Abstract
BACKGROUND The shift of treatment of paediatric cancer patients to include more care at home puts a lot of pressure on health care professionals (HCPs) to prepare and train parents on safe and correct drug handling at home. Parents must take in and understand the information presented to them while coping with their own fear related to their child's cancer diagnosis. In Sweden, parents are expected to handle and manipulate oral anticancer drugs (OADs) in the home setting. There is however a lack of a standardized method to inform and educate parents on how to handle OADs in a correct way at home. AIM To describe parents' experiences of handling OADs at home after participating in an educational intervention. METHOD Educational intervention in the present study aimed to improve parents' knowledge in key concepts that is, handling OADs at home by using information presented in different forms. Fifteen parents to 12 children with cancer were recruited from a paediatric oncology ward in Sweden to participate in an interview. The interviews were transcribed verbatim and subjected to qualitative content analysis. RESULTS Parents' experiences are presented in categories: Relieved stress, Awareness of own exposure, Facilitated my everyday life, Parents need continued support individually. The educational intervention resulted in both positive and negative feelings, increased awareness of drug exposure and correct drug handling at home. Practical training and information presented in different ways facilitated the process of drug handling. To handle the drug correctly at home parents requested to be trained and informed in the beginning of their child's oral drug treatment. In addition, parents requested to be individually approached by HCP to get answers to questions and concerns. CONCLUSIONS This educational intervention study shows promising results for the method used by HCPs to inform and educate parents on complicated topics such as handling OADs at home.

Abstract
PURPOSE The study aims to investigate factors influencing parents' satisfaction with hospital care for children with craniosynostosis during hospitalization for surgery. DESIGN AND METHODS A mixed-methods study with a convergent, parallel design was used. Ninety-five parents responded to the Swedish Pyramid Questionnaire for Treatment, a 25-item questionnaire with six quality domains. In addition, 20 parents were interviewed about their experiences. Frequencies were calculated, and content analysis was used to analyze free-text comments and transcribed interviews. RESULTS Parents' assessment of the overall quality of care was high (mean 87%, range 10-100%). They were most satisfied in the domain staff attitudes and less satisfied with information routines and participation. Content analysis of the interviews gave two overarching themes: Factors that parents experienced as facilitating good quality of care and Factors that parents experienced as impeding good quality of care. CONCLUSIONS Parents were generally satisfied with the care provided, and interviews captured parents´ views on important factors. Staff attitudes affected parents' perception of quality of care. PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS Clear information and dialogue as well as making parents feel they are part of their child's team can result in higher satisfaction, and allowing families to stay together in the hospital can ease the hospitalization experience. Using a theoretical model can help in suggesting relevant caring actions based on parents' reported care experiences.

Abstract
Enhancing respectful, responsive, integrative, and nurturing care for hospitalized newborns and young children (aged 0-24 months) is globally recognized but under-researched in low- and middle-income countries. Responsive, family-centered interventions target providers and parents and emphasize partnership in caring roles. From February 2020 to August 2021, we engaged in a participatory co-creation process with parents, providers, and newborn and child health stakeholders in Kenya to develop a comprehensive provider behavior change intervention and implemented it across 5 hospitals in Nairobi and Bungoma counties in Kenya. The multifaceted intervention included a 7-module orientation, feedback meetings, job aids, and psychosocial support-leveraging in-person and remote modalities-for providers working in newborn and pediatric units. We used a mixed-methods evaluation drawing on a pre-post provider survey, pre-post qualitative interviews with providers and parents, and a follow-up parental survey. There were significant post-intervention improvements in provider knowledge on safeguarding sleep, positioning and handling, and protecting skin. However, there were also significant reductions in providers' knowledge in identifying a child's pain, parental stress, and environmental stress. Among parents who received coaching from providers, there were higher levels of interpersonal communication between parent and provider, parental empowerment, and improved ability to provide integrated, responsive care to their child. Despite the challenges of implementing a provider-focused intervention to improve care for hospitalized newborns and young children during the global COVID-19 pandemic, we have demonstrated that it is feasible to implement a hybrid virtual and in-person process to influence several outcomes, including provider knowledge and practice, improved provider partnerships with parents, and parents' capacity to engage in the care of their newborn or young child.

