Association of Stress and Musculoskeletal Pain With Poor Sleep: Cross-Sectional Study Among 3,600 Hospital Workers

The effects of a 12-week combined motor control exercise and isolated lumbar extension intervention on lumbar multifidus muscle stiffness in individuals with chronic low back pain

Introduction

Exercise therapy is the primary endorsed form of conservative treatment for chronic low back pain (LBP). However, there is still conflicting evidence on which exercise intervention is best. While motor control exercise can lead to morphological and functional improvements of lumbar multifidus muscle in individuals with chronic LBP, the effects of exercise prescription on multifidus stiffness assessed via shear wave elastography are still unknown. The primary aim of this study is to determine the effects of a combined motor control and isolated lumbar extension (MC + ILEX) intervention on lumbar multifidus muscle stiffness.

Methods

A total of 25 participants aged 18 to 65 were recruited from local orthopedic clinics and the university community with moderate to severe non-specific chronic LBP. Participants performed a 12-week MC + ILEX intervention program. Stiffness of the lumbar multifidus muscle (primary outcome) at L4 and L5 was obtained at baseline, 6-week, and 12-week using shear wave elastography. Changes in stiffness ratio (e.g., ratio of lumbar multifidus muscle stiffness from rest to contracted) were also assessed at both time points. Pre to post-intervention changes in lumbar multifidus muscle stiffness were assessed using a one-way repeated measure ANOVA.

Results

Following the 12-week intervention, there were no statistically significant changes in lumbar multifidus muscle stiffness at rest on the right side at L4 (p = 0.628) and the left side at L4 and L5 (p = 0.093, p = 0.203), but a statistically significant decrease was observed on the right side at L5 (p = 0.036). There was no change in lumbar multifidus muscle stiffness ratio.

Conclusion

This study provides preliminary evidence to suggest that a 12-week MC + ILEX intervention had minimal effect on lumbar multifidus muscle stiffness in individuals with chronic LBP. Further investigations are needed to confirm our findings and clarify the relationship between muscle stiffness and functional outcomes.

The association between musculoskeletal pain during pregnancy and pregnancy outcomes: A systematic review and meta-analyses

OBJECTIVE

To systematically investigate the association between musculoskeletal pain during pregnancy and birth outcomes including caesarean section, newborn birthweight, newborn birth length, and gestational age at birth.

METHODS

Medline, Embase, Web of Science, Cinahl and Scopus were systematically searched to identify eligible studies. Odds ratios, mean differences, and confidence intervals were used to describe results. Risk of Bias was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale for observational studies. GRADE (The Grading of Recommendation Assessment, Development, and Evaluation) was used to assess the quality of each outcome.

RESULTS

Seven studies were included with a total population of 85,991 participants. There is low- quality evidence that pregnant women with musculoskeletal pain had 1.59 greater odds to experience delivery by caesarean section compared to those without musculoskeletal pain ([OR] 1.59, 95 % confidence interval [CI] 1.09 to 2.31). Both newborn birth weight (Mean Difference [MD] 77.79 g, 95 % [CI] -23.09 to 178.67) and newborn birth length ([MD] 0.55 cm, 95 % [CI] -0.47 to 1.56) were not affected by musculoskeletal pain, with very low-quality and low-quality evidence, respectively. There was moderate evidence that pregnant women with musculoskeletal pain had shorter gestational age (weeks), although the effect was small and possibly not clinically relevant ([MD] -0.41, 95 % [CI] -0.41 to -0.07).

CONCLUSION

Pregnant women experiencing musculoskeletal pain are at greater odds of delivering their babies via caesarean than those without musculoskeletal pain, however, musculoskeletal pain during pregnancy does not appear to affect newborn birth weight, length, or gestational age at birth.

Yoga for musculoskeletal pain, discomfort, perceived stress, and quality of sleep in industry workers: a randomized controlled trial

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES

Work-related musculoskeletal pain and discomfort are due to repetitive, unnatural, continuous movements and postures. Yoga therapy is beneficial for pain and disability in occupational settings. The current study aims to investigate the effect of yoga on musculoskeletal pain, stress, and sleep quality among industry workers.

