Detection of Chlortetracycline Hydrochloride in Milk with a Solid SERS Substrate Based on Self-assembled Gold Nanobipyramids

Construction of nitrogen-doped carbon dots-based fluorescence probe for rapid, efficient and sensitive detection of chlortetracycline

Antibiotics are widely used in clinical medicine due to their excellent antibacterial abilities. As typical emerging pollutants, their misuse can lead to excess antibiotics entering the environment, causing antimicrobial resistance and leading to serious health problems via food chain. Herein, a nano-fluorescent probe based on nitrogen-doped carbon dots (N-CDs) was constructed for the sensitive detection of chlortetracycline (CTC). N-CDs with stable fluorescence were synthesized by hydrothermal method using alizarin red and melamine as raw materials. The N-CDs exhibited significant independence to excitation wavelength. The fluorescence of N-CDs was significantly quenched by CTC ascribing to the fluorescence resonance energy transfer mechanism. The concentration of N-CDs, solution pH and incubation time were optimized to obtain the optimal detection parameters. Under optimal conditions, CTC exhibited excellent linearity over the range of 20-1200 μg/L, and the detection limit was 8.74 μg/L. The method was validated with actual water samples and achieved satisfied spiked recoveries of 97.6-102.6%. Therefore, the proposed method has significant application value in the detection of CTC in waters.

Glutathione S-transferase templated copper nanoclusters as a fluorescent probe for turn-on sensing of chlorotetracycline

Hereby, facile-green copper nanoclusters templated by glutathione S-transferase (GST-CuNCs) have been innovatively synthesized via a simple one-pot stirring method at room temperature. The as-prepared nanoclusters exhibited uniform size with satisfactory fluorescence intensity, good stability and low cytotoxicity. Significantly, the fluorescence of the obtained GST-CuNCs could be considerably enhanced by the addition of chlorotetracycline (CTC) rather than other analogues of CTC, which was ascribed to the aggregation-induced enhancement caused by the interaction between CTC and GST. The enhanced fluorescence intensity demonstrated a good linear correlation with the CTC concentration in the range of 30-120 μM (R2 = 0.99517), and the low detection limit was 69.7 nM. Furthermore, the proposed approach showed favorable selectivity and anti-interference toward CTC among prevalent ions and amino acids. Additionally, this nanoprobe was also applied to the quantitative detection of CTC in serum samples with satisfactory outcomes, which demonstrated excellent prospects for practical applications.

Ultrasensitive colorimetric detection of tetracyclines based on in-situ growth of gold nanoflowers

A colorimetric method based on in-situ generation of gold nanoflowers for the detection of tetracyclines (TCs) was proposed. We found that gold nanoflowers could be formed in the HAuCl₄-NH₂OH redox reaction directly without the addition of small-sized gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) as seeds when an alkaline borax buffer solution was employed as the reaction medium. Interestingly, the shape and size of the generated gold nanoflowers were regulated with TC. Briefly, large flower-like gold nanoparticles were formed with a low concentration of TC while small spherical gold nanoparticles were generated with a high concentration of TC. The generated gold nanoflowers exhibited different surface plasmon absorption (SPR) properties. Thus, a simple and rapid colorimetric method was established for the detection of TC antibiotics. This method exhibited high sensitivity for the detection of TC, oxytetracycline (OTC), and doxycycline (DC) with detection limits of 2.23 nM, 1.19 nM, and 5.81 nM, respectively. The proposed colorimetric method was applied to the determination of TC in both milk samples and water samples.

Colorimetric and visual determination of iodide ions via morphology transition of gold nanobipyramids

The gold nanobipyramids (Au NBPs) are widely used in the analytical detection of biochemistry due to their unique localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) properties. In our developed approach, I^- in kelp was detected by etching Au NBPs in the presence of IO₃^-. Under acidic conditions, IO₃^- reacted rapidly with I^- to form I₂, subsequently I₂ reacted with I^- to form the intermediate I₃^-. In the presence of CTAB, Au NBPs were etched by I₂ derived from I₃^-, resulting in a decrease in the aspect ratio of Au NBPs, to form a significant blue shift of LSPR longitudinal peak and color variation of colloid which changed from blue-green to magenta and could be employed to quantitatively detect the concentration of I^- with the naked eye. A linear relationship can be found between the LSPR peak changes with the I^- concentration in a wide range from 4.0 μM to 15.0 μM, and the sensitive limit of detection (LOD) was 0.2 μM for UV-vis spectroscopy and the obvious color changes with a visual LOD was 4.0 μM for the naked eye. Benefiting from the high specificity, the proposed colorimetric detection of I^- in kelp samples was achieved, indicating the available potential of the colorimetric detection for the determination of I^- in real samples. What's more, this detection procedure was time-saving and could avoid tedious procedures.