Abstract
Thanks to its non-invasive nature and high-resolution imaging capabilities, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a valuable diagnostic tool for pediatric patients. However, the fear and anxiety experienced by young children during MRI scans often result in suboptimal image quality and the need for sedation/anesthesia. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of a smartphone application called COSMO@home to prepare children for MRI scans to reduce the need for sedation or general anesthesia. The COSMO@home app was developed incorporating mini-games and an engaging storyline to prepare children for learning goals related to the MRI procedure. A multicenter study was conducted involving four hospitals in Belgium. Eligible children aged 4-10 years were prepared with the COSMO@home app at home. Baseline, pre-scan, and post-scan questionnaires measured anxiety evolution in two age groups (4-6 years and 7-10 years). Eighty-two children participated in the study, with 95% obtaining high-quality MRI images. The app was well-received by children and parents, with minimal technical difficulties reported. In the 4-6-year-old group (N = 33), there was a significant difference between baseline and pre-scan parent-reported anxiety scores, indicating an increase in anxiety levels prior to the scan. In the 7-10-year-old group (N = 49), no significant differences were observed between baseline and pre-scan parent-reported anxiety scores. Overall, the COSMO@home app proved to be useful in preparing children for MRI scans, with high satisfaction rates and successful image outcomes across different hospitals. The app, combined with minimal face-to-face guidance on the day of the scan, showed the potential to replace or assist traditional face-to-face training methods. This innovative approach has the potential to reduce the need for sedation or general anesthesia during pediatric MRI scans and its associated risks and improve patient experience.

Abstract
Background Equity underpins Aotearoa New Zealand's publicly funded healthcare system; however, ethnic inequality persists. This qualitative study explored the perceptions and experiences of ethnically diverse parents accessing health services for their children. Methods A qualitative description methodology informed interviews and focus groups that were conducted with caregivers of preschool aged children who identified as being of Māori, Pacific, Asian and/or European ethnicity (n = 145). Data were analysed following a reflexive thematic analytic approach. Findings Five themes were constructed. Hierarchies of knowledge and trust Caregivers relied on multiple sources of health information and particularly trusted providers or other caregivers who had children. Relational versustransactional health encounters Caregivers were often disappointed that health providers did not build trusting relationships to support positive experiences. Bad mother vibe Mothers often felt judged by providers when accessing care and felt pressure to conform. The 'slow burn' of waiting Caregivers were often frustrated by how slow and fragmented the health system was, which was particularly distressing if their child was unwell or required referral. Navigating complexity Caregivers had to be proactive and assertive to ensure their child received care amidst the numerous barriers they faced, including discrimination and bias. While many commonalities were shared by ethnicity, unique to Indigenous Māori caregivers were the ongoing colonial traumas that impacted their ability to trust the healthcare system. Interpretation A non-judgemental, competent, and culturally sensitive approach by healthcare professionals and services may help foster trusting relationships and positive health encounters. Strategies to improve trust, ease of access and navigation are needed to mitigate existing complexity, fragmentation, and counter-intuitive nature of the NZ healthcare system. Caregivers require more autonomy over decisions about their child's care and availability of services that reflect their cultural values. Policies are required to alleviate the indirect costs of accessing healthcare, prioritising of whānau/family-centred care, and addressing pervasive racism and bias within the system. Abstract
In Europe, Portugal has been identified as the country with the most rapid evolution of paediatric palliative care provision, which is a highly complex experience for families. The present descriptive-exploratory study seeks to contribute to the understanding of the psychological experience of life-limiting conditions in parent caregivers. A total of 14 families completed a sociodemographic and clinical data sheet and answered a structured online interview based on an incomplete narrative resulting from the Unwanted Guest Metaphor. A thematic analysis of the various narratives was performed through an inductive-deductive process. The results provide a holistic view of 10 essential dimensions in the parental psychological experience and contribute to the design of intervention methodologies in an eco-systemic approach. The importance of clear communication with health professionals, an awareness of the unpredictability of the disease, the desire for more self-care, the difficulty in understanding their children's needs and the threat implicit in everyday life are some of the main findings. This research emphasizes the importance of having opportunities of emotional expression and psychoeducation about anxiety' management, enhancing the perception of positive characteristics in children with palliative needs and creating time for the couple. The study has some limitations, such as the small sample size, and suggests that further research should explore the father's experience.

Abstract
Background Family-centered care has evolved into patient and family-centered care. Although this is not a new concept; however, its application to nursing practice is very challenging among nurses due to its ambiguity. Objective This study aimed to clarify the concept of patient and family-centered care for children. Methods Walker and Avant's concept analysis method was used. A literature search was also done using the following databases: Google Scholar, ProQuest, ScienceDirect, and Scopus, for articles published from 2011 to 2021. Results The defining attributes of patient and family-centered care are partnership, communication, respect, and compassion. Antecedents include patient and family involvement, readiness to collaborate and participate, competency and desire of the care professional team, supportive environment, and policies. Consequences of the patient and family-centered care include improved child outcomes and quality of life, promotion of patient safety, increased patient and family satisfaction, enhancement of humanistic values, reduction of hospitalization cost and length of stay, and decreased stress, anxiety, and depression in family members. Conclusion Four attributes of patient and family-centered care, its antecedents, and consequences may aid researchers in better understanding the concept and its application in nursing practice. This concept can also be used to establish quality care delivery strategies and promote professional relationships between nurses, patients, and families in clinical settings.

