Tri-tert-butyl(n-alkyl)phosphonium Ionic Liquids: Structure, Properties and Application as Hybrid Catalyst Nanomaterials

A series of sterically hindered tri-tert-butyl(n-alkyl)phosphonium salts (n-CnH2n+1 with n = 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15, 17) was synthesized and systematically studied by 1H, 13C, 31P NMR spectroscopy, ESI-MS, single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis and melting point measurement. Formation and stabilization palladium nanoparticles (PdNPs) were used to characterize the phosphonium ionic liquid (PIL) nanoscale interaction ability. The colloidal Pd in the PIL systems was described with TEM and DLS analyses and applied in the Suzuki cross-coupling reaction. The PILs were proven to be suitable stabilizers of PdNPs possessing high catalytic activity. The tri-tert-butyl(n-alkyl)phosphonium salts showed a complex nonlinear correlation of the structure–property relationship. The synthesized family of PILs has a broad variety of structural features, including hydrophobic and hydrophilic structures that are entirely expressed in the diversity of their properties

A magnetically retrievable mixed-valent Fe3O4@SiO2/Pd0/PdII nanocomposite exhibiting facile tandem Suzuki coupling/transfer hydrogenation reaction

Herein, we report a magnetically retrievable mixed-valent Fe3O4@SiO2/Pd0/PdIINP (5) nanocomposite system for tandem Suzuki coupling/transfer hydrogenation reaction. The nanocomposite 5 was prepared first by making a layer of [Formula: see text] on [Formula: see text] followed by deposition of [Formula: see text] and sorption of [Formula: see text] ions successively onto the surface of Fe3O4@SiO2NP. The nanocomposite was characterized by powder XRD, electron microscopy (SEM-EDS and TEM-EDS) and XPS spectroscopy techniques. The mixed-valent [Formula: see text] present onto the surface of nanocomposite 5 was confirmed by XPS technique. Interestingly, the mixed-valent nanocomposite Fe3O4@SiO2/Pd0/PdIINP (5) exhibited tandem Suzuki coupling/transfer hydrogenation reaction during the reaction of aryl bromide with aryl boronic acid (90% of C). The nanocomposite 5 displayed much better reactivity as compared to the monovalent Fe3O4@SiO2/Pd0NP (3) (25% of C) and Fe3O4@SiO2/PdIINP (4) (15% of C) nanocomposites. Further, because of the presence of magnetic [Formula: see text], the nanocomposite displayed its facile separation from the reaction mixture and reused at least for five catalytic cycles.

Sterically Hindered Phosphonium Salts: Structure, Properties and Palladium Nanoparticle Stabilization

A new family of sterically hindered alkyl(tri-tert-butyl) phosphonium salts (n-CnH2n+1 with n = 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20) was synthesized and evaluated as stabilizers for the formation of palladium nanoparticles (PdNPs), and the prepared PdNPs, stabilized by a series of phosphonium salts, were applied as catalysts of the Suzuki cross-coupling reaction. All investigated phosphonium salts were found to be excellent stabilizers of metal nanoparticles of small catalytically active size with a narrow size distribution. In addition, palladium nanoparticles exhibited exceptional stability: the presence of phosphonium salts prevented agglomeration and precipitation during the catalytic reaction.

Solvent effect in sonochemical synthesis of metal-alloy nanoparticles for use as electrocatalysts

Nanomaterials are now widely used in the fabrication of electrodes and electrocatalysts. Herein, we report a sonochemical study of the synthesis of molybdenum and palladium alloy nanomaterials supported on functionalized carbon material in various solvents: hexadecane, ethanol, ethylene glycol, polyethylene glycol (PEG 400) and Ionic liquids (ILs). The objective was to identify simple and more environmentally friendly design and fabrication methods for nanomaterial synthesis that are suitable as electrocatalysts in electrochemical applications. The particles size and distribution of nanomaterials were compared on two different carbons as supports: activated carbon and multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). The results show that carbon materials functionalized with ILs in ethanol/deionized water mixture solvent produced smaller particles sizes (3.00 ± 0.05 nm) with uniform distribution while in PEG 400, functionalized materials produced 4.00 ± 1 nm sized particles with uneven distribution (range). In hexadecane solvents with Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as capping ligands, large particle sizes (14.00 ± 1 nm) were produced with wide particle size distribution. The metal alloy nanoparticles produced in ILs without any external reducing agent have potential to exhibit a higher catalytic activity due to smaller particle size and uniform distribution.

