Abstract
BACKGROUND The global variable of missed nursing care and practice environment are widely recognized as two crucial contextual factors that significantly impact the quality of nursing care. This study assessed the current status of missed nursing care and the characteristics of the nursing practice environment in Iran. Additionally, this study aimed to explore the relationship between these two variables. METHODS We conducted an across-sectional study from May 2021 to January 2022 in which we investigated 255 nurses. We utilized the Missed Nursing Care Survey, the Nursing Work Index-Practice Environment Scale, and a demographic questionnaire to gather the necessary information. We used the Shapiro‒Wilk test, Pearson correlation coefficient test, and multiple linear regression test in SPSS version 20 for the data analyses. RESULTS According to the present study, 41% of nurses regularly or often overlooked certain aspects of care, resulting in an average score of 32.34 ± 7.43 for missed nursing care. It is worth noting that attending patient care conferences, providing patient bathing and skin care, and assisting with toileting needs were all significant factors contributing to the score. The overall practice environment was unfavorable, with a mean score of 2.25 ± 0.51. Interestingly, 'nursing foundations for quality of care' was identified as the sole predictor of missed nursing care, with a β value of -0.22 and a p-value of 0.036. CONCLUSIONS This study identified attending patient care interdisciplinary team meetings and delivering basic care promptly as the most prevalent instances of missed nursing care. Unfortunately, the surveyed hospitals exhibited an undesirable practice environment, which correlated with a higher incidence of missed nursing care. These findings highlight the crucial impact of nurses' practice environment on care delivery. Addressing the challenges in the practice environment is essential for reducing instances of missed care, improving patient outcomes, and enhancing overall healthcare quality.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Missed nursing care undermines nursing standards of care and minimising this phenomenon is crucial to maintaining adequate patient safety and the quality of patient care. The concept is a neglected aspect of human resource for health thinking, and it remains understudied in low-income and middle-income country (LMIC) settings which have 90% of the global nursing workforce shortages. Our objective in this review was to document the prevalence of missed nursing care in LMIC, identify the categories of nursing care that are most missed and summarise the reasons for this. METHODS We conducted a systematic review searching Medline, Embase, Global Health, WHO Global index medicus and CINAHL from their inception up until August 2021. Publications were included if they were conducted in an LMIC and reported on any combination of categories, reasons and factors associated with missed nursing care within in-patient settings. We assessed the quality of studies using the Newcastle Ottawa Scale. RESULTS Thirty-one studies met our inclusion criteria. These studies were mainly cross-sectional, from upper middle-income settings and mostly relied on nurses' self-report of missed nursing care. The measurement tools used, and their reporting were inconsistent across the literature. Nursing care most frequently missed were non-clinical nursing activities including those of comfort and communication. Inadequate personnel numbers were the most important reasons given for missed care. CONCLUSIONS Missed nursing care is reported for all key nursing task areas threatening care quality and safety. Data suggest nurses prioritise technical activities with more non-clinical activities missed, this undermines holistic nursing care. Improving staffing levels seems a key intervention potentially including sharing of less skilled activities. More research on missed nursing care and interventions to tackle it to improve quality and safety is needed in LMIC. PROSPERO registration number: CRD42021286897.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To analyze the structure of social representations on the preventive measures to pressure injury of nursing teams. METHOD Qualitative research, based on the structural approach of Social Representations. It was conducted with 103 nursing professionals from a specialized hospital, using the Word Association Test. Data were submitted to prototypical analysis, using two analysis techniques of centrality, similarity and double negation. RESULTS The evocations "care" and "decubitus" made up the central core of the representation, which was structured based on the imagery dimension of changing position, from which a hierarchy of preventive measures occurs. The term "care" referred to the normative dimension of representation as a responsibility of nursing, and to the practical dimension, as preventive actions with the use of technologies. CONCLUSION The image, normative and practice dimensions are part of the representation structure and guide compliance with preventive measures.

