Soil Phosphorus Pools, Bioavailability and Environmental Risk in Response to the Phosphorus Supply in the Red Soil of Southern China

Soil phosphorus fractionations as affected by cropping systems in the central mid-hills region of Nepal

Soil plays a critical role as the primary reservoir of phosphorus (P) in terrestrial ecosystems. Sequential fractionation has been extensively utilized to gain insights into the characteristics and dynamics of soil P. However, there is a knowledge gap regarding the different P pools in Nepalese soils. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the impact of cropping systems on soil P fractions in the central mid-hills of Nepal. The study focused on four cropping systems: vegetable, fruit, rice, and maize-based systems, which exhibited variations in nutrient management, topography, and cropping intensity. A total of 240 soil samples (60 samples from each cropping system) were collected from multiple sites within the central mid-hill region. Standard analytical methods were used to determine the general parameters of the soils, while the sequential fractionation method was employed to assess the organic and inorganic P pools. The results indicated that the effect of cropping systems on soil pH, calcium carbonate (CaCO3) content, and the proportion of sand, silt, and clay was not statistically significant in terms of general parameters. However, significant differences were observed among the different cropping systems in organic matter (OM), electrical conductivity (EC), cation exchange capacity (CEC), and available phosphorus. Similarly, in terms of inorganic phosphorus fractions, loosely bound P (LB-P), aluminum bound P (Al-P), iron bound P (Fe-P), and reductant soluble P (RS-P) were significantly affected, while calcium bound P (Ca-P) did not show a significant difference. Furthermore, in terms of organic phosphorus fractions, labile organic P (L-Po), fluvic acid organic P (FA-Po), and non-labile organic P (NL-Po) exhibited significant differences, whereas moderately labile organic P (ML-Po) and humic acid organic P (HA-Po) did not show a significant difference. Additionally, reductant soluble P showed a significant difference, while total P did not differ significantly. The vegetable-based system exhibited higher levels of the majority of P fractions, followed by the fruit-based, maize-based, and rice-based systems. These findings emphasize the importance of considering cropping systems and their response to different phosphorus pools, as this knowledge can contribute to the development of improved soil phosphorus management strategies and promote sustainable agricultural practices in the region.

Effects of two substrates at different phosphorus levels on morphology and physiology of Dianthus barbatus Linn

Dianthus barbatus linn. is widely used in gardens, mainly as flower beds and flower borders. The effects of different gradients of P on the growth and root morphology of Dianthus barbatus were studied to explore its morphological and physiological responses and adaptive strategies. Hence, this study provides a theoretical basis and practical guidance for D. barbatus production. Two soil substrates, namely loess and vegetable soil, and five phosphorus concentration gradients were set; no phosphorus application was used as the control. The morphology and physiology of D. barbatus were also investigated. Low-to-medium- and low-phosphorus treatments promoted the growth of D. barbatus in the above and underground parts of the plants grown on both substrates. Chlorophyll content, flower quantity, and acid phosphatase activity in the rhizosphere soil were significantly increased in the H1 and H2 treatments of loess and in the C4 treatment of vegetable soil. Thus, D. barbatus seems to reduce the damage caused by phosphorus stress by increasing chlorophyll content and root acid phosphatase activity. The latter was significantly higher in vegetable soil than in loess. Vegetable soil was more conducive to D. barbatus growth than loess.

Fertilization as the most critical factor affecting yield response and agronomic efficiency of phosphorus in Chinese rice production: evidence from multi-location field trials

BACKGROUND

Efficient utilization of phosphorus (P) has been a major challenge for sustainable agriculture. However, the responses of fertilizer rate, region, soil properties, cropping systems and genotypes to P have not been investigated comprehensively and systematically.

RESULTS

A comprehensive analysis of 9863 fertilizer-P experiments on rice cultivation in China showed that rice yield  increased first and then fell down with the addition of P fertilizer, and the highest yield of 7963 kg ha-1 was observed under 100% P treatment. Under 100% P treatment, the yield response of applied P (YRP ) and agronomic efficiency of applied P (AEP ) were 12.8% and 30.1 kg ha-1 , respectively. Lower soil pH (< 5.5) and organic matter (< 30.0 g kg-1 ) were associated with lower YRP and AEP . By contrast, soil available P < 25.0 mg kg-1 resulted in decreased YRP (15.3 to 11.4%) and AEP (32.3 kg kg-1 to 26.2 kg kg-1 ), whereas soil available P > 25.0 mg kg-1 maintained the relatively stable YRP and AEP . Also, the YRP and AEP were significantly higher for single-cropping rice compared to other cropping systems. Moreover, the rice genotypes such as 'Longdun', 'Kendao' and 'Jigeng' had higher YRP and AEP than the average value. Overall, the fertilizer-P rate was the primary factor affecting YRP and AEP , and the recommended P fertilizer rate can be reduced by 9-21 kg P ha-1 compared to existing expert recommendations.

