Abstract
The aim of this study was to compare the effects of feeding pasteurized waste milk or saleable milk to calves on weight, health and emergence of antimicrobial resistance in Escherichia coli strains isolated from those calves. An experimental study under field conditions on a commercial pasture-based Argentinian dairy farm was carried out. Forty Holstein calves were assigned randomly to either pasteurized waste milk (PWM) or non-pasteurized saleable milk (SM). The antimicrobial agents (AM) used on the farm, both to treat or prevent diseases, were recorded. The passive immunity level, calf live weight, AM presence in milk, clinical examination of calves, and E. coli isolation and identification, were performed. A total of 258 E. coli strains were isolated from fecal samples (132 isolates from SM calves and 126 from PWM calves at six sampling times). All E. coli isolated were used to perform AM susceptibility tests (disc diffusion and agar dilution). No differences were observed between groups in health parameters, average daily gain or prevalence of resistant E. coli strains to any AM evaluated throughout the study. Peaks of trimethoprim, sulfamethoxazole and enrofloxacin minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) were observed at 30 d in E. coli from both groups of calves, whilst additional peaks to tetracyclin and ampicillin were observed only in SM calves. All MIC apart from gentamicin decreased at 75 and 90 d of age (during the weaning period). Gentamicin MIC behaved differently, having no peaks and increasing at 90 d only in PWM group. In conclusion, we found no evidence that emergence of antibiotic resistance is related to the consumption of pasteurized waste milk.

Abstract
Calf behavior is closely related to its early growth, production performance, and health performance. Continuous behavior recording is the most accurate but also time-consuming method used for monitoring animal behaviors, so the instantaneous sampling method is often adopted to minimize the time required to quantify behavioral observations in animal studies. Moreover, the optimal sampling intervals required to yield accurate information for estimating Holstein dairy calves' behaviors are still unknown. Our primary objective was to determine the most optimal sampling intervals for monitoring behaviors of Holstein dairy calves during preweaning and weaning periods to improve efficiency while maintaining reliability. The secondary objective was to describe their behavioral patterns. Rumination, lying, standing, and non-nutritive oral behavior (NNOB) data of 18 calves (observation time: 360 h/calf, 6,480 h in total) were continuously recorded for 15 d (3 d at 1, 3, 6, 9, and 12 wk of age). The continuous behavioral data were compared with instantaneous sampling at 5 s, 10 s, 15 s, 30 s,1 min, 3 min, 5 min, 10 min, 15 min, 30 min, and 60 min intervals. Sampling intervals were considered accurate if they met 4 criteria: coefficient of determination ≥0.90 (i.e., strongly related to true values), slope = 1, intercept = 0 (i.e., they did not over- or underestimate true values), and relative error <10%. The most optimal sampling interval was considered the highest sampling interval among the 11 sampling intervals that meet the criteria for accurate monitoring. As expected, the strength of the linear relationship between the continuous recording and instantaneous sampling decreased as the sampling intervals increased. The results varied across the different behaviors, with rumination, lying, standing, and NNOB being reliable at instantaneous recordings of 3 min, 10 min, 10 min, and 1 min for the preweaning period (1, 3, and 6 wk of age) and 10 min, 10 min, 15 min, and 3 min for the postweaning period (9 and 12 wk of age). In terms of behavioral patterns, lying time decreased, whereas rumination, standing, and NNOB time increased with age. After weaning, no significant changes in time spent performing these behaviors. Additionally, the rumination behavioral pattern becomes stable after wk 6 with decreasing after the morning feeding and occurring mainly in the morning. In conclusion, instantaneous sampling is a reliable method for monitoring the behaviors of dairy calves, but the optimal sampling intervals should be selected based on different ages and management conditions.

Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate the performance and metabolic changes in dairy calves fed in a step-up/step-down program and supplemented with lysine and methionine in a milk replacer (MR) or starter concentrate (SC). Male Holstein calves (n = 45) were blocked and distributed in the control without supplementation (1) and with lysine and methionine supplementation in the SC to achieve an intake of 17 and 5.3 g/d, respectively (2), and in the MR to achieve the same daily intake (3). MR was fed 4 L/d until the 2nd week, 8 L/d from the 3rd to 6th week, and 4 L/d from the 7th to 8th week, when calves were weaned. The calves were followed until the 10th week of age. Feed intake was measured daily. Weight and body measurements were registered weekly, and blood samples were collected biweekly. The lysine and methionine intake during the whole period was higher when supplementation occurred via MR. There was a supplementation effect for average daily gain after weaning, and the animals supplemented in the MR had lower BW than those that were not supplemented. Supplementation in MR decreased starter intake at the 10th week and total intake (g DM/d) after weaning. Supplementation with lysine and methionine in the MR or the SC did not benefit the performance or metabolism of dairy calves in the step-up/step-down program. Further studies are needed to understand the effects of amino acid supplementation on feed intake.