Abstract
Background Many children feel moderate to intense pain in the hospital following surgery. Untreated pain can have deleterious physical and psychological effects. Mothers' involvement in child pain care and management postoperatively has been shown to be important in improving the outcomes and experiences of children, mothers, and health professionals. Aims To explore mothers' involvement in postoperative pain care and management of their children during hospitalization and following discharge and identify approaches to improve management and participation activities. Methods We used a qualitative single case study design with thematic analysis. The analysis included 20 mother-child dyads and 21 nurses, involving observation of participants and semi-structured interviews of mothers and nurses. The analysis also incorporated a review of documents from the pediatric surgical department (hospital policies and forms). Findings The following main themes and sub-themes were generated from the data: (i) provision of pain information (expected type, frequency, and duration of pain after surgery, pain intensity score, pain relief medication, and pain management methods), (ii) communication deficiency (language barrier and breakdown in communication between health professionals), (iii) emotional and physical support (family support, environmental comfort, and sleep and meal requirements), (iv) social and cultural influences (patriarchal society, cultural and religious beliefs, and work status), and (v) hospital facilities, provisions, and services (entertainment, follow-up programs, education courses on pain management for nurses, and materials and services). Conclusions The study examined mothers' participation in postoperative pain care and management in a cohort of children admitted to a tertiary care setting in Saudi Arabia, highlighting key factors that influence involvement and suggesting approaches for improving participation.

Abstract
Background:
Parent and nurse perceptions about the care of hospitalized children have been examined in developed countries, but little is known in developing countries.
Objective:
The study aims to evaluate the perceptions of nurses and parents towards parental participation in care for hospitalized children and associated factors.
Methods:
A cross-sectional design was used to collect data from nurses and parents in paediatric units in the Eastern Region of Saudi Arabia using a convenience sampling technique. Data were collected using the Parent Participation Attitude Scale (PPAS), and the agreement and differences between groups were analysed.
Results:
The present results found that both parents and nurses agreed on 7 out of 20 statements regarding parental involvement in care for their children. Nurses in paediatric surgery had a higher perception of involving parents (P = 0.002), while nurses in Well Baby Nursery (WBN) ward had the lowest perception. The present findings confirm that married caregivers had higher perceptions (P = 0.035) than their single counterparts.
Conclusion:
Parent participation attitude was agreed on for seven statements between parents and nurses. More studies are required to explore the relationship between healthcare providers and parents with regard to parental participation in caring for hospitalized children.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Neonatal palliative care (NPC) is an emerging subset of care in United States (US) neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) that provides relief for both infants and families at the end of life for infants with terminal diagnoses. Families play a integral role in the decision-making process for their infant, but their experiences with and perceptions of the support and care provided to them via NPC is unclear to health professionals. This literature review summarizes the state of knowledge on parents' perspectives of NPC while focusing on the specific factors that influence their experiences and satisfaction with NPC. METHODS A systematic literature review was conducted following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. Articles published in peer-reviewed journals between January 2010 and January 2021 that investigated parents' perceptions of neonatal palliative care either as their central topic or as a sub-topic as part of a larger focus. RESULTS A total of 16 articles (N = 16) were included in this review. Three overarching themes encompass the findings of the literature review: parent-clinician interactions, parent-infant interactions, and parent-self interactions. Within these themes, topics such as consistent and clear communication, involvement in care decisions, and social and psychological support were explored. CONCLUSION Clinicians must focus on these important quality indicators to ensure they provide the best care possible to the patients and families that they serve. Further research must be done to investigate parent satisfaction and needs in relation to NPC more deeply and to develop more supportive interventions and protocols.

Abstract
A child's illness and admission in a hospital are stressful and can negatively affect the child and his/her caregivers. The stress is further exacerbated when a child is critically ill and has been admitted to an intensive care unit (ICU). The effects can be reduced when caregivers of the sick children are present and involved in decision making and actual care of their hospitalized children, a care model called family-centered care. Malawi has adopted family-centered care model in the newly instituted Mercy James Pediatric ICU. Little is known about experiences of caregivers with FCC in Malawi. This qualitative study was therefore conducted to explore experiences of caregivers on their involvement in decision making and care at Mercy James Pediatric ICU in Blantyre, Malawi. This was a descriptive qualitative study with a sample size of fifteen participants, however, data saturation was reached with ten participants. One on one in-depth interviews were conducted among a purposively selected sample of ten caregivers whose children had been discharged from the PICU. Content analysis was deductively and manually undertaken to analyze data with the aid of delve software to organize the data. Findings show that not every caregiver was involved in the decision making of their children's care, and if they did, it was not adequate. Barriers to effective involvement such as using a foreign language had a negative impact on comprehensive involvement of caregivers in decision making for their children's care. All participants were, however, involved in the physical care of their children. It is important that health care workers should continuously encourage caregivers to get involved in the decision making and care of their children.