METHODOLOGY

The study was conducted as a parallel randomized controlled open-label trial. An allocation ratio of 1:1 was followed for randomization. A health survey was used to recruit 90 male workers in machinery manufacturing industries from Bengaluru. A specially designed yoga module was administered five days a week for eight weeks to yoga group. The waitlisted control group received lifestyle suggestions. Cornell Musculoskeletal Discomfort Questionnaire (CMDQ), Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) were administered at baseline, at the fourth week and eighth weeks. Repeated Measures Analysis of Variance (RM-ANOVA) was conducted to elicit the group*time interactions.

RESULTS

Ninety participants (Yoga = 45, Control = 45) with age 40.57 ± 6.85 were randomized. Significant interactions were found in CMDQ, VAS, PSS and PSQI scores. Further, between group comparison demonstrate significant difference between the groups at the end of 8 weeks for CMDQ, VAS and PSS scores.

CONCLUSIONS

Yoga can be used to reduce musculoskeletal pain, discomfort, perceived stress and improve sleep quality among industry workers.

Musculoskeletal Pain Among Eye Care Professionals

Purpose The purpose of this study is to investigate musculoskeletal pain among eye care professionals. Methods This cross-sectional study was conducted using an electronic detailed questionnaire through Google Forms. The structured questionnaire was distributed through various social media platforms targeting eye care professionals. The study included currently practicing ophthalmologists (Consultants, Specialists, Residents), optometrists, and orthoptists. Results A total of 514 eye care professionals participated in the study. The majority were younger than 30 years old (43.8%), with more than half being males (51.8%) and ophthalmologists (55.2%). The prevalence of eye care professionals who were suffering from musculoskeletal pain was 66.7%. The prevalence was significantly higher among females (76.2%) and those over 50 years old (71.4%). Sixty-eight point three percent (68.3%) of participants who don't do running exercises and 92.2% of those with comorbidities suffer from pain. The prevalence of pain among eye care professionals who every week examine more than 150 patients is 72.4%, perform more than 20 surgeries is 85.7%, and conduct more than 20 laser treatment sessions is 100%. Conclusion Musculoskeletal pain is highly prevalent among eye care professionals. This is especially true among females and older adults (>50 years). Among different exercises, running is most protective against musculoskeletal pain. Comorbidities contribute significantly to developing pain.

Factors associated with high physical exertion during healthcare work: Cross-sectional study among healthcare workers

BACKGROUND: High physical exertion during healthcare work is a documented risk factor for musculoskeletal pain, long term sickness absence and disability pension. Understanding the underlying factors of physical exertion is important to make the necessary preventive efforts in the working environment. OBJECTIVE: This study investigates factors associated with high physical exertion during healthcare work. METHODS: A total of 2047 Danish health care workers replied to a questionnaire about work and health. Associations (odds ratios; OR) of physical exertion (outcome variable) with the number of patients and self-reliant patients, frequency and type of assistive device use, BMI, leisure time activity, smoking, and age were modelled using mutually adjusted binary logistic regression. RESULTS: Factors associated with high physical exertion (OR and 95% CI) were high frequency of daily patient transfers 1.35 (1.23 – 1.48), less self-reliant patients 0.74 (0.62 – 0.89), less frequent use of necessary assistive devices 1.82 (1.50 – 2.21), as well as more frequent use of sliding pieces 1.23 (1.04 – 1.46), wheelchairs 1.23 (1.02 – 1.49), bed adjustments 0.88 (0.77 – 1.00) and intelligent beds 0.83 (0.71 – 0.95) during patient transfer. Age and lifestyle factors (BMI, smoking, and leisure time physical activity) were not associated with high physical exertion. CONCLUSIONS: The character of patient transfer specific healthcare work is associated with increased odds for high physical exertion whereas life-style factors are not. Thus, proper use of specific assistive devices and avoiding uneven distribution of difficult patients through appropriate planning may be protective strategies for lowering physical exertion during healthcare work.