Abstract
The profitability of cattle farming is largely determined by ensuring high-quality breeding animals for replacement and longevity in production. The provision of breeding animals requires adequate fertility of the cowherd and then intensive weight gain in the calf rearing period. For ensuring these demands, many management aspects must be considered. Continuous monitoring of the herd’s health status, including redox status, is essential. This review aims to provide a summary of relevant scientific data published in the last few decades regarding the role of oxidative stress (OS) in infertility of dairy cows and developmental diseases in calves, the major predisposing factors, and possible prevention.

Abstract
Optimising heifer growth rate may offer an opportunity to improve lifetime milk yield per cow, enhancing the environmental and economic efficiency of dairy farming operations. The effect of dairy heifer pre-breeding average daily weight gain (ADGPB) on first lactation milk yield was investigated. This observational study employed a data set comprising 265 Holstein-Friesian, or Holstein-Friesian-cross-Jersey heifers from seven commercial, spring-calving, pasture-based dairy herds, where the major component of the diet was grazed grass. These were weighed at birth and prior to breeding and ADGPB was calculated. Milk recordings were performed throughout the heifers' first lactation and 305-day yield figures calculated from these records. Yields were corrected to 4% fat and 3.1% protein to create standardised 305-day milk yield (SMY), which was the outcome of interest. Median ADGPB was 0.72 kg/day. Median 305-day yield was 5 967 kg. Linear regression was used to investigate the effect of weight and genetic, age and first calving factors on SMY. Pre-breeding average daily weight gain, age at first calving and predicted transmitting abilities for milk protein production and calving interval were all significant in the final model, which also included the random effects of farm and month of calving within year. ADGPB was quadratically related to first lactation SMY, with an ADGPB of 0.82 kg/day corresponding to the maximum predicted SMY. The model predicted that a heifer growing at 0.82 kg/day would produce 1 120 kg more SMY than a heifer growing at 0.55 kg/day, 218 kg more than a heifer growing at 0.7 kg/day and 103 kg more than a heifer growing at 0.90 kg/day. Manipulation of heifer growth rate may offer a viable method of increasing first lactation milk yield.

Abstract
The rates of development of 2 tissues in mammary glands, parenchyma (PAR) and the mammary fat pad (MFP), in response to nutrition in early life might have a major bearing on lifetime milk production. Historical studies reported that feeding greater amounts of dietary nutrients from postweaning to puberty increased growth rates of heifers and stimulated the growth of MFP at the expense of PAR, which might suggest compromised mammary development and future milk production. The current study sought to determine if a higher volume of whole milk (8 vs. 4 L/d) offered to calves would increase rates of growth and development of PAR in mammary glands at weaning (1 to 12 wk). To measure these tissues, we developed 2 simple methods to assess the size of PAR and MFP at the time of screening using ultrasound. We report that calves offered 8 L/d of whole milk had greater rates of growth until weaning (0.86 ± 0.06 vs. 0.81 ± 0.09 kg/d), compared with calves offered 4 L/d. Ultrasonography showed that despite the faster rates of growth in calves offered 8 L/d of milk/d, the ratio of PAR:MFP depth was 40% less at weaning in the front glands (34%) compared with calves offered 4 L of milk/d. Rear glands were less impaired. The ultrasound methods developed here might be useful to monitor the development of mammary glands in response to different nutritional regimens during the preweaning period.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to monitor the changes in growth, dry matter intake, and blood profiles (nutrition and reproductive hormones) of dairy heifers in response to green grass-based diets. Twelve crossbred heifers were equally divided into group 1: rice straw and concentrate; group 2: rice straw, green grass, and concentrate; group 3: green grass and concentrate; group 4: green grass, soybean hay, and concentrate. Dry matter intake in group 4 was found 6% higher (P < 0.05) than group 1. Negative body weight gain was found in group 1 and group 2 showed 14% higher body weight gain per 30 days compared to groups 3 and 4 (P < 0.05). Heifers in group 4 had significantly (P < 0.05) higher heart girth gain, serum albumin, urea, and blood urea nitrogen than the heifers in other groups. Endocrine parameters were found similar among groups. Overall, supply of green grass especially a mix of leguminous and non-leguminous was found advantageous in heifer feeding.