Abstract
PURPOSE To explore school-aged children's experiences about their best interests and participation in care during a hospital admission. DESIGN AND METHODS A descriptive qualitative design involving in-depth, iterative inductive review of child responses to generate key words that led to identification of categories and themes. The study was guided by the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child's definition of the best interests of the child, Bronfenbrenner's bioecological model and a child centred care approach. RESULTS Nine school-aged children (5-15 years old) from one children's ward in Australia participated. Analysis yielded thirteen categories, six sub-themes, and three themes: 1) Relationships with parents were positive when they met their children's physical and emotional needs and advocated for them; 2) Relationships with staff were positive when staff created opportunities for children to have a say in their healthcare, and checked in on the children and 3) Seeking familiarity away from home was facilitated when the environment children found themselves in provided them their own space and various forms of entertainment. CONCLUSION School-aged children were able to verbalize what their best interests were and how participation in care could be facilitated in the hospital setting. The inter-relationships of the children with their parents, healthcare professionals, and the immediate environment reflected interactions both within, and between systems. RESEARCH AND PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS Children in hospital need to be provided with age-appropriate opportunities to participate in shared decision making to support their best interests. Studies that model and evaluate such opportunities are needed.

Abstract
ABSTRACT Objectives: to describe scientific evidence on the involvement of companions in patient safety, from their own perspective and health professionals’ perspective in neonatal and pediatric units. Methods: scoping review carried out according to The Joanna Briggs Institute’s recommendations, in eight databases, following the Preferred Reporting Items checklist for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews checklist, between 2011 and 2021. Results: the 13 studies included highlighted the importance of companions’ involvement in patient safety and the prevention of adverse events. However, they pointed out failures in communication and weakness in the training of professionals, which were obstacles to their involvement. The strengthening of health education, multidisciplinary rounds and educational technologies were highlighted as strategies to expand the involvement of companions. Final Considerations: this study directs elements for health professionals and managers to rethink the companions’ role in patient safety and development of collective strategies.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Pediatric mortality remains unacceptably high in many low-resource settings, with inpatient deaths often associated with delayed recognition of clinical deterioration. The Family-Assisted Severe Febrile Illness ThERapy (FASTER) tool has been developed for caregivers to assist in monitoring their hospitalized children and alert clinicians. This study evaluates feasibility of implementation by caregivers and clinicians. METHODS Randomized controlled feasibility study at Kenyatta National Hospital, Kenya. Children hospitalized with acute febrile illness with caregivers at the bedside for 24 h were enrolled. Caregivers were trained using the FASTER tool. The primary outcome was the frequency of clinician reassessments between intervention (FASTER) and standard care arms. Poisson regression with random intercept for grouping by patient was used, adjusting for admission pediatric early warning score, age, gender. Secondary outcomes included survey assessments of clinician and caregiver experiences with FASTER. RESULTS One hundred and fifty patient/caregiver pairs were enrolled, 139 included in the analysis, 74 in the intervention, 65 in the control arm. Patients' median age was 0.9 (range 0.2-10) and 1.1 years (range 0.2-12) in intervention vs. control arms. The most common diagnoses were pneumonia (80[58%]), meningitis (58[38%]) and malaria (34 [24%]). 134 (96%) caregivers were patients' mothers. Clinician visits/hour increased with patients' illness severity in both arms, but without difference in frequency between arms (point estimate for difference -0.9%, p = 0.97). Of the 16 deaths, 8 (four/arm) occurred within 2 days of enrollment. Forty clinicians were surveyed, 33 (82%) reporting that FASTER could improve outcomes of very sick children in low-resource settings; 26 (65%) rating caregivers as able to adequately capture patients' severity of illness. Of 70 caregivers surveyed, 63 (90%) reported that FASTER training was easy to understand; all (100%) agreed that the intervention would improve care of hospitalized children and help identify sick children in their community. DISCUSSION We observed no difference in recorded frequency of clinician visits with FASTER monitoring. However, the tool was rated positively by caregivers and clinicians., Implementation appears feasible but requires optimization. These feasibility data may inform a larger trial powered to measure morbidity and mortality outcomes to determine the utility of FASTER in detecting and responding to clinical deterioration in low-resource settings. Abstract
