The effect of autologous serum eye drops on the conjunctivalization over exposed porous polyethylene orbital implant (Medpor(®)) in the rabbit model

Topical autologous serum promotes enucleation wound healing in retinoblastoma patients

Two retinoblastoma patients underwent uneventful enucleations while undergoing perioperative chemotherapy. In both cases the postoperative course was complicated by poor conjunctival wound healing. Administration of topical autologous serum was associated with wound healing and conjunctivalization of these wounds.

Ophthalmic use of blood-derived products

There is a wide spectrum of blood-derived products that have been used in many different medical and surgical specialties with success. Blood-derived products for clinical use can be extracted from autologous or allogeneic specimens of blood, but recombinant products are also commonly used. A number of blood derivatives have been used for a wide range of ocular conditions, from the ocular surface to the retina. With stringent preparation guidelines, the potential risk of transmission of blood-borne diseases is minimized. We review blood-derived products and how they are improving the management of ocular disease.

Autologous serum for anterior tissue necrosis after porous orbital implant

Orbital implants are now routinely used after enucleation and evisceration. However exposure of the implant can lead to infection and extrusion. Hence, early repair of larger exposure with graft material is required. We describe three cases where early postoperative mucosal dehiscence was successfully managed with autologous serum.