CONCLUSION

The present study highlights the role of fertilizer-P rate in maximizing the YRP and AEP , thereby providing a strong basis for future fertilizer management in rice cultivation systems. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

Root-knot nematode infections and soil characteristics significantly affected microbial community composition and assembly of tobacco soil microbiota: a large-scale comparison in tobacco-growing areas

Introduction

Tobacco root-knot nematode (RKN) is a highly destructive soil-borne disease worldwide. However, there is a lack of research on the relationship between RKN and tobacco root microbial community composition under large-scale geographical conditions in China.

Methods

In this study, we collected 65 samples from 28 main tobacco-growing areas across 10 provinces in China and conducted 16S rDNA sequencing to investigate the dynamic microbial changes in tobacco soil infected by RKN compared to healthy tobacco soil. Based on the analysis of rhizosphere soil bacterial communities, changes after RKN infection, and soil environmental factors.

Results

We found the 28 tobacco-growing areas could be divided into two distinct groups with different microbial compositions and varying responses to RKN infection. In group1 of the provinces of Anhui, Henan, Shanxi, and Heilongjiang, Vicinamibacteria dominated the bacterial community, while Acidobacteriae was present in low abundance. In contrast, group2 of the other six provinces (Yunnan, Guizhou, Chongqing, Guangxi, Hubei, and Shandong) exhibited an opposite pattern. After infected by RKN, the genera Chitinophaga increased significant in group 1, while the genera Rhodococcus in group 2 exhibited a substantial increase. Alpha-diversity analysis revealed that RKN-infected tobacco exhibited a richer and more diverse rhizosphere soil bacterial community compared to healthy tobacco in most growing areas. A total of 12 kinds of soil environmental factors were measured in healthy and RKN-infected tobacco soil, and based on the co-occurrence and correlation analysis between environmental factors and microbial species, the pH level, calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), phosphorus (P), iron (Fe), and sodium (Na) were identified as key environmental factors influencing the population composition of rhizosphere microorganisms during RKN infection. We observed that RKN infection further increased the pH in weakly alkaline group 1 soil, while weakly acidic group 2 soil experienced a further decrease in pH. Furthermore, we identified three genera as potential biocontrol or plant growth-promoting bacteria for tobacco.

Discussion

These findings provide valuable reference data for managing RKN disease in different tobacco-growing areas and contribute to the exploration of new and effective biological control methods.

No-till improves selected soil properties, phosphorous availability and utilization efficiency, and soybean yield on some smallholder farms in South Africa

Some of the limiting factors for smallholder farmer soybean production in South Africa are low native soil phosphorus (P) availability and poor utilization efficiency of added P. Phosphorus fertilization, use of improved or high yield potential cultivars and appropriate cropping systems could increase soybean yields. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of tillage, cultivar and P fertilization levels on P uptake and P use efficiency, as well as plant growth, yield, grain protein and oil content, in a soybean based cropping system. The study was conducted under dryland conditions at Sheepmoor, Mpumalanga. A field experiment was established in a randomized complete block design. Treatments were arranged in a 2 × 3 × 3 strip-split-plot structure. There were two tillage systems [no-till (NT) and conventional tillage (CT)], three cultivars (PAN 1614R, PAN 1521R, and PAN 1532R), and three phosphorus rates (0, 30, and 60 kg/ha). All treatment combinations were replicated three times. P uptake improved with P application, although there were no differences between 30 and 60 kg/ha whilst PFP was significantly higher at 30 kg/ha P. Yield was significantly higher at 30 kg/ha P application under NT and varied with cultivars. P application at 30 and 60 kg/ha significantly reduced oil content by 11.3 and 7.16%, respectively, but had inverse effects on protein content. The activities of acid phosphatase (ACP) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) also increased with P application. Improvement of soybean yield and its attributes, grain quality, P uptake, PFP, soil physicochemical and microbial properties emphasize the importance of fertilizer application, sustainable cropping systems coupled with careful cultivar selection. Therefore, in order to improve soil fertility and soybean yield under small farm conditions, the application of no-till and optimum application of fertilizers should be prioritized.