OBJECTIVE To examine among surgical nurses whether work-role conflict, work-role ambiguity, respect, distress and trust in collaboration due to interactions with family caregivers in the nursing ward are associated with the quality of contact with patients and their families. METHODS A multicentre cross-sectional study was conducted between January and March 2020. Surgical nurses completed a questionnaire recording work-role conflict, work-role ambiguity, sense of respect, distress, trust in collaboration and quality of contact with patients and their families. Data were analysed using correlation analysis, multiple linear regression analysis and mediation regression analysis. RESULTS A total of 135 nurses completed the questionnaire. The correlation analysis showed significant correlations between nurses' impaired quality of contact with patients and their families and nurses' work-role conflicts, work-role ambiguity, trust in collaboration and distress (p < 0.05). The multiple regression analyses corroborated that work-role conflict and distress were significantly and positively associated with impaired quality of contact. Furthermore, mediation regression analysis showed that work-role conflict was associated indirectly and significantly with quality of contact through distress. CONCLUSION Work-role conflict due to having family caregivers involved in the care of hospitalised patients is significantly associated with nurses' distress and quality of contact with patients and their families.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Significant numbers of children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) display problems that cause multiple disabilities, deficits and handicaps that interfere with social relationships, development and school achievement. They may have multiple problems, which strain family dynamics and influence the child's treatment. Parent activation, described as parents' knowledge, skills and confidence in dealing with their child's health and healthcare, has been shown to be an important factor in improving health outcomes. Research suggests that parents need edification to learn skills crucial to the treatment and management of their children's healthcare. Promoting positive parenting techniques may reduce negative parenting factors in families. This study aims to assess the acceptability, feasibility and estimated sample size of a randomised controlled trial (RCT) comparing an ADHD peer co-led educational programme added to treatment as usual (TAU). METHODS AND ANALYSIS Using a randomised waitlist controlled trial, parents of children aged 6-12 years newly diagnosed with ADHD, and referred to a child mental health outpatient clinic in Mid-Norway, will receive TAU concomitant with a peer co-facilitated parental engagement educational programme (n=25). Parents in the control group will receive TAU, and the educational programme treatment within a waitlist period of 3-6 months (n=25). Parent activation, satisfaction, well-being, quality of life and treatment adherence, will be assessed at baseline (T0), 2 weeks (T1) pre-post intervention (T2, T3) and at 3 months follow-up (T4). Shared decision making, parents preferred role in health-related decisions and involvement, parent-reported symptoms of ADHD and child's overall level of functioning will be assessed at T0 and T4. Such data will be used to calculate the required sample size for a full-scale RCT. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION Approval was obtained from the Regional Committee for Medicine and Health Research Ethics in Mid-Norway (ref: 2018/1196). The findings of this study are expected to provide valuable knowledge about how to optimise family education and management of ADHD and will be disseminated through presentations at conferences and publication in peer-reviewed journals. Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate a ludic strategy developed to promote the engagement of parents and caregivers in the pediatric patient safety actions. METHOD A qualitative research developed in the action-research modality, using the thematic content analysis method for data treatment, developed with caregivers of children admitted to the pediatric unit of the public hospital of Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, between May and October 2018. RESULTS Three thematic categories emerged: Learning about patient safety through the game; Game evaluation as a ludic strategy in promoting patient safety and; Change of perception and behavior of parents and caregivers in safety promotion actions. CONCLUSION The game was deemed as an important tool for patient safety knowledge transfer, motivating parents and caregivers to become more critical and more co-participant as for the hospitalized child care.

Abstract
PURPOSE To conduct Turkish validity and reliability study of the MISSCARE Survey-Pediatric version identifying the missed nursing care in pediatric units and its reasons. DESIGN AND METHODS The sample of this methodological study consisted of 222 nurses working in pediatric units. The study was conducted in three training and research hospitals and one university hospital. In the Turkish adaptation of the survey, confirmatory and explanatory factor analyses were performed within the context of language validity, content validity, and construct validity. In the reliability analyses of the survey, Cronbach's alpha for internal consistency analysis and intraclass correlation analysis for test re-test were used. RESULTS The language validity of the survey was conducted by expert linguists. Content validity index was calculated as 0.88 for section A and 0.90 for section B. Turkish version consisting of three factors and 16 items for section B of the survey met the construct validity. In reliability analyses it was determined that Cronbach's alpha values were between 0.82 and 0.88 in subscales of the survey and Intraclass Correlation Coefficient values were between 0.52 and 0.65 in subscales of the survey and 0.64 in overall survey. CONCLUSION In the Turkish version of MISSCARE Survey-Pediatric version, the section A with 29 items and the section B with 16 items were valid and reliable. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS The survey is a valid and reliable tool for intercultural studies revealing the nursing care activities missed by nurses working in pediatric clinics and the reasons for such activities.