Association of sleep disturbance with shift work, occupational stress, and musculoskeletal pain in Chinese public hospital emergency workers: A multicentre cross-sectional study

Poor sleep, which is reportedly prevalent among healthcare professionals, could lead to various detrimental consequences. This study aimed to investigate the sleep quality of individuals working in emergency departments of public hospitals in China and explore the potential factors influencing sleep disturbance. A self-administered questionnaire was completed by 7688 emergency workers from 147 public hospitals in Shandong, China. Log-binomial regression analysis was performed to explore the relationship of sleep disturbance with possible influencing factors, including individual and work characteristics, occupational stress, shift work, and musculoskeletal pain. The participants' mean Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index score was 9.6 ± 4.8, with 5341 (69.5%, 68.2-70.7%) of them experiencing sleep disturbance. The sleep quality was poorer in doctors (10.2 ± 5.1, 71.0%, 69.0-73.0%) than in nurses (9.2 ± 4.5, 68.6%, 67.0-70.1%), and poorer in those working in secondary (9.9 ± 4.5, 70.2%, 68.0-72.3%) and tertiary (12.2 ± 4.9, 77.5%, 75.3-79.7%) hospitals than in primary hospitals (8.0 ± 4.1, 64.6%, 62.6-66.6%). High prevalence of sleep disturbance was significantly associated with shift work, occupational stress, musculoskeletal pain, fewer breaks in a work shift, and less exercise during leisure time, after adjusting for confounding variables. Sleep disturbance occurred in emergency workers in the following order: two-shift rotation > three-shift rotation > permanent night shift > permanent day shift. Emergency workers in public hospitals in China had poor sleep quality and commonly experienced musculoskeletal pain. Urgent and comprehensive measures are needed to combat these issues.

Single-item measures of stress during work- and private time in healthcare workers

BACKGROUND

While the psychosocial work environment within the hospital sector is a topic of great debate, surveys assessing stress often do not differentiate between stress related to work- and private life. Identifying risk factors associated with these domains of daily life would help improve policies as well as target relevant treatment options. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate associations between stress during to work- and private time with Cohen's Perceived Stress Scale (CPSS).

METHODS

Perceived stress was assessed by the full version of CPSS (scores 0-40) as well as by two single-item questions related to stress related to work- and private life, respectively. Associations between these single-items and CPSS were modelled using general linear models controlling for lifestyle factors.

RESULTS

Overall, stress due to both work- and private time was strongly associated with CPSS scores. In the full population (n = 3,600), "never experiencing stress" during both work- and private time was associated with low stress scores (6.0, 95%CI 5.1-6.9). "Never experiencing" work-related stress but experiencing private time stress "very often" was associated with high stress scores (22.4, CI 19.8-25.1). Likewise, experiencing work-related stress "very often" but "never experiencing" private time stress was also associated with high stress scores (22.2, CI 20.3-24.2). Lastly, Spearman's r between the full CPSS and the two single-item questions about work- and private time stress were 0.62 (p < 0.0001) and 0.52 (p < 0.0001), respectively, while the two items were only weakly correlated (r = 0.32).

CONCLUSION

The present study shows that perceived stress due to both work and private time is strongly associated with Cohen's Perceived Stress Scale scores. The results illustrate the feasibility of using single-item questions related to work- and private time in identifying domain-specific risk factors for psychosocial stress.

The Use of Botulinum Toxin A as an Adjunctive Therapy in the Management of Chronic Musculoskeletal Pain: A Systematic Review with Meta-Analysis

Several studies have investigated the effect of botulinum toxin A (BoNT-A) for managing chronic musculoskeletal pain, bringing contrasting results to the forefront. Thus far, however, there has been no synthesis of evidence on the effect of BoNT-A as an adjunctive treatment within a multimodal approach. Hence, Medline via PubMed, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Library-CENTRAL were searched until November 2020 for randomised controlled trials (RCTs) that investigated the use of BoNT-A as an adjunctive therapy for chronic musculoskeletal pain. The risk of bias (RoB) and the overall quality of the studies were assessed through RoB 2.0 and the GRADE approach, respectively. Meta-analysis was conducted to analyse the pooled results of the six included RCTs. Four were at a low RoB, while two were at a high RoB. The meta-analysis showed that BoNT-A as an adjunctive therapy did not significantly decrease pain compared to the sole use of traditional treatment (SDM -0.89; 95% CI -1.91; 0.12; p = 0.08). Caution should be used when interpreting such results, since the studies displayed very high heterogeneity (I = 94%, p < 0.001). The overall certainty of the evidence was very low. The data retrieved from this systematic review do not support the use of BoNT-A as an adjunctive therapy in treating chronic musculoskeletal pain.

