Perovskites in the Energy Grid and CO2 Conversion: Current Context and Future Directions

Exploring the stability and catalytic activity of monoethanolamine functionalized CuO electrode in electrochemical CO2 reduction

Electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction reactions (eCO2RR) have emerged as promising strategies for both mitigating CO2 emissions and converting them into valuable products. Despite the promise, challenges such as stability, efficiency, and availability of CO2 on the electrode surface, especially at high current densities, still need to be overcome. Herein, this study explores the precipitation of CuO nanoparticles with monoethanolamine to preserve nitrogen groups on the surface of the material. These groups can act by adsorbing the CO2 and stabilizing its catalytic performance during the electroreduction procedure. The incorporation of monoethanolamine as functionalization on the surface of the CuO catalyst was confirmed by XPS measurements. Electrodes utilizing the S-MEA catalyst demonstrated enhanced electrochemical activity, achieving a current density of -187 mA cm-2 at a half-cell potential of -1.2 V versus RHE. Furthermore, long-term stability tests confirmed consistent activity for at least 100 hours in both flow cell and zero gap cell configurations. These results indicate that electrodes featuring the S-MEA catalyst display notably superior electrochemical activity and stability compared with the non-functionalized CuO (S-KOH) and commercial CuO nanopowder (c-CuO). The S-MEA enhancement is attributed to the introduction of amine functional groups that serve as CO2 adducts, facilitating CO2 adsorption and fostering electrode activation. It was evidenced by higher current densities and improved structural integrity during prolonged tests. The insights gained from the comparative performance of these electrodes provide valuable directions for future research in developing more robust and efficient catalysts for environmental remediation technologies.

All-inorganic lead halide perovskites for photocatalysis: a review

Nowadays, environmental pollution and the energy crisis are two significant concerns in the world, and photocatalysis is seen as a key solution to these issues. All-inorganic lead halide perovskites have been extensively utilized in photocatalysis and have become one of the most promising materials in recent years. The superior performance of all-inorganic lead halide perovskites distinguish them from other photocatalysts. Since pure lead halide perovskites typically have shortcomings, such as low stability, poor active sites, and ineffective carrier extraction, that restrict their use in photocatalytic reactions, it is crucial to enhance their photocatalytic activity and stability. Huge progress has been made to deal with these critical issues to enhance the effects of all-inorganic lead halide perovskites as efficient photocatalysts in a wide range of applications. In this manuscript, the synthesis methods of all-inorganic lead halide perovskites are discussed, and promising strategies are proposed for superior photocatalytic performance. Moreover, the research progress of photocatalysis applications are summarized; finally, the issues of all-inorganic lead halide perovskite photocatalytic materials at the current state and future research directions are also analyzed and discussed. We hope that this manuscript will provide novel insights to researchers to further promote the research on photocatalysis based on all-inorganic lead halide perovskites.

Recent advances in perovskite-based Z-scheme and S-scheme heterojunctions for photocatalytic CO2 reduction

The dramatic rise in carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere caused by the continuous use of carbon fuels continues to have a significant impact on environmental degradation and the disappearance of energy reserves. Past few years have seen a significant increase in the interest in photocatalytic carbon dioxide reduction because of its ability to lower CO2 releases from the burning of fossil fuels while also producing fuels and important chemical products. Because of their excellent catalytic efficiency, great uniformity, lengthy charge diffusion layers and texture flexibility that enable accurate band gap and band line optimization, perovskite-based nanomaterials are perhaps the most advantageous among the numerous semiconductors proficient in accelerating CO2 conversion under visible light. Firstly, a brief insight into photocatalytic CO2 conversion mechanism and structural features of perovskites are discussed. Further the classification and selection of perovskites for Z and S-scheme heterojunctions and their role in photocatalytic CO2 reduction analysed. The efficient modification and engineering of heterojunctions via co-catalyst loading, morphology control and vacancy introduction have been comprehensively reviewed. Third, the state-of-the-art achievements of perovskite-based Z-scheme and S-scheme heterojunctions are systematically summarized and discussed. Finally, the challenges, bottlenecks and future perspectives are discussed to provide a pathway for applying perovskite-based heterojunctions for solar-to-chemical energy conversion.