Abstract
Background The hospitalization of children requires collaboration between parents and nurses in partnerships. This study examines parents’ and nurses’ experiences of ideal collaboration in treatment-centered and home-like care of hospitalized preschool children. Methods This qualitative study is part of a larger study of 12 parents and 17 nurses who were responsible for 11 hospitalized children. Data collection took place at a Norwegian general paediatric unit, and the data were gathered from observations of and qualitative interviews with the parents and nurses. The analysis was conducted in six steps, in alignment with Braun and Clarke. Results Two essential themes emerged from the analysis. (1) Treatment-centered care focuses on the following tasks in building relationships – gaining trust, securing – gaining voluntariness, distracting and comforting, and securing and gaining voluntariness. The purpose of treatment-centered care is to perform diagnostic procedures and offer treatment. (2) Home-like care, the purpose of which is to manage a child’s everyday situations in an unfamiliar environment, focuses on the following tasks: making familiar meals, maintaining normal sleeping patterns, adjusting to washing and dressing in new situations, and normalizing the time in between. From this pattern, we chose two narratives that capture the essence of ideal collaboration between parents and nurses. Conclusion The ideal collaboration between nurses and parents is characterized by flexibility and reciprocity, and is based on verbal and action dialogues. In treatment-centered care, parent-nurse collaboration was successful in its flow and dynamic, securing the children’s best interests. Meanwhile, the achievement of the children’s best interest within home-like care varied according to the level of collaboration, which in turn was related to the complexity of the children’s everyday situations.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To understand the experience of maternal overload in caring for children with cancer from the mother's perspective. METHOD Symbolic Interactionism was adopted as a theoretical framework and the Grounded Theory as methodological framework. The study was conducted in a public hospital, which is reference in pediatric oncology. Data was collected from six mothers through semi-structured interviews in the second semester of 2017. RESULTS Mothers of children with cancer attributed meaning to the care experience when trying to cope with the emotional, social, physical, financial, family-related, information and moral overload. Maternal overload arises as a dynamic inter-relation process between the many types of overload. CONCLUSION The maternal figure is the main person involved in care and experiences overload in caring for their sick child, facing limitations and responsibilities. The research acted as a key element to broaden the analysis and intervention of the family nurse, not only contributing to the theoretical construct related to maternal overload, but also and mainly to the scope of practice in patient care.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine NANDA-I nursing diagnoses and NIC nursing interventions in patients who underwent radical prostatectomy. METHOD A cross-sectional and descriptive study was conducted in a research and teaching hospital in western Turkey between June 2016 and June 2017. The sample included adult patients diagnosed with prostate cancer in the immediate postoperative period of radical prostatectomy. Data collection was performed using Gordon's Functional Health Patterns, NANDA-International and Nursing Interventions Classification Taxonomy Systems. RESULTS Participants were 54 adult patients. The main nursing diagnoses were in the classes of "physical injury", "self-care", "hydration" and "physical comfort". Some nursing diagnoses were identified in all patients, namely: "risk for deficient fluid volume", "risk for imbalanced fluid volume", "impaired urinary elimination". The most selected NIC interventions were in the classes of "risk management", "elimination management", "coping assistance", "tissue perfusion management" and "self-care facilitation". CONCLUSION future studies with larger populations are needed to explore the nursing diagnoses and effects of nursing interventions on patients who underwent radical prostatectomy.

Abstract
AIM To explore influences on nurses' missed care decision-making processes in acute hospital paediatric care. BACKGROUND Many contemporary studies describe the phenomenon of missed care. It is clear that environment and organizational culture influence the nursing activities; however, what influences their decision-making processes has not been investigated. METHOD A descriptive qualitative inquiry was performed using semi-structured interviews with paediatric nurses (n = 20) from one Italian paediatric hospital. FINDINGS Thematic analysis revealed four themes: nurses' value system; hospital logistics, structures and resources; prioritization processes; and the informal caregiver's role. CONCLUSION This paper offers insights into the various factors involved in nurses' decision-making process when contemplating missed care that will be of use to managers when planning care or addressing missed care in the paediatric clinical setting. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING MANAGEMENT Knowledge and awareness of missed care in children's nursing needs greater exploration, especially in relation to what influences nurses' decision-making choices around missed care. Overall, a greater understanding of this will help managers to manage situations effectively and ethically so that missed care does not impact on outcomes for children in health care.