The Psychosocial Work Environment and Perceived Stress among Seniors with Physically Demanding Jobs: The SeniorWorkingLife Study

Background: Poor psychosocial work conditions are known to foster negative health consequences. While the existing literature on this topic focus mainly on white-collar workers, the influence of different aspects of the psychosocial work environment in physically demanding jobs remain understudied. Likewise, senior workers represent a population of the workforce at increased risk of adverse health outcomes and premature exit from the labour market. This study investigates the association between psychosocial work factors and perceived stress among the senior work force. Methods: Utilizing cross-sectional findings, this study reports associations between psychosocial factors (organizational justice, cooperation and collegial support, decision latitude, clarity of tasks, and quality of leadership) and the outcome of perceived stress quantified by Cohen’s Perceived Stress Scale (CPSS). Currently employed senior workers with physically demanding jobs were included in the analyses (n = 3386). Associations were modeled using general linear models with weights to make the estimates representative. Results: For all individually adjusted psychosocial variables, the category of “good” was consistently associated with lower stress scores compared to the categories of both “moderate” and “poor” (all p < 0.0001). Likewise, in the mutually adjusted analysis, the category of “good” was statistically different from “poor” for all included variables, while the category of “moderate” remained different from “poor” for “clarity of tasks”, “cooperation and collegial support”, and “decision latitude”. Conclusions: Among senior workers with physically demanding jobs, poor ratings of organizational factors related to the psychosocial work environment are consistently associated with high stress scores. Blue-collar occupations focusing primarily on physical risk factors are recommended to increase awareness on psychosocial aspects that may be relevant to the local work environment.

Psychosocial stress and musculoskeletal pain among senior workers from nine occupational groups: Cross-sectional findings from the SeniorWorkingLife study

INTRODUCTION

Maintaining good health with advancing age is increasingly important as most European countries experience an increase in retirement age. In order to decrease the risk of premature departure from the workforce, identifying groups at increased risk of musculoskeletal pain and psychosocial stress is essential in designing workplace policies. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between occupational groups differing in terms of physical demands and skill requirement, and the outcomes of stress and pain.

METHODS

This cross-sectional study reports associations of nine different occupational groups with stress and pain among 11 474 senior workers; stratified by occupational group and based on the International Standard Classification of Occupations (ISCO). A large-scale questionnaire survey was dispatched to Danish workers; drawn as a probability sample and merged with national registers. Representative estimates were produced using logistic regression controlling for various confounders, combined with model-assisted weights.

RESULTS

The prevalence of daily pain and high stress among occupational groups ranged between 20.0%-50.5% and 3.9%-10.0%, respectively. Compared with occupations characterised by being mostly sedentary (ISCO group 1-4), those with primarily physical demanding work (ISCO group 5-9) had higher odds of daily pain (OR 1.53, 95% CI 1.37 to 1.70) and a tendency towards higher stress scores (OR 1.20, 95% CI 0.98 to 1.46). Lastly, female workers experience increased odds of daily pain (OR 1.50, 95% CI 1.35 to 1.66) and high stress (OR 1.56, 95% CI 1.29 to 1.89) compared with male workers.

CONCLUSIONS

Occupational settings characterised by mainly physical work and low skill requirements are more likely to experience daily pain compared with those entailing mainly sedentary work. Likewise, in this sample of senior workers, women are more likely to experience pain and stress. These results highlights the need for improving occupation-specific and sex-specific guidelines in the prevention of musculoskeletal pain and psychological stress in workplaces.

Musculoskeletal Pain and Non-Classroom Teaching in Times of the COVID-19 Pandemic: Analysis of the Impact on Students from Two Spanish Universities

The lockdown, due to the coronavirus, has led to a change in lifestyle and physical activity in Spanish university students. The objective of this study was to analyze the prevalence of musculoskeletal pain and changes in physical activity and self-perceived stress in the student bodies of two Spanish Universities during the lockdown. A cross-sectional study was carried out in a sample of 1198 students (70.6% women). The main instruments used for measuring were the Standardized Kuorinka Modified Nordic Questionnaire and the Perceived stress scale (the questionnaire regarding the practice of physical activity). A reduction in the prevalence of musculoskeletal pain (p < 0.001) was identified in the sample of men and women, an increase (12.5%) in the frequency of carrying out physical activity from moderate to frequent, and the preference for strength training (15.1%), especially among women, was identified. All of this may be taken into account by health institutions when implementing measures to encourage physical activity in both suitable amounts and types, which improves the quality of life of the students.