Changes in phosphorus mobilization and community assembly of bacterial and fungal communities in rice rhizosphere under phosphate deficiency

Rhizosphere microorganisms are closely associated with phosphorus (P) uptake in plants and are considered potential agents to mitigate P shortage. However, the mechanisms of rhizospheric microbial community assembly under P deficiency have yet to be elucidated. In this study, bacterial and fungal communities in rice rhizosphere and their P mobilization potential under high (+P) and low (−P) concentrations of P were investigated. Bacterial and fungal community structures were significantly different between −P and +P treatments. And both bacterial and fungal P-mobilizing taxa were enriched in-P treatment; however, the proportion of P-mobilizing agents in the fungal community was markedly greater than that in the bacterial community. A culture experiment confirmed that microbial phosphate solubilizing capacity was significantly higher in −P treatment compared with that in +P treatment. −P treatment lowered bacterial diversity in rice rhizosphere but increased fungal diversity. Further analysis demonstrated that the contribution of deterministic processes in governing bacterial community assembly was strengthened under P deficiency but was largely weakened in shaping the fungal community. These results highlighted that enriching P-mobilizing microbes in the rhizosphere is a vital way for rice to cope with P deficiency, and that fungi contribute considerably to P mobilization in rice rhizosphere. Findings from the study provide novel insights into the assembly of the rhizosphere microbiome under P deficiency and this will facilitate the development of rhizosphere microbial regulation strategies to increase nutrient uptake in plants.

Soil pH: a key edaphic factor regulating distribution and functions of bacterial community along vertical soil profiles in red soil of pomelo orchard

Background

Soil microbes exist throughout the soil profile and those inhabiting topsoil (0–20 cm) are believed to play a key role in nutrients cycling. However, the majority of the soil microbiology studies have exclusively focused on the distribution of soil microbial communities in the topsoil, and it remains poorly understood through the subsurface soil profile (i.e., 20–40 and 40–60 cm). Here, we examined how the bacterial community composition and functional diversity changes under intensive fertilization across vertical soil profiles [(0–20 cm (RS1), 20–40 cm (RS2), and 40–60 cm (RS3)] in the red soil of pomelo orchard, Pinghe County, Fujian, China.

Results

Bacterial community composition was determined by 16S rRNA gene sequencing and interlinked with edaphic factors, including soil pH, available phosphorous (AP), available nitrogen (AN), and available potassium (AK) to investigate the key edaphic factors that shape the soil bacterial community along with different soil profiles. The most dominant bacterial taxa were Proteobacteria, Acidobacteria, Actinobacteria, Chloroflexi, Crenarchaeota, and Bacteriodetes. Bacterial richness and diversity was highest in RS1 and declined with increasing soil depth. The distinct distribution patterns of the bacterial community were found across the different soil profiles. Besides, soil pH exhibited a strong influence (pH ˃AP ˃AN) on the bacterial communities under all soil depths. The relative abundance of Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, Crenarchaeota, and Firmicutes was negatively correlated with soil pH, while Acidobacteria, Chloroflexi, Bacteriodetes, Planctomycetes, and Gemmatimonadetes were positively correlated with soil pH. Co-occurrence network analysis revealed that network topological features were weakened with increasing soil depth, indicating a more stable bacterial community in the RS1. Bacterial functions were estimated using FAPROTAX and the relative abundance of functional bacterial community related to metabolic processes, including C-cycle, N-cycle, and energy production was significantly higher in RS1 compared to RS2 and RS3, and soil pH had a significant effect on these functional microbes.

Conclusions

This study provided the valuable findings regarding the structure and functions of bacterial communities in red soil of pomelo orchards, and highlighted the importance of soil depth and pH in shaping the soil bacterial population, their spatial distribution and ecological functioning. These results suggest the alleviation of soil acidification by adopting integrated management practices to preserve the soil microbial communities for better ecological functioning.

Distribution and Potential Availability of As, Metals and P in Sediments from a Riverine Reservoir in a Rural Mountainous Catchment (NE Portugal)

A geochemical investigation was carried out on the bottom sediments of a riverine reservoir, located in a mountainous rural region (NE Portugal), with the aim of evaluating the contents of As, metals and P and their potential availability. The elements contents were detected in the following ranges (µg g⁻¹): As (18–64); Cr (32–128); Cu (39–93); Ni (18–80); Pb (49–160); Zn (207–334); P (1705–2681). The reducible fraction is the most significant in the retention of the elements. Based on their potential relative mobility, the detected metals could be classed as follows: Zn > As, Pb > Cu > Cr, Ni. The results on geochemical partitioning were revealed to be important when the Sediment Quality Guidelines (SQGs) were considered. Arsenic, Cr, Ni, Pb and Zn showed total contents exceeding the values of Probable Effect Level (PEL), but only As occurred in the most potentially available form; Cr and Ni can be considered relatively unavailable, since these are mainly associated with the residual phase. Locally, oxygen depletion could release P into the water column due to the higher concentrations in Fe-P and CDB-P fractions. The potential availability of As, metals and P in sediments indicates that the quality of sediments accumulated in small reservoirs should be considered in management policies.
