Abstract
BioCholine Powder is a polyherbal feed additive composed of Achyrantes aspera, Trachyspermum ammi, Azadirachta indica, and Citrullus colocynthis. The objective of this study was to analyze published results that support the hypothesis that the polyherbal product BioCholine Powder has rumen bypass choline metabolites through a meta-analysis and effect size analysis (ES). Using Scopus, Web of Science, ScienceDirect, PubMed, and university dissertation databases, a systematic search was conducted for experiments published in scientific documents that evaluated the effects of BioCholine supplementation on the variables of interest. The analyzed data were extracted from twenty-one publications (fifteen scientific articles, three abstracts, and three graduate dissertations available in institutional libraries). The studies included lamb growing-finishing, lactating ewes and goats, calves, and dairy cows. The effects of BioCholine were analyzed using random effects statistical models to compare the weighted mean difference (WMD) between BioCholine-supplemented ruminants and controls (no BioCholine). Heterogeneity was explored, and three subgroup analyses were performed for doses [(4 (or 5 g/d), 8 (10 g/d)], supplementation in gestating and lactating ewes (pre- and postpartum supplementation), and blood metabolites by species and physiological state (lactating goats, calves, lambs, ewes). Supplementation with BioCholine in sheep increased the average daily lamb gain (p < 0.05), final body weight (p < 0.01), and daily milk yield (p < 0.05) without effects on intake or feed conversion. Milk yield was improved in small ruminants with BioCholine prepartum supplementation (p < 0.10). BioCholine supplementation decreased blood urea (p < 0.01) and increased levels of the liver enzymes alanine transaminase (ALT; p < 0.10) and albumin (p < 0.001). BioCholine doses over 8 g/d increased blood glucose, albumin (p < 0.10), cholesterol, total protein, and globulin (p < 0.05). The ES values of BioCholine in retained energy over the control in growing lambs were +7.15% NEm (p < 0.10) and +9.25% NEg (p < 0.10). In conclusion, adding BioCholine Powder to domestic ruminants' diets improves productive performance, blood metabolite indicators of protein metabolism, and liver health, showing its nutraceutical properties where phosphatidylcholine prevails as an alternative that can meet the choline requirements in ruminants.

Abstract
This study aimed to test possible metabolic differences between ewes and goats in response to an intravenous glucose infusion. Thirty-six animals, 18 mature Sarda dairy ewes and 18 mature Saanen goats (from 15 to 150 ± 11 d in milk [DIM], mean ± SD; body weight: 49.8 ± 6.8 kg for ewes, 60.6 ± 7.3 kg for goats) were compared simultaneously. In early lactation, both species received the same high-starch diet (HS: 20.4% starch, 35.4% neutral detergent fiber [NDF], on dry matter [DM] basis), whereas from 92 ± 11 DIM both species were randomly allocated to 2 dietary treatments: HS (20.0% starch, 36.7% NDF, on DM basis) and low-starch (LS: 7.8% starch, 48.8% NDF, on DM basis) diets. At 50 and 150 ± 11 DIM, ewes and goats were challenged with an intravenous glucose tolerance test and peripheral concentrations of glucose and insulin were determined 15 min before and 5, 10, 15, 30, 45, 90, and 180 min after glucose infusion. In early lactation, baseline plasma glucose and insulin concentrations tended to be higher in ewes than in goats (glucose: 55.8 vs. 42.9 ± 7.3 mg/dL; insulin: 0.13 vs. 0.05 ± 0.04 µg/L). After glucose infusion, glucose and insulin concentrations were higher in ewes than in goats (278.6 vs. 247.6 ± 13.1 mg/dL; 0.82 vs. 0.46 ± 0.12 µg/L). In mid-lactation, the dietary treatment (HS vs. LS) did not affect glucose and insulin metabolism. Baseline plasma glucose was numerically highest in ewes, while baseline insulin was higher in ewes than in goats (0.39 vs. 0.12 ± 0.099 µg/L). After glucose infusion, glucose concentration did not differ between ewes and goats, while insulin concentration was highest in ewes. Compared with goats, ewes showed in both periods a higher peak insulin, insulin increment, linear insulin area under the curve, insulin resistance index, and lower insulin sensitivity indices. In conclusion, despite the limitations associated with the use of intravenous glucose tolerance test to assess glucose regulation mechanisms, this study indicated large species differences in both early and mid-lactation and a more evident anabolic status in the ewes compared with the goats.