Physical exposure during patient transfer and risk of back injury & low-back pain: prospective cohort study

BACKGROUND

Work-related musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) are common among healthcare workers. Because frequent patient transfer has been associated with increased risk of MSDs, we aim to quantify the physical load associated with commonly-used assistive devices and to investigate associations between accumulated physical exposure and risk of MSDs.

METHODS

By applying an exposure matrix based on objective measurements of electromyography and trunk flexion on a large (n = 1285) prospective cohort, intensity of low-back pain (LBP) and odds of back injury at 1-year follow-up were modelled using linear models and logistic regressions, respectively. The cohort was divided into groups according to physical exposure; i.e. low (1st quartile), moderate (2nd and 3rd quartiles) and high (4th quartile) exposure.

RESULTS

Exposure profiles are provided for 9 groups of assistive devices, with ceiling lifts and intelligent beds eliciting the lowest physical exposure. In the fully-adjusted model, we report differences in LBP intensity at follow-up between the low and moderate exposure groups (p = 0.0085). No difference was found between the moderate and high exposure groups (p = 0.2967). Likewise, we find no associations between physical exposure and odds of back injury at 1-year follow-up, with a prevalence of 11, 13 and 11% for the three groups, respectively.

CONCLUSIONS

Low physical exposure during patient transfer was prospectively associated with lower intensity of LBP. Consistent use of assistive devices associated with low physical exposure, namely ceiling-lifts and intelligent beds, may play a role in reducing the incidence of MSDs among healthcare workers.

Perceived Stress and Low-Back Pain Among Healthcare Workers: A Multi-Center Prospective Cohort Study

Objective: This study aimed to investigate the association between perceived stress and odds of low-back pain (LBP) in a population of Danish healthcare workers.

Methods: Utilizing a prospective cohort design with 1-year follow-up, a total of 1,944 healthcare workers from 389 departments at 19 hospitals responded to questionnaires containing items related to lifestyle, health, and working environment. Using Cohen's Perceived Stress Scale, associations between baseline stress levels and LBP intensity (0–10 scale) at follow-up were modeled using cumulative logistic regression, accounting for clustering at the department level and adjusting for age, sex, baseline intensity of LBP, education, seniority, number of daily patient transfers, psychosocial work environment, and lifestyle factors.

Results: For the entire population, moderate and high stress (reference: low stress) at baseline increased the odds of LBP at 1-year follow-up with odds ratios (ORs) of 1.39 (95% CI 1.13–1.71) and 1.99 (95% CI 1.49–2.66), respectively. Sensitivity analyses among female nurses showed similar results [i.e., OR 1.40 (95% CI 1.08–1.80) and OR 2.08 (95% CI 1.44–3.00) for moderate and high stress, respectively], while only high stress significantly increased the odds among those without LBP at baseline.

Conclusions: Psychological stress increases the odds of LBP among healthcare workers. Identifying and diminishing work-related psychosocial stressors should be included in strategies that aim to prevent musculoskeletal disorders in this population.

Work- and stress-related musculoskeletal and sleep disorders among health professionals: a cross-sectional study in a hospital setting in Switzerland

Background

Musculoskeletal and sleep disorders have been reported to be very common among health care and hospital workers and particularly nurses. They are assumed or found to be a result of psychological stress and/or physical strain or pain. However, no other study so far – at least in a hospital setting and for Switzerland – has considered and investigated musculoskeletal as well as sleep disorders in consequence of or rather in association with both physical workload and psychological stress.

Methods

Cross-sectional survey data of 1232 health professionals were used and analysed. Data were collected in 2015/16 among the health care workforces of three public hospitals and two rehabilitation clinics in the German-speaking part of Switzerland. Musculoskeletal and sleep disorders were assessed by three items taken from the Swiss Health Survey, a 2-item measure of accumulated low back, back, neck and shoulder pain and a single-item measure of problems in getting to sleep or sleeping through. Stratified and adjusted bivariate logistic and multivariate linear regression analyses were performed to calculate measures of association (adjusted odds ratios, z-standardized beta coefficients), to control for potential confounders, and to compare different health professions (nurses, physicians, therapists, other).