Abstract
ABSTRACT Objective: to analyze patient safety incidents identified by caregivers of hospitalized children. Method: a qualitative, exploratory-descriptive study was carried out with 40 caregivers of children hospitalized in three hospital institutions in the city of Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil, from April to December 2016. Semi-structured, recorded and transcribed interviews were carried out in their entirety, submitted to a thematic analysis using the NVivo 11.0 software. Results: reports related to falls, infant feeding, patient/caregiver identification, medication process, communication, hand hygiene and hygiene of the hospital environment, spread of diseases, relations between caregivers and professionals and care processes/procedures were all cited. Final considerations: communication and the relations among caregivers and professionals are the main contributory factors for patient safety incidents, interfering with the quality of care. The participation of caregivers and engagement in child care may be strategies to be developed to promote a safety culture.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To analyze the perception of health professionals and companions/family about the development of communication for patient safety in pediatric hospitalizations. METHOD It is an exploratory-descriptive study with a qualitative approach, performed in pediatric clinical-surgical hospitalization units of three hospitals in Porto Alegre, RS, Brazil. 44 health professionals and 94 companions of hospitalized children participated in the study, to a total of 138 participants. Data collection took place between 2016 and 2017, through semi-structured interviews. A thematic content analysis was used. RESULTS Two categories emerged: "Barriers to an effective communication", addressing the failures and difficulties in the communication process and "Tools to improve communication", that present recommendations for improvements, especially instrumentalization of the companion/family member. CONCLUSIONS The barriers to an effective communication involve several factors, and effective communication strategies can assist in the development of improvements for pediatric patient safety.

Abstract
Resumo OBJETIVO Conhecer a percepção de familiares e cuidadores quanto à Segurança do Paciente em unidades de internação pediátrica. MÉTODO Estudo qualitativo exploratório-descritivo. Foram realizadas entrevistas semiestruturadas com 24 cuidadores, em três áreas de internação pediátrica de hospital universitário do sul do Brasil, entre junho e agosto de 2016. A análise de conteúdo temática foi realizada com auxílio do QSR NVivo 11.0. RESULTADOS Foram identificados nove temas, agrupados em duas categorias: “Pressupostos de segurança do paciente”, descrevendo conhecimentos que os cuidadores relacionaram à segurança do paciente e a necessidade de inclusão e parceria da família; e “Protocolos de segurança do paciente implementados na instituição”, destacando falas coerentes com protocolos já estabelecidos no hospital que promovem segurança. CONCLUSÕES As percepções dos cuidadores referentes a segurança do paciente em unidades de internação pediátrica demonstram que estes absorvem orientações que favorecem o cuidado seguro, embora não tenham um conhecimento formal a respeito do assunto.

Abstract
ABSTRACT Objective: to analyze the process of empowerment of the mothers of children hospitalized in a pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) according to Cheryl H. Gibson’s framework. Method: a qualitative study with a non-directive interview in groups was carried out with 14 mothers in the PICU of a pediatric teaching hospital in the state of Rio de Janeiro, whose data were submitted to thematic analysis. Results: all mothers underwent at least one phase of the process of empowerment. Some of them achieved the phase of participatory competence in the care for their children, being heard by the team and expressing their needs, opinions, and questions. Final considerations: attentive listening and information sharing with mothers is necessary, in order to provide essential support so that they undergo the process of empowerment, thus involving themselves in care and decision-making regarding their children.

Abstract
Resumo Objetivo: Compreender a necessidade de informação da família da criança com retinoblastoma. Métodos: Estudo qualitativo fundamentado no Modelo do Cuidado Centrado no Paciente e na Família. Participaram famílias de crianças em tratamento em uma instituição referência em oncologia pediátrica. A Análise Qualitativa de Conteúdo guiou a coleta e análise dos dados. Resultados: “A força da informação sobre retinoblastoma para a família da criança” revela o valor que a família atribui à informação sobre a doença da criança, em um tempo de intenso sofrimento; os caminhos que realiza para obter as informações; e os elementos que considera essenciais para se sentir atendida em seu direito. Conclusão: Torna-se primordial que a oferta de informações respeite o tempo da família, seja honesta, contemple as perspectivas de futuro para a criança, em um espaço dialógico. Dessa maneira, promove-se uma prática fundamentada no Modelo do Cuidado Centrado no Paciente e na Família.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES: to understand the family's experience of the child and/or teenager in palliative
care and building a representative theoretical model of the process experienced by
the family. METHODOLOGY: for this purpose the Symbolic Interactionism and the Theory Based on Data were
used. Fifteen families with kids and/or teenagers in palliative care were
interviewed, and data were collected through semi-structured interviews. RESULTS: after the comparative analysis of the data, a substantive theory was formed
"fluctuating between hope and hopelessness in a world changed by losses", composed
by: "having a life shattered ", "managing the new condition", "recognizing the
palliative care" and "relearning how to live". Hope, perseverance and spiritual
beliefs are determining factors for the family to continue fighting for the life
of their child in a context of uncertainty, anguish and suffering, due to the
medical condition of the child. Along the way, the family redefines values and
integrates palliative care in their lives. CONCLUSION: staying with the child at home is what was set and kept hope of dreaming about
the recovery and support of the child's life, but above all, what takes it away
even though temporarily is the possibility of their child's death when staying
within the context of the family.