Thermodynamic Insights into the Binding of Mono- and Dicationic Imidazolium Surfactant Ionic Liquids with Methylcellulose in the Diluted Regime

Alkylimidazolium salts are an important class of ionic liquids (ILs) due to their self-assembly capacity when in solution and due to their potential applications in chemistry and materials science. Therefore, detailed knowledge of the physicochemical properties of this class of ILs and their mixtures with natural polymers is highly desired. This work describes the interactions between a homologous series of mono- (C_nMIMBr) and dicationic imidazolium (C_n(MIM)₂Br₂) ILs with cellulose ethers in aqueous medium. The effects of the alkyl chain length (n = 10, 12, 14, and 16), type, and concentration range of ILs (below and above their cmc) on the binding to methylcellulose (MC) were evaluated. The thermodynamic parameters showed that the interactions are favored by the increase of the IL hydrocarbon chain length, and that the binding of monocationic ILs to MC is driven by entropy. The monocationic ILs bind more effectively on the methoxyl group of MC when compared to dicationic ILs, and this outcome may be rationalized by considering the structural difference between the conventional (C_nMIMBr) and the bolaform (C_n(MIM)₂Br₂) surfactant ILs. The C₁₆MIMBr interacts more strongly with hydroxypropylcellulose when compared to methylcellulose, indicating that the strength of the interaction also depends on the hydrophobicity of the cellulose ethers. Our findings highlight that several parameters should be taken into account when designing new complex formulations.

Ionic liquid and nanoparticle hybrid systems: Emerging applications

Having novel electronic and optical properties that emanate from their nano-scale dimensions, nanoparticles are central to numerous applications. Ionic liquids can confer to nanoparticle chemical protection and physicochemical property enhancement through intermolecular interactions and can consequently improve the stability and reusability of nanoparticle for various operations. With an aim to combine the novel properties of nanoparticles and ionic liquids, different structures have been generated, based on a balance of several intermolecular interactions. Such ionic liquid and nanoparticle hybrids are showing great potential in diverse applications. In this review, we first introduce various types of ionic liquid and nanoparticle hybrids, including nanoparticle colloidal dispersions in ionic liquids, ionic liquid-grafted nanoparticles, and nanoparticle-stabilized ionic liquid-based emulsions. Such hybrid materials exhibit interesting synergisms. We then highlight representative applications of ionic liquid and nanoparticle hybrids in the catalysis, electrochemistry and separations fields. Such hybrids can attain better stability and higher efficiency under a broad range of conditions. Novel and enhanced performance can be achieved in these applications by combining desired properties of ionic liquids and of nanoparticles within an appropriate hybrid nanostructure.

Zwitterionic liquid (ZIL) coated CuO as an efficient catalyst for the green synthesis of bis-coumarin derivatives via one-pot multi-component reactions using mechanochemistry

ZIL@CuO1–3 were developed as a catalyst for the synthesis of bis-coumarins under environmentally benign conditions. Mechanochemistry induced synthesis of bis-coumarin derivatives with more than 90% yield was accomplished.

Ag–Pd and CuO–Pd nanoparticles in a hydroxyl-group functionalized ionic liquid: synthesis, characterization and catalytic performance

Heteronuclear Ag–Pd and CuO–Pd nanoparticles with a controllable Ag : Pd or Cu : Pd ratio were easily synthesized through thermal decomposition of their acetate salts in a functionalized ionic liquid, [C₂OHmim][NTf₂].
