COVID-19 vaccination roll-outs in eleven small countries within the WHO European region; Lessons learned

'We're at war.' Healthcare workers' experience with organisational change, uncertainty and vaccine hesitancy in 2021 and 2022 during the COVID-19 vaccination programe in Poland

This article analyses the organisation of the mass COVID-19 vaccination programme in Poland and its consequences for various aspects of the social identity of healthcare workers (HCWs). Based on 31 in-depth interviews with HCWs, our study reveals the following: (1) Certain elements of the programme (inclusion of other healthcare professionals like pharmacists and laboratory diagnosticians as vaccinators) and the provision of additional infrastructure (pharmacies and shopping malls) may prompt scepticism and criticism in physicians and nurses who feel challenged about their professional autonomy and hierarchies; (2) Given the high levels of professional uncertainty, the implementation of the COVID-19 vaccination is forcing HCWs to revise their attitude to medical standards, resulting in specific responses and adaptation strategies (ranging from the active involvement in the programme due to the sense of mission, to more or less evident scepticism); and (3) Confronting vaccine hesitancy, both among patients and other HCWs, contributes to the feeling of helplessness, leading to criticism of policymakers.

How to increase COVID-19 vaccination among a population with persistently suboptimal vaccine uptake? Evidence from the North Macedonia mobile vaccination and public health advice caravan

Over three years since the first COVID-19 vaccine was approved, many countries still have suboptimal vaccination rates despite holding great amounts of vaccines. Overall, there is little evidence on which policies are more effective to encourage vaccination, particularly in countries where a large share of the population remains unvaccinated. In this study, we examine the effectiveness of a community-based intervention carried out in March 2022 in North Macedonia, a country with a large and persistent share of the population that remains unvaccinated. The intervention, spearheaded by the Ministry of Health and supported by the World Health Organization and UNICEF, consisted of a mobile caravan offering vaccination and public health advice to different locations across the country on different days. Results from our staggered difference-in-difference model show that the mobile vaccination caravan increased daily vaccination rates by 7.7 vaccines per 100,000 inhabitants during the three weeks after the day of the caravan visit. This corresponds to a 35 % increase with respect to pre-intervention vaccination rates. We estimate a cost-effectiveness of 25.4 US dollars (USD) per additional vaccination induced. These results point to mobile caravan vaccines as an effective and cost-effective strategy to increase COVID-19 vaccination rates, even in a context of persistently suboptimal uptake.

COVID-19 vaccination in the mass vaccination center: clinical practice and effectiveness analysis

Objectives

Mass vaccination campaigns can rapidly increase the vaccination rate for the COVID-19 vaccine, the establishment of mass vaccination centers is indispensable. At the beginning of March 2021, China began to carry out COVID-19 vaccination activities nationwide. Here, we aimed to evaluate the criteria established by mass vaccination centers, COVID-19 vaccination experience, the incidence of adverse events following immunization and opinions.

Methods

We describe the layout and functioning of Nan'an District mass vaccination center, the working mechanism, experience and effectiveness. Distribution of COVID-19 vaccine vaccination and adverse events following immunization reported in the mass vaccination center of Nan'an District were evaluated.

Results

From March 26, 2021 to April 28, 2022, the mass vaccination center has inoculated about 381,364 doses of COVID-19 vaccine to the population. The study found that the incidence of adverse events following immunization (AEFI) was very low (1.04/100000). The chances of having AEFI were significantly higher in COVID-19 vaccine (CHO cell) than COVID-19 vaccine (Vero cell).

Conclusion

The mass vaccination center was running successfully. It was effective and safe, providing vaccination services and increasing COVID-19 vaccination rates among the population. The experience of the mass vaccination center for COVID-19 in China can provide a reference for other countries and regions to carry out COVID-19 vaccination.