A highly selective fluorescent sensor for chlortetracycline based on histidine-templated copper nanoclusters

In this study, histidine-protected copper nanoclusters (Cu NCs@His) were established by using a one-pot method, which histidine and ascorbic acid were applied as the template and reducing agent, respectively. The as-developed Cu NCs@His endued green emission wavelength at 494 nm with the excitation of 378 nm. The Cu NCs@His exhibited green fluorescence under UV light (365 nm). Using Cu NCs@His as a pattern nanosensor, the fluorescent "turn off" mechanism was fabricated for the determination of chlortetracycline in the light of the linear decrease of fluorescence intensities around 494 nm. The chlortetracycline conducted as a quencher, leading to reveal an excellent linear relationship between ln(F₀/F) of Cu NCs@His and chlortetracycline concentrations with the range of 0.5-200 μM, and the detection limit was 0.876 μM. The fluorescence quenching of Cu NCs@His revealed excellent selectivity for chlortetracycline over other potential interfering substances in the human body. This strategy was exhibited to be a convenient sensing platform for the detection of chlortetracycline in real medical samples, which could unfold a brand new and direct system for the sensing of chlortetracycline in real samples.

Plasmonic Metal Nanoparticles Hybridized with 2D Nanomaterials for SERS Detection: A Review

In SERS analysis, the specificity of molecular fingerprints is combined with potential single-molecule sensitivity so that is an attractive tool to detect molecules in trace amounts. Although several substrates have been widely used from early on, there are still some problems such as the difficulties to bind some molecules to the substrate. With the development of nanotechnology, an increasing interest has been focused on plasmonic metal nanoparticles hybridized with (2D) nanomaterials due to their unique properties. More frequently, the excellent properties of the hybrids compounds have been used to improve the drawbacks of the SERS platforms in order to create a system with outstanding properties. In this review, the physics and working principles of SERS will be provided along with the properties of differently shaped metal nanoparticles. After that, an overview on how the hybrid compounds can be engineered to obtain the SERS platform with unique properties will be given.

Detection of Soluble Mercury in Cinnabar Using a CV-Ag NPs SERS Probe

In the current work a uniform morphological Ag nanoparticles (Ag NPs) were prepared with ascorbic acid as a reducing agent and citrate as a stabilizer. The surface of Ag NPs modified by crystal violet (CV) and potassium iodide (KI) was used as an aggregation agent to obtain CV modified Ag NPs (CV-Ag NPs) probes for detecting mercury ions. The mercury ions could be reduced to mercury molecules by citrate, and then deposited on the surface of Ag NPs, leading to the separation of CV molecules from the surface of Ag NPs. Therefore, the SERS signal intensity of CV decreased with the increase of the Hg²⁺ concentration and the concentration of Hg²⁺ was in the range of 1 × 10^-11 to 1 × 10^-5 M. Taking the change of the characteristic peak intensity of CV at 913 cm^-1 as a reference, the SERS spectrum intensity of CV has a linear relationship with the Hg²⁺ concentration. The equation is y = -333.55x + 1343.05, where the linear correlation coefficient is R² = 0.980, and the recovery rate is between 84.20 to 105.60%. Finally, the CV-Ag NPs probe was used to quickly detect soluble mercury in cinnabar. Compared with the conventional large-scale instrument detection method, this simple and fast method, can be applied for rapid detection of soluble mercury, and has a certain significance for concerning the research of mineral medicine processing mechanism.

Nitrogen-doped carbon dots derived from hawthorn for the rapid determination of chlortetracycline in pork samples

In recent years, the methods for rapidly detecting antibiotics using the unique fluorescent properties of carbon dots have attracted increasing attentions. The purpose of this study is to prepare carbon dots by hawthorn and establish a rapid fluorescence sensor for the detection of chlortetracycline in pork samples. An environmentally friendly nitrogen-doped carbon dots (N-CDs) with hawthorn powder as the carbon source and diethylenetriamine (DETA) as the nitrogen source was synthesized by one-pot hydrothermal process. The preparation conditions of the N-CDs were optimized. Subsequently, the characteristics of the N-CDs were elucidated by fluorescence, UV absorption, transmission electron microscope, fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The N-CDs showed a quantum yield of 22.96%, emission at 447 nm at the maximum excitation wavelength of 370 nm and an average particle diameter of 3.17 nm. Meanwhile, the factors affecting the fluorescence intensity of the N-CDs were studied. Moreover, the fluorescence quenching method for detecting chlortetracycline in pork was established and optimized. Under the best experimental conditions, the linear range (R² = 0.9992) was developed over 0.4-20 μg mL^-1 with a detection limit of 0.073 ± 0.005 μg mL^-1 (S/N = 3). Chlortetracycline in pork samples had been successfully detected with good recoveries of 93.62%-103.18%, which suggested that the study provided a new approach for the detection of chlortetracycline in pork.

DNA Base Pair Stacking Assembly of Anisotropic Nanoparticles for Biosensing and Ordered Assembly

Anisotropic gold nanoparticles have attracted great interest due to their unique physicochemical properties derived from the shape anisotropy. Manipulation of their interfacial interactions, and thereby the assembling behaviors are often requisite in their applications ranging from optical sensing and diagnosis to self-assembly. Recently, the control of interfacial force based on base pair stacking of DNA terminals have offered a new avenue to surface engineering of nanostructures. In this review, we focus on the DNA base stacking-induced assembly of anisotropic gold nanoparticles, such as nanorods and nanotriangles. The fundamental aspects of anisotropic gold nanoparticles are provided, including the mechanism of the anisotropic growth, the properties arising from the anisotropic shape, and the construction of DNA-grafted anisotropic gold nanoparticles. Then, the advanced applications of their functional assemblies in biosensing and ordered assembly are summarized, followed by a comparison with gold nanospheres. Finally, conclusions and the direction of outlooks are given including future challenges and opportunities in this field.
