Exploring the Relationship Between Hospital Service Quality, Patient Trust, and Loyalty From a Service Encounter Perspective in Elderly With Chronic Diseases

Perceptions, Attitudes, Beliefs, and Practices Toward Traditional Chinese Medicine Therapies for Herpes Zoster: A Cross-Sectional Study of Healthcare Professionals

Introduction

Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) holds great potential in promoting healing and relieving pain for herpes zoster (HZ) treatments. Evidence showed that both healthcare professionals' (HCPs) belief and knowledge influence their attitudes, which result in their expression and direct behavior. However, little is known in this area regarding TCM treatments for HZ. This study aimed to understand the HCPs' perceptions, attitudes, beliefs, and practices toward TCM and its services for HZ.

Methods

During July 2021 and October 2022, a cross-sectional study of HCPs querying demographics, perceptions, attitudes, beliefs, and practices toward TCM and TCM services for HZ was conducted. The frequency and percentage or mean and standard deviation were used to present categorical data and continuous data, respectively. A Chi-square analysis compared nurses' and doctors' views on TCM treatments for HZ.

Results

Out of 306 eligible respondents, 66.0% used TCM content in clinical practice less than 40% of the time. Respondents reported that there were three main advantages of TCM for HZ, including better crusting and healing, fewer side effects, and mitigating complications. A total of 41.3% (81/196) of the respondents who had cared for/treated HZ patients applied TCM treatments. The three factors most associated with referrals/providing TCM to patients were postherpetic neuralgia, early erythema or papules, and acute pain. Compared to nurses, doctors showed more endorsement of the efficacy and cost-effectiveness of TCM treatments for HZ patients.

Conclusion

The study found that most healthcare professionals in HZ had a favorable view of TCM, but lacked practical experience administering it to patients. Programs should be developed to provide evidence-based TCM treatments and encourage combining TCM with Western medicine for better patient care.

'Hearing silences': Exploring culturally safe transitional care: A qualitative study among Turkish-speaking migrant frail older adults

AIMS

This study aimed to investigate the experiences and transitional care needs of Turkish frail older adults living in the UK and determine how this information can be utilized to improve the provision of culturally sensitive care during the transitional period.

DESIGN

Qualitative descriptive research with semi-structured individual interviews.

METHODS

"The 'Silences' Framework guided the research design, from conceptualizing the research question to structuring the report of final outputs. For this study, semi-structured, in-depth interviews were conducted with sixteen older adults living with frailty and five family caregivers between January and May of 2023 in the United Kingdom.

RESULTS

Major themes that were identified included: (i) information and communication, (ii) care and support, (iii) the role of culture and (iv) trust and satisfaction. Further analysis, through discussion and immersion in the data, revealed that care transition periods were presented alongside three phases of transitional care: pre-transition (during hospitalization), early-transition (the period between discharge and the 7th day after discharge) and late transition (the period between the 8th day and 12th month after discharge).

CONCLUSIONS

Our study revealed that the communication and informational needs of frail older individuals change during the transition period. While Turkish older adults and family caregivers expressed satisfaction with healthcare services in the UK, many struggled due to a lack of knowledge on how to access them.

IMPACT

The support of family caregivers is a crucial component in facilitating transitional care for frail older patients, as they help in accessing healthcare services and using technological devices or platforms. It should be noted that family caregivers often hold the same level of authority as their elderly Turkish counterparts.

The mediating effect of patient trust on the relationship between service quality and patient satisfaction

PURPOSE

The prime aim of this research is to examine the mediating effect of patient trust on the relationship between service quality and patient satisfaction in Amman, Jordan.

DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH

A convenience sample of patients visiting seven out of the 44 private hospitals in Amman was selected. In total, 385 questionnaires were distributed among patients, with a response rate of 91%. Of these, 35 were disregarded, and the data from the remaining 350 questionnaires were analyzed using SPSS.

FINDINGS

The results showed that service quality has a statistically significant effect on patient satisfaction. Furthermore, service quality has a statistically significant effect on patient trust, while there is also a statistically significant effect of patient trust on patient satisfaction. The findings also revealed that patient satisfaction partially mediates the relationship between service quality and patient satisfaction.

ORIGINALITY/VALUE

Generating more insights in the areas of service quality, patient trust and patient satisfaction while also extending the findings of earlier studies. The prior studies in the literature that focus on customers are given a more advantageous perspective by using Jordanian hospitals as a population to test the model of this research. The majority of past research on service quality, patient satisfaction and patient trust in the healthcare sector has been conducted in western nations.

Analysis of the factors influencing the effectiveness of local government's purchase of older adults care services - a grounded theory study based on typical cases

Background

Population aging is a basic national condition in China at present and for a long time to come, forcing the country to accelerate the pace of building its public older adults care system. The government's purchase of older adults care services has become an effective way to make up for the lack of the family's older adults care function, to which the Chinese government attaches particular importance. The article selects 11 typical cases from the excellent case base released by the Chinese Ministry of Civil Affairs officials in 2022 to study the influencing factors of the effect of local government purchase of older adults care service supply.

Methods

NVivo data analysis tools have significant advantages in retrieving, analyzing and coding data more efficiently and accurately, which helps to construct theoretical propositions and formulate hypotheses to be tested in qualitative research. The study intends to adopt the grounded theory approach to analyze the text with the help of NVivo12 software, to condense the practice mechanism of local governments' purchasing of older adults care services and to construct a relational model.

Results

Taking "the supply effect of local government purchasing older adults services" as the main logic line, the article summarizes the four main influencing factors of the supply effect of government purchasing older adults services: the real demand of the society, the government's power and responsibility system, the government's governance ability, and the society's acceptance ability.

Conclusion

The sense of gain, happiness and security of the older adults group is the starting point and landing point of the older adults service policy formulation and implementation. Policy guidance and decision-making have an important impact on the quality of the supply of older adults care services and the development of the older adults care services industry. Clarifying the direction of policy guidance, reflecting the comprehensive efficiency of government governance and utilizing the professional advantages of social forces, is the key to improving the effectiveness of the government's purchase of older adults care services.

The impact of COVID-19 on the doctor-patient relationship in China

A strong doctor-patient relationship (DPR) is crucial to the effectiveness of treatment. It is imperative to maintain a good DPR during treatment. During 2019, Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) brought new challenges to already difficult doctor-patient relationships. This paper summarized the current state of the DPR, compared the changes between China and other countries after the outbreak of COVID-19, and listed the solutions proposed by various countries. Finally, the author suggested some solutions in order to improve the DPR according to China's own circumstances.

Can online health information sources really improve patient satisfaction?

Internet information has become the main way for individuals to obtain health information. The purpose of this paper is to explore the role online information sources play in health decision-making. Specifically, we investigated the relationship between online information sources and patient satisfaction, as well as their moderating effects as compared to those of other information sources. Using logistical regression analysis, we conducted the longitudinal data on 54,027 doctors and 952,877 online doctor reviews from 3,525 hospitals in 31 provinces to test a proposed research model. The results showed that patient satisfaction was generally lower for individuals who found a doctor through online information sources. Therefore, we suggest that patients consider the doctor quality, the doctor popularity, and patient involvement. In addition, we found that the doctor popularity had a negative moderating effect between online information sources and patient satisfaction, while patient involvement had a positive moderating effect between online information sources and patient satisfaction. The study provides strategic guidance and practical implications for policies, online healthcare community managers, and patients.