High-Entropy Perovskite Thin Film in the Gd-Nd-Sm-La-Y-Co System: Deposition, Structure and Optoelectronic Properties

Multicomponent equimolar perovskite oxides (ME-POs) have recently emerged as a highly promising class of materials with unique synergistic effects, making them well-suited for applications in such areas as photovoltaics and micro- and nanoelectronics. High-entropy perovskite oxide thin film in the (Gd_0.2Nd_0.2La_0.2Sm_0.2Y_0.2)CoO₃ (RECO, where RE = Gd_0.2Nd_0.2La_0.2Sm_0.2Y_0.2, C = Co, and O = O₃) system was synthesized via pulsed laser deposition. The crystalline growth in an amorphous fused quartz substrate and single-phase composition of the synthesized film was confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Surface conductivity and activation energy were determined using a novel technique implementing atomic force microscopy (AFM) in combination with current mapping. The optoelectronic properties of the deposited RECO thin film were characterized using UV/VIS spectroscopy. The energy gap and nature of optical transitions were calculated using the Inverse Logarithmic Derivative (ILD) and four-point resistance method, suggesting direct allowed transitions with altered dispersions. The narrow energy gap of RECO, along with its relatively high absorption properties in the visible spectrum, positions it as a promising candidate for further exploration in the domains of low-energy infrared optics and electrocatalysis.

Emerging natural and tailored perovskite-type mixed oxides–based catalysts for CO2 conversions

The rapid economic and societal development have led to unprecedented energy demand and consumption resulting in the harmful emission of pollutants. Hence, the conversion of greenhouse gases into valuable chemicals and fuels has become an urgent challenge for the scientific community. In recent decades, perovskite-type mixed oxide-based catalysts have attracted significant attention as efficient CO2 conversion catalysts due to the characteristics of both reversible oxygen storage capacity and stable structure compared to traditional oxide-supported catalysts. In this review, we hand over a comprehensive overview of the research for CO2 conversion by these emerging perovskite-type mixed oxide-based catalysts. Three main CO2 conversions, namely reverse water gas shift reaction, CO2 methanation, and CO2 reforming of methane have been introduced over perovskite-type mixed oxide-based catalysts and their reaction mechanisms. Different approaches for promoting activity and resisting carbon deposition have also been discussed, involving increased oxygen vacancies, enhanced dispersion of active metal, and fine-tuning strong metal-support interactions. Finally, the current challenges are mooted, and we have proposed future research prospects in this field to inspire more sensational breakthroughs in the material and environment fields.

Post-Functionalization of Bromo-Substituted Ether-Linked Polymers via Ullman Coupling Reaction: Synthesis, Characterization and Their Role toward Carbon Dioxide Capture

A new open-chain ether-linked polymer has been prepared via nucleophilic aromatic substitution reaction on a C-F bond of 1,4-dibromo-2,5-difluorobenzene by using 2,2-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl) hexafluoropropane (bisphenol AF or BAF). The new polymer (PE-AF) has shown a good solubility in non-polar solvents, good thermal stability (up to 300 °C) and random surface morphology. Tailoring these properties has been achieved by utilizing the post-modification synthetic methodology on the bromo-sites of the polymer backbone via the application of an Ullmann coupling reaction with aniline to form the polymer (PE-Sec-NHPh). The successful synthesis of the polymers has been confirmed by elemental analysis, infrared spectroscopy (IR), 1H- and 13C-NMR and 13C CP-MAS solid state. Upon incorporation of the aniline linker, the nitrogen content increased when compared with the parent polymer chain, and thus PE-Sec-NHPh revealed a higher thermal stability up to 350 °C and a more uniformly aggregated morphology (spherical particles ca. 0.3–0.1 µm). A further evaluation has been conducted on the polymers by measuring their surface tendency toward carbon dioxide capture. Interestingly, despite their non-porous nature, the polymers demonstrated a reasonable amount of gas capture that reached 90.0 and 41.0 mg/g for PE-Sec-NHPh and PE-AF, respectively. Furthermore, the calculated CO2 binding affinities of the polymers are consistent with data reported previously in the literature.

