Enhancing Overhead Throwing Ball Velocity After Core Muscle Training in Athletes: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials

OBJECTIVE

This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the influence of core muscle training on throwing ball velocity among overhead throwing athletes.

DESIGN

A literature search was performed from inception to July 2023 for randomized controlled trials investigating the effects of core muscle training on overhead throwing ball velocity. The primary outcome was the change in standing throwing ball velocity. The secondary outcome focused on the enhancement of step/jump throwing ball velocity.

RESULTS

Ten randomized controlled trials were included, revealing a significant improvement in standing throwing ball velocity in the group undergoing core muscle training (Hedges' g = 0.701, 95% confidence interval = 0.339 to 1.063, P < 0.001). Longer treatment duration and a higher frequency of core muscle training sessions per week contributed to improved standing throwing ball velocity. However, core muscle training did not show significant benefits for step (Hedge's g = 0.463, 95% confidence interval = -0.058 to 0.985, P = 0.082) and jump throwing ball velocity (Hedges' g = 0.550, 95% confidence interval = -0.051 to 1.152, P = 0.073).

CONCLUSIONS

Core muscle training significantly enhanced standing ball throwing velocity. However, its effect on step/jump throwing ball velocity was less certain. Further research is needed to explore the impact of core muscle training (especially its long-term effects) on throwing ball velocity.

Effects of neuromuscular training on dynamic balance ability in athletes: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Objectives

This study aimed to quantitatively analyze the effects of neuromuscular training (NMT) on dynamic balance in healthy athletes through a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.

Methods

Searches on six databases for randomized controlled trials examining the impact of NMT on athletes' balance ability. The search period extended from the inception of the database to March 16, 2024, languages are limited to Chinese and English. Review Manager 5.1 was used for literature quality assessment and data analysis. Stata 15.0 software was used for assessing publication bias, employing the clipping method, and conducting sensitivity analysis. The Grading of recommendations assessment development and evaluation (GRADE) was used to assess the certainty of evidence. Effect size (ES) was used to evaluate the impact effect of the results.

Results

(1) Meta-analysis: A total of 7 papers met the inclusion criteria, and the meta-analysis indicated that NMT had a positive impact on the dynamic balance ability of the right (SMD = 0.74) and left (SMD = 0.70) lower limb of athletes, and a statistically significant difference was observed (p < 0.01). Subgroup analysis revealed that NMT did not have a positive effect (p > 0.05) on the right anterior (SMD = 0.35); However, it had a positive effect (p < 0.05) on the right posteromedial (SMD = 1.22), right posterolateral (SMD = 0.82), right composite score (SMD = 0.79), left anterior (SMD = 0.38), left posteromedial (SMD = 1.19), left posterolateral (SMD = 0.57) and left composite score (SMD = 0.86). (2) Reporting bias: Funnel plot indicated evidence of publication bias, but there was no significant asymmetry in the funnel plot after trimming and filling. The results were not reversed, indicating the robustness of the combined results. (3) Sensitivity analysis: The results of the sensitivity analysis suggest that the data in this meta-analysis are relatively stable and credible. (4) Grading the evidence: Based on GRADE scale the certainty of evidence from the included studies was determined to be moderate.

Conclusion

Neuromuscular training can enhance the dynamic balance ability of athletes on both the left and right sides. Therefore, neuromuscular training is an effective method for enhancing the unilateral dynamic balance ability of athletes.

The effect of core stability training on ball-kicking velocity, sprint speed, and agility in adolescent male football players

This study was conducted to investigate the effect of core stability training program on ball-kicking velocity, running speed, and agility in adolescent male football players. To this end, 36 male football players aged 12-14 were divided into the training group and control group. Before implementing the core stability training program, participants' ball-kicking velocity, sprint speed, and agility performance were measured with a Bushnell velocity radar gun, 20 m sprint test, and 505 agility test, respectively, in both training group and control group. After the measurements, the training group followed core stability training program three days a week, for eight weeks in addition to the routine training program, while the control group followed the routine training program only. Ball-kicking velocity, sprint speed, and agility performance were re-measured in both groups after the completion of the core stability training program. Significant improvements were detected in all parameters, i.e., ball-kicking velocity, sprint speed, and agility performance in the training group (p<0.05). On the other hand, in the control group, no significant change was detected in the ball-kicking velocity and sprint speed (p>0.05), whereas a significant improvement was observed in agility performance (p<0.05). Inter-group comparisons revealed statistically significant differences between the groups in ball-kicking velocity and sprint speed in favor of the training group (p<0.05), while no significant difference was found between the groups in agility performance (p>0.05). In conclusion, this study's findings suggest that core stability exercises can be incorporated into the routine training program of adolescent male football players.

Influence of trunk rotator strength on rotational medicine ball throwing performance

BACKGROUND

The strength of the trunk musculature plays an essential role in performance. The aims of this study were to analyze the relationship between the strength of the trunk rotation muscles with rotational medicine ball throwing velocity and distance, to study differences between sex in rotational medicine ball throwing and to compare the asymmetries of trunk rotational strength and rotational medicine ball throwing.

METHODS

Thirty physically active college students participated on the study. Horizontal and low cable woodchop exercises were assessed with a functional electromechanical dynamometer and throwing was measured with a radar and a measuring tape. A Pearson's correlation coefficient was calculated for the relation between trunk rotational strength and rotational medicine ball throwing. Independent samples t-test was performed to determine the differences between sex in rotational medicine ball throwing and a paired samples t-test was performed to study the asymmetries.

RESULTS

Large and very large correlations were obtained between trunk rotational strength and rotational medicine ball throwing (r=0.68-0.79). Significant differences and a large effect size were found between males and females for all throwing velocity and throwing distance variables (P<0.05; ES>0.90) and asymmetries in performance of mean velocity throwing (P=0.003; ES=-0.60) and peak velocity throwing (P=0.025; ES=-0.43). No significant differences were found between dominant and non-dominant side in any of the trunk rotator strength assessment conditions (P>0.05).

CONCLUSIONS

There is a large or very large correlation between the STRM and the RMBT in all its modalities. Differences in strength were found between sexes, with no significant differences between dominant and non-dominant sides.