Abstract
Nurses exhibit higher rates of presenteeism than other professionals, with consequences for the quality of care and patient safety. However, nurses’ perceptions of these issues have been poorly explored. This study investigated the perceptions and experiences of frontline nurses and nurse managers in Switzerland and Portugal about the consequences of presenteeism and strategies to minimize it in different healthcare settings. Our qualitative study design used video focus groups involving 55 participants from both countries. Thematic analysis of their transcribed discussions revealed six themes surrounding the consequences of presenteeism: the personal impact on nurses’ health and wellbeing, on their family relationships, and on professional frustration and dissatisfaction; the professional impact on work dynamics; the social impact on the quality of care and patient safety and on society’s impressions of the profession. At the individual, collective, and institutional levels, six strategies were evoked to minimize presenteeism: encouraging professionals’ self-knowledge; creating a positive work atmosphere; facilitating communication channels; developing a positive organizational culture; implementing preventive/curative institutional interventions; identifying and documenting situations linked to presenteeism. Nurses’ perceptions and experiences provided a deeper understanding of their presenteeism and revealed underused pathways toward preventing and minimizing presenteeism via bottom-up approaches.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Missed nursing care is a global issue in acute healthcare settings. It is a complex phenomenon that refers to nursing care that is required by patients but left undone or significantly delayed. AIM To investigate the nature of missed nursing care and influencing factors in a general medical ward in an acute care hospital in Brisbane, Australia. METHOD This is a descriptive case study. The study was carried out in a 29-bed inpatient general medical/cardiology/telemetry ward in an acute care tertiary hospital. RESULTS The study ward has been identified as a high complexity unit. The survey data found that the most frequent nursing care elements missed, as reported by the patients, were oral care, response to machine beep, and response to call light. The most frequent nurse-reported missed care items were ambulation, monitoring fluid intake/output and attendance at interdisciplinary conferences. CONCLUSION Despite mandating nurse-to-patient ratios in the study ward, inadequate staffing was still perceived as being problematic and one of the most frequent reasons leading to missed nursing care. This possible disconnect between mandated staffing ratios and the persistence of perceived missed care suggests a more complex relationship than can be managed by macro (large-scale) resourcing formulas alone.

Abstract
ABSTRACT Objective: To evaluate the reasons correlated with the omission of nursing care in a university hospital. Method: Analytical cross-sectional design, developed in a university hospital in Northeast Brazil, from January to February 2020. The study population consisted of nurses and nursing technicians who worked in direct patient care. The Brazilian version of the Missed Nursing Care Survey was applied in a convenience sample consisting of 227 participants (79 nurses and 148 nursing technicians). Univariate and bivariate statistics were calculated in the software Statistical Package for Social Science, version 26.0. Results: The most omitted nursing care was walking three times a day or as prescribed (70.9%). The most prevalent reason was an unexpected increase in the volume and/or severity of patients in the unit (93.0%). Positive, albeit weak, correlations were found between overall care omission, as well as omissions by priority level, and reasons for omission given by nurses and nursing technicians (p < 0.05). Conclusion: The study showed that the omission of nursing care covered all five dimensions of the instrument, mainly correlated with labor and material resources.

Abstract
Objective: to assess the correlations between the patient safety culture, the missed
Nursing care, and the reasons for the omission in the obstetric area. Method: a cross-sectional study, conducted in 2019, with 62 Nursing professionals
working in the obstetric area of a teaching hospital in southern Brazil. The
MISSCARE-Brasil and Hospital Survey on Patient Safety Culture instruments
were used. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, means
comparison test and Spearman correlation. Results: the overall mean of positive answers for the safety culture was 34.9 (±
17.4). The care of assessing the vital signs and monitoring capillary blood
glucose were the most prioritized, with airway aspiration and oral hygiene
being the most overlooked. The main reasons for the omissions refer to labor
resources and to inadequate staffing. A significant and inversely
proportional correlation was found between the patient safety culture and
overlooked nursing care (r=-0.393). Conclusion: the safety culture of the obstetric area was assessed as fragile by the
Nursing professionals. The more the safety culture is strengthened and the
greater investment in labor and human resources, the less care is
overlooked.

Parents' Perspectives on the Health Education Provided by Clinicians in Portuguese Pediatric Hospitals and Primary Care for Children Aged 1 to 10 Years. INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF ENVIRONMENTAL RESEARCH AND PUBLIC HEALTH 2020; 17:ijerph17186854. [PMID: 32961741 PMCID: PMC7557745 DOI: 10.3390/ijerph17186854] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Download PDF] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 08/12/2020] [Revised: 09/16/2020] [Accepted: 09/17/2020] [Indexed: 11/19/2022]
Abstract
This study aimed to analyze parents’ perspectives of the health education practice provided by health professionals to children and parents. This is a descriptive research with a qualitative approach, based on the conceptual framework of health education provided by health professionals to children/young people and families. The selection took place by non-probabilistic sampling of convenience, and was developed with parents/users of health units for pediatric hospitalization and primary health care in northern Portugal. Data were collected using semi-structured interviews with 20 parents from March to April 2019, and were analyzed using the content analysis technique. Health education was understood to enhance health, and the evaluation was carried out according to planning and partnership. The most frequent topics were food, the national vaccination plan, and accident prevention. The evaluation shown is very positive, pointing to the nurse as the professional of choice for this practice and thus contributing to the visibility of nursing. We can state that the perspectives of parents about the health education carried out by health professionals show a practice that values health; is adaptable to the complexity of the binomial child and parents; is capable of influencing health determinants with sustainability, efficacy, and effectiveness; and gives visibility to nurses’ positions as health educators.