Editorial—Special Issue “Catalysis for Energy Production”

The rapid increase in anthropogenic greenhouse gas concentrations in the last several decades means that the effects of climate change are fast becoming the familiar horsemen of a planetary apocalypse. Catalysis, one of the pillars of the chemical and petrochemical industries, will play a critical role in the effort to reduce the flow of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. This Special Issue is timely, as it provides a collection of high-quality manuscripts in a diverse range of topics, which include the production of green hydrogen via water electrolysis, the steam reforming of ethanol, propane or glycerol, the dry reforming of methane, and the autothermal reforming of diesel surrogate fuel. The topic of the transformation of biomass waste to chemicals is also well represented as is the tackling of CO2 emissions via novel utilization technologies. The Editors are grateful to all authors for their valuable contributions and confident that this Special Issue will prove valuable to scholars, university professors and students alike.

Recent Developments in Lead and Lead-Free Halide Perovskite Nanostructures towards Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction

Perovskite materials have been widely considered as emerging photocatalysts for CO2 reduction due to their extraordinary physicochemical and optical properties. Perovskites offer a wide range of benefits compared to conventional semiconductors, including tunable bandgap, high surface energy, high charge carrier lifetime, and flexible crystal structure, making them ideal for high-performance photocatalytic CO2 reduction. Notably, defect-induced perovskites, for example, crystallographic defects in perovskites, have given excellent opportunities to tune perovskites' catalytic properties. Recently, lead (Pb) halide perovskite and their composites or heterojunction with other semiconductors, metal nanoparticles (NPs), metal complexes, graphene, and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been well established for CO2 conversion. Besides, various halide perovskites have come under focus to avoid the toxicity of lead-based materials. Therefore, we reviewed the recent progress made by Pb and Pb-free halide perovskites in photo-assisted CO2 reduction into useful chemicals. We also discussed the importance of various factors like change in solvent, structure defects, and compositions in the fabrication of halide perovskites to efficiently convert CO2 into value-added products.

Morphology, Activation, and Metal Substitution Effects of AlPO4-5 for CO2 Pressure Swing Adsorption

Aluminophosphate, AlPO₄-5, an AFI zeotype framework consisting of one-dimensional parallel micropores, and metal-substituted AlPO₄-5 were prepared and studied for CO₂ adsorption. Preparation of AlPO₄-5 by using different activation methods (calcination and pyrolysis), incorporation of different metals/ions (Fe, Mg, Co, and Si) into the framework using various concentrations, and manipulation of the reaction mixture dilution rate and resulting crystal morphology were examined in relation to the CO₂ adsorption performance. Among the various metal-substituted analogs, FeAPO-5 was found to exhibit the highest CO₂ capacity at all pressures tested (up to 4 bar). Among the Fe-substituted samples, xFeAPO-5, with x being the Fe/Al₂O₃ molar ratio in the synthesis mixture (range of 2.5:100–10:100), 5FeAPO-5 exhibited the highest capacity (1.8 mmol/g at 4 bar, 25°C) with an isosteric heat of adsorption of 23 kJ/mol for 0.08–0.36 mmol/g of CO₂ loading. This sample also contained the minimum portion of extra-framework or clustered iron and the highest mesoporosity. Low water content in the synthesis gel led to the formation of spherical agglomerates of small 2D-like crystallites that exhibited higher adsorption capacity compared to columnar-like crystals produced by employing more dilute mixtures. CO₂ adsorption kinetics was found to follow a pseudo–first-order model. The robust nature of AlPO₄-5–based adsorbents, their unique one-dimensional pore configuration, fast kinetics, and low heat of adsorption make them promising for pressure swing adsorption of CO₂ at industrial scale.
