies reported no significant relationships. Sleep quality was significantly related to glycaemic control in 14 of 22 studies. Nine studies found no relationship between any measure of sleep and glycaemic control. CONCLUSIONS There is strong evidence supporting the relationship between sleep quality and glycaemic control but further examination of the relationship between sleep duration and glycaemic control is warranted. Sleep disturbance, particularly impaired sleep quality, could potentially influence glycaemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE Nurses who treat patients with diabetes should include assessment of sleep, education for healthy sleep, and referral for treatment of sleep disturbance in order to maximise the potential for achieving good glycaemic control.