Results

Almost every fourth of the studied health professionals reported severe or even very severe musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) and nearly every seventh severe sleep disorders (SDs). These prevalence rates were significantly or at least slightly higher among nurses than among physicians and other health care workers. General stress, work stress, physical effort at work, and particularly a painful or tiring posture at work were found to be clear and strong risk factors for MSDs, whereas only general and work-related stress were found to be significantly associated with SDs. There was no or only weak association between MSDs and SDs.

Conclusions

This study found MSDs to be largely a result of physical workload or rather poor posture at work and only secondarily a consequence of (general) stress, whereas SDs were revealed to be primarily a consequence of stress on and particularly off the job. Preventive strategies therefore have to differentiate and combine measures for the reduction of both psychological stress and physical strain.

Poor Sleep Is a Risk Factor for Low-Back Pain among Healthcare Workers: Prospective Cohort Study

This study aimed to investigate the association between poor sleep and risk of low-back pain (LBP) in healthcare workers. Using a prospective cohort design with 1-year follow-up, a total of 1955 healthcare workers (60% nurses) from 389 departments at 19 hospitals responded to questionnaires containing items related to lifestyle, health, and working environment. Associations between sleep scores (0-100) at baseline and LBP intensity (0-10) at follow-up were modelled using cumulative logistic regression accounting for clustering at the department level and adjusted for lifestyle and psychosocial confounders. In the full population of healthcare workers, 43.9% and 24.4% experienced moderate and poor sleep, respectively. In the fully adjusted model with good sleep as reference, moderate, and poor sleep increased the risk of LBP at follow-up, with odds ratios (OR's) of 1.66 (95% confidence interval (CI) 1.35-2.04) and 2.05 (95% CI 1.57-2.69), respectively. Three sensitivity analyses including healthcare workers free from LBP, nurses, and nurses free from LBP at baseline, respectively, yielded similar results. In conclusion, poor sleep constitutes a potent risk factor for LBP among healthcare workers. The presented results provide strong incentives to evaluate and weigh current prevention policies against an updated biopsychosocial framework.

Insomnia in Patients Seeking Care at an Orofacial Pain Unit

Introduction: Orofacial pain and dysfunction include a broad range of disturbances among which pain and insomnia are some of the most common complaints. Sleep strengthens physiological and psychological resilience and is an absolute requirement for health. Insomnia is a common symptom or sleep disorder, yet data on its prevalence is sparse. Here we extracted data from the insomnia severity index which was part of the web-based interdisciplinary symptom evaluation (WISE) tool given to a large sample of patients seeking care at an orofacial pain unit for analyzing insomnia prevalence in this clinical population.

Material and methods: Anonymized data were available from 952 patients who consulted the Orofacial Pain Unit at the Center of Dental Medicine, University of Zurich, Zurich, Switzerland between January 2017 and December 2018. Prevalence data for insomnia stratified by gender and 10 age groups (decades) were calculated. The distribution of four insomnia severity grades was determined, also stratified by age and gender.

Results: 952 patients (290 men: 30.5%) with a mean age of 44.8 ± 17.4 years completed a WISE. Three hundred and fifty-two (37.0%) patients with a mean age of 45.8 ± 16.7 years positively responded to a screening question for insomnia and/or hypersomnia. Insomnia was severe in women from the 2nd to 8th decade, ranging from 4.3% (3rd decade) to 14.5% (6th decade), and moderately severe from the 2nd to 9th decade, ranging from 18.8% (6th decade) to 27.8% (2nd decade). In men, severe insomnia was present from the 3rd to 7th decade, ranging from 2.3% (7th decade) to 4.4% (4th decade) and moderately severe insomnia from the 3rd to 7th decade, ranging from 4.6% (7th decade) to 12.2% (5th decade).

Conclusions: This is the first study reporting on insomnia in a large sample of patients seeking care at an orofacial pain unit. One in three patients reported some form of sleep disturbances, which for almost half of them was moderate to severe insomnia. The gender ratio was almost equal throughout adulthood, yet younger and older women were more frequently affected and experienced higher insomnia severity than men.