Abstract
AIM To determine whether the retention time of curd in the abomasum of calves was influenced by supplementing milk with a plant-derived carbohydrate and amino acid supplement, evaluated non-invasively using ultrasonography. METHODS Female dairy calves aged between 2-6 days of age were sourced from a commercial farm in March 2013. All calves were fed whole milk until weaning (4 L per day); 21 calves were supplemented with a probiotic until 18 days of age, and thereafter with a plant-derived complex carbohydrate and amino acid supplement until weaning, and 22 calves were just fed whole milk. Treatment groups were balanced for age, weight and breed. At 9-14, 24-29 and 52-57 days of age, the abomasum of each calf was examined using ultrasonography immediately before and after feeding, 1 and 2 hours after feeding, and then at 30 minute intervals until curd was no longer visible in the abomasum. Abomasal volume and curd size were recorded to assess retention time of curd in the abomasum. RESULTS At 9-14 days of age, mean retention time of curd in the abomasum was similar (4.6 hours) in both groups. At 24-29 days of age, when the supplemented calves had been receiving the supplement for approximately 10 days, mean curd retention time was longer by 1.4 (SE 0.28) hours in supplemented compared with unsupplemented calves (p<0.001). At 52-57 days of age, mean retention time was longer by 0.7 (SE 0.34) hours compared to unsupplemented calves (p=0.05). CONCLUSION Using ultrasonography, changes in abomasal content could be followed non-invasively over time and it was demonstrated that the plant-derived complex carbohydrate supplement increased the curd retention time in the abomasum. We speculate that the increased retention time enables an increased availability of nutrients following a more complete digestion of milk, thereby improving animal performance.

Abstract
Accelerated growth of dairy calves in the pre-weaning phase has been shown to increase productivity of dairy cows during their lifetime. The increased weight gain during the pre-weaning phase is not the driving factor behind the changes in life-time productivity as the weight gained is inconsequential in terms of pre-lactation and weight gain. Furthermore, there are no differences in weight of heifers at the start of first lactation. The increased weight gain during the pre-weaning period must, therefore, initiate cellular changes within the animal. Research has focussed on increasing total nutritional supply or an increase in protein supply for promotion of such changes. The benefits of antioxidants in animal nutrition have been known for a long period of time. However, they have gained prominence with enforced reduction in use of antibiotics in many animal production systems. The role of antioxidants in nutrition of both the calf and the dam before parturition is critical for preventing disease and optimising growth weight of the pre-weaned calf. However, studies are yet to demonstrate a role, outside of preventive health, for the use of antioxidants in the pre-weaning period for increasing total life-time production of the dairy cow.

Abstract
60S ribosomal protein L35 (RPL35) is an important component of the 60S ribosomal subunit and has a role in protein translation and endoplasmic reticulum (ER) docking. However, few studies have investigated RPL35 in eukaryotes and much remains to be learned. Here, we analyzed the function of RPL35 in β-casein (CSN2) synthesis and secretion in bovine mammary epithelial cells (BMECs). We found that methionine (Met) could promote the expressions of CSN2 and RPL35. Analysis of overexpression and inhibition of RPL35 confirmed that it could mediate the Met signal and regulate CSN2 expression. The mechanism of CSN2 regulation by RPL35 was analyzed by coimmunoprecipitation (Co-IP), colocalization, fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) and gene mutation. We found that RPL35 could control ribosome translational elongation during synthesis of CSN2 by interacting with eukaryotic translational elongation factor 2 (eEF2), and that eEF2 was the signaling molecule downstream of RPL35 controlling this process. RPL35 could also control the secretion of CSN2 by locating it to the ER. Taken together, these results revealed that, RPL35 was an important positive regulatory factor involving in the Met-mediated regulation of CSN2 translational elongation and secretion.

Abstract
Dairy heifer growth and liveweight at first calving are regarded as important management variables affecting profitability and animal welfare. However, the appropriateness of heifer growth rate targets for different farming systems is not clear. Retrospective assessments of the association between heifer liveweight and subsequent productivity indicate significant benefits in milk production and, even, reproduction from increasing liveweight at breeding and first calving. However, prospective interventionist experiments do not concur, with very variable effects of liveweight at breeding on milk production and with only limited evidence of a positive effect of first-calving liveweight on first-lactation milk yield. In addition, any benefit in the first lactation is not evident in subsequent lactations in the limited number of long-term studies reported. Pre-weaning nutrition and average daily weight gain are areas of increasing interest, with lifelong increases in milk production resulting from accelerated growth rates during the first 8 weeks of life, indicating a possible significant return from a short-term investment. This could be one reason for the inconsistent effects of heifer liveweight at breeding and first lactation on milk production. Although the effect of pre-weaning average daily gain on heifer liveweight is short-lived, a recent meta-analysis indicated that pre-weaning average daily gain explains 22% of the variation in first-lactation milk production. Whether these differences in animal physiology have relevance in grazing systems, wherein heifers and cows do not consume sufficient nutrients to reach their potential, requires investigation. Despite considerable extension efforts over successive decades, current evidence indicates that failure to provide the new-born calf with sufficient high-quality colostrum is common. To understand the reasons for suboptimal colostrum feeding requires social research, with appropriate extension strategies developed to elicit practice change. Although there can be little doubt regarding the importance of heifer rearing to the profitability and sustainability of the farming business, the collective literature points to a failure of retrospective analyses in determining the cause of poor heifer performance. In reality, it is likely to be a combination of factors. The objective of this review is to investigate the effect of liveweight gain at various stages of the growth cycle of the heifer on the milk-production capacity of the lactating animal.