Abstract
Objective to identify and analyse children's voices in healthcare decision making in the discourse of Brazil's child protection laws. Method Documentary normative analysis of Brazil's child protection legislation (1988-2012) based on the content analysis of nine texts, conducted in 2015. Results The legislation acknowledges and stresses the voice of children in the decision-making process in research and healthcare. Any recognition of the right to dignity, liberty, information, and protection depends on what the adult decision-maker (with parental authority) believes is the child's capacity for discernment and whether the situation will cause self-harm. Conclusions the normative child protection discourse grants children a voice, although with restrictions and under the authority of the adult with parental authority.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Understanding the conceptions of premature children caregivers on child development and associated factors. METHOD An exploratory-descriptive qualitative study of 12 families with children under three years of age. Interviews were submitted to thematic content analysis, systematized into the categories of Bioecological Theory of Human Development: Process, Person, Context and Time, and in the Functional Development category. RESULTS There are concerns about impairment in the current and future development of a Person/child defined as fragile as a result of premature birth (Time dimension), minimized by the scope of observable competencies such as motor skills. The Context, especially family and health services, and Proximal Processes, described as one-way caregiver interactions, are considered determinants of development. Functional Development is considered a natural consequence and result of education. The support network is crucial, supporting or limiting care. CONCLUSION Concerns about the development mobilize caregivers to stimulate the premature child/person and requests family and healthcare assistance.

Abstract
Objectives Social factors have profound effects on health. Children are especially vulnerable to social influences, particularly in their early years. Adverse social exposures in childhood can lead to chronic disorders later in life. Here, we sought to identify and evaluate the impact of social factors on child health in Ghana. As Ghana is unlikely to achieve the Millennium Development Goals’ target of reducing child mortality by two-thirds between 1990 and 2015, we deemed it necessary to identify social determinants that might have contributed to the non-realisation of this goal. Methods ScienceDirect, PubMed, MEDLINE via EBSCO and Google Scholar were searched for published articles reporting on the influence of social factors on child health in Ghana. After screening the 98 articles identified, 34 of them that met our inclusion criteria were selected for qualitative review. Results Major social factors influencing child health in the country include maternal education, rural-urban disparities (place of residence), family income (wealth/poverty) and high dependency (multiparousity). These factors are associated with child mortality, nutritional status of children, completion of immunisation programmes, health-seeking behaviour and hygiene practices. Conclusions Several social factors influence child health outcomes in Ghana. Developing more effective responses to these social determinants would require sustainable efforts from all stakeholders including the Government, healthcare providers and families. We recommend the development of interventions that would support families through direct social support initiatives aimed at alleviating poverty and inequality, and indirect approaches targeted at eliminating the dependence of poor health outcomes on social factors. Importantly, the expansion of quality free education interventions to improve would-be-mother’s health knowledge is emphasised.

Abstract
ABSTRATC Study based on Heidegger's existential phenomenology. The objective was to understand the experience of parents of children with cancer in treatment failure conditions. Participants were eight parents of eight patients seen at an oncology center from January to May 2014. Interviews were conducted guided by the question: Tell me about your experience of being a family member of a child with cancer in treatment failure conditions? Three ontological themes emerged: the phenomenon unveiled in the discovery of the child's cancer; experiencing the process involving the child's cancer; unveiling the possibility of the child's death. It was evidenced that the experience of these parents was permeated by intense and devastating feelings towards the early loss, annihilating dreams of a desired future. It is essential for nursing to look more attentively at the family of terminal patients.

Abstract
ABSTRACT Qualitative study, with worth comprehensive approach aimed at understanding the actions of companions that can affect the safety of hospitalized patients. The study was conducted in a public hospital in Bahia, from May to July 2014 with 16 families of patients dependent for self-care. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews. The content was analyzed and discussed using a comprehensive approach. The results showed that the companions care for their relatives and are knowledgeable on infection prevention, the safe use of medication and materials, adopt measures to prevent pressure ulcers and seek to establish an assertive interaction with the nursing team. It was concluded that the actions taken by the companions are aimed at patient safety and established through the emotional environment based on open rationality.