Abstract
Simple Summary Despite the fact that fat-tailed sheep raised for meat production are well known for being resilient to harsh environmental conditions such as pasture scarcity or low-quality feedstuffs, no studies regarding feed restriction have been performed on fat-tailed dairy sheep. In this study, prepartum feed restriction from week −5 to week −1 relative to parturition did not affect body weight. Similarly, postpartum feed restriction from week 1 to week 5 relative to parturition did not affect body weight. However, both prepartum and postpartum feed restrictions affected blood metabolites and hormones, which decreased both colostrum and milk yields postpartum. Abstract This study aimed to investigate the effect of prepartum and postpartum feed restriction on body weight (BW), blood metabolites, and hormones as well as colostrum and milk yields and compositions in fat-tailed dairy sheep. In this study, 20 multiparous and pregnant ewes were randomly allocated to either the control (Ctrl; n = 10) or the feed-restricted (FR; n = 10) groups from week −5 to week 5 relative to parturition. Despite dry matter intake being decreased in the FR group compared to the Ctrl throughout both prepartum and postpartum periods, no differences in BW were detected between groups in any of the studied periods. Feed restriction increased both free fatty acids and beta-hydroxybutyrate concentrations during both prepartum and postpartum periods. Similarly, feed restriction increased triglyceride concentration postpartum. Additionally, feed restriction increased insulin and growth hormone and decreased prolactin concentrations during both prepartum and postpartum periods. Feed restriction caused a decreased colostrum yield and a relative increase of the main colostrum components in the FR group. Similarly, milk yield decreased in the FR group compared to the Ctrl group, although milk components were not affected. In conclusion, feed restriction did not affect BW but decreased colostrum and milk yield in fat-tailed dairy sheep.

Abstract
Simple Summary In order to favor milk production, this research suggests that the concentration of starch in the diet of dairy ewes in mid-lactation should be reduced, compared to early lactation, by introducing sources of highly digestible fiber. On the other hand, this type of diet is not adequate for dairy goats, which should maintain the use diets rich in starch, even in mid-lactation, to support milk yield, as well. Abstract Evolution of milk production, body reserves and blood metabolites and their relationships with dietary carbohydrates were compared in 30 Sarda dairy ewes and 26 Saanen dairy goats in mid-lactation. From 92 to 152 ± 11 days in milk (DIM), each species was allocated to two dietary treatments: high-starch (HS: 20.0% starch, on DM basis) and low-starch (LS: 7.8% starch, on DM basis) diets. In mid-lactating goats, the HS diet increased fat-corrected milk yield (FCM (3.5%); 2.65 vs. 2.53 kg/d; p = 0.019) and daily milk net energy (NEL; p = 0.025), compared to the LS diet. The body condition score (BCS) was not affected. In mid-lactating ewes, the LS diet increased FCM (6.5%) (1.47 vs. 1.36 kg/d; p = 0.008), and NEL (p = 0.008), compared to the HS diet. In addition, BCS was greater in HS than in LS ewes (3.53 vs. 3.38; p = 0.008). Goats had a higher growth hormone (GH) and lower insulin concentration than ewes (GH: 2.62 vs. 1.37 ng/mL; p = 0.04; insulin: 0.14 vs. 0.38 µg/L; p < 0.001 in goats and ewes, respectively). In conclusion, in mid-lactation, the two species responded differently to dietary carbohydrates, probably due to differences in the concentration of GH and insulin. The HS diet favored milk yield in goats and body reserve accumulation in ewes. In ewes, the partial replacement of starch with highly digestible fiber increased energy partitioning in favor of milk production.
